Kabhi apnay personal milestone kay liye nahi khella: Babar Azam

Babar Azam became the fastest Pakistani batsman to reach 12000 runs in international cricket during the first One-Day International (ODI) against New Zealand on Thursday at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.

When asked about his achievement and how excited he was, Babar Azam humbly replied that he has never focused on individual milestones.

“I have never focused on individual milestones. My focus has always been to deliver for the team and give such performances that win matches for my team. When you play with that goal, you achieve milestones along the way,” the skipper said.

Stating that a player’s aim should always be to give impactful performances, Azam credited the milestones as, “byproducts of that mentality.”

The captain of the team emphasized that he does not have any personal ambitions. “What I want is to strive for the country’s success. I have never focused on achieving one record or the other. These things come with performance. But my main aim has always been to win the matches and tournaments for the country and make my performance count,” he added.

When asked about Fakhar Zaman’s compliments on his and Mohammad Rizwan’s accomplishments for Pakistan, Azam responded that Zaman’s words were indicative of genuine team camaraderie.

“What Fakhar has said is a reflection of our team culture. We back and encourage each other. We spend time with each other a lot more than we do with our families and to become a well-bonded unit, it is important to stand by your teammates and enjoy each other’s success. We back each other in an effort to get the best results for the team and for the country,” he said.

The second ODI between Pakistan and New Zealand will take place on Saturday at Pindi Cricket Stadium.

  • Kings vs Zalmi: stats you need to know

Rawalpindi cricket ground will host its first match of HBL PSL 8 on Wednesday, between rivals Peshawar Zalmi and Karachi Kings. Both teams are currently placed at the bottom of the points table.

Babar Azam, top run scorer for Zalmi and the captain of the team, was previously a core member of Karachi Kings and leading the team in the last season. But the team did not perform well under his captaincy and lost all the important matches of PSL 7.

Mohammad Amir, Karachi Kings’ frontline pace bowler, has been overtly critical of Babar Azam in several live televsion shows and on micro-blogging site Twitter. Even Imad Wasim, skipper of Karachi Kings, took a dig at Azam’s batting and leadership skills without being too vocal.

The verbal gymnastics before the start of this PSL season renders the match between KAR and PES all the more interesting.

It is too early to gauge their current position in the table. Ideally, both teams would want to earn two crucial points to stabilise their standing. Historically, when it comes to their head-to-head in the last five meetings, Zalmi have enjoyed an upper hand while winning all five encounters between the two.

The Imad Wasim-led Karachi Kings will aim to overcome their failures and try to obtain a result in their favour in the much-awaited clash.

Experts says that Peshawar Zalmi will be the favourite of today’s match but Imad led Kings will also fight for  crucial points to strengthen their place.

‘More excited than nervous’: Babar Azam on the final tomorrow

Pakistan skipper Babar Azam addressed a pre-match conference ahead of the T20 World Cup final between Pakistan and England scheduled to be played on Sunday.

“We lost the first two matches, [but] the way we came back the last four matches, we’ve performed very well,” Azam said at his pre-match press conference.
“I’m more excited than nervous … there is pressure, no doubt. But it can only be suppressed with confidence and belief in ourselves. And for good results, it is important that one must do so.”

Acknowledging that England is a competitive team, Babar cited India’s 10-wicket thrashing at their hands as proof of their aggressive strategy.

“Our strategy is to stick to our plan and use our pace attack as our strength to win the final. Utilising the powerplay to grab as many wickets will be essential for the match,” he stated.

The T20 World Cup final between Pakistan and England is set to be played at Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), Australia on November 13 (Sunday).
