ASP Sheharbano leads #NeverAgain walk in Lahore

Punjab Police organised a walkathon titled ‘Never Again’ to raise awareness about violence against women in the backdrop of the Ichra bazaar incident.

The walk was joined by ASP Shehrbano Naqvi along with seniors of the police department including IG Punjab Police Dr. Usman Anwar. ASP Sheharbano questioned the people present at Ichhra Bazar for not coming forward to help the woman – who was harassed and attacked by a mob for wearing a shirt inscribed in Arabic. “Sure, the police is there to protect the citizens but society needs to take responsibility of making sure that its women are protected.”

The campaign is now being run all over Punjab province under the patronage of the provincial government and the police department.

Juggun Kazim all praise for ASP Sheharbano; kisses her hand

ASP Sheharbano Naqvi recently appeared in a morning show on Pakistan Television Network where the program host Juggun Kazim appreciated her for her courage and kissed her hand.

Naqvi is being feted continuously since she personally saved a woman from a charged mob in Ichra Bazar, Lahore, at risk to her own safety.

Juggan’s gesture has been getting a lot of reactions. Some think it was a bit too much while other think that the step was taken so that it could go viral.

Sheharbano is making waves for all the right reasons, all across national and international media. Juggun also posted a picture with the ASP and captioned it, “I met my hero today.” In the live show she said that because of Naqvi, she now feels safe in the country, adding that in the future her daughter will feel secure too.

During the course of the interview, the ASP lightheartedly explained the kind of upbringing she has had and what really happened that day. She said that she got to know about the call through her assistant about a religious offence. She emphasized that she immediately stood up to leave. “My mother is so used to me being on duty all the time that she said, have tea first,” Sheharbano related, to which she rolled her eyes like “seriously”.

Naqvi also recorded a session for Juggun’s YouTube Channel where she was again showered with praise but was asked about her future aspirations and the clauses that are helpful in women’s protection.

In the clip, she admitted to a desire to become a published writer in the future.

“Seek help. If you are stuck in a mob, do not argue and just make a call on 15,” she said while explaining that a similar incident had happened in the same market weeks before the Ichra Mob case and that woman out of fear changed her clothes. This provoked these people to force this woman. “Given the strong woman she was, she refused to change her clothes and this lead to that mob gathering around her.”

Speaking to the women of the country, Naqvi emphasised that, “If someone coerces you, for your dressing, views or the person you are with, then please call 15 or seek help from women police officers in the nearby police station.”

ASP Sheharbano tells why woman apologized in Ichra mob case

ASP Gulberg Sheharbano Naqvi has explained the process of rescuing the terrorised woman from a charged mob in Ichra Bazaar, Lahore. She also addressed criticism posed against her in an interview with BBC Urdu.

Naqvi said that the call they received on the 15 police helpline was anonymous which stated that a woman was being heckled by a crowd wearing a shirt that had calligraphy on it and it has deeply hurt the sentiments of the people. She went on to detail the process of tackling the mob while making sure the woman remained safe. When asked why the woman was forced to apologize and how she is being criticised for being involved in the apology despite her display of courage, Sheharbano replied that she fulfilled her role as a first respondent to the situation where her duty was to ensure the safety of the person who is being accused as soon as possible. She stated that policy-related matters are above her pay scale, implying that the decision was not hers but from higher-ups of the department.

ASP Sheharbano mentioned that it was “not orchestrated” the woman was transported to a safer location where the dialogue between the stakeholders ensued and the video was shot. The interviewer asked if she was heard saying that the woman was apologising in that video. To this, she replied that it was a result of widespread defamation that could have jeopardised the woman’s security in the longer run.

ASP Sheharbano Naqvi, who rescued a terrorised woman from a charged mob, is now being nominated for the highest gallantry award- the Quaid-e-Azam Police Medal.

In a viral video circulating online, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Shehrbano was seen trying to calm an angry crowd of Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) supporters who were allegedly angry with a woman in a small restaurant. The woman was wearing a dress with Arabic letters printed on it. Without knowing what the letters meant, men around her got offended and accused her of blasphemy by wearing Quranic Ayats. ASP Shehrbano reached in time and saved the woman from the crowd.

She was praised on social media for defusing the situation in a controlled manner.

However, it is not the first time ASP Sheharbano has been praised for doing the right. In November last year, she became the face of a soft image of the Punjab Police when she, along with the IG Punjab Dr Usman Anwar, inaugurated a one-of-a-kind Pet Park in Lahore.

She also made headlines for her compassion towards sniffer dogs of the police department who are now adopted after retirement instead of being euthanized.
