‘Pakistan cannot dictate to us’: Afghan Taliban spokesperson

The spokesperson for the Tehreek-e-Taliban Afghanistan Suhail Shaheen, while talking on Geo News’ programme ‘Jirga’ said that Pakistan “cannot dictate to us or impose its views on us”.

Shaheen gave these remarks to senior journalist Saleem Safi. He further added that Pakistan is welcome to help the Taliban arrive at a settlement in Afghanistan.

In the context of reports that the Afghan Taliban are not willing to listen to Pakistan, the spokesperson said: “We want brotherly relations. They are neighbours, a Muslim country, and we have shared values — historical, religious and cultural.”

“They can help us in the peace process but can’t dictate to us or impose their views. And this is against international principles,” he added.

Speaking of the Taliban’s demand for an Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, Shaheen said that having an emirate is “a legitimate right of the people of Afghanistan”.

“We say nothing about other governments. They should not impose their view,” he said, reiterating, “This is not in accordance with international principles either.”

On whether the Taliban accept the outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) or consider them opponents after the TTP emir swore loyalty to Afghan Taliban chief Mullah Haibatullah Akhunzada, Shaheen said: “I do not know of the TTP emir swearing allegiance [to our leader] but I will tell you the policy of the Islamic Emirate.”

“We will not allow the use of Afghan soil, neither by an individual nor by any group. I have said this in many interviews and I think our position is clear and known to all.”

  • Feroze, Adnan and Yasir support Mashal Khan’s stance on law enforcement

Feroze, Adnan and Yasir support Mashal Khan’s stance on law enforcement

Mashal Khan recently reacted to the news of two dogs being sentenced to death in Karachi on her Instagram handle. Actor and writer Yasir Hussain was quick to endorse Mashal’s stance by resharing her post with the caption, “@mashalkh bilkul sahi kaha apne”. This re-shared post was further encouraged by the Khaani actor, Feroze Khan.

Ahista Ahista actor Adnan Siddiqui on Sunday also spoke against the decision to euthanise two German Shepherds in an Instagram post.

“I am deliberately not sharing the picture of the dogs who are to be euthanised to not hurt the sentiments of the family and animal lovers.” His statement read: “A very inhuman thing to euthanize dogs for mauling. The damage of the attack is three pronged; on the gentleman who was injured, the family that lost their pets and the dogs that were put to sleep.”

The two German Shepherds that attacked a lawyer in Karachi last month will be “euthanized”, according to a compromise agreement between the dogs’ owner and the victim.

Activists have termed the agreement between Humayun Khan and Advocate Mirza Akhtar Ali as preposterous.

  • Italy crowned European champions once again after defeating England

Italy crowned European champions once again after defeating England

Italy is champions of Europe again, for the first time since 1968, breaking English hearts in the process at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.

The 120 minutes had been nerve-shredding with England enjoying early elation when Luke Shaw scored his first-ever international goal, a magnificent half-volley with the game’s first move. And then came what felt like the slow and inexorable trudge towards defeat.

Gareth Southgate’s team had been comfortable in the first half but the final slid away from them thereafter; Italy turning up the temperature, pinning England back.

Italy got the equaliser that they deserved through Leonardo Bonucci and, during extra time, the specter of penalties hung heavy. When they came, England lost their nerve – missing three of their kicks.

It was a night when sporting immortality had beckoned for England, a first trophy since the World Cup of 1966. In the end, it would be a depressingly familiar hard-luck story.

For Italy, it was a second European Championship and glory for Roberto Mancini, whose work since taking over as the manager from Gian Piero Ventura after the failure to qualify for the 2018 World Cup has been a little short of sensational.

Italy had the know-how; they have almost forgotten what defeat is. They are unbeaten in 34 matches, a run that spans nearly three years.

  • Billionaire Richard Branson achieves his space dream

British Billionaire, Richard Branson, flew into space on Sunday on his Virgin Galactic rocket plane and safely returned in the vehicle’s first fully-crewed test flight to space.

After the historic moment, he released a video of him and the crew during the flight on Twitter.

“I was once a child with a dream looking up to the stars. Now I’m an adult in a spaceship looking down to our beautiful Earth,” said Branson.

According to reports, the space plane took off from Spaceport America, a huge base built in the Jornada del Muerto desert. It reached a peak altitude of around 53 miles beyond the boundary of space and carried two pilots and four passengers, including Branson.

Shortly after the flight, the 70-year-old billionaire hugged his loved ones. He added, “Welcome to the dawn of a new space age.”

The mission’s success has made Branson the first tycoon — beating Bezos — to cross the final frontier in a ship built by his own company. However, the richest person in the world is due to fly on July 20 and he himself congratulated his friendly rival on Instagram.

Branson founded Virgin Galactic in 2004, but his dream almost came to an end in 2014 when an accident caused the death of a pilot, considerably delaying the program. The company has planned two further flights, and then the start of regular commercial operations from early 2022.

Good Morning, *|MERGE1|*. It’s July 11, Sunday.I was reading the news about the two dogs who attacked a lawyer in Karachi. The dogs will be “euthanised”, according to a compromise agreement between the dogs’ owner and the victim. I am unable to understand the logical reasoning behind this agreement — how can innocent animals be punished for the negligence of their owner?

A harrowing video recently went viral on social media in which a man, Usman Mirza, was seen harassing and assaulting a young couple. He had a few male accomplices with him, and he was also armed. Mirza beat up the couple, stripped them, and subjected them to sexual assault. Pakistani women on social media came out in support of the young couple and also voiced how unsafe and insecure they feel in a society full of misogyny and violence.

Following an uproar on social media, the police arrested Usman Mirza and his accomplices. The police also reached out to the couple to record their statement.

According to media reports, the couple recorded their statements separately under Section 161 of the Criminal Code. The incident took place last year in November and the couple was blackmailed by the culprit; they ended up paying more than a million rupees to Mirza. This was clearly not an isolated incident as more videos have been found from the mobile phones of the arrested men. It shows that this gang of criminals has been indulging in such nefarious activities for quite some time now.

Actress Fatima Effendi mentioned in an interview in 2015 that she rejected a film’s offer by Bollywood director Anees Bazmee who has blockbuster movies like Singh Is Kinng and Welcome in his filmography.

The acclaimed director was then casting for his film Welcome Back which featured John Abraham, Shruti Hassan, Anil Kapoor, Dimple Kapadia, Nana Patekar amongst others.
