Maryam puts women first in first speech as Chief Minister

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Maryam Nawaz on Monday was elected as Punjab’s chief minister amid a boycott by the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) of the polls.

Maryam, who has become the first-ever female chief minister in Pakistan’s history, won the election after receiving the backing of 220 MPAs in the provincial assembly.

After announcing the result, the speaker invited CM-elect Maryam Nawaz to come to the seat of the leader of the House.
She started her speech by congratulating the newly-elected speaker and deputy speaker.

“I wanted the opposition to be present in this democratic process,” said Maryam, extending an olive branch to the opposition in her maiden speech. She also thanked her party lawmakers, allied parties Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Istehkam-e-Pakistan (IPP) members for voting in her favour.

“This is the honour of every mother, sister and daughter that a woman has been elected as the CM and I pray that the process continues and more women take my place as the leader of the house,” she expressed.

“I neither have a feeling of revenge or vengeance and my journey includes my arrest, my father’s arrest, my mother’s passing away,” she said.

The Punjab CM-elect further thanked the opposition for making her “pass through” all the “ordeal” which helped her reach in the province’s top office.

“On this occasion, I thank my late mother too as she knowingly and unknowingly trained me for this day. She is still present with me, her prayers and best wishes. She taught me how to face trials,” said Maryam.

“I am thankful that you have made me occupy the seat from where a visionary leader like Nawaz started his career [and] who later made Pakistan invincible with nuclear technology,” said the newly-elected chief minister.

She said that the senior PML-N leaders including Nawaz and Shehbaz Sharif were her mentors. “I consider this office as a big responsibility on my shoulders,” she added.

She also hoped to rise above the political polarisation to serve Punjab, assuring that she will resolve the issues of her opponents’ constituencies regardless of their party affiliation.

In her victory speech, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz paid tribute to her father who, she said, “handheld” her from the general elections till the position she was in today.

“From the day I was nominated as Punjab CM, Nawaz Sharif chalked out a five-year plan for the province and gave me valuable advice every day,” she said.

“I want to take this moment and tell the youth that you should respect your parents […] because the prayer of our parents takes us to the position where we never envisioned to be,” Maryam added.

She also vowed to take forward the legacy of the PML-N.

“I was born in an affluent household but the difficulties I have faced, I got a chance to hold direct interaction with the common people and I am aware of their problems […] I know the expectations they have from the government.

“Therefore, from today onwards, after the oath, I will go to my office and begin the implementation of my manifesto,” she said.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced a Ramazan relief package, Nigheban, for the province.

She said it includes essentials worth Rs6.5 million – Rs7 million which would be distributed to the public in packages during Ramazan. “The package will be delivered to their doorstep.”

Maryam added that market places providing essential items at subsidised rates will also be set up.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has said that she has plans to transform Punjab into an “economic hub” by creating an enabling environment for businessmen.

In her victory speech, she said the government’s job was to create policies rather than conduct business, adding that she had plans to enhance public-private partnership.

She added that “incentives were necessary” for the private sector in order to foster economic stability.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has said that free medicines will be provided at every government hospital across the province from today onwards.

She also vowed to build one state-of-the-art hospital in every city of Punjab, which will include specialised departments.

Maryam also stated that Punjab’s first air ambulance will be announced within the next 12 weeks to improve healthcare for the people living in mountainous and hilly areas.

She said that a afety of women in the province was her first priority. “Therefore, I am announcing a dedicated helpline for women,” she said.

She said women would also be provided proper facilities, including separate washrooms and daycare centres, at workplaces.

“Harassing any woman is Maryam Nawaz’s red line,” she affirmed.

CM Maryam also lauded Gulber Circle ASP Shehr Bano for protecting the life of a teenage girl wearing a dress with Arabic calligraphy printed on it from an attack by a charged mob in Lahore yesterday.

PIA air hostess slips away in Canada leaving ‘Thank you’ note behind

Another air hostess of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) allegedly went missing while on duty in Canada.

The incident came to light when Maryam Raza, assigned to flight PK 782 from Pakistan to Toronto, failed to report for duty on the return flight, PK 784 from Toronto to Karachi.

Upon investigation, a note expressing gratitude to PIA was discovered alongside her uniform hanging in her room. “Thank you, PIA”, she wrote, reports Samaa News.

This marks the third reported case this year of PIA flight attendants allegedly ‘slipping’ while on duty, with two of them being women.

Despite measures such as collecting passports of flight attendants assigned to Toronto flights to prevent such incidents, the effectiveness of these policies has come under scrutiny.

Experts cite low pay and a lack of job security within the national airline as the primary reasons behind these alleged instances of slippage but above all it maligns the image of the country on an international level.

Sania Mirza says Lahore and Delhi are quite similar

An old interview of former Indian tennis player Sania Mirza has appeared online with host Kamiya Jani, where she discussed her marriage with Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik. The pair are now divorced and Malik has gone on to marry again.
The interview, which took place in October 2022, sheds light on Sania’s experiences visiting Pakistan and the cultural dynamics of marrying someone from across the border.

