Boy, 14, stabs man to death over ‘sectarian argument’ in Gujrat

A 14-year-old boy in Gujrat reportedly murdered a middle-aged man following an argument over a sectarian issue at Chak Chohdo village on Sunday.

Teenager Rehan, son of the Imam of the village mosque, allegedly had a brief altercation over a sectarian issue with a fellow resident, Syed Nazeer Hussain Shah.

As per a report filed by Dawn, the boy repeatedly stabbed the victim with a knife and fled the scene. The injured man was shifted to the Kunjah Tehsil Headquarters (THQ) Hospital in a critical condition, where he later succumbed to his wounds.

Doctors handed over the body to the victim’s family after the autopsy.

A team from the Punjab Forensic Science Agency (PFSA) also collected evidence from the crime scene. A case has been registered against three suspects – Rehan, his uncle and father- on the complaint of Shabeer Hussain Shah, the brother of the deceased.

Locals and the police say that the prime suspect seems to be a religious fanatic.

Raids are being conducted to arrest the suspects. However, the crime charges would only be ascertained after an interrogation.
Incidents of religious fanaticism have gained momentum over the past few months, with a number of incidents of mob lynching and harassment of minorities.

The National Assembly of Pakistan on Sunday passed a resolution condemning the recent Swat mob lynching incident, demanding action against the culprits.

The resolution, presented by Federal Law Minister Nazir Tarar, was approved by a majority vote.

“Action must be taken against the perpetrators of such heinous acts,” stated the resolution.

It further underscored the need for both federal and provincial governments to ensure the protection of minorities.

“Although we may have our differences, we must unite on certain fundamental issues. Any incident akin to the one in Swat, regardless of where it occurs in the country, should prompt immediate and decisive action by the respective governments,” stated the law minister.

Furthermore, the Chairman of the Islamic Ideological Council (IIC), Dr Allama Muhammad Raghib Hussain Naeemi, also strongly condemned the incident, saying, “No individual or group is allowed to punish anyone legally, morally, or according to Sharia.”

He further said that the accused should be identified through forensic and mobile geo-location in the Swat case and punished according to the law.

Chairman IIC also said that in Islam, burning a person’s body is a great sin; there is an intense punishment for this act.

On June 20, an unfortunate incident took place when a man accused of blasphemy was lynched and burned by a violent mob in Swat district.

Hasan Iqbal Chisti slammed for misogynistic song against girl’s education

Clerical singer Hassan Iqbal Chisti, known for singing controversial songs that he claims are devotional, is again under fire for yet another rendition against girl’s education, titled ‘Apni Dhi Schoolo Hata Le| Othy Dance Kardi Payi Ae|’ [Take your daughter out of school, she is dancing there.]

Chishti was slammed by social media for his misogynistic approach.

  • Is Pakistan considering striking TTP in Afghanistan under Operation Azm-e-Istehkam?

Is Pakistan considering striking TTP in Afghanistan under Operation Azm-e-Istehkam?

The Khorasan Diary has posted an alert on X (formerly Twitter) on June 23 that a high-ranking official from the government told the outlet that the government may start surgical strikes against the Tehreek-i-Taliban (TTP) inside Afghanistan.

The post read, “A high-ranking Pakistani official has revealed that the government may authorise cross-border operations against Pakistani Taliban hideouts as part of the newly announced nationwide operation against militant outfits.”

It further elaborated, “Pakistani government will not hesitate to pursue and neutralise terrorist targets across the border,” the official stated on condition of anonymity.”

In recent years, terrorism in Pakistan has seen a surge as it accuses neighbouring Afghanistan of inaction against the TTP.

Pakistan also conducted cross-border strikes against the terrorists inside Afghanistan this year as the Afghan authorities shifted the blame on Pakistan that dealing with TTP is Pakistan’s own responsibility.

