MDCAT top scorers called by FIA for mock exam

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has called multiple top scorers of the Medical and Dental College Admissions Test (MDCAT) to hold a mock exam as part of an investigation into examination paper leak.

Previously, on Oct 26, Sindh High Court (SHC) ordered a retake of the exam within a month in the province after the inquiry committee found out that the entire test procedure was compromised.

SHC also handed over the investigation to FIA, asking that it should be concluded within two months.

FIA’s Cyber Crime Circle officials in Karachi then issued call-up notices to several students, asking them to appear before the investigation team to answer their questions.

Dawn reports that two such notices were issued by Inspector Arfa Saeed to many female students in which she stated that she is conducting an investigation into the matter of paper leak that has “damaged the career of meritorious students of Sindh”.

A notice served to a top scorer said that she has obtained “194/200 marks or 97pc” in MDCAT 2024, which is “practically… not possible for any student to obtain such a highest marks.”

The inspector also alleged in the notice that it appeared that the student was “involved in leakage of MDCAT-2024” and, hence, “required to appear at FIA Cyber Crime Circle” in Karachi on Nov 1.

Therefore, the student was asked to bring her original computerised national identity card “to answer such questions as may be put to you or your mock exam maybe conducted in this office to examine the actual position”.

“A failure to comply with this legal notice may entail that you have nothing to say in your defence, and legal action based on available evidence on record shall be initiated against you,” warned the FIA notice served to the female students.

FIA confirmed to Dawn that the wording of the notices sent to the top-scoring students was identical and all of them were asked to appear before the agency on different dates to take a “mock exam” and to get their statements recorded under Section 160 of the criminal procedure code.

Notably, one of the points of the inquiry report submitted before the SHC also said that the distribution of marks obtained by candidates across Sindh lacked a pattern.

Dawn quotes, “A notably smaller percentage of students from Karachi (1.18 per cent) and Hyderabad (1.47pc) scored 187 or higher marks, while a significantly larger percentage of students from Tharparkar (7.92pc) and Sujawal (7.32pc) achieved the same score threshold. This disparity, where students from certain rural districts outperform those from highly urbanised areas in the MDCAT test, is difficult to explain.”

  • Firdous Jamal reveals why he has separated from his family

Firdous Jamal reveals why he has separated from his family

Veteran actor Firdous Jamal has talked about the reason for his solitary lifestyle and addressed rumors of divorce.

“Now I have become a grandfather, I have been married for 35 years; why would I divorce my wife at this age? All this news is just rumors, there is no truth in them, and I don’t know why my son (Hamza Firdous) has said this,” the actor said, denying that his 35-year-long marriage has ended.

When asked about living separately, he responded, “It’s also incorrect for my son to say that I left my comfortable home to live alone in a rundown rented house just to gain sympathy from people.”

He explained that he does not like to be a burden on anyone and thus lives alone. “The house I live in is rented, but I also have my own house, which I built myself with the help of my sons.”

He explained that his family resides peacefully in the house he owns, but he prefers solitude, stating, “I like solitude so that I can immerse myself in my characters. This solitude wasn’t possible while living with family, so I chose to live separately.”

He further said, “I don’t like to be a burden on anyone, so how could I be a burden on my sons at this age? While I completed my education on my own, I have a good relationship with my family. I just don’t want to be a burden on anyone, so I am living alone.”

Firdous Jamal’s wife had reportedly initiated the process of divorcing him after 35 years of marriage, their son Hamza Firdous had confirmed while reacting to a recent interview about his father leaving the family after cancer diagnosis.

“I was very sad while making this video and I wish I didn’t have to make this video. But when a person starts getting punished for the sins he has committed, if you don’t do it, you have to talk.”

He added, “First of all, I want to tell everyone on behalf of my mother that she has divorced my father.”

He continued, “No woman wants to get divorced after 35 years of marriage and my mother only stayed in a complicated relationship with my father for so many years hoping that one day everything would be fine but nothing got better.”

Hamza Firdous pointed out his father’s mistakes and said, “My father had many bad habits which were painful for our family and we also talked about it with my father’s brothers but still my father admitted his mistakes.”

Talking about Firdous Jamal’s cancer treatment, he said “When father got cancer, it was a very painful time for us and we got him fully treated. I should not mention this because it was our duty to treat father if he was sick, but since the videos of father’s interviews are giving the impression that his children….is that why I have to give the details?”

