BYD enters partnership to launch electric vehicles in Pakistan

The Hub Power Company Limited (HUBCO) announced on Friday that its wholly-owned subsidiary, Hub Power Holdings, through its associated company Mega Motor Company (Private) Limited, is set to venture into the electric vehicle (EV) market in collaboration with BYD Auto Industry Company Limited.

BYD is globally recognised as a leading manufacturer of new energy vehicles.

The announcement was made in a notice to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), where HUBCO detailed the new strategic initiative. “We hereby convey the following information: Hub Power Holdings Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of The Hub Power Company Limited, through its associated company, Mega Motor Company (Private) Limited, is entering into a new line of business in electric vehicles, with BYD Auto Industry Company Limited, in Pakistan,” the notice stated.

This partnership is a significant step as Pakistan aims to transition towards more sustainable and energy-efficient transportation solutions.

According to Business Recorder, in April, BYD had already signalled its intentions to collaborate with local partner Mega Conglomerate (Private) Limited to bring innovative New Energy Vehicle (NEV) solutions to the Pakistani market.

BYD, which surpassed Tesla in 2023 to become the largest producer of electric vehicles worldwide, is poised to leverage its expertise to drive this new venture.

This collaboration comes at a critical juncture as Pakistan grapples with environmental challenges, including air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

The introduction of BYD’s EVs is expected to provide a cleaner alternative to traditional gasoline and diesel vehicles.

The notice from HUBCO also mentioned that the finalisation of this venture will involve the execution of definitive agreements and the purchase of necessary assets, pending corporate and regulatory approvals.

  • After ex-COAS Bajwa, PTI begging ‘someone else’ now for relief: Khawaja Asif

After ex-COAS Bajwa, PTI begging ‘someone else’ now for relief: Khawaja Asif

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif took Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) to the cleaners saying that PTI is “begging someone else” for relief because previously that “someone” was former Army Chief General (retd) Qamar Javed Bajwa.

Asif alleged that Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP) leader Aun Chaudhry hid former Prime Minister Imran Khan in the car’s trunk to take him to General (retd) Amjad Awan’s house.

Asif also claimed that Imran Khan tried everything to seek relief falling short of holding General Bajwa’s feet.

The Defence Minister’s hard-hitting statement came in response to PTI Secretary-General Omar Ayub Khan’s criticism of the government’s new economic budget.

    10 easiest European citizenships

Many people from developing countries aspire to acquire citizenship in European states. Some countries offer relatively straightforward paths to citizenship, while others present significant challenges. Sweden stands out as the easiest country in Europe for obtaining citizenship, whereas Estonia and Latvia are the most challenging.

A recent study by CIS analysed Eurostat immigration data from 2009 to 2021 to identify which countries have the highest and lowest rates of non-EU residents acquiring citizenship.

The analysis revealed that the nine most challenging countries to obtain citizenship are located in Central Europe. Estonia ranks as the most difficult country for non-EU citizens to naturalise, with the lowest average acquisition rate—approximately one in 200 residents. Additionally, the acquisition rate for men in Estonia is lower at 0.58 percent compared to 0.69 percent for women.

Latvia, the Czech Republic, and Lithuania also have acquisition rates of less than 1 percent for non-Europeans, contrasting sharply with the average of 3.56 percent across European countries. Austria, Liechtenstein, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Germany follow, granting citizenship to about one in fifty non-EU residents. Denmark, outside Central Europe, presents the next highest hurdle with an acquisition rate of 2 percent.

Over the past decade, six of the ten most challenging countries have seen an increase in citizenship grants year-on-year, particularly Denmark, which experienced a notable rise. Germany’s acquisition rate remained stable, while Latvia, Lithuania, and Slovenia saw declines.

Many countries implement various programs aimed at attracting foreigners, including opportunities for investment, as well as citizenship and tax benefits.

Individuals seeking migration often favour Golden Visa and Golden Passport routes, terms that are sometimes used interchangeably despite minor distinctions.

10 Easiest European Countries to Get Citizenship

According to the report, Sweden ranks as the easiest country, with nearly one in ten (9.3 Perce) non-EU residents obtaining citizenship—more than double the EU average.

Sweden boasts the highest acceptance rates for both genders, with women experiencing a slightly higher acceptance rate of 10.02 percent compared to 8.66 percent for men.

Norway, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Iceland follow as the second to fifth easiest countries to acquire citizenship, with an acquisition rate of one in 25 (4 percent).

Data shows that northern European countries generally have the highest citizenship acquisition rates, with Sweden, Norway, Iceland, and Finland leading the pack.

In southern Europe, Portugal emerges as the easiest, while the Netherlands, Ireland, and the United Kingdom are the most accessible Western European states for citizenship. The UK ranks eighth, with nearly three in 50 (3.2 percent) residents granted citizenship.

