CAA employees announce nationwide protests, demand DG’s removal

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) officers and employees unions have formally announced their intent to hold nationwide airport protests today. Furthermore, the unions have collectively resolved to initiate a campaign aimed at the removal of the current Director-General (DG) of the CAA.

According to a report by ARY News, these demonstrations are a direct response to the federal government’s recent decision to contract out the management of three prominent airports, which has elicited strong opposition from CAA personnel.

In the month of July, CAA employees had previously expressed their objections to the outsourcing of Pakistan’s three major airports.

In this regard, a protest was organized at Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International Airport, led by the CAA’s union and officer association.

‘Culpa Mia’ actor Gabriel Guevara arrested on sexual assault charges

Spanish actor Gabriel Guevara has been arrested at the Venice Film Festival on an international arrest warrant accusing him of sexual assault in France, as reported by Hollywood Reporter. The actor was set to receive the best young actor honor award given out by Filming Italy. After his arrest, the organisation released a statement saying they had cancelled the award as a precautionary measure, and were waiting for the outcome of the case.

The Venice Film Festival posted a statement on their official account to address the arrest:

#BiennaleCinema2023#Venezia80#LaBiennaleDiVenezia would like to specify that the presence in #Venice of Spanish actor #GabrielGuevara, that some press websites have recently reported as being under arrest, was not linked to any activity or production of the 80th Venice International Film Festival.”

Guevara sky rocketed to international fame after the Amazon Prime movie ‘Culpa Mia’ where he played the rebellious step brother, Nick, who clashes with his step sister Noah (played by Nicole Wallace) after she moves to their mansion after their parents re-marry. The two originally start off as enemies, but soon come to realise their feelings for each other can’t be ignored.

  • Why wasn’t ‘Maula Jatt’ nominated for the Lux Style Awards?

Why wasn’t ‘Maula Jatt’ nominated for the Lux Style Awards?

Nominations for the 22nd Lux Style Awards were announced on 3rd September, with industry members being quick to notice one notable omission. ‘The Legend of Maula Jatt’, the biggest hit of the year, was not nominated among the films. Surprising considering that the movie received critical acclaim for its writing, acting, action sequences and made $13.8 million worldwide.

Journalist Hassan Kazmi has uncovered the reason now, by releasing a statement from film producer Ammara Hikmat, who stated:

“While we are honoured that Lux considered our film for their nominations, we find that their limited range of film categories doesn’t align with our values. The absence of categories for best director or writer, etc, disregarding their major and substantial creative contributions, while including one for best playback song doesn’t resonate with our vision for comprehensive film recognition. Therefore, we’ve decided not to make an exception in this case.”

Kazmi further tweeted that the team behind ‘TLOMJ’ had stepped back so to give other films a proper chance:

“The Legend of Maula Jatt is not even up for votes in #LSA2023 I have learnt that the makers have #TLOMJ have regretted as it was the biggest film, so the makers have decided to give others a chance. I have learnt from the sources that The Legend of Maula Jatt will be acknowledged at the main event in October this year.”

While Maula Jatt is out of the running, once more male actors charged with abuse have been nominated for the Lux Style Awards. Feroze Khan, who was publicly accused by his ex-wife Syeda Aliza of domestic violence and torture, was nominated twice for best male actor in dramas, and also for his performance in ‘Tich Button’.

While Mohsin Abbas Haider, who was publicly accused by his wife of domestic abuse, and then found guilty by a Lahore court in 2019, was nominated for his performance in the drama ‘Siyani’.

Former Zimbabwe captain Heath Streak dies after long battle with cancer

Former Zimbabwe captain Heath Streak has died at the age of 49 after a prolonged battle with advanced colon and liver cancer. He is survived by his wife, Nadine, and four children.

Nadine posted on social media: “In the early hours of this morning, Sunday the 3rd of September 2023, the greatest love of my life and the father of my beautiful children, was carried to be with the Angels from his home where he wished to spend his last days surrounded by his family and closest loved ones,”

Streak was Zimbabwe’s biggest cricketing star of the 1990s. He represented his country in 65 Tests, making him their second-most capped Test player, and 189 ODIs between 1993 and 2005. He was the team’s leading bowler, with 216 Test wickets and 239 ODI wickets, and the only Zimbabwe bowler to take more than 100 Test wickets and over 200 ODI wickets. He was also the seventh-highest Test run-scorer, with 1990 runs, and one of 16 Zimbabwe batters to score more than 2000 ODI runs, finishing with 2943.