He further said, “One son sent money for my father’s treatment, the other took care of him in the hospital and the daughter fed him with her own hands even when he was sick.”

He added, “During the treatment, the doctor showed a wound on my father’s body, so he fainted after seeing my father’s wound because he did not want to see my father in such a condition.”

He finally said, “How can such sensitive children leave their father alone in illness?”

A few days ago Firdous Jamal said in an interview about living alone after suffering from cancer, “I have spent my whole life in a lot of noise and turmoil but now I want to live in peace, that’s all. I live alone.”

He also said, “I stayed with my family as long as I was healthy, but after I fell ill, I decided to separate from my wife and children because I did not want to hurt them.”

He called his marriage the biggest regret of his life and said, “I got married to the wrong person at the wrong time.”

  • American woman charged for pepper spraying Muslim Uber driver

American woman charged for pepper spraying Muslim Uber driver

A video of a New York woman repeatedly pepper sprayed her Muslim Uber driver praying inside the car has emerged online. The attack occured on July 31, however, the woman has been indicted with perpetuating a hate crime, as per a recent press release by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.

Jennifer Guilbeault, 23, was indicted on multiple hate crime charges on October 28 for pepper-spraying a 45-year-old Muslim Uber driver, Shohel Mahmud, as he began praying in Arabic at a red light.

Court documents reveal that Jennifer was seen lunging forward towards the driver’s seat and spraying his face with pepper spray, inflicting pain and burning sensations, just after Shohel Mahmud started praying.

The driver subsequently called the police, and the woman was arrested.

She has now been formally charged by the local Court and is set to return for a court appearance in January.

CNN quotes Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, who said, “As alleged, Jennifer Guilbeault senselessly assaulted a Muslim Uber driver while he was just doing his job. The victim is a hardworking New Yorker who should not have to face this type of hate because of his identity. Everyone is welcome to live and work in Manhattan.”

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (Cair) also welcomed the indication.

“We welcome the hate crime charges in this case and thank law enforcement authorities for sending a clear message that those who allegedly carry out bias-motivated attacks will face the consequences,” said Afaf Nasher, the Cair-NY executive director in a statement cited by The Guardian.

  • Was Senator Faisal Saleem Rahman’s abduction orchestrated by his own party?

Was Senator Faisal Saleem Rahman’s abduction orchestrated by his own party?

Veteran journalist Mohammad Malick has disclosed details of the disappearance of Senator Faisal Saleem Rahman prior to the passing of the 26th Constitutional Amendment.

After the sudden disappearance of Senator Faisal Saleem Rehman on October 16, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) social media team vehemently criticised him, alleging that the Senator was not kidnapped but in self-hiding, leading to some social media members calling him a “traitor.”

However, contrary to PTI’s social media team,s narrative, Mohammad Malick has disclosed the other side of the story.

In his talk show KHABAR, the journalist claimed that after the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, which concluded on October 16 in Islamabad, Senator Faisal Saleem Rahman was abducted not by security agencies but by a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) bigwig leader.

One of the following four PTI leaders, including Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Ali Amin Gandapur, Opposition Leader of the National Assembly Omar Ayub Khan, former Speaker NA Asad Qaiser, and leader of opposition in Senate Shibli Faraz, was involved in the kidnapping of Senator Faisal Saleem Rahman, Malick has alleged.

“Senator Rahman was in Islamabad; he was directed to reach Peshawar by one of the PTI leaders in a phone call. When Rehman was on his way to Peshawar, he got kidnapped before arriving at KP capital. One PTI leader was in constant contact with Senator Faisal Saleem Rahman and was repeatedly asking for his location.”

“I have seen those messages, telephone calls, track records,” Muhammad Malick concluded.

The ruling coalition had lacked the requisite numbers to pass the 26th Constitutional Amendment from parliament. However, it was speculated that Senator Faisal Saleem Rahman might vote in favour of the constitutional amendment against his party’s decision.

Prominent journalist Azaz Syed, while speaking on the YouTube channel Talk SHOCK, had claimed that there is a possibility that Senator Faisal Saleem Rahman could vote for the constitutional amendment.

However, after the Senate passed the constitutional amendment, the ruling coalition claimed that no opposition party senator had voted for the 26th Constitutional Amendment.

We finally know why Sharjeena’s father didn’t accept Mustafa

Megahit drama serial Kabhi Main Kabhi Tum has launched many online conversations about the complex relationships it revolves around. Sharjeena and her father’s bond is one of them.

