Sudan facing ‘inferno’ of violence, crushing aid holdups: UN

Residents of conflict-hit Sudan are “trapped in an inferno of brutal violence” and increasingly at risk of famine due to the rainy season and blocked aid, the UN’s humanitarian coordinator for the country warned Wednesday.

Tens of thousands of people have died and millions have been displaced since war broke out in April 2023 between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

“Famine is closing in. Diseases are closing in. The fighting is closing in and there’s no end in sight,” Clementine Nkweta-Salami told a press conference.

The grim situation is only expected to worsen, with “just six weeks before the lean season sets in, when food becomes less available, and more expensive.”

Noting that more than four million people are facing potential famine, Nkweta-Salami added that the onset of the country’s rainy season means that “reaching people in need becomes even more difficult.”

The area’s planting season also “could fail if we aren’t able to procure and deliver seeds for farmers,” she said.

And “after more than a year of conflict, the people of Sudan are trapped in an inferno of brutal violence.”

“In short, the people of Sudan are in the path of a perfect storm that is growing more lethal by the day,” Nkweta-Salami warned, adding that the humanitarian community needs “unfettered access to reach people in need, wherever they are.”

The United Nations has expressed growing concern in recent days over reports of heavy fighting in densely populated areas as the RSF seeks control of El-Fasher, the last major city in the western Darfur region not under its control.

“Right now the humanitarian assistance they rely on can’t get through,” Nkweta-Salami said.

More than a dozen UN trucks loaded with medical equipment and food, which left Port Sudan on April 3, have still not reached El Fasher, she said, “due to insecurity and delays in getting clearances at checkpoints.”

Fan Zhei, a young woman of Pakistani descent adopted by a Chinese couple when they came to work in the country, is attracting attention for the contrast between her foreign looks and Chinese accent.

Fan, 20, has 750,000 followers on Chinese social website Douyin, and her videos are going viral.

    How was she adopted?

She was found abandoned in a cardboard box on the street in Pakistan by her adoptive parents when they were working in the country, according to South China Morning Post.

The couple brought her back to their hometown in a rural area of central China’s Henan province, and called her Fan Zihe, an auspicious name meaning “vigorous and long-lived”. She remains their only child.

Fan attracting attention due to her complexion

Fan first attracted attention on social media in 2021, when she posted a video of herself eating traditional Henan noodles while squatting in front of her house.

The contrast between her appearance and her native Henan dialect piqued the curiosity of many.

Fan’s content on social media includes activities of rural life– farming, eating noodles and asking for lucky money from the elderly members of the family.

Fan said her parents have always treated her as though she is their biological daughter and defended her whenever people said she looked different. She was nicknamed “little black girl”.

“Our daughter’s dark skin is beautiful and healthy,” they said.

Fan identifies as Chinese. She expresses gratitude to her parents for adopting her.

“People say loving a person is like growing a flower. I think the best gardeners are my parents,” Fan said.

She said she wants to buy them a flat in the city to repay them. She earns 4,000 yuan (US$550) a month from her Douyin account, more than Chinese farmers’ average salary, which was 1,678 yuan a month in 2022.

Sandeep Lamichhane gets clean chit in rape case

Nepali cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane has got a clean chit in a rape case, making him available to play for his country in the T20 World Cup 2024.

In September 2023, the Nepal Cricket Association suspended Lamichhane from the team after he was accused of raping an 18-year-old girl.

On January 2024, Sandeep was sentenced to eight years in prison, while a fine of Rs300,000 (three lacs) was also imposed on him. Subsequently, he challenged the court’s decision in the High Court, stressing that he was innocent.

Now a two-judge bench has overturned the Kathmandu District Court’s verdict that had sentenced the 23-year-old to eight years in prison, citing lack of evidence in the case. As he has now been declared innocent, he will be available for selection in Nepal’s squad for the T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA starting from June 1.

“Stop targeting the institutions, enough is enough. If there is any interference by institutions, then provide evidence, and we will stand together [against it],” said the former Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader during a press conference.

Vawda’s remarks came after he filed an application to ask the IHC registrar about revealing the exchange of a letter between former IHC chief justice Athar Minallah and IHC’s Justice Babar Sattar regarding Justice Sattar’s green card.

The senator wrote a letter, mentioning the social media campaigns against Justice Babar Sattar, accusing him of holding dual nationality and business interests in a private school in the country.

The former PTI leader stated that judges should be transparent and away from accusations.

Vawda stressed that the accusations made by the IHC judges kept mentioning the names of agencies repeatedly. “Give evidence, and we will stand beside you,” he added.

Faysal Qureshi reveals his favorite co-stars

During an appearance on Nida Yasir, Danish Nawaz, and Yasir Nawaz’s show, ‘Nadan Maizban,’ actor Faysal Qureshi shared which actors he wants to work with again. When asked who he thinks he has the best on-screen chemistry with, the Bashar Momin actor quickly said, “I always enjoy working with Naumaan Ijaz.” He also admitted, “I get intimidated acting opposite Naumaan.”

Talking about his female co-stars, Faysal said, “I enjoyed working with Zara Noor Abbas. I only did two scenes with her because she didn’t continue with that drama.” He added, “Madiha Imam joined the team, and I saw Zara’s acting. She was amazing. Madiha is also very good.”

Qureshi mentioned other talented actors he’s worked with. “I worked with Ushna Shah in Bashar Momin and Bheegi Palkain, and she was brilliant. Iqra Aziz is phenomenal. Sajal is excellent. Faryal Mehmood is also very good.”

During the same interview, Faysal said he enjoys comedies more than other genres. He explained, “Coincidentally, all three of my ongoing dramas have me playing a negative character. If I play too much of the same thing, I stop enjoying it. I think comedy feels like a paid vacation. Serious characters can be draining.”

Faysal also shared how he keeps his personal and acting life separate, especially after playing intense roles. He said, “By the time I go home, I’ve already forgotten the day’s dialogues and I don’t know the next day’s either. If we need to reshoot scenes, the set assistants remind me that we just shot the same scene yesterday, but I don’t remember. I still ask to read the script.”
