Trump names vaccine skeptic RFK Jr. to head health dept

Donald Trump on Thursday tapped anti-vaccine activist and conspiracy theorist Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as his secretary of health in the latest provocative nomination from the incoming Republican president.

“We want you to come up with things and ideas and what you’ve been talking about for a long time and I think you’re going to do some unbelievable things,” Trump told Kennedy Jr. during an event at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida on Thursday evening.

Moving quickly since his election last week, Trump has embarked on a campaign of political shock and awe as he rolls out an administration designed to upend — and in some cases literally dismantle — the US government.

Several of Trump’s choices for top jobs — including a TV news anchor at the helm of the Pentagon and an ally embroiled in sexual misconduct allegations for attorney general — have unnerved the Washington establishment.

Trump also announced Thursday that his personal attorneys, Todd Blanche and Emil Bove, who defended him at trial this year over hush money payments to porn star Stormy Daniels, would serve as deputy attorneys general.

Kennedy, a scion of the famous political family who is popularly known as RFK Jr., is a longtime environmental campaigner who abandoned a fringe bid for the presidency to endorse Trump against Democratic candidate Kamala Harris.

Trump had said previously he wanted Kennedy to “go wild” in changing health care, and the two campaigned together, promising to “Make America Healthy Again.”

    Vaccine scepticism

If approved by the Senate, which Trump’s Republican Party controls, 70-year-old Kennedy will take over the Health and Human Services Department, a mammoth institution with a budget of close to $2 trillion.

In a statement explaining his choice, Trump echoed many of Kennedy’s talking points, saying, “Americans have been crushed by the industrial food complex and drug companies who have engaged in deception, misinformation, and disinformation.”

The nomination could meet opposition, given Kennedy’s history of promoting medical conspiracy theories  — including the disproven claim that childhood vaccines cause autism — and saying that the COVID-19 vaccine was deadly.

He is also burdened by a string of colourful and even bizarre stories from his personal life.

These include his statement that a parasitic worm once entered his “brain and ate a portion of it and then died.”

An admission this year that he was behind the long unsolved mystery of a dead bear dumped in New York’s Central Park a decade ago raised eyebrows.

    Energy

Trump has yet to select treasury and commerce chiefs, or an education secretary, whose department he wants to abolish.

During the event in Mar-a-Lago on Thursday evening, he said that wealthy North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum would be appointed secretary of the interior, putting him in charge of national parks which could be opened to more oil exploration.

“We’re going to slash energy costs,” Trump told the event organized by the America First Policy Institute, where he was introduced by libertarian Argentinian President Javier Milei and Hollywood A-lister Sylvester Stallone.

“Rocky” star Stallone told the audience, which included ever-present Tesla CEO Elon Musk, that Trump was a “mythical character.”

Trump joked that he couldn’t get Musk out of his Mar-a-Lago resort.

“He likes this place, I can’t get him out of here,” he said. “I like having him here as well. He’s done a fantastic job, an incredible mind.”

Trump’s first recruitments — including secretary of state pick Marco Rubio, a traditional conservative on foreign policy — were seen as relatively mainstream choices.

But then he caused concern even among some in the Republican Party as he appeared to put preference for personal loyalty above expertise or suitability.

    – Personal lawyers –

A major shock was naming Matt Gaetz — a firebrand Republican far-right figure in Congress who was drawn into a years-long criminal probe into sex trafficking — as future attorney general.

Gaetz denies wrongdoing and has never faced charges but was still being investigated by the House Ethics Committee.

That decision followed Trump’s nomination of former Democratic congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard — who met Syria’s president Bashar al-Assad and echoes Russian President Vladimir Putin’s talking points — to take charge of the nation’s most sensitive secrets as director of national intelligence.

Trump recruited Pete Hegseth — a combat veteran who has no experience running large organizations but is a host on Trump’s favorite Fox News network — as defense secretary.

Trump and his aides have vowed that much of his second term will be about clearing the deck of federal officials who acted as a restraining influence on his populist, right-wing agenda during his first term.

Gaetz’s appointment would hand Trump, whose election likely means being freed from a string of serious criminal investigations, the advantage of a fierce partisan at the top of the Justice Department.

He intends to place a third personal attorney at the department by nominating John Sauer as solicitor general, which represents the US government at the Supreme Court.

Trump has repeatedly threatened to go after a variety of political opponents.

