‘Culpa Mia’ actor Gabriel Guevara arrested on sexual assault charges

Spanish actor Gabriel Guevara has been arrested at the Venice Film Festival on an international arrest warrant accusing him of sexual assault in France, as reported by Hollywood Reporter. The actor was set to receive the best young actor honor award given out by Filming Italy. After his arrest, the organisation released a statement saying they had cancelled the award as a precautionary measure, and were waiting for the outcome of the case.

The Venice Film Festival posted a statement on their official account to address the arrest:

#BiennaleCinema2023#Venezia80#LaBiennaleDiVenezia would like to specify that the presence in #Venice of Spanish actor #GabrielGuevara, that some press websites have recently reported as being under arrest, was not linked to any activity or production of the 80th Venice International Film Festival.”

Guevara sky rocketed to international fame after the Amazon Prime movie ‘Culpa Mia’ where he played the rebellious step brother, Nick, who clashes with his step sister Noah (played by Nicole Wallace) after she moves to their mansion after their parents re-marry. The two originally start off as enemies, but soon come to realise their feelings for each other can’t be ignored.

  • Zoya Akhtar responds to backlash over Muslim representation in her films

Zoya Akhtar responds to backlash over Muslim representation in her films

Zoya Akhtar has been long criticised by social media users for the manner in which Muslims are represented in her films and dramas. The critically acclaimed series ‘Made In Heaven’, airing on Amazon Prime, prompted several users to criticise the director, who is the sister of actor Farhan Akhtar and daughter of Javed Akhtar, for episode 6. The criticism focused on the aspect that only polygamy marriages among Muslims are depicted rather the oppression or violence the community suffers from in India. The episode focuses on a woman Shehnaz, who attempts to kill herself after her husband gets married for the second time.

On Instagram, Zoya finally responded by responding to a commentator who asked her to show positive Muslim characters, and stop relying on regressive stereotypes.

The ‘Dil Dhadhakne Do’ director answered by listing several films where she had Muslim characters like Gully Boy, ‘Zindagi Milegi Na Dobara’, ‘Luck By Chance’:

“Zaffar Khan and Tanveer in Luck By Chance. Imran and Laila in ZNMD. Farah Ali in Dil Dhadakne Do. Practically everyone in Gully Boy. Sarfaraz Khan and Leila Shirazi, Kabir, Faiza and Nawab have in Made In Heaven.”

  • ‘Spark Notes version of an action series’: Critics blast Priyanka Chopra’s Citadel

Game of Thrones actor Richard Madden has teamed up with Bollywood turned Hollywood diva Priyanka Chopra for Amazon Prime’s action series ‘Citadel’, with the episodes already streaming online. Both actors went on the traditional promotional tour, gushing about each other, with Chopra revealing that this was the first time she was getting the same pay as her male co-star, and Madden praising Chopra as a ‘brilliant improvisor’ who is fully committed to her roles.

However critics are not impressed with the $300 million spectacle, calling it a ‘flop’, ‘poorly-paced’ and a cheap copy of James Bond movies, without anything much to say about the current affairs of the world.

Time magazine called the series ‘all spectacle, no substance’ and shared how aside from the glamorous locations, as well as the charming performances of both Chopra and Madden, who star as former lovers and top agents working for an elite international spy agency ‘Citadel’, the show didn’t offer much:

“But when the smoke clears, geopolitical window dressing aside, the show has little to say on the state of the world. Whether it’s due to behind-the-scenes turbulence, including the replacement of a showrunner and extensive reshoots, or comes out of the difficulty of making a spy thriller palatable to people in all of the 200-plus countries and territories where Prime Video is available, the absence of substantive ideas, or even much Bond-style humor, makes Citadel feel pretty pointless. Maybe it’s possible to make a great show that appeals to everyone without offending anyone, but this isn’t it.”

The Ringer had also shared criticism of the lack of dramatic tension, and called the show “a spark notes version of an action series” because of the limited attention given to detail and narrative, recounting how the original showrunner Josh Applebaum exited the series in 2020 over creative differences.

Rolling Stones has labelled Citadel as “$300 million disaster for Amazon,” and harshly calling it “bland, generic and almost shockingly cheap-looking, given the price tag.” The performances by Chopra and Madden were called ‘charming but also not popping off the screen.

  • Amazon to cut over 18,000 jobs citing economic uncertainty

Amazon to cut over 18,000 jobs citing economic uncertainty

Amazon has announced it will cut more than 18,000 jobs from its workforce, the largest set of layoffs in the US company’s history, as it battles to save costs.

The company’s e-commerce and human resources departments will be primarily impacted by the layoff decisions, which Amazon will announce on January 18.

The layoffs represent 6 per cent of Amazon’s almost 300,000 corporate employees and are a striking turnabout for a business that just tripled its base pay level in an effort to compete more fiercely for talent, according to BBC.

With around 1.5 million employees overall, including warehouse workers, Amazon is the second-largest private employer in the United States (US), after Walmart Inc.

CEO Andy Jassy claimed in the message that the unstable economy and the increased hiring over the last few years have made this year’s annual planning more difficult.

Amazon, whose stock price has more than halved in the past year, has prepared for slower growth as rising inflation has led both businesses and consumers to reduce spending. The company’s financial situation has drastically declined. It changed from a delivery service that was deemed essential during the epidemic to one that was overbuilt in comparison to overall demand.