“We go there actually once a year because Shoaib’s family still lives there and obviously Izhan goes to meet them, and you know we do meet them every year, once a year, and they come here once a year,” Mirza said about visiting Pakistan.

Discussing the differences and similarities between India and it’s neighbour, Sania acknowledged both aspects. Drawing on her South Indian background, she admitted feeling a cultural difference but highlighted the resemblance between Lahore and Delhi, saying, “If I was from Delhi, I wouldn’t feel that much of a culture shock. Because Lahore is a lot similar to Delhi. The way they speak, the way they eat, the things they eat, you know, all that kind of… Culturally, they’re just Punjabis, right? So it’s a little more similar.”

Despite the similarities, she noted, “But they are different in some ways also. You can tell, I mean, at least I can tell when there is a Pakistani speaking or an Indian person speaking…to another person, they might not be able to tell but I can tell the differences.”

In a surprising development, Shoaib announced his third marriage to Pakistani actor Sana Javed, leading to the revelation of his split with Sania. The newlyweds shared joyous pictures from their wedding ceremony on social media.

Shortly after, Indian news outlet PTI confirmed that Sania and Shoaib had divorced. Sania’s father Imran Mirza disclosed to PTI that Sania took a khula from Shoaib, officially confirming the end of their relationship. Taking to Instagram, Imran addressed speculation about his daughter’s marriage, emphasizing the need for privacy and confirming their divorce.

PTI intra-party polls: Barrister Gohar submits nomination papers for party chairman

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Barrister Gohar Ali Khan has submitted his nomination papers for the post of party chairman in the upcoming intra-party elections, days after Barrister Ali Zafar withdrew from the race for the position.

If Gohar Khan is elected, it will be his second term as party chief, having previously served as PTI chairman after getting elected in intra-party polls conducted on December 2, 2023, as per The News.

The development comes after the party’s announcement last week they it is holding fresh intra-party elections on March 3 after the Supreme Court upheld the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) plea to uphold its decision declaring the PTI’s intra-party elections null and void due to administrative irregularities pertaining to its failure to adhere to its own Constitution and the provisions of the Election Act 2017 and Election Rules 2017.

The party’s federal election commissioner, Raof Hasan, issued the election schedule, as February 25 was the last date to submit nomination papers for candidates who wanted to take part in intra-party elections.

However, the final decision on nomination papers will be announced on February 27, and the polling will be held on March 3 at the PTI’s central office as well as provincial secretariats.

  • PSL 9: How can Lahore Qalandars qualify for playoff stage?

Defending champions Lahore Qalandars have had a tough run after losing all five of their matches so far in the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) season nine. The two-time champions are currently at the bottom of the points table and their next match is against league leaders Multan Sultans in Lahore tomorrow. To remain in the hunt for the playoffs, Lahore will need to win all their remaining five matches and collect 10 points.

The minimum number of points required to qualify for the play-offs has generally been 10. Peshawar Zalmi in 2023, Karachi Kings in 2021 and 2019 and Quetta Gladiators in 2018 qualified for the playoffs with 10 points, the lowest among the four teams that made it to the next round. Islamabad United qualified for the playoffs in 2022 with eight points and Peshawar Zalmi with nine points in 2020.

So if we look at the PSL results of previous years, Lahore Qalandars should not lose all hope yet. Lahore will now play their next match against Multan Sultans at the Gaddafi Stadium on February 27, after which the defending champions will face Peshawar Zalmi at the Pindi Stadium on March 2. Lahore Qalandars will face Islamabad United at Pindi Stadium on March 6. On March 9, the teams of Lahore and Karachi Kings will face each other at the National Bank Stadium. On March 10, Lahore Qalandars will face Quetta Gladiators in their final match.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Maryam Nawaz has been elected as Punjab’s Chief Minister (CM) on Monday afternoon after Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) boycotted the electoral process in the assembly.

Maryam, who has become the first-ever female chief minister in Pakistan’s history, won the elections after receiving the backing of 220 MPAs in the provincial assembly.

Her opponent, Sunni Ittehad Council’s (SIC) candidate Rana Aftab Ahmad, didn’t get any votes because his party boycotted the electoral process for CM.

“The votes have been counted according to which Maryam has obtained 220 votes and SIC candidate Rana Aftab Aftab secured zero votes,” said Speaker Malik Ahmad Khan while presiding over the session.

  • Ali Amin Gandapur to contest independently for CM KP position

Ali Amin Gandapur to contest independently for CM KP position

Ali Amin Gandapur, a prominent leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and perhaps the next Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), has opted out of joining the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC).

Instead, he has chosen to contest independently for the top provincial post, backed by PTI members aligned with the SIC, as reported by The News on Monday.

Following general elections, independent winners supported by PTI from KP have affiliated themselves with the SIC to secure designated seats for women and religious minority representatives.

