  • Rise in mobile phones import by 63%: PTA

The country has witnessed a 63% increase in the import of mobile devices via legal channels for the year 2018-19, according to Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).

Since the implementation of the Device Identification Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS), around 17.2 million devices were imported in 2018 while 28.02 million were imported in 2019.

This year Pakistan has imported around 32.83 million devices so far, as per PTA’s press release.

PTA implemented DIRBS System in December 2018, with the aim to curtail counterfeit mobile phone usage, discourage mobile phone theft and protect consumer interest. Through DIRBS, PTA has identified and blocked 24.3 Million fake replica mobile devices and 657,645 IMEIs that were duplicated.

The implementation of DIRBS has also been the catalyst for local mobile devices manufacturing, leading to the establishment of 29 local assembly facilities. Since 2019, over 20 million devices have produced in these facilities.

Moreover, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has collected a total of Rs90 billion in customs duties on formal imports during January 2010-November 2020. This is Rs68 billion more custom duties as compared to custom duties collected in 2018. i.e. Rs22 billion.

DIRBS has enabled FBR to collect Rs9bn revenue under the individual category from January 2019 to Dec 3, 2020. The PTA said it was an untapped area and no revenue was being collected in this category before the implementation of DIRBS.

  • Dawn sacks Lahore resident editor as layoffs continue

Dawn sacks Lahore resident editor as layoffs continue

Amid staffers’ protests against its policy of retrenchment and pay cuts, Dawn on Thursday sacked Asha’ar Rehman, the newspaper’s Lahore resident editor.

His sacking was the first from the editorial department in Lahore, after the managers laid off 24 employees in November, including cleaners and security guards, reported JournalismPakistan.com.

It said the staff felt uneasy following the editor’s termination and sensed more layoffs in the days ahead.

Rehman had joined Dawn in February 2007 from The News on Sunday, where he worked as an editor. He was on the launch team of The News. Earlier on in his career, he had stints with the Kuwait Times and the Frontier Post.

Dawn also laid off several employees at other centers earlier, prompting protests by the workers’ union and the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ). The paper has also slapped pay cuts.

The Dawn union held the protest in Karachi on Tuesday. The journalists warned the newspaper management against any further layoffs and cuts in salaries and benefits. They also asked the government to protect journalists’ economic rights.

Earlier, the employees held a similar protest outside the Dawn Islamabad office.

  • Men with COVID-19 three times more likely to need intensive care than women: study

Men with COVID-19 three times more likely to need intensive care than women: study

Men infected with COVID-19 are three times more likely to require intensive care than women and are at significantly higher risk of dying from the virus, scientists said Wednesday.

Researchers analysed over three million confirmed coronavirus cases from 46 countries and 44 states in the US between January 1 and June 1, 2020.

They found that the risk of Sars-Cov-2 infection was the same for women and men, as “exactly half” of the confirmed cases were male patients.

But men are almost three times more likely than women to be hospitalised in an intensive care unit and are 39 percent more likely to die from the virus, the study said.

“These data may help doctors to recognise that sex is a risk factor for severe disease when managing patients,” co-author Kate Webb told AFP.

“Sex is an under reported variable in many studies and this is a reminder that it is an important factor to consider in research,” the Cape Town University researcher said.

The trend is global – aside from a few exceptions – and can mostly be put down to biological differences, researchers said.

“Sex differences in both the innate and adaptive immune system have been previously reported and may account for the female advantage in Covid-19,” the authors said.

Women naturally produce more type I interferon proteins that limit the abnormal immune response known as a cytokine storm, believed to play a role in provoking severe forms of Covid-19.

The “female” oestradiol hormone may also help women to fend off grave forms of the virus, as it boosts the response of T cells – which kill infected cells – and increases the production of antibodies, the study said.

“In contrast, the male sex hormone testosterone suppresses the immune system,” the authors noted.

Sex-based differences in co-morbidities associated with severe Covid-19 may put men at outsize risk, they wrote in the study, published in Nature Communications.

But data to account for the role of other medical conditions is lacking, they added.

In addition, the authors noted the similarity in the proportions of women and men with hypertension and diabetes globally, “the most common reported comorbidities in hospitalised Covid-19 patients.”

The findings may have implications for future vaccines, the authors said.

Webb noted previous vaccines to other infections have shown differences in response between women and men.

“It is still to be determined whether the same will be true for Sars-CoV-2 vaccines,” Webb said.

“But we hope that our paper highlights the need to include sex as a variable when considering vaccine research.”

Mukesh Ambani becomes grandfather as Akash and Shloka welcome baby boy

Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani on Thursday became a grandfather after his son Akash and his wife Shloka Mehta welcomed a baby boy.

“Nita and Mukesh Ambani are delighted to have become grandparents for the first time, as they welcome the great-grandson of Dhirubhai and Kokilaben Ambani. Shloka and Akash Ambani became proud parents of a baby boy today (December 10) in Mumbai,” read an official statement from the Ambani family.

“Both mother and son are doing well. The new arrival has brought immense joy to the Mehta and Ambani families,” it added.

