Ben Stokes out of T20 World Cup 2024

England all-rounder Ben Stokes will miss this year’s Twenty20 World Cup as he is unavailable for selection.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has said in a statement that Stokes wants to focus on regaining his fitness ahead of this summer’s Test matches. Stokes wants to be fully fit to bowl for the upcoming Test series against West Indies and Sri Lanka.

In a statement, Stokes said, “I am working hard and focusing on building up my bowling fitness to play a full role as an all-rounder in all formats of cricket. Opting out of the IPL and the World Cup will hopefully be a sacrifice that will allow me to become the all-rounder that I want to be in the near future.”

Stokes added, “The recent Test tour of India highlighted how far behind I was from a bowling perspective after my knee surgery and not bowling for 9 months.”

England are the current T20 World Cup champions, winning their second title in Australia in 2022.

‘Doors are open’ for Ben Stokes, says England coach Mathew Mott

English All-Rounder Ben Stokes is likely to return to England’s One Day International (ODI) Team to play for the 2023 World Cup. The 31-years-old England Test captain took retirement from ODIs last summer to manage his workload, however, his decision was criticized by many. Stokes took his team to the final and won the title of men’s T20 World Cup.

The “door is open” for Ben Stokes to come out of 50-over retirement and play at the World Cup in India later this year, England coach Matthew Mott has said.

Mott said England is happy to wait on a decision.

“The door is always open for a player of that quality but we are also very aware that his main focus is red-ball cricket as the captain,” Mott said, speaking before England’s three-match ODI series against South Africa begins on Friday.

England is currently building its team for defending its title. The World Cup will be played in October and November by which time England will not have played a Test for more than two months.

Ben Stokes was the man of the match in the 2019 World Cup when England won the coveted trophy for the first time after a dramatic super over against New Zealand.

The captain of England cricket team Ben Stokes has announced to donate his match fee for the three-match series against Pakistan.

In his entire statement, the England Test captain said: “It is great to be in Pakistan for the first time for this historic series. To be back here after 17 years as a Test side is very exciting. There is a sense of responsibility amongst the playing and support group and to be there is special.”
“The floods that devastated Pakistan earlier this year were very sad to see and have had a significant impact on the country and the people,” he added.

England is currently on Pakistan’s tour for a test series. This is the first time in 17 years that England have toured Pakistan and the three-match series will be a part of the World Test Championship.

‘England will miss him,’ Twitter is sad over Ben Stokes’ sudden ODI retirement

England cricket team all-rounder Ben Stokes announced his shocking retirement from One-Day International (ODI) cricket on Monday citing the “unsustainable” rigour of playing all three formats of the game.

Stokes was recently appointed as the captain of the England Men’s Test side.

Today’s (Tuesday) match against South Africa at his home ground will be Stokes’ last ODI. However, he will continue to play Twenty20 Internationals and Test cricket.

The 31-year-old said, “This has been an incredibly tough decision to make. I have loved every minute of playing with my mates for England. Hard as this decision was to come, it’s not as hard as dealing with the fact I can’t give my teammates 100% of myself in this format anymore. The England shirt deserves nothing less from anyone who wears it.”

Ben Stokes has not played a T20 international for 16 months. He missed the World Cup last autumn while he was taking a break from the game to prioritise his mental health.

Following the news, cricket fans couldn’t hold themselves from expressing their sadness over Stokes’ retirement while some of his fans and fellow cricketers wished him luck.

Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh, England’s Ben Stokes and West Indian Carlos Brathwaite were all praises for batter Asif Ali after he led Pakistan to victory in the closely fought match against Afghanistan in the Super 12 stage of the T20 World Cup.

Taking to Twitter, Singh said: “Asif Ali showed a lot of confidence by refusing the single on the last ball and finishing it in style by hitting those four big sixes in the next over.”

    “Clean and powerful hitter.”

England’s pacer Stokes, who is also a power hitter, couldn’t stop himself from praising the Pakistani batter.

    “Sensational Asif Ali,” wrote Brathwaite.

Asif smashed four sixes in the penultimate over to help Pakistan achieve a hard-fought five-wicket win over the Afghan side.

