Court fines FIA, PTA, PEMRA Rs. 500,000 each

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday fined FIA, PTA, and PEMRA Rs500,000 each while also dismissing their petitions regarding Justice Babar Sattar’s recusal from the audio leaks case.

Last week, PEMRA filed a petition asking that Justice Babar recuse himself from hearing the case.

At least four departments filed the applications and said that petitions of Bushra Bibi, Imran Khan’s wife, and former CJP Saqib Nisar’s son Najamul Saqib should be placed before the same bench that had decided an identical matter in 2021.

Justice Sattar had been hearing the audio leaks case ever since it surfaced in 2023.

Now interestingly, the applications by the four departments came after a letter by six IHC judges, including Babar Sattar, was written to the Supreme Judicial Council alleging interference by spy agencies in judicial matters.

Separately, on April 28, a press release was published by the IHC condemning the “malicious campaign against Justice Babar Sattar” on social media.

Allegations of dual citizenship and Sattar’s mother’s business enterprises abound. However, the IHC wholly defended Justice Babar Sattar saying that “confidential information” of the judge has been posted on social media.

‘PM Shehbaz works 26 hours a day’ says Senator Irfan Siddiqui

During a talk show on Neo News, Senator Irfan Siddiqui of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) recounted an exchange where Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, when questioned about his work routine, quipped, “I operate on a 26-hour day.”

The senator was impressed with the dedication and work ethic of Prime Minister Shehbaz and when he asked the PM about an extra two hours a day then PM replied, “I sleep in those two hours”.

The senator then stated that given the work discipline of PM Shehbaz, it is logical that he depends on assistants.

People on social media have some things to say about the 26-hour day of Prime Minister Shehbaz.

  • Scotland’s first minister Yousaf quits after a year

Scotland’s first minister Yousaf quits after a year

Edinburgh, United Kingdom – Humza Yousaf announced his resignation as Scotland’s first minister on Monday, before he was due to face two confidence votes this week sparked by his ditching of junior coalition partners in a row over climate policy.

The 39-year-old quit following a turbulent year as head of the devolved administration, during which support for his pro-independence Scottish National Party (SNP) has fallen.

Yousaf had been facing growing calls to resign since unceremoniously ending the SNP’s power-sharing deal with the Scottish Greens in the Scottish parliament last week.

His government had earlier abandoned ambitious targets for the transition to net-zero carbon emissions, angering the Greens.

The opposition Scottish Conservatives then lodged a vote of no-confidence in Yousaf, which was due to be held as early as Wednesday and which the first minister was at risk of losing.

Scottish Labour also lodged another no-confidence vote in his government.

The Tories, Labour, Liberal Democrats and Greens had all said they would vote against him in the personal vote, forcing him to seek the backing of the sole lawmaker from the pro-independence Alba party.

Alba’s Ash Regan is a former SNP colleague of Yousaf who ran against him in the March 2023 leadership election to succeed Nicola Sturgeon as first minister.

Yousaf — the first Muslim leader of a major UK political party — said in a statement that he thought winning was “absolutely possible”.

But he added that he was “not willing to trade in my values or principles or do deals with whomever simply for retaining power”.

He added: “I have concluded that repairing our relationships across the political divide can only be done with someone else at the helm.”

    Divisions

Yousaf’s pro-independence SNP has 63 members in the 129-seat parliament — two short of a majority. The presiding officer has a casting vote.

Yousaf initially said he had no intention of quitting and intended to win the confidence votes.

But following his announcement, parliament now has 28 days to choose a new first minister.

He only became Scotland’s leader 13 months ago, after Sturgeon sensationally announced she was quitting, citing tiredness after eight years in charge.

Yousaf defeated Kate Forbes and Regan in a bruising contest that highlighted divisions in the party between those on the left wing and others closer to the right.

His leadership was quickly plunged into turmoil when Sturgeon was arrested with her husband, Peter Murrell, over claims of mismanagement of SNP finances.

Murrell was charged in the case earlier this month. Sturgeon has not been charged.

    Controversies

Sturgeon had been the figurehead of the Scottish independence movement.

