Asad Siddiqui criticizes biased casting practices in the entertainment industry

Actor Asad Siddiqui has criticized what he calls “biased casting practices” in the country’s entertainment industry, arguing that selections are often based on connections and appearance rather than talent.

In a recent appearance on Ushna Shah’s talk show, Siddiqui spoke openly about his concerns: “I have distanced myself from certain industry gatherings, citing instances of ‘sweet words’ shared in person that turn into criticism behind backs.”

Siddiqui also highlighted that casting often favors those with lighter skin tones or personal connections, a practice he called “unfair and apparent on screen.” He argued that these dynamics dilute merit and affect the quality of production.

To counter this, Siddiqui proposed a stronger audition process. He further revealed plans to enter production himself, expressing hope to create more equitable opportunities for aspiring actors.

Siddiqui, whose wife Zara Noor Abbas comes from a notable acting family that includes Bushra Ansari and Asma Abbas, has established himself as a prominent figure in Pakistan’s showbiz.

His remarks reflect a call from industry insiders for change in casting standards to better support talent over appearance or social ties.

Earlier, on Faysal Quraishi’s Podcast, Asad Siddiqui offered fans a glimpse into his journey to finding love with actor Zara Noor Abbas.

Asad revealed that he first heard of Zara through her aunt, Bushra Ansari, years before they met. “When I did my first dramas, Azar Ki Ayegi Baraat and Dolly Ki Ayegi Baraat, Zara was mentioned in passing. I had never seen her or a picture of her, but Bushra Apa would mention her,” he shared.

There was no instant spark or sense of destiny back then; Zara was just a name in casual conversation. Life moved on, as Asad explained, “Then that chapter closed, but six or seven years later we worked together again, and she mentioned Zara again.” Only later, by pure coincidence, did Zara come into his life in person.

The chemistry began as friendship, he recounted, fueled by shared friends like Sajal Ali, Yasir Hussain, and Asim Azhar. “Coincidentally, Zara was in town for work, and she was friends with Sajal. So, I went to meet up with them and we became friends,” he said, describing how they spent time in a group. “Yasir, Asim, and I were always together, and we would meet up with Zara and Sajal. Eventually, we got together. Those were good times.”

But for Asad, life changed dramatically once they married—and even more so when they welcomed their daughter, Noor e Jahan, this past March. “After marriage, you can’t be out of the house at all times. You should let your spouse know when you’re going to be home if you’ll eat with them or not. After a child, you can’t even do that. You’re on set and want them to pack up,” he shared, hinting at the challenges that come with balancing family and work. The transition to fatherhood has deepened his appreciation for Zara’s role.

Reflecting on parenthood, Asad noted, “I try to stay up with the baby as much as I can, but there are times when I’ll wake up in the middle of the night and see Zara already awake, walking around or feeding the baby. I’m always shocked by how a mother’s life is never her own after a baby. Everything revolves around the child.”

The caption for the video read: “No offence to Korean food but I guess, we don’t have the taste for it. The experience was fun but I won’t have Korean to save my life. I can’t. We can’t. Just can’t. We good with BIRYAAANI all the way.”

Even though the Korean BBQ didn’t get rave reviews, the family had a blast, laughing and enjoying the moment together.

Pakistani celebrities defend Kashmir after Hrithik Roshan’s derogatory ‘maalik’ comment

In the world of entertainment, movies are a way to tell stories, represent cultures, and express art. But sometimes, a movie can cause problems when it goes too far and includes content that is offensive. Recently, a Bollywood movie called ‘Fighter’ landed in controversy after Pakistani celebrities strongly reacted to what they thought was anti-Pakistani element.

The film has been accused of showing Pakistan in a negative light and promoting harmful stereotypes.

At one point in the movie, Hrithik Roshan says, “We are the owners, Pakistan has occupied Kashmir. (maalik hum Hain)”

Actors like Zara Noor Abbas took to social media to express anger.

Actor Asad Siddiqui vented on Instagram by saying, “It’s the same old story! Aren’t you guys tired of selling false stuff? Grow up! The world is moving forward, and you’re still promoting this cheap story of hatred. You could have promoted peace instead.”
He suggested checking facts that everyone knows, mentioning the incident where a MiG-21 was shot and the pilot was captured but released after a cup of tea.

Hira Khan, another showbiz star, also brought up the ‘tea’ incident, saying, “It’s sad that big superstars need to criticize Pakistan to make their movies work. I feel sorry for you guys.”

Adnan Siddiqui took to X to state, “Once celebrated for love, Bollywood now crafts hate-filled narratives, portraying us as villains. Despite our love for your films, it’s disheartening. Art transcends boundaries; let’s use it to promote love and peace. Two nations, victims of politics, deserve better.”

Hania Aamir, who is liked by people from both sides of the border, shared on her Instagram Story, “It’s really sad and unfortunate to find out that there are artists today who know how influential cinema is but still go ahead and create differences between the two countries. I feel sorry for the artists who believe in using their art to bring people together. It’s not good. Let art be free.”

The controversy around ‘Fighter’ arose from its trailer, which revealed that the movie revolves around an attack on Indian air forces in Pulwama. It references real events like the Pulwama attack and India’s actions in Balakot.

  • Zara Noor Abbas opens up on battling depression post miscarriage

Zara Noor Abbas opens up on battling depression post miscarriage

Actor Zara Noor Abbas opened up about her traumatic experience with her miscarriage and her subsequent state of mental health in a recent interview. She also shared valuable advice for expecting mothers so they are better prepared.

