    Indian film body issues warning against working with Pak artists online

    The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) has warned Indian singers and musicians against working with Pakistani artistes and said that failure to comply would lead to “strict disciplinary action”. According to a report in the Hindustan Times, the film body issued this warning after a collaboration between Indian artistes and Pakistani singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan was brought to its notice.

    “We are pained to inform all members that despite being fully aware that FWICE has issued a total non-cooperation circular advising all members not to work in any manner whatsoever with all Pakistani artistes, singers and technicians, some members are blatantly violating the non-cooperation circular,” a letter from FWICE read.

    “We have been informed that more such Entertainment products and songs are being planned and made. We have to strictly inform all the members of our affiliates to kindly note that the non-cooperation circular is valid and subsisting and anyone found cooperating or working in any manner with any Pakistani artistes, singers and technicians, in any mode or media of entertainment will be subject to strict disciplinary action,” the letter further added.

    “One should also realise that while the entire world is fighting against the coronavirus, Pakistan is still busy killing our soldiers on the borders. Kindly note no violation of this circular will be allowed and we are sure all members will follow our advice in their own interest,” it added.

    Another copyright violation for Coke Studio Season 12

    Ever since Coke Studio began in 2008, it has had its fair share of highs and low. After a disastrous Season 11, the music platform brought back Rohail Hyatt for the 12th season. Unfortunately, Season 12 didn’t impress audiences either and it hasn’t been a smooth sailing considering three of its songs have been taken down for copyright infringement.

    According to latest reports, the studio has been taken to court over the track Mundeya, sung by Ali Sethi and Qurat-ul-Ain Balouch. The song has also been struck down due to a copyright violation claim. The studio says that the song, also featured in the film Mukhra, was a tribute to its original singers: Madam Noor Jehan and Nadeem.

    The ownership of the song’s censorship certificate originally belonged to Muhammad Sadiq. After his death, the ownership was passed down to his son Muhammad Saleem, who is now taking Coke Studio to court for copyright violation.

    Saleem claims that Coke Studio did not seek any permission before remixing the song. Hence the studio has been directed to stop airing the song.

    Previously, Abrarul Haq’s Billo, Rachel Viccaji and Shuja Haider’s Saiyaan and Sanam Marvi’s Hairaan Hua were taken down for copyright infringement.

    Singer Ali Sethi to feature in Times Square display on Christmas days

    Pakistani musician Ali Sethi will feature in a special video display in New York’s (NY) iconic Times Square over the Christmas holidays.

    Ali Sethi broke this news on his Instagram account where he wrote, “Guess who’s gonna be featured here (NY Times Square] on 13 screens twice a day for a full week? C’est moi, that’s who! Along with a bunch of amazing artistes who collaborated with global music force DU Yun in 2019″.

    Sponsored by the Beijing Century Foundation and NY’s Times Square, the Future Tradition video celebrates the genre-bending work of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Du Yun and her global collaborators.

    Earlier this year, Sethi and Du Yun joined hands to create a classical work for NY’s Carnegie Hall and the Times Square display will show a portion of his performance. This will be followed by other images from Du Yun’s ouevre.

    The Dil Lagaayein star in a statement said, “I feel honoured to be a part of this display, I have always believed in our musical traditions, in their power to win hearts and change minds, and I feel so proud to represent them before the world.”

    The video display will run twice a day on thirteen screens from December 15th to 21st, with sixteen sightings on December 16th.

    The young classical singer has outclassed himself in Coke Studio’s 12th season. His rendition of Gulon Main Rang, originally sung by Mehdi Hasan, has been widely shared and acclaimed by his fans. Ali Sethi is currently trending on Twitter and his YouTube video had 103K views in three hours.

    Others say that Ali Sethi needs more recognition than he is given.

    Ali Sethi, as a young classical singer, still manages to keep his own identity while matching the soul of the greats before him.

    Celebrities, including Mahira Khan, will be at the Faiz Festival this weekend

    The Faiz International Festival is in its 5th year and like previous years, celebrities are flocking to the event. The three-day festival will take place at Alhamra in Lahore.

    The event will kick off on Friday with a performance by Ali Sethi and a play dedicated to Asma Jehangir by Ajoka Theatre. There will also be an exhibition of History and Contemporary Sikh Art as part of Guru Nanak’s 550th birth anniversary celebrations.

    Celebrities like Mahira Khan, Ahsan Khan, Eman Suleman and Nimra Bucha will be part of sessions as will be journalists Hamid Mir, Nasim Zehra and Wusutullah Khan. Politicians like PTI’s Asad Umar and Yasmin Rashid and PPP’s Shazia Marri and Raza Rabbani will also be attending.
