    WhatsApp reaches 2 billion users

Facebook-owned instant messenger — WhatsApp — has crossed 2 billion users around the world, and on this success, has reaffirmed its commitment to strong encryption to protect the privacy of users’ data.

WhatsApp, which was acquired by Facebook in 2014, turned into the most widely-used free messaging app that provides free text, voice and video communication services; enabling more than 2 billion people to have conversations from anywhere in the world.

“Strong encryption is a necessity in modern life. We will not compromise on security because that would make people less safe,” WhatsApp said in an official statement. “For even more protection, we work with top security experts and employ industry-leading technology to stop misuse as well as provide controls and ways to report issues without sacrificing privacy.”

The social network is working to extend end-to-end encryption across its messaging applications, including Facebook Messenger and Instagram.

In a recent statement, Facebook had said some 2.89 billion people globally were daily users of at least one of its services. The growth has attracted more attention of regulators and activists concerned over the dominance of major tech platforms.

  • ‘Neutral’ Switzerland helped CIA spy on Pakistan, others?

‘Neutral’ Switzerland helped CIA spy on Pakistan, others?

Outraged commentators warned on Wednesday that the CIA and Germany’s intelligence service had for decades used a Swiss encryption company for spying, seriously damaging Switzerland’s cherished reputation for neutrality, AFP reported.

Critics voiced particular concern that Bern may have been at least tacitly complicit in the secret operation. Switzerland, which takes pride in its neutral and non-aligned status, “was hosting a quasi ally intelligence agency,” the Tribune de Geneve daily said in an editorial.

Swiss officials “very likely” knew what was going on but “closed their eyes” in the name of neutrality, it added. Home to the United Nations European headquarters and the International Committee of the Red Cross, Switzerland is recognised worldwide for its standing as an honest broker.

But media revelations on Tuesday told how for decades the US and West German intelligence services raked in the top-secret communications of governments around the world. The Trojan horse they used was their hidden control of Swiss encryption company Crypto AG.

The company supplied devices for encoded communications to some 120 countries from after World War II to the beginning of this century, including Iran, South American governments, and India and Pakistan.

Unknown to those governments, Crypto was secretly acquired in 1970 by the US Central Intelligence Agency together with the then West Germany’s BND Federal Intelligence Service.

Together they rigged Crypto’s equipment to be able to easily break the codes and read the government’s messages, according to reports by the Washington Post, German television ZTE and Swiss state media SRF.

Citing a classified internal CIA history of what was originally called operation “Thesaurus” and later “Rubicon,” the reports said that in the 1980s the harvest from the Crypto machines supplied roughly 40 percent of all the foreign communications US code-breakers processed for intelligence.

The spy agencies were thus able to gather precious information during major crises such as the hostage crisis at the US embassy in Tehran in 1979 the 1982 Falklands War between Argentina and Britain. They also got information on several political assassinations in Latin America.

The Swiss government said on Tuesday it had named a retired federal judge to look into the matter, with his findings due out in June. But Carolina Bohren, a Swiss defence ministry spokeswoman, stressed the difficulties ahead. “The events in question began in 1945 and are difficult to reconstruct and interpret today,” she said.

Bern also announced it had suspended export licenses for Crypto’s successor companies, until the situation has been “clarified”. But a number of political parties, insisting that far more needed to be done, on Wednesday called for a full-blown investigation.

The Swiss Socialist Party wondered in a tweet whether the country’s own intelligence service was a “victim or an accomplice”, demanding “clarifications and a full investigation”. The Greens and Christian Democrats also suggested a parliamentary commission might be called for.

Amnesty International’s Swiss chapter meanwhile raised questions about the Swiss authorities’ responsibility both for the espionage and for how the information gathered had been used.

“Were our intelligence services and the government aware of the torture and the murders committed by military dictatorships in Chile and Argentina?” it asked in a tweet. “Did they take any measures? A full investigation must be carried out.”

Switzerland has a centuries-old tradition of neutrality. It avoided being drawn into either of the World Wars and has stayed outside political and military alliances such as NATO.

Several media reports noted on Wednesday that this reputation ended up providing excellent cover for the United States and Germany when they set up their spying operation there.

Whether this was done “out of incompetence, because of a desire to cover for foreign secret service agents, or to profit from the information they uncovered, must now be clarified,” the Tages-Anzeiger daily insisted. “That is the only way to get out of this mess.”

  • Freelancers payment limit raised to Rs. $25,000: State Bank of Pakistan

Freelancers, who provide services in information and communication technology, can now receive payments worth up to $25,000 (Rs 3.9 million) per month, which, earlier, stood at a mere $5,000 (Rs 0.7 million).

The decision has been made by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) to broaden the scope of remittances in Pakistan. This will facilitate freelancers to bring a greater value of funds through more economical and efficient channels of home remittances and help in receiving foreign exchange flow through formal banking.