  • Gunmen attack Churches, Synagogues in Russia

Gunmen attack Churches, Synagogues in Russia

Gunmen attacked churches and synagogues in Russia’s North Caucasus region of Dagestan on Sunday, killing at least eight police and national guard officers and a priest, officials said.

The unidentified gunmen launched simultaneous attacks in Dagestan’s largest city of Makhachkala and in the coastal city of Derbent.

Russia’s Investigative Committee said it had opened criminal probes over “acts of terror” in Dagestan, a largely Muslim region of Russia neighbouring Chechnya.

The leader of Dagestan, Sergei Melikov, wrote on Telegram: “This evening in Derbent and Makhachkala unknown (attackers) made attempts to destabilise the situation in society.”

“We know who is behind these terrorist attacks and what objective they are pursuing,” he added later, without specifying but referring to the war in Ukraine.

“We must understand that war comes to our homes too. We felt it, but today we face it,” he said.

Melikov said the “active phase” of operations in Derbent and Makhachkala had ended and that “six bandits have been liquidated”.

The authorities will try to find “all the members of these sleeper cells who prepared (the attacks) and who were prepared, including abroad”, he added.

Russian officials said police had killed four gunmen in Makhachkala and two in Derbent.

Patriarch Kirill, head of the Russian Orthodox Church and a fervent supporter of the Kremlin, said the “enemy” was seeking to destroy “inter-religious peace” in Russia, without naming who was responsible.

The attacks targeted “two Orthodox churches, a synagogue and a police checkpoint”, the National Anti-terrorism Committee said in a statement to RIA Novosti news agency.

“As a result of the terrorist attacks, according to preliminary information, a priest from the Russian Orthodox Church and police officers were killed.”

The Russian Orthodox Church said archpriest Nikolai Kotelnikov was “brutally killed” in Derbent.

In all, six officers were killed and 12 wounded in the attacks, the spokeswoman for Dagestan’s interior ministry, Gayana Gariyeva, told RIA Novosti.

The ministry later added that a local police chief had died from his wounds.

Russia’s National Guard meanwhile said one of its officers had been killed in Derbent and several others wounded.

The Dagestan interior ministry said a total of 16 people, including 13 police officers, were wounded in the attacks.

In a separate incident, the ministry said gunmen had also shot at a police car in the village of Sergokal, 65 kilometres (40 miles) from Makhachkala, wounding one officer.

    Synagogues on fire

Sunday is a religious holiday, Pentecost Sunday, in the Russian Orthodox Church.

Dagestan’s interior ministry said 19 people took shelter inside a church in Makhachkala and were later led out to safety.

Gunmen also attacked synagogues in both cities.

“The synagogue in Derbent is on fire,” the chairman of the public council of Russia’s Federation of Jewish Communities, Boruch Gorin, wrote on Telegram.

“The synagogue in Makhachkala has also been set on fire and burnt down,” he said.

The rabbi of Makhachkala, Rami Davidov, later told RIA Novosti that no one was killed or injured there.

The Russian Jewish Congress said on its website the Derbent synagogue was attacked about 40 minutes before evening prayers.

Gunmen fired at police and security guards and threw in Molotov cocktails, it said, adding that the attack in Makhachkala was similar.

State news agency TASS cited a law enforcement source as saying the “gunmen who carried out attacks in Makhachkala and Derbent are supporters of an international terrorist organisation”, without naming it.

Russia’s FSB security service in April said it had arrested four people in Dagestan on suspicion of plotting the deadly attack on Moscow’s Crocus City Hall concert venue in March, which was claimed by the Islamic State group.

Militants from Dagestan are known to have travelled to join IS in Syria, and in 2015, the group declared it had established a “franchise” in the North Caucasus.

Dagestan lies east of Chechnya, where Russian authorities battled separatists in two brutal wars, first in 1994-1996 and then in 1999-2000.

Since the defeat of Chechen insurgents, Russian authorities have been locked in a simmering conflict with Islamist militants from across the North Caucasus that has killed scores of civilians and police.
