  • Modi, Bilawal, Tariq Jamil among others wish PM Khan a swift recovery

Prime Minister Imran Khan on March 20 tested positive for COVID-19. According to details, the premier is suffering from ‘mild symptoms’ and is self-isolating at home. PM Khan’s wife Bushra Bibi has also tested positive for the virus.

Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Health Dr Faisal Sultan, while talking to the media, said that they “are monitoring his clinical parameters, and medical treatment will be given to him if required.”

“Right now, there is no need for any treatment, as such,” added Dr Sultan.

Soon after the news of PM Imran testing positive spread, prayers started pouring in for his speedy recovery. Among those who sent him good wishes include Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, Mahinda Rajapaksa, Maulana Tariq Jamil, PPP co-chairperson Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and PML-N’s Ahsan Iqbal.

“Best wishes to PM Imran for a speedy recovery from COVID-19,” said PM Modi.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with him during this time of difficulty,” said PM Rajapaksa.

“May Allah grant him full and speedy recovery,” said Maulana Tariq Jamil.

PPP’s BBZ and Sherry Rehman and PML-N’s Ahsan Iqbal also prayed for the PM’s swift recovery.

PM Khan’s former teammates Wasim Akram, Ramiz Raja and Waqar Younis also prayed for his swift recovery.

  • ‘You call yourself professor… mind your tone’: Ahsan Iqbal gets a scolding from NA speaker

Ruckus on Friday marred yet another session of the National Assembly as Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) senior leader Ahsan Iqbal got a scolding from speaker of the House, Asad Qaiser.

“Please follow rules. I am doing so too […] mind your tone,” the speaker told the opposition lawmaker.

While the reason behind the war of words has not yet been confirmed by any, a video of the episode showed Iqbal repeatedly interrupting the speaker, demanding what appeared to be more time on the floor of the House.

“Please mind your tone. You have been a minister, and you call yourself ‘professor’… is this the way to talk?” a visibly displeased Qaiser was seen asking Iqbal who kept talking back at the speaker.

Earlier, rumpus also erupted after PML-N MNA Afzal Khokhar tabled a privilege motion.

During the session, while talking about the operation to demolish his Lahore residence, the Khokhar Palace, the PML-N leader told the House that the administration had stormed his place late at night and destroyed furniture among other things.

“This type of attitude of Punjab authorities will not be tolerated,” he said.

The House has been adjourned to meet again on Monday.

  • Twitterati want US embassy to apologise for ‘calling Imran a dictator’

Twitterati want US embassy to apologise for ‘calling Imran a dictator’

Pakistani Twitter users are asking the US embassy in Pakistan to extend an apology for retweeting Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Ahsan Iqbal’s remarks wherein he called Prime Minister Imran Khan a “dictator”.

Iqbal had shared an article titled ‘Trump’s defeat is a blow for the world’s demagogues and dictators’, saying like Trump, Imran will be gone soon.

The tweet was subsequently shared by the US embassy on its official account, attracting flak by social media users who asked the embassy to issue an apology for endorsing Iqbal’s opinion.

Imran Ghazali, who was recently appointed as digital media head by PM Imran, called out the embassy for “disrespectful” tweet.

Punjab CM’s spokesperson Azhar Mashwani asked outgoing US President Donald Trump to intervene on the issue. “Is this how US Embassies under you will behave for next 2 and half months?”

PTI Deputy Information Secretary said that US embassy should “explain and apologize publicly’ over its “unethical act”.

The backlash prompted the US embassy to issue an apology in the afternoon. It said: “The US Embassy does not endorse the posting or retweeting of political messages. We apologize for any confusion that may have resulted from the unauthorized post.”

PML-N leader calls Imran Khan ‘Trump junior’

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) senior leader Ahsan Iqbal has likened Prime Minister Imran Khan to US President Donald Trump, saying like Trump, Imran was also a “polarising figure” in the politics.

In a tweet, Iqbal said it’s time to get rid of Imran Khan, whose politics is based on “hate” like his American counterpart. “Pakistan will unite again like it was in 2018,” he claimed, referring to the reign of the PML-N government.

The statement by the PML-N leader came amid reports of Democrat Joe Biden’s projected victory in the US elections. The Democrat nominee is in the clear lead, as he needs only 6 votes to win the polls.

Donald Trump has proved to be one of the most polarising presidents in the American history. Not only he played down the coronavirus pandemic in the country that has claimed over 200,000 lives, he has also refused to condemn the white supremacist groups, such as Proud Boys.

According to a USA Today report, “President Trump has undermined Black Lives Matter protesters, calling them ‘thugs’. He has made Asian-Americans the target of hate crimes, calling the deadly coronavirus the ‘Chinese virus’.”

It may be mentioned that an alliance of opposition parties against Imran government is in full swing. These parties have joined hands for oust the prime minister in the wake of inflation and other economic issues.

  • PML-N stands by Ayaz Sadiq’s ‘unforgivable offence’

PML-N stands by Ayaz Sadiq’s ‘unforgivable offence’

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has decided to stand by its party leader Ayaz Sadiq over a controversial statement pertaining to Indian pilot Abhinandan’s release, saying Sadiq was being targetted to settle political scores.

In separate statements, PML-N leader Ahsan Iqbal and Rana Sanaullah defended the former National Assembly speaker and said the government was blowing his remarks out of proportion. The statement came a day after the government spokesperson accused Sadiq of committing an “unforgivable offence”.