On Sunday, she shared a clip from a podcast with Frieha Altaf and wrote, “It’s always a task to talk about what you have lost forever. But after so much discussion and a few months later, I could finally talk my heart out with my beautiful and compassionate friend, Frieha Altaf, and share my experience of the healthcare system, the negligence, the aftermath of trauma, and how women clap so little for themselves and don’t know how brave and strong they are when it comes to resilience.”

“I hope I can gain some hope from women who have been through the same or maybe worse and together we can create awareness and have support groups for everyone to share their story,” she added.

Frieha addressed the matter by saying there of every 1,000 births, at least 53 stillborn. She encouraged the Badhshah Begum actor to talk about her experience.

“Looking at it now, it is a lot of support from the family, very less [from] friends, I think one or two, maybe four. It has to do a lot with my family. Asad, of course, because he was his child also,” she started, discussing her support system during the time. “When you have a child together, it makes your bond extremely beautiful but when you lose a child together, it makes your bond extremely beautiful also. I think me and Asad have seen the worst now, we ask, ‘What else will we see? Okay, it’s God’s will.’ Everything for me and Asad ends at whatever God wills because whatever is His will is His will. Yes, there’s an extreme sense of loss and I think I’m still grieving.”

Altaf directed the conversation towards guilt that mothers sometimes have in the aftermath of such a loss. Abbas admitted that she did suffer those feelings too. “I did at a point. I thought maybe I didn’t eat right, maybe I didn’t make myself strong enough, maybe I should have lost more weight before conceiving, become thinner, maybe I should have had an intake of vitamins, maybe I should’ve taken folic acid. But all of that is a ‘maybe’. God gives a child to even those who aren’t physically stable. He gives to those He wants to give to and takes from those He wants to take from.”

The Ehd-e-Wafa actor said her parents consoled her with the thought that it is probably what was best for the future of the child and the parents. “When it happened, my father and everybody kept saying, ‘Who knows? Maybe he wouldn’t have been able to do things that normal children can do. Then what would we do? It’s our kid, we can’t do anything, we have to keep him.’ This is for a better future, for us, for him. I am 120 per cent sure about it.”

She stressed on the importance of timing and taking care of your mental health as much as your physical health. “What I think women should know more about is that you can have a short cervix, you can have missing amniotic fluid in your system, you can have a weak uterus but all of these things you’ll never know before time. That is the beauty and payback of it. Until and unless a woman is pregnant, you cannot figure out these things. And when you’re pregnant, this is a huge miracle so try and take care of yourself mentally and physically as much as you can. Because as important as your physical being is, your mental being is much more important than that. And loss, I think, is a lifelong thing. I am a mother and he was my firstborn.”

Abbas shed light on the hopelessness that may follow such a loss. “One more thing I’d like to add is that loss brings you to a point where you don’t want to do anything again or try anything again or you’re scared of getting attached to people again because you think that this might repeat like before,” she said. “But I think that is the breakeven point where you have to step up and be like no, even if I’m going to fall again, I will not stop trying and I will not give up on what I think will happen. I have to keep on going. This difficult work is what I think life is about because if there’s no movement there’s no constant, hustle — and there’s no life.”

The Zebaish star recounted the process and advised expecting mothers to have their gynecologist’s personal number on hand, to book an appointment beforehand in order to avoid waiting in that fragile state, and have a plan B in case something goes wrong. She explained that she had gone for a regular check-up only for it to transition into the nightmare that premature birthing can become. She said she was in such as traumatic state, she needed someone to make decisions for her because she was unable to process her surroundings. The doctors made her sign papers that shifted the responsibility in case of her death on the table off their shoulders. She wasn’t even aware what she had signed until later.

Earlier this year, her actor-husband Asad Siddiqui talked about losing his child on Gup Shup with FUCHSIA.

“We lost a baby a while ago. It wasn’t a miscarriage; Zara actually delivered a 5-6 months baby, which I buried myself, revealed Asad. We named him Aurangzeb. It was a good time when we got to know that we are going to have a baby but unfortunately, some complications occurred due to which we lost our baby.”

He continued by adding that it was a very difficult time for the family, especially for Zara.

He also told about Zara’s condition saying, she went through many breakdowns, hormonal changes and many more.

He further said that he believes that everything happens with Allah’s will. “Whatever he has written in our fate, we’ll surely get it. You never know, maybe Allah has written something better for us.”

On the work front Asad can recently be seen currently in successful dramas, Sinf e Aahan and Aye Musht-e-Khaak.

  • Pakistan Railways paying Rs35 billion pension to unverified employees annually

Pakistan Railways paying Rs35 billion pension to unverified employees annually

About 115,000 Pakistan Railways (PR) retired employees who have not been verified have been receiving annual pensions totaling Rs35 billion, according to research by the government-funded Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE), a think tank housed within the Planning Commission.

It revealed in a statement yesterday that between 2015 and 2020, Pakistan Railways lost Rs144 billion. A deficit of Rs44 billion in 2020, which includes Rs36 billion for the pensions of 120,000 PR employees, is included in the losses, according to Dawn.

According to the PIDE report, the PR also received a subsidy from the government in 2020 worth Rs45 billion to make up for these losses.

Due to the intense competition from the road transportation industry and PR’s inability to implement a customer-centric business strategy due to a complicated bureaucratic structure, the public agency has been inefficient, underfunded, and overstaffed for the past 35 years, making losses.

The study also noted that 115,000 unverified PR retirees receive an annual pension of Rs35 billion. To solve the problem, a biometric verification system to confirm the pensioners in question has been proposed.

A Pay and Pension Commission (PPC) has also been established in this respect, and it will take into account issues pertaining to the railways and other public organizations.
