    Shah Mahmood Qureshi’s nomination papers approved from Sindh’s Umarkot  

    The nomination papers of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) vice president Shah Mahmood Qureshi were approved on Friday, enabling him to contest general elections on February 8.

    An election tribunal approved the nomination papers of the PTI senior leader for the NA-214 constituency in Sindh’s Umarkot city. Shah Mahmood Qureshi’s son Zain Qureshi’s nomination papers were also approved from the same constituency.

    Numerous prominent political figures, such as Awami Muslim League (AML) chief Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, Balochistan National Party (BNP) head Akhtar Mengal, and Firdous Shamim Naqvi, have successfully obtained relief from election tribunals, as their nomination papers have been approved for the upcoming general elections scheduled for February 8, 2024.

    Various election tribunals have given their approval to the nomination papers of Sheikh Rashid, Akhtar Mengal, and PML-Zia chief Ijazul Haq and allowed them to take part in the forthcoming general election, set to take place on February 8, 2024.

    Sheikh Rashid’s nomination papers were approved from NA-56 and NA-57 constituencies while Mengal’s nomination papers were accepted from NA-264 Quetta.

    A tribunal consisting of Justice Hashim Khan Kakar and Justice Amir Nawaz Rana has overturned the returning officer’s decision to reject Mengal’s nomination papers due to the possession of a Dubai work permit (Aqama). The leader of BNP contested the rejection of his nomination papers with the representation of his counsel, Advocate Sajid Tareen.

    On the other hand, a tribunal approved the nomination papers of PML-Zia’s chief, Ijazul Haq, and allowed him to contest the election from NA-55.

    Sheikh Rashid’s bail gets extended

    An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Rawalpindi has granted an extension to the interim bail of former federal minister Sheikh Rashid in connection with 10 cases related to the May 9 riots.

    The bail has now been extended until December 9, following a hearing presided over by ATC Judge Malik Ejaz Asif.

    During the proceedings, the court adjourned the hearing at the request of the public prosecutor, instructing both sides to present their arguments in the upcoming session.

    Addressing the court, Rashid asserted that although there are a dozen cases against him related to the May 9 riots, he was not personally present at any of the locations in question.

    After the hearing, while speaking to the media, Rashid urged those responsible to focus on the country’s declining economic conditions and added that the people are concerned with inflation and not elections.

    Referring to PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif’s return, the Awami Muslim League (AML) leader said that elections are “imminent”.

    On election day, people roaming in Murree “will face the music,” he said.

    President Awami Muslim League and PTI’s ally Sheikh Rashid Ahmed on Friday made a comeback on TV in an interview with anchorperson Muneeb Farooq. 

    When asked about his long absence and reported arrest, Sheikh Rashid said that he had gone for a “40-day chilla” just like a tableegi mission where he was studying Quran. Sheikh said it was hard but he is thankful to the Almighty that he got this opportunity. Sheikh Rashid said he did not even get a chance to inform his family about it. “No one harmed me, everyone cooperated with me on this chilla,” added Rashid.

    Sheikh Rashid talked about his relations with the armed forces of Pakistan. He attributed his political career to General Akhtar Abdur Rehman. “I will always be proud to call myself a spokesperson of the army.” He said he had even advised Imran Khan to work in close coordination with them. 

    Rashid recalled that when the MQM talked to him during the no-confidence motion, he realised then that “PTI government is over”. However, he did maintain that he was part of the cabinet and was one of the signatories of the National Security Council (NSC) on the cipher. 

    Answering a question regarding Imran’s criticism of the army, Rashid said that he personally believes that nobody should criticise army officers and military institutions like that. Rashid said that he had condemned the May 9 violence but “it was not highlighted much”.

    Rashid reiterated that institutions are imperative for Pakistan and the biggest mistake of the PTI government was to criticise the army and hampering the appointment of Army Chief General Asim Munir. He has deduced from his experience that politicians should not meddle in the affairs of the army — their postings and transfers. Sheikh said that Imran Khan is a “stubborn” politician.

    Sheikh Rashid appeared on TV a day after the Rawalpindi bench of the Lahore High Court ordered the police to recover him by October 26. He was allegedly picked up from his residence in Rawalpindi on September 17 according to his lawyer.

    ‘Last chance’ given by Lahore High Court to recover Sheikh Rasheed

    Awami Muslim League leader and former federal interior minister, Sheikh Rasheed, was arrested from his house in Rawalpindi last month. On Thursday, the Lahore High Court gave the police one more week to find him.

    At today’s hearing, RPO Rawalpindi Syed Khurram Ali and CPO Rawalpindi Khalid Hamdani appeared before the court, seeking more time for recovering Sheikh Rasheed.

    “How much more time do you need for recovery, what have you done so far,” the court asked the cops. The RPO Rawalpindi said the officers responsible for the arrest were not present in the area on that day.

    “We need a bit more time for recovery,’ the RPO informed the court.

    “We are giving you a week’s time as the last chance to recover Sheikh Rasheed else the court will pass an order with a warning,” was the reply.

    The hearing was then adjourned until October 27.