According to SBP, “this would enable freelancers to expand their services and engage new individuals to join the workforce that will inevitably create more employment opportunities in Pakistan”.

The concept of freelancing is the emerging trend in Pakistan. Freelancing is a term used commonly for people who are self-employed. Mostly, they are not committed to a particular employer for the long term. They provide services in the local and international market.

Man threatens to set himself on fire after coronavirus cancels 60th birthday

A man in southwest China doused himself with petrol and tied firecrackers around his waist because authorities cancelled his birthday banquet as a precaution against spreading the coronavirus.

The Chongqing resident, a 59-year-old surnamed Wang, had planned to hold a banquet with 10 tables late last month, state news agency Xinhua reported Wednesday.

But with authorities across China restricting public gatherings to contain the outbreak, officials told Wang to cancel the party.

Hundreds of millions of people across China face restrictions and interruptions to their lives due to efforts to contain the coronavirus outbreak, which has now infected more than 44,600 people and killed over 1,100.

Beijing’s municipal authorities announced last week that parties and group dinners at restaurants would be temporarily forbidden in the Chinese capital to prevent the spread of the virus.

After his party was cancelled, the Chongqing man showed up at a village committee office armed with firecrackers, which he tied around his waist. He also poured gasoline on his chest and held out a lighter in an attempt to “scare and threaten the village committee into allowing the birthday party”.

Local procurators later filed charges of disorderly behaviour against Wang on Tuesday.

Pakistan Citizen’s Portal enables expat to return after almost three decades

The Pakistan Citizen Portal (PCP) established by Prime Minister Imran Khan recently received appreciation once again after it helped a Pakistani expatriate woman visit her homeland after 29 years.

According to reports, the woman’s brother Shahid Hussain shared that his sister, residing in Germany, was unable to visit her country because of visa issues. He said that despite several previous attempts of sponsoring his sister’s visit, the issue remained unresolved.

However, the matter was finally resolved after he registered a complaint on the portal. He praised the portal for facilitating him at every step and helping his sister visit her country.

Hussain praised PM Imran for his efforts to help his countrymen.

According to statistics issued by the PCP, the federal government resolved over 1.5 million complaints in response to over 1.7 million complaints registered with the Pakistan Citizen Portal during the period from October 2018 to 23 January 2020. The portal resolved 1,557,000 complaints leaving behind a backlog of 156,352 complaints.

  • Pakistani Love: The Story of Survivors

Pakistani Love: The Story of Survivors

“But he’s never been married,” was something I heard often when I told people about Moayyed. It was blurted out, said pointedly, sometimes unintentional and sometimes very intentional.

I had become immune to it because being with him meant that it didn’t matter.

    Remember your far-fetched wishes?

Yaar, bus Pakistan saare matches jeet jaye, India saare matches har jaye tou hum jeet jayein gay, Please Allah, all planets align with the north star on February 31st, Usman Buzdar grows a tongue and Aamir Liaqat loses his…

Imagine all this and you’d still have very little idea of what needed to happen for Moayyed Jafri and Amnah Shah to get hitched.

There is no greater love, nothing at all, than the love for your children. I should know. I have three of them.

    One girl and two boys.

    14, 13, 10.

My heart beats three times, my day complete, after I see three smiles and as I slip into tired slumber, I give thanks three times.

Four times now, because I had three children before I met Moayyed.

Baba, how come people in natural disaster movies dodge every deadly accident while everyone around them is dying, ” I remember asking my father as a child.

“Stories are biographies of survivors. All of nature’s forces combined with relentless will, create survivors and that’s what a miracle actually is”, he used to say.

Moayyed hit pause. He stepped back and took leave from his own life’s desires to help his family after his father passed away. I didn’t have to take leave from my life like he did but I did give mine up for my children. I never, ever regretted it. No mother ever can. I didn’t wish or want for anything except for my three and life didn’t pass me by. But when I met him, life hit pause, as if allowing him a moment to hit play and catch up with me.

“I love life,” I would claim, hopefully optimistic in what people assumed was a difficult life.

“It’s alright,” would be his somewhat cynically said response.

We were ying and yang, opposites, in every way. Ours was a love of heart and mind, a fusion of the cultures of the edgy northern mountains and the grounded central plains. We came together like gratefulness does. A loss leading into happiness.

But reaching that level of certainty, that there was no running away from this, was only half the battle. We were well aware that although it is the year 2020, we live in Pakistan and come from relatively conservative families.

It took two years for him to tell his family after which I broke the news to mine.

The hardest part of finding love elsewhere is telling your children that someone else is about to be just as important as them.

You know the song you listen to when you’re in love? My children have always been that song for me. On repeat, they have lifted me up, cradled me, comforted me. My children are my strength, not just partners in my dreams, but advocates for my right at a shot at happiness.

I was so scared to tell them.