Poland and Croatia are the easiest countries in Central Europe for changing nationality, with acquisition rates of 4 percent and 3.9 percent respectively. Northern and Western Europe present the most accessible regions for nationality changes, with an acquisition rate of 5.9 percent compared to 1.9 percent in Central Europe and 3.6 percent in the South.

  • Denmark’s men footballers refuse salary rise to secure equal pay for women

Denmark’s men footballers refuse salary rise to secure equal pay for women

Denmark’s male footballers have refused a salary increase for playing for the national side to gain their female counterparts equal basic pay, the players’ union said on Friday.

“The men’s team chose not to ask for a salary increase … to improve the conditions of the women’s team,” union spokesperson Magnus Hviid told AFP.

He welcomed “an extraordinary measure to help take this small step in the right direction”, but acknowledged there were “still more glass ceilings to break to ensure equal opportunities and conditions within national teams”.

Hviid said the action “obtained the same basic salary for the women’s national team and the men’s national team, as well as better insurance coverage for the women’s team”.

The agreement, signed at the end of May, provides for identical match bonuses for women and men during away matches.

However for the moment due to no bonus for home matches there remains a disparity in the overall pay between the women’s and men’s national teams.

The Danish football federation (DBU) and the union have agreed to bring forward negotiations on a new deal for the women’s national team after the summer break.

Denmark are competing in Euro 2024 and are joint second in Group C after two draws against England and Slovenia.

Fans can be a blessing for celebrities, offering adoration and love. However, once in a while a fan comes along who’s more creepy than cute.

The beautiful and talented Neelum Muneer had an encounter with a crazy fan. She revealed a shocking experience on ‘Hasna Mana Hai’, where she exposed a fan who had been pretending to be a girl and talking to her on the phone for a long time.
The host, Tabish Hashmi, asked Neelum Muneer if she had ever encountered a fan who started off seemingly nice but later turned out to be very obsessive and even scary.

Neelum Muneer said “It’s really weird, some fans don’t understand what to talk to me about when they meet me. This one fan would call me, pretending to be a girl, and ask to talk to someone else. When I would respond, he would say he had dialed the wrong number. Later, I discovered that the person was a man who had been posing as a girl to talk to me. He had been doing it for a long time. It was so strange and creepy.”

  • Modi leads yoga day event in Indian-occupied Kashmir

Modi leads yoga day event in Indian-occupied Kashmir

Stretching, arching his back and kneeling on a mat, India’s Hindu nationalist Prime Minister Narendra Modi led hundreds of people performing yoga in India-held Kashmir on Friday.

The exercises in Srinagar marked the 10th International Yoga Day, Modi’s own brainchild.

But while yoga is not itself a religious practice, it has its origins in Hindu philosophy — the god Shiva is said to have been the first yogi — and many Kashmiris are indifferent to the discipline.

Thousands of government employees, schoolteachers and students from all over the region were brought in for the event, although rain forced Modi’s performance indoors.

Afterwards, he urged hundreds of people including many police and armed forces personnel on the shores of Dal Lake to make yoga “a part of their daily lives”.

“Yoga fosters strength, good health and wellness,” he said.

But one Srinagar resident saw the event as a cultural intrusion.

“This yoga is being imposed on our children to culturally change the next generations and control their minds,” they told AFP, declining to be identified for fear of reprisal.

    “It’s an imposition on us.”

Modi’s visit comes after a series of attacks, including one where nine people were killed and 33 injured when a bus carrying Hindu pilgrims plunged into a deep gorge after a suspected attack.

June 21 was declared International Yoga Day a decade ago and Modi has since led events at emblematic locations across India, and last year at the UN headquarters in New York.

Speculation over: Shatrughan Sinha welcomes Zaheer Iqbal with open arms

Veteran actor and politician Shatrughan Sinha subtly denied rumors of being upset about his daughter Sonakshi Sinha’s decision to marry her long-time beau Zaheer Iqbal. He was recently seen meeting his future son-in-law ahead of the big day.

On Thursday, Shatrughan Sinha ended all speculation of family tension around Sonakshi’s wedding. Paparazzi spotted him meeting the groom-to-be outside his apartment.

The two smiled and posed together for the cameras. Sinha even entertained the photographers by saying his iconic dialogue, “Khamosh!”. He then confirmed that he will attend his daughter’s wedding this weekend. He expressed happiness and support for her decisions, stating, “I will be there at the wedding, certainly. Why wouldn’t I? Her happiness is mine too, and vice versa. She has every right to choose her partner and plan her wedding,” as quoted by Indian media.

“I am very busy with my political work in Delhi. Despite this, being here in Mumbai shows that I am not just her support but also her protector,” Shatrughan affirmed.
