NAB clears Nawaz Sharif in Toshakhana reference

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has cleared Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif of any wrongdoing in the Toshakhana vehicle reference.

The anti-graft body has requested the accountability court to clear the former prime minister of any charges. The court directed NAB to include PML-N leaders in the investigation.

The court may acquit Nawaz Sharif from the Toshakhana reference, as the watchdog stated in its report submitted before the court today, highlighting that the car in question was not a part of the Toshakhana at the time of purchase by the former prime minister.

The anti-corruption body found that the Saudi government gave a car to then-Prime Minister Nawaz in 1997, which he deposited in Toshakhana.

The report stated that in 2008, then prime minister Yousaf Raza Gillani offered Nawaz Sharif to buy the same car.

Therefore, the PML-N head didn’t buy the car from Toshakhana. Instead, he bought it from the federal transport pool. According to the NAB report, Nawaz Sharif didn’t use a fake account to buy a car.

Fiza Ali criticizes Adnan Siddiqui for fly comment as KRQ supports him

Actor Adnan Siddiqui faced a lot of criticism after making a comment comparing women to house flies on TV. He said it was just a joke, but people didn’t like it. TV host Fiza Ali even talked about it on her morning show, criticizing the veteran actor.

Fiza started by saying, “As a woman, I feel upset. Adnan Siddiqui, you called women flies. You’re famous, so you need to be careful about what you say.”

Fiza reminded Adnan of the risks of making such a statement, even as a joke. “You have made these comments about women, but remember, you have women in your life. Do you view your mother as a fly? Your sister? Your daughter? If she goes out in the world to study, and some other guy says she is just like a fly, how would that make you feel? Would you like it,” she asked.
“You should have thought before speaking. You need to say sorry. You owe it to all women. Just upload a video apologizing. It will make people respect you.” And to make herself clear, Fiza ended by saying, “Women are NOT flies.”

While fans agreed with Fiza in the comments, some other celebrities saw Adnan’s comments differently. Controversial screenwriter and director Khalilur Rehman Qamar defended Adnan during an Eid show.

“He’s a good man,” said KRQ when asked about it. “I know him. He’s a friend. He respects women a lot. Sometimes when you’re trying to say something, you might end up saying the wrong thing.”

To explain, KRQ called Adnan during the show and asked about the comment. Adnan clarified, “I was on Nida’s show, and a fly kept bothering me. I wasn’t comparing women to flies. I just used the fly to say that when you chase women, they might avoid you.”

Both men agreed that Adnan’s comments were just a joke. Adnan criticized today’s society, saying, “You can’t speak plainly anymore. If you call someone black, deaf, or fat, people criticize you. Even though I’m Pathan, I can’t play a Pathan role without people thinking I’m making fun of all Pathans.”
    “Agreed, agreed,” concurred KRQ.

A little while later, KRQ shared his thoughts on the topic. He said, “A joke is supposed to make people laugh, nothing more.” With Adnan’s comment spreading quickly, it’s uncertain how much longer people will keep talking about it.

  • Interior Ministry ordered banning of Twitter in Pakistan

Interior Ministry ordered banning of Twitter in Pakistan

The Ministry of Interior, headed by Mohsin Naqvi, has accepted that it directed Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to ban X, formerly Twitter. The Ministry revealed this information in a reply to the Islamabad High Court (IHC), after the court had asked why the social media platform had been shutdown.

In its reply to the IHC, the Ministry quoted the controversial 2021 social media rules stating that Twitter had not registered itself in Pakistan nor signed any MoU with the government of Pakistan.

The reply to IHC said, “As a foreign entity operating in Pakistan, Twitter/X is subject to the regulatory framework of the country, including the compliance with legal directives issued by the Government of Pakistan.”

It further said, “The ban on Twitter/X serves as a necessary step to address this regulatory vacuum and compel the platform to respect the sovereignty and legal jurisdiction of Pakistan.”

The Ministry’s reply also said that the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has forwarded numerous requests to Twitter/X through PTA to block those accounts involved in a defamatory campaign against CJP Qazi Faez Isa and criticized the lack of cooperation from Twitter/X.

It also mentioned that TikTok was also banned for a while by Pakistan, after which the company signed an MoU to abide by local laws, address content moderation issues, and enhance cooperation with Pak authorities.

Meanwhile, the Sindh High Court (SHC) also directed the Ministry of Interior to revoke its letter regarding the suspension of X within one week.

“What are you [interior ministry] achieving via shutting down trivial things […] The world must laugh at us,” said SHC Chief Justice Aqeel Ahmed Abbasi.

As of now, X/Twitter has been inaccessible in Pakistan for the last two months.

  • X blocks India election posts after takedown orders

X blocks India election posts after takedown orders

Social media platform X has blocked several posts in India containing political speech after authorities ordered their takedown ahead of a six-week general election that starts Friday.

X, owned by Tesla boss Elon Musk and formerly known as Twitter, said the posts would be withheld from Indian audiences until the election was over despite its disagreement with the order.

“In compliance with the orders, we have withheld these posts for the remainder of the election period,” X said in a statement posted to the platform late Tuesday.

“However, we disagree with these actions and maintain that freedom of expression should extend to these posts and political speech in general.”

The posts by elected politicians, political parties and candidates made unverified claims about the private lives of their opponents, which India’s election commission said violated its code of conduct.

The platform’s announcement of its compliance with the order came the same day X’s Brazilian office said it would abide by a court direction to block disinformation-spreading users in that country.

Musk had earlier threated to disregard the Brazilian court’s order.