PML-N General Secretary Ahsan Iqbal said that there was nothing illogical about Ayaz’s statement, explaining that “a weak economy translates into a weak defence”. “Accumulative national strength is reliant to an extent on armed forces and to a larger extent on its economic and foreign policy depth.”

Meanwhile, Sanaullah, who heads the party’s Punjab chapter, said the government’s attempts to link the statement with the Indian narrative were problematic.

“If Ayaz Sadiq’s choice of words was not right, where was the National Assembly speaker? The government is linking the opposition’s statements with the Indian narrative,” he remarked. The situation will get out of control if things continue in the same manner, he warned.

Meanwhile, at least two complaints were registered against the PML-N leader for issuing a controversial statement on the floor of the National Assembly. These complaints were lodged at the Civil Lines police station, Lahore, and Secretariat police station, Islamabad.

The complainants accused the lawmaker of “hurting the sentiments of the nation” and malign Pakistan on a global level.

Dunya News reported that the complainants were forwarded to the legal departments of the police for consultation and action would be taken accordingly.

On Friday, Federal Minister for Information Shibli Faraz hinted at legal action against Ayaz Sadiq for accusing the government of releasing Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman of the Indian Air Force (IAF) under pressure. “What Ayaz Sadiq said is not forgivable,” he tweeted, adding that law will take its course now.

  • PML-N’s Ahsan Iqbal accidentally arrives at accountability court, sent back home

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader and former federal minister Ahsan Iqbal on Tuesday accidentally arrived at an accountability court in Islamabad, from where he was sent back home by court staff.

As per the details, the PML-N stalwart, against whom the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has filed a reference over alleged corruption in the Narowal Sport City project, is to appear before the court tomorrow (Wednesday).

He, however, mistakenly arrived at the court a day earlier and was informed that his hearing wasn’t until a day later, after which he returned back home.

Reacting to The Current‘s report on Twitter, Iqbal said:

Iqbal was earlier also arrested in connection to the probe into the sports complex built in his hometown.

Construction of the complex, which includes a cricket stadium, gymnasium, squash and hockey ground, began in 2009 when Iqbal was in the opposition. But work picked up pace when the PML-N came to power in the 2013 election. That year, Iqbal was appointed the minister for planning and development.

Below is the charge sheet against the politician from December last year:

    • Illegally increasing the cost of the Narowal Sports City complex from Rs35.410 million to Rs97.520 million, without approval from the Planning Commission’s Central Development Working Party (CDWP). Ahsan, adds NAB, was the minister of planning and development and the deputy chairman of the CDWP at the time. Rather than taking the project to the CDWP, he instead approved it on his own.

    • Iqbal initiated the project without a feasibility study, which was in violation of the development manual of the Planning Commission.

    • After the 18th Amendment, the project was devolved to the Punjab government in 2012 to be completed with its own resources. Yet, reads the charge sheet, funds were taken from the federal government to bankroll the complex. Iqbal, it adds, “further enhanced the scope of the project without any demand from the provincial government”.

Opp announces APC to get rid of govt, again

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) have announced to hold an ‘All Parties Conference’ (APC) after Eidul Azha in order to discuss strategies to “get rid of this government”.

Addressing a joint press conference, PPP’s Qamar Zaman Kaira and PML-N’s Ahsan Iqbal said that a coordination committee meeting will be held this week to discuss the APC agenda.

The presser was held after a meeting between PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and a three-member PML-N delegation at Bilawal House, Lahore. The PML-N delegation included Iqbal, Khawaja Saad Rafique and Ayaz Sadiq, while PPP’s Kaira, Chaudhry Manzoor and Hasan Murtaza also attended the meeting.

Addressing reporters, Kaira said that opposition parties will “complete our homework” before Eidul Azha and discuss strategies to oust the government in the APC.

“The opposition feels that Pakistan will face several external and internal dangers [if] this government remains in power,” Iqbal said. “[Considering] what is happening in our region, we need internal unity but this government only has a vengeful agenda with which it is disintegrating the country.

“In this situation, the country’s two biggest opposition parties agree that to get rid of this incompetent government will be representative of this country’s 220 million people.”

Ahsan also criticised the government for trying to introduce a law that is “twice as bad” as the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in order to put an end to terror financing and comply with Financial Action Task Force’s (FATF) guidelines. The law, he said, would allow authorities to arrest a suspect for 90 days without getting a remand and the detention can be extended without allowing the suspect to obtain a bail.

“FATF members are not telling Pakistan to turn the country into a fascist state through legislation [to stop terror financing],” the PML-N MNA said and added that the move was “defaming FATF, the international community and the United Nations”. He said that while the opposition was in favour of compliance with FATF guidelines, it would not allow the government to curb individual rights and freedom.

He accused the government of making people’s lives difficult by pushing them into poverty, throttling the media and isolating the country in the international community.

In response to a question regarding Maryam Nawaz’s participation in the upcoming meetings, Iqbal said that “no one has played as huge a role in public mobilisation than” the former premier’s daughter. He added that she will play her role when it came to public mobilisation.

Separately, Ahsan Iqbal, in a conversation with The Current, said that the APC would provide opposition parties a chance to present a unified stance on how to bring change in the government, which the entire opposition believes has thoroughly been exposed for its “incompetence and making irreparable damage to country’s economy and governance”.

“A joint opposition coordination committee comprising of senior leaders from all parties has been formed to work out options for the APC to be meaningful,” he said.