Akash Ambani and Shloka Mehta got married on March 9, 2019, in a grand ceremony in Mumbai. Shloka is the daughter of diamantaire Russell Mehta and Mona Mehta. The couple’s wedding was a glitzy affair attended by many A-listers from politics to showbiz and business including Shah Rukh Khan, his wife Gauri and former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair and wife Cherie.

The Ambanis had come under fire last year when they released a video for Shloka’s first birthday after the wedding in which they ‘subtly’ demanded a kid from their new bride.

“Dearest Shloka, wish you a very happy birthday and your first birthday as Mrs Shloka Ambani,” Mukesh had said in the video. “May this year bring you lots of happiness, love, peace, and prosperity. And I’m sure that by the time I wish you, next year not only will I be a grandfather but you will be a mother. This is going to be an eventful year. All the best beta.”

Student names Emraan Hashmi, Sunny Leone as parents in admit card

A 20-year-old student in Bihar, India has named Bollywood actors Emraan Hashmi and Sunny Leone as his father and mother respectively.

The examinee, Kundan Kumar, not only filled the parents column with the Indian film stars, the address he mentioned was even more absurd.

He noted Chaturbhuj Sthan, the town’s infamous red-light area as his address.

“We have ordered an inquiry. It is obviously mischief and the student might himself be responsible for the same. Based on the report of the inquiry, further action will be taken,” the university’s registrar Ram Krishna Thakur said.

The student is being tracked down based on the Aadhaar Card number and mobile number mentioned on the admit card.

ECP finds ‘serious discrepancies’ in Hammad Azhar’s assets: report

The Election Commission of Pakistan is likely to take action against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and federal minister Hammad Azhar over “some serious discrepancies observed during scrutiny of [his declared] assets”.

The News reported that the minister did not declare his “shares in a flour mill and few other businesses in one of his declarations submitted to the ECP”.

“After he became MNA in 2018 and later became a member of the cabinet, the assets declared by him and his spouse were different from those he had declared earlier” while filing his nomination paper, the report said, adding that this prompted ECP to launch the scrutiny some two years back.

“Our [ECP’s] team found an apparent mis-declaration, serious discrepancies and deficiencies in Hammad’s declarations, and he failed to explain his position before the electoral body scrutinising his and his wife’s assets and liabilities,” the report quoted an ECP official.

Meanwhile, Hammad Azhar has refuted the content of the report and said that it “is compiled without reading my reply to ECP which easily answered all queries in May 2019”.

He said the reporter ignored his written filed in the election commission in response to the scrutiny.

About his response in 2019, the ECP official quoted by The News said that it was “unsatisfactory”.

‘Ertuğrul’ star Engin Altan Düzyatan arrives in Pakistan for a short visit

Engin Altan Düzyatan, who is popularly referred to as Ertuğrul after the role he plays in the hit Turkish series Diriliş: Ertuğrul arrived in Lahore on Thursday for a short visit.

According to details, the actor is in Pakistan “at the invitation of a private business company”.

    https://twitter.com/PakTurkey/status/1336889821713870848?s=20

Turkey’s Anadolu Agency reported that Engin will sign an agreement with Lahore-based Chaudhary group of industries as a brand ambassador.

However, due to a surge in coronavirus cases in the country, he may not be able to meet his fans.

Often described as the Turkish Game of Thrones, Diriliş: Ertuğrul is being aired on the recommendation of Prime Minister Imran Khan. Set in 13th century Anatolia and based on the struggle of Ertuğrul Gazi, father of Osman I – the founder of the Ottoman dynasty, Diriliş: Ertuğrul has been trending in the country ever since its first episode aired on the first of Ramzan.

  • FBR sees rise in income tax collection

FBR sees rise in income tax collection

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has received a record number of returns this year, along with the highest ever amount of income tax at the time of filing.

According to a statement issued by the FBR on Wednesday, “A total of nearly 1.8 million returns have been filed together with an amount of about Rs22 billion. Last year, around this time, 1.73 million returns were filed while about Rs13.5 billion were deposited as income tax.”

FBR said it had opted not to extend the last date to file income tax returns beyond December 8, 2020 to restore the credibility and predictability of the final date and promote tax discipline, which worked. However, to ensure that no hardship was faced by taxpayers, a number of special measures were adopted.

These included liberal acceptance of requests for extension in filing date as available under the law; provision to file requests manually besides the online facility; enabling tax practitioners/advisors to file a single request for multiple clients; and enabling the chief commissioners to set up special desks for collection of manual request and sorting their jurisdiction at their level.

The above measures have encouraged a large number of taxpayers to file extension requests, the statement read. It is estimated that at least 300,000 taxpayers have made use of this facility, thus taking the number of potential returns to 2.1 million, which is 21pc higher compared to last year until this date.

It is further clarified that the process of filing is continuing unabated. A comparison with the returns of last year at the close of the deadline, which was 30 June 2020, would be meaningful when the number of additional returns to be filed until 30 June 2021 is available.

The FBR commended the determination of taxpayers, and the support it received from members of tax bars from all over the country, who have made such record setting returns and income tax payments possible. The results establish that the decision not to allow general extension in the last date, would go a long way toward re-establishing much needed trust and credibility of the tax system.