Rohit, Kohli wasted my son’s 10 years, says Sanju Samson’s father

Indian batsman Sanju Samson’s father, Vishwanath Samson, has accused Indian star cricketers Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni, Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma of wasting 10 precious years of his son’s career by not giving him a chance to play.

Talking to Indian media, he said,  “There are three to four captains and coaches like (MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Rahul Dravid) whose decisions ruined 10 years of my son’s career. They hurt him.”

Sanju’s father also took a dig at former cricketer Samson Viswanath, saying, “The thing which hurt me after Sanju’s first century of his career against Bangladesh was the comments of cricketer Samson Viswanath in which he said, ‘Sanju scored a century against whom? Against Bangladesh?’”

Vishwanath said, “A century is a century, and Srikanth himself scored only 26 runs against Bangladesh. Sanju is a cricketer with a classical touch like Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid.”

Sanju Samson is part of the Indian playing XI in the ongoing four-match T20 series against South Africa.

In the opening match of the series, Sanju played a record-breaking 107-run innings off 50 balls. With his brilliant century, he played an important role in the victory of the Indian team.

Earlier, Sanju had played a brilliant innings of 111 runs off 47 balls for India against Bangladesh.

  • Film’s ‘search for Palestine’ takes centre stage at Cairo festival

Film’s ‘search for Palestine’ takes centre stage at Cairo festival

The tale of a distinctly Palestinian road trip — through refugee camps and Israeli checkpoints — takes centre stage in director Rashid Masharawi’s latest film, which debuted at this year’s Cairo International Film Festival.

“It’s a search for home, a search for Palestine, for ourselves,” Masharawi told AFP a day after Wednesday’s world premiere of his new film “Passing Dreams”.

It kicked off the Middle East’s oldest film festival, which opened with a traditional dabkeh dance performance by a troupe from the war-torn Gaza Strip.

Masharawi’s film follows Sami, a 12-year-old boy, and his uncle and cousin on a quest to find his beloved pet pigeon, which has flown away from their home in a refugee camp in the occupied West Bank.

Told that pigeons always return to their birthplace, the family attempts to “follow the bird home” — driving a small red camper van from Qalandia camp and Bethlehem in the occupied West Bank to the Old City of Jerusalem and the Israeli city of Haifa.

Their odyssey, Masharawi says, becomes a “deeply symbolic journey” that represents an inversion of the family’s original displacement from Haifa during the 1948 war that led to the creation of the State of Israel — a period Palestinians refer to as the Nakba, or “catastrophe”.

“It’s no coincidence we’re in places that have a deep significance to Palestinian history,” the director said, speaking to AFP after a more intimate second screening on Thursday.

    – ‘From Ground Zero’ –
The bittersweet tale is a far cry from Masharawi’s other project featured at the Cairo film festival: “From Ground Zero”.

The anthology, supervised by the veteran director, showcases 22 shorts by filmmakers in Gaza, shot against the backdrop of war.

For that project, Masharawi — who was the first Palestinian director officially selected for the Cannes Film Festival for his film “Haifa” in 1996 — “wanted to act as a bridge between global audiences” and filmmakers on the ground.

In April, he told AFP the anthology intended to expose “the lie of self-defence”, which he said was Israel’s justification for its devastating military campaign in Gaza.

The war broke out following Palestinian militant group Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attack on southern Israel, which resulted in 1,206 deaths, according to an AFP tally of official Israeli figures.

Israel has since killed more than 43,700 people in the Gaza Strip, according to the Hamas-controlled territory’s health ministry.

“As filmmakers, we must document this through the language of cinema,” Masharawi said, adding that filmmaking “defends our land far better than any military or political speeches”.

    – Smuggled onto set –
Speaking to an enthralled audience, the 62-year-old director — donning his signature fedora — called for change in Palestinian filmmaking.

“Our cinema can’t always only be a reaction to Israeli actions,” he said.

“It must be the action itself.”

A self-taught director born in a Gaza refugee camp before moving to Ramallah, Masharawi is intimately familiar with the “obstacles to filmmaking under occupation” — including “separation walls, barriers, who’s allowed to go where”.

Like the family in the film, “you never know if authorities will let you get to your location”, he said, especially since Masharawi refuses “on principle” to seek permits from Israeli authorities.

Instead, his crew often resorts to makeshift schemes — including “smuggling in” actors from the West Bank who do not have permission to visit Israeli-annexed east Jerusalem.