The billionaire is expected to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi in India this month to discuss major investment plans in the country.

India, the world’s biggest democracy, regularly ranks among the top five countries globally for number of requests made by a government to remove social media content.

Last year, an Indian court hit X with a $61,000 fine after the platform unsuccessfully challenged orders to remove tweets and accounts critical of Modi’s government.

Rights groups say freedom of expression is under threat in India, which has fallen 21 spots to 161 out of 180 countries in the World Press Freedom Index since Modi took office in 2014.

Indian authorities have regularly imposed blanket internet shutdowns during periods of unrest.

That includes a months-long outage in the northeastern state of Manipur last year in the wake of ethnic violence.

The government says internet cuts curb disinformation by stemming rumours from spreading on social media or mobile messaging applications.

A total of 968 million people are eligible to cast a ballot in the election, with the final round of voting on June 1 and counting three days later.

  • Selection committee picked weak team with big names: Muhammad Hafeez

Former cricket captain and director Muhammad Hafeez has lashed out at the selection committee, alleging that they chose a weak team with big names.

Talking to Express News, Hafeez criticized the current selection committee and said, “The selection committee has tried to strengthen the team by calling the players sitting at home.”

Talking about Babar Azam’s captaincy he said, “Babar was removed from the captaincy for some reason but then made captain again. When Babar was the captain, he was accused of favoring every group.”

He said, “Shaheen Shah Afridi was removed from the captaincy within two months without any solid reason. I brought a four-year plan to improve the team, but I was removed from the post after two months.”

Muhammad Hafeez and former chairman PCB Ramiz Raja criticised Muhammad Amir’s return to the national team on several occasions, while selection committee member Wahab Riaz also termed the former cricketer’s statement as his personal opinion.

Pakistan Army will take action against ‘malicious’ propaganda targeting military

During the 264th Corps Commanders’ Conference, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir expressed concern about malicious propaganda against armed forces on social media.

He promised to take strong action against anyone trying to divide the nation and the security forces by making false accusations. The forum honoured the brave sacrifices of martyrs, including officers, soldiers, and citizens who gave their lives for peace and stability in the country, along with law enforcement agencies.

“Unfounded and baseless allegations against law enforcement agencies and security forces have become a fashion and are part of the larger design to drive a wedge between the people and the Armed Forces of Pakistan,” the forum noted.

“We will not allow such efforts to succeed, and as per the law and constitution, stern action will be ensured,” the forum vowed.

General Asim Munir showed commitment to fully support the government on economic and social progress. He also promised to help the government  tackle illegal activities like smuggling, hoarding, and electricity theft, as well as ensure the safe return of all illegal foreigners.

The Army chief also praised army officers and law enforcement agencies for their efforts in stopping terrorist attacks and eliminating multiple terrorists during ongoing counterterrorism operations.

  • US says new sanctions on Iran coming soon

US says new sanctions on Iran coming soon

The United States said Tuesday it would soon impose new sanctions on Iran’s missile and drone program after its retaliatory attack on Israel, and that it expects its allies and partners to follow with parallel measures.

US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan’s announcement came after Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen indicated punitive measures were in the works, and European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said his office was working on it.

Iran sent more than 300 missiles, drones and rockets at Israel over the weekend, in what it said was retaliation for a deadly strike on Tehran’s consulate in Damascus. Nearly all of the projectiles were intercepted, and there was little damage.

“In the coming days, the United States will impose new sanctions targeting Iran, including its missile and drone program” as well as the Revolutionary Guards and the Iranian defense ministry, Sullivan said in a statement.

“We anticipate that our allies and partners will soon be following with their own sanctions,” he added.

“These new sanctions and other measures will continue a steady drumbeat of pressure to contain and degrade Iran’s military capacity and effectiveness and confront the full range of its problematic behaviors.”

US authorities have been using economic tools to counter Iran’s activities, taking aim at its drone and missile programs, as well as its financing of groups like Hamas, which launched its own attack on Israel on October 7.

Earlier, Yellen previewed the sanctions, telling reporters: “Iran’s actions threaten the region’s stability and could cause economic spillovers.”

The Treasury will not hesitate to work with US allies to “use our sanctions authority to continue disrupting the Iranian regime’s malign and destabilizing activity,” she said.

She added that “all options to disrupt terrorist financing” will be on the table.

    ‘More that we could do’

Months of Israeli genocide in Gaza have triggered violence in the region involving Iranian proxies and allies who say they are acting in support of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

But tensions have soared even higher with Tehran’s first direct assault on Israel, which has prompted appeals for de-escalation by world leaders fearing wider conflict.

Yellen did not offer specifics on the possible measures to be taken, but said Washington has been working to diminish Iran’s ability to export oil, adding there might be “more that we could do.”

The United States is also looking to work with G7 partners and countries including China to constrain Iran’s ability to access goods needed to build weapons, a senior Treasury official told reporters.

“We’re going to have conversations with all major suppliers around the world,” the official said.

In Brussels, Borrell said after an emergency meeting of EU foreign ministers that some member states had proposed “the adoption of expanded restrictive measures against Iran” and that his office would begin preparatory work.

“We have to move away from the edge of the abyss,” Borrell said.

Sullivan said that Washington had sanctioned more than 600 Iran-linked individuals and entities “connected to terrorism, terrorist financing and other forms of illicit trade, horrific human rights abuses, and support for proxy terrorist groups.”

“The pressure will continue,” he warned.

“We will not hesitate to continue to take action, in coordination with allies and partners around the world, and with Congress, to hold the Iranian government accountable for its malicious and destabilizing actions.”