Television host and actor Tauseeq Haider, portraying Sharjeena father, recently talked about his character in an interview with Fuchsia Magazine.

When asked by host Rabia Mughni, “What drives your character to accept Mustafa,” Haider replied, “I believe there is intense love for his daughters, especially for the eldest one, but he doesn’t see anything else.”

He said that this particular aspect has received much praise for the character, but there’s also a message in it:
“While love for children is essential, there comes a point where you need to accept changes in their lives.”

Despite his character’s overprotectiveness, Tauseeq pointed out the irony in the narrative, saying, “My daughter (Heera) is strong like a diamond, and our upbringing has prepared her well.”

The Kabhi Main Kabhi Tum actor shared a story about his niece in Turkey who recognized the show even though she didn’t speak the language.

“In Nepal, Mauritius, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, wherever Urdu is spoken and understood, even my niece went to Turkey, and there was a Turkish colleague of hers who couldn’t even speak English properly. Her colleague said that they are in love with Kabhi Main Kabhi Tum,” Haider added.

Tauseeq shared a recent personal experience that brought him joy.
He said, “I was coming from Islamabad to Karachi on a flight recently, so, when I entered the plane, the cabin crew lady welcomed me excitedly and said, ‘I want to take a selfie with you right now.’ I said, ‘Sure, go ahead.’ Now, I went and sat down, and after a little while, when it was time for takeoff, about half an hour later, when the food trolley came, she was about to serve me the meal. She hesitated and said, ‘My heart isn’t in it to serve you food.’”

The drama stars Javed Sheikh, Naeema Butt, Emmad Irfani, Maya Khan, Bushra Ansari, and Tauseeq Haider.
Kabhi Main Kabhi Tum is written by Farhat Ishtiaq and directed by Badar Mehmood.

The options were cinema screening or public screening.

  • Pakistan air quality experts dismiss Punjab govt’s smog plan as ‘insufficient’

Pakistan air quality experts dismiss Punjab govt’s smog plan as ‘insufficient’

Pakistan Air Quality Experts Group (PAQx) has issued a collective statement on the Punjab government’s “Smog Mitigation Plan”, criticising the measures taken by the provincial government as “lacking to deal with the scale of the challenge”.

The provincial government has been on toes with Lahore continuing to rank as the most polluted city in the world. The government has so far changed school timings. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has pledged to initiate smog diplomacy with India, and most recently, a green lockdown has been imposed in the provincial capital.

Amid all this, the statement by PAQx, which includes all leading air quality experts, researchers, doctors and scientists, is of paramount importance as journalist Benazir Shah, while sharing the statement, also pointed out that “the newly formed government committee on air quality lacks representation from public health experts”.

“Most of Punjab and even Peshawar experience high pollution levels, yet the Punjab Mitigation Plan focuses only on Lahore,” she said while quoting the group’s statement that came from Lahore, Islamabad and Karachi chapters of the organisation.

“Punjab continues to suffer from extremely high pollution, as with previous year, which is deeply impacting the health of the residents of the region,” the statement added.

Group member Ahmed Rafay Alam, who is an environmental lawyer, stated that the “plan is largely a reproduction of the ‘short/immediate’ actions in the Punjab Clean Air plan (2023)”.

Another expert, Dr Imran Khalid, highlighted a discrepancy in the plan. “While it mentions Punjab on the cover, its contents are titled as ‘Smog Mitigation Plan for Lahore’.”

The statement further said that the mitigation plan cites a much-criticised emission inventory, focusing on carbon monoxide as a major pollutant rather than PM 2.5 emissions, which is “misleading.”

Respiratory health expert Dr Saima Saeed emphasised that the plan lacked guidelines for “the vulnerable groups whose health is more at risk” as Punjab reported over 400 deaths due to pneumonia last year.

Additionally, the group highlighted that environmental and climate policymaking could be implemented by ensuring participation from all sectors and ensuring transparency.

“With the new article 9A of the constitution in place, it is doubly important to consider the impact on people’s health and ensure that citizens are provided the opportunity to review policies that will impact their health,” it declared.

Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has imposed a “green lockdown” in Lahore, under which restrictions will be imposed on identified smog hotspots.

Key areas affected by the lockdown include Davis Road, Egerton Road, Durand Road, and Kashmir Road. Additionally, Shimla Pahari to Gulshan Cinema, Abbott Road, and Empress Road have also been declared as high-pollution zones.

Queen Mary Road and its surrounding areas are similarly marked as affected zones.

