PM Shehbaz plans shutdown of loss-making govt institutions

Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif announced on Saturday that government institutions causing substantial financial losses will face closure in the coming months.

Addressing the nation, the Prime Minister cited the Pakistan Public Works Department as an example, labeling it a financial burden on the nation. “I have made the decision to shut down institutions that drain resources instead of contributing to our progress,” he stated, revealing the formation of a ministerial committee to oversee this process.

“I will return to you with further updates in the coming months,” PM Shehbaz affirmed, emphasizing the significance of these measures in reducing expenditure and conserving funds.

Highlighting recent diplomatic achievements, the Prime Minister referenced successful investment commitments secured during his visits to China and the Middle East. He began his address by addressing the situation in Palestine and the issue of Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

Reflecting on the political landscape, PM Shehbaz discussed the performance of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) post the removal of former Prime Minister Imran Khan through a vote of no-confidence in 2022.

Celebrating his government’s completion of 100 days in office, the Prime Minister underscored recent reductions in petrol and diesel prices announced on Friday. “We must foster an environment conducive to investment, business, and education for our talented youth,” he asserted.

PM Shehbaz stressed the importance of cultivating domestic investment before seeking foreign investments, envisioning Pakistan’s self-reliance and advancement ahead of its neighbors.

Regarding economic achievements, he pointed to the Pakistan Stock Exchange’s rise to 77,000 points as a testament to the positive reception of the government’s recently unveiled federal budget.

  • Khan’s court hearing audio not leaked from Supreme Court: CJP Isa

Khan’s court hearing audio not leaked from Supreme Court: CJP Isa

Earlier this week, an audio conversation of Chairman Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan and Supreme Court judges was leaked on social media. Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa clarified that it wasn’t leaked from the Supreme Court.

Justice Isa stated that he asked the IT staff who told him that there were some voices in the audio which did not belong to the top court.

The conversation was regarding the NAB amendment case’s court hearing in which Imran Khan appeared through video conference from Adiala Jail where he is currently imprisoned.

Interestingly, Justice Athar Minallah suggested that there was no issue even if the audio was leaked because the dialogues were made during an open court.

  • FBR imposes 18% GST on packaged food items to boost revenue

FBR imposes 18% GST on packaged food items to boost revenue

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has announced the imposition of an 18 per cent General Sales Tax (GST) on packaged food items, including formula milk.

The announcement was made during a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Finance, chaired by Senator Saleem Mandviwalla. Amjad Zubair, Chairman of the FBR, informed the committee that the GST will be applied to all packaged items sold at departmental stores and large retail outlets, but will not affect unpackaged food items sold at general stores.

In response to concerns raised during the meeting, the committee recommended a reduction in the GST rate on formula milk due to its critical importance for infant health. Chairman Zubair acknowledged the significant tax revenue generated from formula milk and expressed the government’s willingness to consider a reduction in tax rates if companies agree to lower their prices.

The committee also addressed the issue of unregistered outlets selling formula milk, recommending that these outlets be blacklisted to ensure compliance with tax regulations.

It is notable that this move aligns with a demand from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). During recent talks with Pakistani authorities for a new loan agreement, the IMF recommended increasing the general sales tax to 18 per cent.

The IMF mission observed that Pakistan’s current sales tax collection system faces challenges, with the federal government collecting tax on commodities and the provinces on services. The IMF suggested that sales tax collection should be centralized under the federal government and that GST exemptions be eliminated.

This development is part of broader efforts to streamline Pakistan’s tax system and enhance revenue collection as the country seeks financial assistance from international lenders.

Jin reunites with BTS after completing military service

Jin from BTS has finished required military service in South Korea, leaving the military base in Yeoncheon on Wednesday, June 12.

Wearing his military uniform, Jin was welcomed back by his bandmates J-Hope, Jimin, Jungkook, V, and RM, who played the saxophone to celebrate his return.

Later, BTS posted a photo on X (formerly Twitter) showing all six members together. Jin sat in the middle on a couch with decorations that said, “Jin Is Back.”

The group wrote “I’m home!” under the photo, which got more than one million likes on the platform.

Jin also did a livestream on Weverse for 19 minutes, where he talked with fans and thanked them for supporting him while he was away.

He posted a message thanking reporters and ARMY fans who came to see him after he finished military service. He said sorry for not being able to greet everyone properly because he was worried it would get too crowded.

In January, BTS put out a video on YouTube of Jin celebrating New Year’s with fans while he was still in the military.

“Ta-da everyone! Hello! Seok-jin came to say hi for the new year,” he said. “It’s January, everyone. The new year is here. I’m getting older in January. I’d be in my mid-30s now.”

“I miss you all. I miss you a lot,” Jin added. “Guys, please wait a few more months. Now that it’s the new year, we have a few months left. Make a lot of snowmen and think of me when you make them.”

BTS said they will come back together by 2025 after everyone finishes their military service.

  • Islamophobic residents protest allotment of flat to Muslim woman in India

Islamophobic residents protest allotment of flat to Muslim woman in India

Residents of a housing scheme built under the Gujarat government’s housing project have launched protests against the allotment of a flat to a Muslim woman in India, claiming that the locality is meant ‘only for Hindus’.

The protestors told local media that if the allotment was not revoked, they would intensify their agitation and hold protests in other cities, including the capital, New Delhi.

“Though I was given the house way back in 2018, there is no solution in sight. I currently live at another place with my son,” said the woman.

The extremist Hindu protestors believe that houses cannot be allotted to members of minority communities because it is a locality of Hindu inhabitants and falls under the Disturbed Areas Act that puts a ban on the sale of property by members of one religious community to those from another community without the prior approval of the District Collector.

“The protest by the residents have once again exposed the near-complete housing segregation in Gujarat where in a majority of places, Muslims don’t get any house for lease or for purchase,” highlighted the report by The Hindu.

  • Groups, weak captaincy, Babar should have played under Shaheen: Shahid Afridi

Groups, weak captaincy, Babar should have played under Shaheen: Shahid Afridi

Pakistan cricket team’s former captain Shahid Afridi slammed the national team’s skipper Babar Azam for not supporting Shaheen for captaincy.

Shahid Afridi, talking about the change in the captaincy of the team, said, “If Babar Azam took a stand for his players in the past and plays under the captaincy of Shaheen, then in the eyes of me and the world, Babar Azam’s honor would increase more.”

The former captain said, “Babar Azam should have told the board at that time that if you had made Shaheen the captain, it was a very wrong way to immediately remove him from the captaincy.”

Talking about ‘grouping in the team’ he said, “Due to the weakness of the captain, groups are formed in the team, and this grouping makes any captain weak and due to these issues, the respect of the captain in the team also decreases.”

“The formation of the group is the captain himself, because you blame every failure on the bowlers for not performing well in the match. I have never seen Babar criticising the batsmen. If the captain is strong then there will never be talk of such groupings.”

In December, last year, Babar Azam was removed from the captaincy of the Pakistan team after the poor performance of the Pakistan team in the World Cup hosted by India last year. Shan Masood was then given the Test while Shaheen Shah Afridi was given the captaincy of the T20 team.

The team under the captaincy of Shaheen played a series of five T20 matches against New Zealand in which the national team had to face a defeat of 1-4.

After this defeat, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) took the captaincy from Shaheen before the T20 World Cup and appointed Babar Azam as the T20 and ODI captain.