However, Gandapur, who secured victory from Dera Ismail Khan, will pursue the PTI’s provincial presidency and is actively involved in the party’s intra-party elections scheduled for March 3, having submitted his nomination papers accordingly.

In parallel, Ali Asghar, another PTI member, has submitted his papers for the position of provincial general secretary, while Aqibullah Khan, nominated by PTI and the brother of senior leader Asad Qaiser, will compete for a KP Assembly office position under the SIC banner.

The announcement of KP cabinet members is pending final approval from PTI’s founding chairman, Imran Khan, following extensive consultations. Additionally, the PTI is deliberating over several candidates for the deputy speaker position, with the chosen individual’s identity expected to be disclosed imminently.

On the opposition front, parties have resolved not to concede ground to PTI and have declared intentions to nominate candidates for chief minister, speaker, and deputy speaker roles. The opposition plans to finalize consensus candidates following an imminent meeting.

Abdul Jalil Jan, the spokesperson for Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), confirmed that neither Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) nor Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) have initiated talks with their party regarding the election of KP Assembly officials.

With the inaugural session of the KP Assembly scheduled for February 28, the assembly will witness the swearing-in of newly elected members, followed by the election of the speaker, deputy speaker, and chief minister.

Meanwhile, Ali Amin Gandapur expressed his commitment to democratic principles and serving the people during interactions with elected members, party workers, and various stakeholders.

He expressed these views during meetings with the members-elect of the national and provincial assemblies, party workers and people from different walks of life, including scholars and lawyers, at the Speaker’s House.

Gandapur spoke about improving the province’s law and order situation as well as adding health cards, langar khana, shelter homes and police reforms would be restored. He said that the people would be provided with a uniform education system, while the lack of resources would not be a hurdle in the completion of this great mission.

ASP Sheharbano to be awarded highest police award for exemplary courage

ASP Sheharbano Naqvi, who rescued a terrorised woman from a charged mob, is now being nominated for the highest gallantry award- the Quaid-e-Azam Police Medal.

In a viral video circulating online, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Shehrbano was seen trying to calm an angry crowd of Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) supporters who were allegedly angry with a woman in a small restaurant. The woman was wearing a dress with Arabic letters printed on it. Without knowing what the letters meant, men around her got offended and accused her of blasphemy by wearing Quranic Ayats. ASP Shehrbano reached in time and saved the woman from the crowd.

She was praised on social media for defusing the situation in a controlled manner.

However, it is not the first time ASP Sheharbano has been praised for doing the right. In November last year, she became the face of a soft image of the Punjab Police when she, along with the IG Punjab Dr Usman Anwar, inaugurated a one-of-a-kind Pet Park in Lahore.

She also made headlines for her compassion towards sniffer dogs of the police department who are now adopted after retirement instead of being euthanized.

‘Speechless’; Celebs react to false allegations by mob against woman’s kurta

A woman wearing a dress with Arabic writing printed on it was attacked by a violent mob on Sunday. Videos of the incident quickly spread online, showing the mob surrounding her while she was at a restaurant in Lahore’s Ichhra Market.
Some people there accused her of having Quranic verses printed on her dress, which they found offensive. They were angry because of the Arabic writing on her dress, not knowing what it really meant. The dress actually has the word ‘sweet’ written on it.

While some tried to protect the terrified woman her from the false accusations, the police came to control situation and took the woman home safely.
Later, it was found that there were no Quranic verses on her dress, just Arabic words.

Celebrities reacted to the news with shock and horror. Many expressed admiration for the female police officer who led the woman to safety.

WTO launches $50m fund for female entrepreneurs in developing world

The director general of the World Trade Organisation, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, on Sunday launched a $50 million fund to help female entrepeneurs in developing countries to export more using the opportunities offered by the digital economy.

The announcement came ahead of the 13th ministerial conference of the WTO which opens on February 29 in the United Arab Emirates.

Okonjo-Iweala, speaking alongside the Emirati Minster of State for Foreign Trade Thani al-Zeyoudi, said the “ground-breaking initiative… embodies our collective commitment to empower women”.

“We need catalytic solutions to solve the financing issue that women face,” she added.

The fund will help businesses run by women in developing countries to adopt digital technologies and increase their online presence.

Zeyoudi said his country would contribute $5 million to the fund, adding “this initiative allows us to celebrate the invaluable contribution of women entrepreneurs and women led businesses around the world and to recognise the critical role they play in driving economic growth”.

“While women are one half the world’s population, they only contribute 37 percent to the global GDP,” he said.

Also at the announcement was Saudi Arabian Minister of Commerce Majid al-Kasabi, who called it a “milestone” and said his country was “dedicated” to supporting female empowerment.

Okonjo-Iweala said that in meeting female entrepeneurs, “a common refrain among them is the need for adequate financing to scale their businesses and to tap into the vast opportunities of global trade”.