  • What are the terms of alleged ‘deal’ for Bushra Bibi’s release? Ansar Abbasi reveals details

What are the terms of alleged ‘deal’ for Bushra Bibi’s release? Ansar Abbasi reveals details

After Imran Khan’s spouse Bushra Bibi was released from Adiala Jail last week, social media is abuzz about an alleged deal between the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the establishment, a claim that the party consistently denies.

Journalist Ansar Abbasi, in his latest column, wrote that if the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Ali Amin Gandapur “is telling his colleagues and party leaders that he has played a role in getting Bushra Bibi released from jail,” then questions will naturally arise.

Abbasi also stated that after speaking to Gandapur about the possibility of any alleged deal, the CM “avoided the topic.”

However, KP government spokesperson Barrister Saif confirmed to Abbasi that Gandapur had indeed discussed his role in Bushra Bibi’s release.

According to Ansar, PTI’s style and politics in the coming days will reveal whether the alleged deal was really struck for getting Khan’s spouse released.

“Last week, I was told by the establishment that Bushra Bibi would not be re-arrested if the Islamabad High Court decided to release her on bail. A senior PTI leader also told me that Gandapur was told earlier that Bushra Bibi would not be re-arrested if she was granted bail by the courts,” revealed the senior journalist.

According to Ansar, no concrete evidence exists of any deal; however, he also wrote about the nature of a possible deal, if any.

“When I asked Gandapur Sahib yesterday whether Tehreek-e-Insaf will continue to target the army and the army chief, his answer was that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf is neither against the institution nor against any individual,” wrote Abbasi.

According to Abbasi’s analysis, “It could be that Tehreek-e-Insaaf will not directly criticize the Army Chief and the economy of Pakistan.”

Ansar stated that this will be revealed in the coming days because if PTI doesn’t criticise the Army or the economy, then it would mean that the PTI “has made a fundamental change in its policy which aims to avoid a direct fight with the army.”

If the party continues its policy of targeting the military or the COAS like the last two years, then it would mean there is no deal, according to Asar Abbasi.

Ansar wrote, “It is a known fact that the economy is the government’s as well as Army Chief’s first priority, and that is why the condition of not politicizing the economy would be put for Bushra Bibi’s release.”

Camera Specification: Some opponents provide comparable multi-lens setups, but having the 16MP selfie camera of the Oppo A54 in this segment is excellent.

Brand Recognition: The after-sales service provided by Oppo in Pakistan has been outstanding, which may interest a few customers looking for solid after-sales service.

Is the Oppo A54 Still Worth Buying in Pakistan?

The Oppo A54 remains a capable budget smartphone in the segment thanks to its performance, camera, and battery life. Due to the low-tier processor, the smartphone might only be the perfect match for some power users or casual gamers. However, it would be entirely satisfactory to people looking for a low-cost device with a long battery life. The Oppo A54 affordable option, even in 224 for the price, would be carrying the smartphone users looking forward to carrying out unchallenging tasks.

    Final Thoughts

Users will still be able to appreciate the affordability that the Oppo A54 offers within the Pakistani markets. Its impressive battery, sensible camera performance, and ease of use controls are great for affordable daily smartphone users. However, if you require processing power or higher resolution displays, try looking around the pricey segments. Looking at its functional aspects and relatively low Cost, the Oppo A54 is expected to be a good fit for several Pakistanis in 2024.

  • Punjab govt announces green lockdown in Lahore to tackle smog

Punjab govt announces green lockdown in Lahore to tackle smog

The Punjab government has imposed a “green lockdown” in Lahore, under which restrictions will be imposed on identified smog hotspots.

The restrictions in designated areas will include barring barbecue joints and marriage halls from operating, while motorcycles and rickshaws will be prohibited.

The government made the announcement in light of increasing pollution levels in the provincial capital, which continues to rank at the top of the world’s worst air quality index.

Senior provincial minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, speaking in the Punjab Assembly, announced that 11 areas in Lahore have been identified as smog hotspots, with the Shimla Pahari area being the most affected.

She affirmed that the “green lockdown” would be imposed starting Thursday (today).

The director general of the Punjab Environmental Protection Agency, Dr Imran Hamid Sheikh, issued the green lockdown notification.

    Smog hotspots

Dawn reports that smog hotspots include major roads of the city such as Davis Road, Egerton Road, Durand Road, Kashmir Road, Abbott Road, starting from Shimla Hill to Gulistan Cinema, Empress Road, starting from Shimla Hill to Railway Headquarters, and Queen Mary Road, starting from Durand Road to Allama Iqbal Road.