“If you ask (Israeli authorities) for permission to shoot in Jerusalem, you’re giving them legitimacy that Jerusalem is theirs,” he said Thursday to raucous applause from audience members, many of them draped in Palestinian keffiyehs.

Organisers cancelled the Cairo film festival last year after calls for the suspension of artistic and cultural activities across the Arab world in solidarity with Palestinians.

But this week, keffiyehs have dotted the red carpet, while audience members wore pins bearing the Palestinian flag and the map of historic Palestine.

Festival president Hussein Fahmy voiced solidarity “with our brothers in Gaza and Lebanon”, where Israel’s bombing campaign and ground offensive have killed 3,360 people.

Pride of place, Fahmy said, has been given to Palestinian cinema, with a handful of films showing during the festival and a competition to crown a winner among the 22 filmmakers in “From Ground Zero”.

  • Bushra Bibi officially enters politics: reports

Bushra Bibi officially enters politics: reports

Bushra Bibi, wife of the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan, has made an official entry into politics by chairing the party leadership meeting on November 13 in Peshawar, PTI sources revealed to Geo News.

Chief Minister (CM) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Ali Amin Gandapur is reportedly assisting the former first lady in political matters, noting that the message has been conveyed to “Punjab and KP leaderships to obey the direction of Bushra Bibi” regarding the November 24 protest.

Sources further claim that Bushra Bibi has been playing a crucial role in the political matters of the party since November 1, adding that she summoned the party parliament member to discuss the strategy for the November 24 protest in Islamabad.

However, Barrister Saif, KP’s Information and Broadcasting Minister, while appearing on Geo News programme Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Saath on Thursday, rejected that Bushra Bibi had chaired the party meeting in Peshawar.

He claimed that Bushra Bibi had indeed met with the party’s senior leadership, but “she had not participated in the party formal meeting.”

“Bushra Bibi does not hold any party position, so she cannot participate in the meetings,” the Minister added.

Barrister Saif also asserted that Bibi’s “input will be limited to prayers” with regard to her involvement in the party’s upcoming November 24 rally in Islamabad.

Barrister Saif, while responding to widespread claims that senior party leadership is showing reservation on the protest date, stated: “The party founder has given the final call for the November 24 protest.”

“If party leaders have reservations about the protest date, it would be their opinion, but the protest will happen on the same date that the party founder has given,” he clarified.

Imran Khan, founder of PTI, announced the “final call” for a protest in Islamabad on November 24, from Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi on Wednesday.

  • PTI USA ‘apologises’ for prior anti-America remarks; leader rubbishes claim

PTI USA ‘apologises’ for prior anti-America remarks; leader rubbishes claim

Journalist Murtaza Solangi has shared an alleged agreement that showed that the USA chapter of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has hired US lobbying firm Fenton/Arlock LLC to “create a favorable and sympathetic understanding of Imran Khan and PTI in the United States.”

However, PTI’s leader Azhar Mashwani has refuted the claims and the November 14 tweet in which Solangi posted the agreement, calling the alleged document “fake.” Users pointed out that the lobbying firm’s name is misspelled “Arlock instead of Arlook.”

It should be noted that in 2022, PTI USA chapter hired Fenton/Arlook to improve the party’s image in the United States.

Interestingly, in the agreement dated November 7, PTI USA has said it “acknowledges and apologizes for any prior anti-U.S. remarks made by party leaders that may have been misinterpreted or caused any strain in the bilateral relationship.”

Furthermore, the agreement also alleged that PTI USA, which is representing Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf “is committed to prioritising US interests within the framework of Pakistan’s sovereignty including supporting US objectives in Pakistan and countering the growing influence of neighbouring country in areas that may conflict with US geopolitical and economic interests.”

It should be noted that PTI blamed the US for conspiring against its government when Imran Khan was ousted from power through a no-confidence motion in 2022. Founder PTI Imran Khan, in an infamous rally, waved a page in front of a charged crowd, which was allegedly the cypher sent to Islamabad by Pakistan’s ambassador in Washington.

The Intercept, a US-based news website, in August 2023 published what it claimed to be the “cypher” that hinted the US administration wanted to remove Khan from power.

However, later, Khan and his party changed their narratives multiple times while the American-Pakistani community continuously lobbied among US politicians for the release of Khan from prison.