“This is a very sad day for Zimbabwe and a sad day for cricket as we, on the one hand, mourn the demise of a true great of our beautiful game and, on the other, celebrate the greatness of what Heath gave us: he played with passion, spirit and was nothing less than an inspirational figure who raised our flag high and touched lives within the sport and beyond,” Zimbabwe Cricket chair Tavengwa Mukuhlani said.

At the age of 19, Heath Streak made his international debut with a match against South Africa during the 1993 Hero Cup.

The same year, he played a test match against Pakistan in Karachi, during which he took eight wickets in a match in Rawalpindi.

Streak became the captain of Zimbabwe in 2000 but resigned in 2001 as his leadership had an impact on his performance.

His career as a cricketer was also interfered with by the introduction of quota systems. Hence, selection interference and payment issues led to Streak’s first resignation as captain. He, however, became the captain again in 2002, and the team qualified for 2003 World Cup, where Zimbabwe were co-hosts.

In 2004, Streak resigned as captain for the second time after his friction with the board, resulting in 13 other white players walking out from the national side.

Inexperienced players led to poor results. Streak, being the only one, rejoined following year. He played six Tests and six ODIs (two for Africa XI against Asia XI in August 2005) before retiring from international cricket at the age of 32 in 2005.

Streak then played for Warwickshire and was their captain briefly. He joined Ahmedabad Rockets in Indian Cricket League. He returned to Zimbabwe once again, now as a coach. In 2013, however, Streak’s contract was not renewed.

He coached at domestic union, Matabeleland Tuskers, and founded his own academy, the Heath Streak Academy, in Bulawayo in 2014.

He also found gigs as a bowling coach across the world and had stints with Bangladesh (2014-2016) and Gujarat Lions (in the 2016 and 2017 editions of the IPL). He again returned to Zimbabwe as head coach in 2016. During the 2018 World Cup qualifier held in Zimbabwe, the team lost an important match to the UAE and missed out on the World Cup. Streak and his entire coaching staff were sacked. He went on to have short stints with Scotland, Somerset, and Kolkata Knight Riders.

In 2021, Streak was banned for eight years after being charged with five breaches of the ICC’s anti-corruption code, including accepting payment in bitcoins from a potential corruptor – all of which he admitted. However, he later denied attempts to fix matches but admitted to disclosing inside information in regards to international matches.

Twitter furious with Indian cricket board’s Jay Shah who didn’t let India play in Pakistan

After rain ended the highly ended Pak-India Asia Cup 2023 match, X (formerly Twitter) turned its anger towards Jay Shah, Secretary of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) who refused to let the tournament be played out in hosts Pakistan. Shah remained adamant that India will not play in Pakistan, citing imaginary security concerns, ignoring the fact that major teams were all satisfied with security arrangements after touring the country.

When Saturday’s game got interrupted twice and eventually washed out by rain, cricket fans were up in arms against Shah, the son of Indian Home Minister and BJP leader Amit Shah.

DC Peshawar issues detention orders of 11 PTM activists

The district administration of Peshawar has issued orders to detain 11 activists of the Pashtun Tahaffuz Movement (PTM) under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO), on allegations of provoking the public against the government’s policies and the armed forces of the country.

According to the detention order, SSP operations wrote a letter to the deputy commissioner stating that the Gulberg police station SHO provided a list of the PTM activists who provoked the public against the Pakistan Army and other institutions of Pakistan.

The latter, issued by the SSP operations, informed the district administration that the individuals on the list pose a risk to the stability and peace of the country. They violated the writ of the government and the law and order situation in the area.

“The activities of the said individuals are against the law, and there is apprehension that they may continue their activities in the future,” the detention orders issued by the deputy commissioner said, adding that the administration considered the activities prejudicial to public safety and might create a law and order situation in the district.