She oversaw a surge in support for the SNP, particularly after Brexit — in which Scotland opposed leaving the European Union — and during the Covid pandemic.

But the SNP, which has run the Scottish government since 2007, has suffered a drop in popularity under Yousaf.

He also came under pressure over controversial new laws which made it an offence to stir up hatred against a number of groups, including transgender people.

The law has been heavily criticised, including most prominently by “Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling, who lives in Edinburgh.

Relations between the SNP and the Greens were also strained by the recent pause in prescribing puberty blockers in Scotland.

Some within the SNP wanted Yousaf to end the coalition with the Greens because they felt the deal was pulling the party further leftwards.

The SNP’s slump has also come in the context of a resurgent Labour party, which is tipped to win a UK general election due later this year.

Scotland voted against independence in a referendum in 2014, with 55 percent of electors choosing “No”.

The SNP has argued that the UK’s vote to leave the EU in 2016 had put separatism back on the table, because Scotland overwhelmingly voted to remain part of the bloc.

But the party, in power in Edinburgh for 17 years, has struggled to build momentum for another vote, and the independence movement is at arguably its lowest ebb in recent memory.

The Scottish Parliament, re-established in 1999, has limited powers to set policy in areas such as health, education, transport and the environment.

The UK government in London retains powers for countrywide issues such as defence and foreign policy.

  • French couple sentenced for keeping 159 cats, seven dogs

French couple sentenced for keeping 159 cats, seven dogs

A French couple has been given a one-year suspended sentence for keeping dozens of animals in closed spaces in a case pertaining to animal cruelty.

The couple occupied an 80 square meter (861 square foot) apartment with 159 cats and seven dogs, as per BBC.

The judge ruled that the couple had not given the animals proper care. The investigation found animals living in filth, many of them malnourished, dehydrated, or parasite-infected.

The owners are a 68-year-old woman and a 52-year-old man, both of whom were banned from owning pets. They were ordered to pay more than €150,000 (£128,000) to animal rights’ charities and civil parties.

When police broke up a fight at the couple’s apartment last year, they found each room contained numerous animals.

Authorities also reported animal waste everywhere in the apartment.

Due to their poor health, some dogs and cats later passed away. In a washroom, investigators discovered the bodies of two dogs and at least two cats.

The apartment’s owner testified in court that although the animals were “the love of her life,” she had “screwed up.”

It appears that in 2018, she moved in with her parents’ three dogs and three cats before bringing about thirty cats from an abandoned building to her apartment. After that, the animals procreated.

The woman claimed that she would have felt like an “abandoned person for abandoning [the animals].”

This condition is called Noah’s syndrome. It is a psychological need to save animals even when one is unable to do so, according to a psychiatric evaluation.

An 18-month prison sentence was what the prosecution had asked for.

In 2014, the couple was already under investigation for residing in an 18-square-meter studio with a dog and thirteen cats.

  • PCB proposes three cities for Champions Trophy hosting

PCB proposes three cities for Champions Trophy hosting

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has proposed the names of three cities to host International Cricket Council (ICC) for Champions Trophy 2025.

Among the cities recommended by PCB are Lahore, Karachi and Rawalpindi.

While addressing a press conference in Lahore on Sunday, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi said, “We have sent the schedule of Champions Trophy matches to ICC. The security team of ICC had come to Pakistan with whom we had a very good meeting, they had reviewed the arrangements regarding the matches in Pakistan. We will also share the plan for the upgradation of the stadiums with them soon.”

Mohsin Naqvi said, “We are in constant touch with the ICC and we are trying to ensure that we can improve the organization of the tournament in Pakistan.”

Talking about India’s participation in Champion Trophy, he said, “In discussing the schedule of the Champions Trophy, the matter related to India’s participation in this tournament will also be considered.”

According to ESPNCricinfo, the initial draft of the schedule includes all matches, including India’s matches in Pakistan. Usually when the host country sends the draft schedule to the ICC, the schedule is finalized after changes by the cricket boards of the participating teams.

The Champions Trophy will be held in Pakistan after 30 years, start from mid-February next year, for which the PCB has started upgrading its grounds.