The agreement, since viral on social media, also stipulated the scope of services which the lobbying firm would provide on behalf of PTI USA for a retainer fee of $40,000 per month.

“Utilizing Fenton/Arlock LLC’s influence, contacts, and resources to help reshape PTI’s image within US political circles, with the goal of fostering a positive narrative and securing political goodwill towards PTI’s platform and leadership,” read the agreement.

As Donald Trump swept the US presidential elections earlier this month, his victory created a moment of happiness within PTI leadership and supporters because they’ve pinned their hopes on Trump’s intervention to get Imran Khan released from jail.

Former deputy speaker and prominent PTI leader, Qasim Khan Suri, took to X last month to blame the Democratic Party for Khan’s fall from power instead of blaming the United States.

Suri posted his speech from 2022, when he was the deputy assembly speaker, in which he blamed the United States for conspiring against Khan due to his alleged “independent foreign policy, economy and the sanctity of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).” Yet, the caption Suri wrote was in clear contrast with the contents of the video, writing, “The crushing defeat of the US Democratic Party, which played an important role in bringing down the government of Imran Khan, in the US presidential election made local facilitators sleepless, many of them immediately issued statements to change their father.”

Model and host Mathira has attributed indecent viral videos to artificial intelligence (AI).

The videos, allegedly featuring Mathira, went viral on social media. Now, she has responded to the clips.

In a tweet she posted on X (formerly Twitter) she wrote, “People are misusing my name and my photoshoot pictures and adding fake stuff. Shame on them and keep me away from this nonsense.”

In an Instagram story, she wrote, “These are AI-generated videos. I am not present in these dirty videos. I have tattoos all over my body and fingers.”

She said in her story, “These are 2-year-old videos that caused me serious problems, and I contacted the FIA about this issue.”

She further wrote in her story, “There are attempts to tarnish my character through fake videos on social media platforms. I have never made such dirty videos. Please don’t tarnish my screen personality and don’t try to pretend to be something I’m not.”

  • Sialkot woman cut into pieces by in-laws

Sialkot woman cut into pieces by in-laws

A domestic fight took the life of a woman from tehsil Daska of Sialkot.

Media reports suggest that the 30-year-old woman was killed by her mother-in-law and sister-in-law on Tuesday. The victim’s body was then put into a sack and thrown into a drain.

The case came to light when Shabbir Ahmed, a resident of district Gujranwala, complained to the police that his daughter Zara Bibi, who was married to Qadeer Ahmed of tehsil Daska, had gone missing.

Zara and Qadeer had been married for four years, but Qadeer worked abroad while Zara lived with her in-laws.

Shabbir told the police that when he called his daughter two days back, he found her mobile phone switched off. Worried, he went to meet his daughter at her in-laws’ house in the village of Kotli Meeran in Daska. There, he found out that she was not home, and her in-laws expressed ignorance of her whereabouts.

Zara’s father alleged that her mother-in-law and her sister-in-law used to assault his daughter.

The local Police Station registered an FIR against Zara’s in-laws, namely her mother-in-law, sisters-in-law and their sons.

A police investigation revealed that the victim’s body was found in a sewage drain.

Further investigation revealed that she was killed and her body was dismembered by the killers.

Geo News reports that the suspects confessed to the murder during the investigation, after which the police recovered the body parts from a sack in a drain.

It was further revealed in the probe that the mother-in-law is actually the maternal aunt of the victim, and Zara had just returned to Pakistan from Saudi Arabia with her two-and-a-half-year-old son.  She is reported to have come to visit often in the past as well.

The reason behind the domestic feud was that Qadeer used to send all the money to his wife’s account, which perturbed Zara’s mother-in-law, Sughran Bibi.

The latter first tried to get her son to divorce his wife by accusing her of having loose morals. When that did not work out, she and her daughters planned the murder. To execute the plan, the mother and daughters lured a relative from Lahore, Naveed, to help him go to Italy. Thus, they first choked Zara to death, then cut her body into pieces and then burnt her face so that she could not be identified.

They stuffed the pieces of the body in five sacks. After this, Naveed went back to Lahore while the mother-in-law, with the help of her daughters and grandsons, threw the body in the drain.

As Zara’s father informed the police about her daughter’s disappearance, the cops took the grandsons into custody and interrogated them, who revealed the whole truth.

Now all the suspects involved are in police custody.