    Details of green lockdown

The details of the green lockdown delineate that all construction activities within a one-kilometre radius of Shimla Hill are totally banned. Besides this, the use of commercial generators, Qingqi motorcycle rickshaws and barbecue activities are restricted after 8 pm.

Food points using charcoal, coal or wood without a proper system of controlling carbon emissions are required to stop functioning right away.

The Punjab government has directed marquees and marriage halls to close by 10 pm.

Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) is ordered to conduct wept sweeping to reduce dust in the environment.

To tackle the traffic jams on roads, encroachments will be removed.

Moreover, half of office employees at workplaces are informed that they can work from home.

    Green Ring

Marriyum Aurangzeb revealed that the government is planning to establish a “green ring” around the provincial capital using modern technology as part of the Lahore Green Master Plan.

This will create a “wall of trees” to reduce emissions and increase oxygen levels.

She further said every tree would be geo-tagged. To increase the number of trees in industrial areas, the Punjab government will collaborate with industries to expand tree plantations.

The educational institutions and students will be encouraged to participate in “Green Force” during the smog season.

    Crackdown on environmental violations

In light of the government’s crackdown on environmental violations, two factories were sealed, and fines of Rs 200,000 were imposed, a senior minister told the Punjab Assembly.

Furthermore, three brick kilns and four plastic melting plants were demolished, and several food outlets in the Model Town area were sealed due to excessive pollutant emissions.

Sand-carrying trolleys are advised to use covers now to reduce dust on the roads. 296 vehicles have been fined, a total amount of Rs592,000, and 102 cars were taken into police custody.

    Electric buses

The Punjab government has also decided to introduce 30 electric buses and e-bikes in Lahore to control the pollution further.

Punjab Safe Cities Authority is also directed to issue daily e-challans to vehicles emitting smoke and strict action against individuals involved in the burning of waste.

Previously, Chief Minister (CM) Punjab Maryam Nawaz spoke at a Diwali ceremony earlier today, during which she hinted at writing a letter to the Chief Minister of Indian Punjab on the issue of smog.

In today’s fast-paced world, families need more from their vehicles than just transportation. They require a blend of comfort, safety, and affordability, all wrapped in a reliable package. Enter the Suzuki Every—a car designed with the modern family in mind. As Suzuki continues to set new standards in Pakistan’s automotive market, the Suzuki Every emerges as an ideal choice for families who seek a vehicle that meets both practical and emotional needs.

    Comfort Tailored to Family Needs

When it comes to family vehicles, comfort plays a pivotal role, and the Suzuki Every doesn’t disappoint. Gone are the days when driving was purely about getting from point A to point B. Families today crave a smooth, stress-free experience, and the Every is designed to deliver just that. It’s equipped with air conditioning and power steering, features that come as a welcome relief, especially on long, hot drives or through congested city streets.

Airbags provide essential protection in the event of a collision, cushioning passengers from the impact and reducing the risk of serious injury. Meanwhile, the ABS with EBD ensures that your braking is not only effective but also evenly distributed, preventing wheels from locking up during sudden stops. This feature is especially useful on wet or uneven roads, where maintaining control is crucial. The Suzuki Every is designed with this in mind, offering a 660cc engine that excels in fuel efficiency. Whether you’re navigating daily commutes or embarking on weekend trips, the Every helps you save on fuel without sacrificing performance.

Backed by a 3-year/60,000 KM warranty, this car is built to last. Families can rest easy knowing they won’t face frequent breakdowns or unexpected repairs. The Every’s combination of affordability, fuel efficiency, and Suzuki’s trusted reliability makes it a car that delivers value far beyond its price tag.

More than Just a Vehicle—A Companion for Families

The Suzuki Every isn’t just a car; it’s a companion that fits seamlessly into every stage of family life. From the daily school runs and grocery shopping to weekend getaways and spontaneous road trips, the Every offers the versatility families need. The car’s modern features and user-friendly design make it accessible and practical, while its spaciousness and comfort ensure that every ride is an enjoyable experience.

But what truly sets the Every apart is its balance. It combines the latest in safety and comfort with affordability, making it a rare find in today’s automotive market. Whether you’re a growing family looking for your first car or a seasoned family seeking an upgrade, the Suzuki Every delivers on all fronts.