Jassy’s statement was published after the Wall Street Journal reported that over 17,000 staff would be let go. He claimed that as a result of a leak, Amazon decided to break the news without first informing worried staff.

Amazon plans to pay severance and is still required to submit some legal notices regarding significant layoffs. Jassy claims that Amazon has survived unstable and difficult economic times in the past and will do so in the future.

  • Amazon plans to lay off 10,000 employees due to declining sales

Amazon plans to lay off 10,000 employees due to declining sales

Amazon is reportedly getting ready to lay off thousands of office workers due to decreasing sales and worries about an impending recession.

The e-commerce giant’s office personnel could lose about 10,000 of their employees, according to US media sources who requested anonymity.

Cuts are anticipated to have an impact on departments like e-commerce and personal devices.

The business warned it had overhired during the pandemic and had previously implemented a hiring freeze and stopped some of its warehouse expansions. Additionally, it has taken steps to close off some areas of its operations by shelving plans for things like a personal delivery robot.

The business announced last week that cutting costs would be a priority in its annual review of business operations. “As part of this year’s review, we’re of course taking into account the current macro-environment and considering opportunities to optimize costs,” the e-commerce company said in a statement.

According to media sources, the precise number of positions that will be eliminated is still uncertain.

Amazon is battling a dip in online sales after the epidemic saw a surge in its revenue. Despite a 15 per cent increase in overall revenue in the most recent quarter, the company has remained concerned about the forecast as the slowdown spreads to other industries, including its long-profit-boosting cloud computing division, Amazon Web Services.

On social media, the company’s founder Jeff Bezos, who is no longer serving as CEO but is still chairman of the board, declared that it was time to “batten down the hatches.”

Amazon joins a long list of other tech firms that have announced layoffs in an effort to signal an impending economic collapse. Included in the list is Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, which recently announced plans to eliminate 11,000 jobs, the largest reduction in staff in company history.

According to a survey by Challenger, Gray & Christmas, which analyses such announcements, US-based tech companies have cut more than 28,000 jobs overall this year, more than double the number from a year ago.

  • Fact Check: Sharif family ki corruption par independent documentary toh ban rehi hai, lekin it isn’t confirmed if it’s on Netflix/Amazon

Fact Check: Sharif family ki corruption par independent documentary toh ban rehi hai, lekin it isn’t confirmed if it’s on Netflix/Amazon

Claim: Several Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) politicians and multiple social media users on Twitter are claiming that an upcoming documentary, about the alleged corruption of Pakistan’s former Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif and his family, will be released on Netflix and Amazon Prime.

The trailer of the new documentary, titled “Behind Closed Doors” was released on social media on Monday, October 18.

The trailer was shared across platforms, raking up views.

The trailer features, amongst others, Imran Khan, the former prime minister, as well as several investigative journalists including Tom Stocks and John-Allan Namu.

Former Human Rights Minister Shireen Mazari tweeted, “Soon on Netflix and Amazon. A must-watch documentary on corruption very relevant as Sharifs also feature in it.”

PTI’s Finance and Health Minister in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Taimur Jhagra tweeted, “A film about corruption. Coming soon to Netflix / Amazon Prime. The truth is out there. In Pakistan, sadly it just seems to lead back the same people to corridors of power, again and again.”

Fact: According to the official website of Behind Closed Doors, the documentary highlights “Politically Exposed Persons (PEPs), people who hold a public function and as a result present higher risks of being involved in bribery or corruption.” It also mentions offshore leaks which have revealed that PEPs use the British financial system and offshore jurisdictions to launder, hide and re-invest their wealth into the global financial system.

“But what happens when a developing country fights back and attempts to get Britain to return the money that it claims has been stolen?” question the documentary makers.

The film is produced and directed by Michael Oswald and Murtaza Mehdi. The IMDb website states that Oswald is a UK-based director, writer and editor.

The webpage names all of Netflix’s upcoming releases till January 2023. Behind Closed Doors has not been listed.

The website of Prime Video by Amazon Studios also does not name the documentary as an upcoming release.

While several members of the PTI camp have claimed Behind Closed Doors will be featured on Netflix, the streaming service has made no such announcement nor have the makers of the documentary mentioned it on their website or YouTube channel.

  • Delhi High Court orders Amazon India to remove Pakistan-made Rooh Afza from listings

Delhi High Court orders Amazon India to remove Pakistan-made Rooh Afza from listings

The Delhi High Court ordered the e-commerce website Amazon to remove the listings after Rooh Afza’s Indian producer, Hamdard National Foundation, filed a lawsuit alleging that Pakistan-produced Rooh Afza was being sold in India through Amazon, according to The Indian Express.

Indians have been drinking Rooh Afza, a well-known beverage, for more than a century. The fact that its imported version was being sold on Amazon without the manufacturer’s information was shocking to the court.

On Wednesday, Justice Prathiba M. Singh ordered Amazon to remove the “listings of infringing ‘Rooh Afza’ products” within 48 hours.

Rooh Afza was first introduced by Hakim Hafiz Abdul Majeed in Delhi more than a century ago. After the partition, Hakim’s elder son relocated to India while the younger son chose Pakistan.

Currently, Hamdard National Foundation has the rights to the beverage in India, while Hamdard Laboratories (Waqf) makes it in Pakistan.

Last year, the Hamdard National Foundation discovered that some merchants were also listing Rooh Afza, and several of them received notifications as a result.

Later, it was discovered that the Rooh Afza bottles being sold in India on Amazon were really made in Pakistan, which is against the law.