There is nothing bigger in life than acceptance. Being accepted for who you are and what you want. Surviving life’s big tests and being apprehensive to start new ones. There is nothing bigger than knowing no matter what you choose, the people that love you will stand by you – as long as you are happy.

My young, small children approved. Overwhelmed and teary-eyed I hugged them. It  wasn’t just their approval, it was something bigger. It was all doubts shattered by that moment, all uncertainties that typical societal mouthpieces had thrown at me.

Akeli Maa aur teen bache, is shehr mai kaise reh sakte hai?

    Shattered.

It was a feeling which words fall pathetically short of expression to describe.

Surviving what life throws at you is nothing short of a miracle. When Moayyed and I first met, it wasn’t love at first sight. We were both too good at surviving for it to be so simple. It was intrigue, a simple mysterious desire to know each other. It was quiet at first, as we looked, talked, smiled, letting each other in, layer by layer, like to love.

We were survivors, ready for a miracle.

Marrying Moayyed is probably one of the easiest things I have done in my life. Not because it’s love, but because we are easy. We were transparent in what we wanted, truthful and pragmatic. Our marriage is a triumph, not only of love but of hope over dejection. A defiance of stereotypes and a challenge to the toxic standards of normalcy.

Hai dekho, teen bachey hain aur kunware larke se shaadi.

Is larke kay parents kaise maan gaye?

    Apne bachon ka nahi socha?

Society is ruthless but we don’t need to be. These words bounce off from us – my children, myself and Moayyed. People can say what they like and they will. But having the courage to ignore them and do what you know is right – surviving – that is the real miracle.

  • Most of our politicians are spending their Valentine’s Day with one man

Most of our politicians are spending their Valentine’s Day with one man

Valentine’s Day 2020 is on a Friday and we asked a few politicians what they are planning to do on V day. And most of them are spending their day with one man: Turkish President Tayyib Erdoğan.

Erdogan will be visiting Pakistan this week

Erdoğan is set to visit Pakistan on the 13th and will be addressing a joint session of Parliament on Friday the 14th of February. When asked PML-Q’s Moonis Elahi, PPP’s Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar and Rehman Malik said they would be in Parliament to hear Erdoğan speak.

While PTI’s Hammad Azhar said he will be working, we’re assuming that he will also be attending Erdoğan’s session.

But not everyone has a date with Erdoğan. PTI’s rising politician Ali Tareen says he will be taking his wife out in the morning and will spend the evening with his team, Multan Sultans as they train for the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

Ali Tareen is the owner of Multan Sultans which is set to play the PSL, starting next week

But PML-N’s Hina Butt has one of the best V day plans. She says, “I love Valentine’s. I love expressing my love to the important people in my life by making them handwritten cards, chocolates, precious gifts, flowers. My father is my first love and always has been my first Valentine. I always give him a red rose and my son gives me a hand-written Valentine’s day card. This year I am also getting a Valentine’s basket make for Maryam Nawaz with a picture of her and her father, Mian Nawaz Sharif sahib, saying “Every girl’s first love is her dad” as they are not together at the moment. I know it will make her happy on Valentine’s Day.”

Hina Butt has a super fun V day planned

And that’s not all. “Also this year I am doing something special. I am treating myself by getting a puppy. My son, Momi and I will go to find a pet in the day and get a Pug or a fluffy cat,” she says adding, “Pets give you unconditional love. Then I plan to pamper myself in the spa and relax.”

Hina is also planning to celebrate her evening in style – with her girls.

“Later at night I am planning to celebrate ‘Galentine’s Day’ (Valentine’s Day with my girlfriends),” she says. “I will date my best friends. Getting the gang together, book a limo, get dressed up, go to a fancy restaurant, and order the special Valentine’s Day menu and do something fun as a group.”

  • Govt mulls new rules to ‘control’ digital media in Pakistan

Govt mulls new rules to ‘control’ digital media in Pakistan

The government is planning to impose new rules that could radically redefine the digital landscape of Pakistan, ProPakistani reported Wednesday.

According to reports, the government wants to curb blasphemous content for social media and the new rules would allow institutions to control all online content in the country.

The new rules — named the Citizens Protection Against Online Harm Rules — are a sort of extension of legislation like the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) and would allow the government to bypass industry stakeholders following approval of the federal cabinet.

While the document (available here courtesy of Digital Rights Monitor) talks about social media companies, the definition for “social media companies” is broad enough to bring any company with an online presence under its ambit. If companies don’t abide by any of the rules in the 14-page document, they’ll be blocked in Pakistan.

The move comes days after a Senate panel rejected a proposed move to be initiated by the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) for regulating web TV and over-the-top (OTT) media service in the country following the authority failed to establish its jurisdiction for doing so before the house’s body.

The Senate Functional Committee on Human Rights which met with Senator Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar in the chair held a detailed discussion on PEMRA’s proposal of regulating web TV and OTT content.