With Pakistan needing 24 runs off the final two overs, Asif lifted paceman Karim Janat’s first, third, fifth, and sixth balls over the boundary to help Pakistan overhaul a tricky 148-run target.

Babar Azam also took to his social media and praised the team for a combined team effort. While the skipper also lauded Asif for “the awesome finish” from him and called his performance “cherry on the top”.

Afghanistan scored a fighting 147-6 in their 20 overs with Gulbadin Naib and skipper Mohammad Nabi each scoring 35. With Asif’s help, Pakistan finished the match in the 19th over.

Nine uncapped players included in England’s revised squad for Pakistan ODIs

England’s revised squad announced to play Pakistan in a three-match One-Day International (ODI) series after a Covid-19 outbreak led to the formation of a new playing eleven. Nine uncapped players have been included in England’s squad.

Squad: Ben Stokes (c), Jake Ball, Danny Briggs, Brydon Carse, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Lewis Gregory, Tom Helm, Will Jacks, Dan Lawrence, Saqib Mahmood, Dawid Malan, Craig Overton, Matt Parkinson, David Payne, Phil Salt, John Simpson (wk), James Vince

“It’s a great opportunity to play on the biggest stage, and for most of the players selected it’s not necessarily something they would have been expecting 24 hours ago,” managing director of England men’s cricket, Ashley Giles, said.

“It’s an exciting group of players, with some young talent and some players who have impressed at a domestic level over a long period of time. We’re in unprecedented territory, in terms of replacing an entire squad and management team, and I’m very proud of how everyone has come together in order to get it done – both those within the ECB and from the county game.

“Ben hasn’t captained our ODI side before so it’s a huge honour for him. We all wish him well and it’s a role I’m sure he’ll thrive in. I’d like to also put on record the thanks of the ECB to the PCB for their support and understanding during this time,” Giles added.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Tuesday expressed satisfaction in a press release over the “assurances and guarantees” given by the England Cricket Board (ECB) over existing protocols in place for the Pakistan cricket team and support staff’s safety.

The PCB responded to seven members of the England cricket team testing positive for coronavirus. Three players and four members of the support staff tested positive for the infection.

“Pakistan Cricket Board has been in close contact with the England and Wales Cricket Board regarding concerns about the health and safety of its players since the news of Covid-19 outbreak in the England camp,” said the board in a statement.

“The PCB is satisfied by the assurances and guarantees provided by the ECB on behalf of its medical panel,” said the PCB.

England ODI squad forced to self-isolate after seven positive Covid-19 cases

England’s white-ball squads have been forced to self-isolate two days before the start of their One-Day Internationals (ODI) series against Pakistan following seven positive Covid-19 tests among the team’s players and management.

Taking to Twitter, senior sports journalist Faizan Lakhani also shared the news about the positive cases in the white-ball squads of the hosts.

As per details, three players and four members of management have tested positive for Covid. “In collaboration with Public Health England, Public Health Wales and Bristol Local Health Authority, those impacted will now observe a period of self-isolation from July 4 following the UK Government’s protocol on quarantine,” an English Cricket Board (ECB) statement said.

“The remaining members of the party have been deemed close contacts and will also isolate.”

The ECB confirmed that the limited-overs series against Pakistan will go ahead as planned, with Ben Stokes due to return to international duty ahead of schedule and captain the squad.

ECB’s chief executive Tom Harrison, said: ”We have been mindful that the emergence of the Delta variant, along with our move away from the stringent enforcement of biosecure environments, could increase the chances of an outbreak. We made a strategic choice to try to adapt protocols, in order to support the overall wellbeing of our players and management staff who have spent much of the last 14 months living in very restricted conditions.”

“Overnight we have worked swiftly to identify a new squad, and we are grateful to Ben Stokes who will return to England duties to captain. We also recognise the impact this news will have on our first-class counties and their men’s playing squads and thank them, along with our partners Sky and Royal London, for their ongoing support in dealing with this pandemic.”

A lot of players taking part in the ongoing County Championship have already been informed to report for national duty. They will be allowed to join the squad and the bio-secure bubble after negative Covid-19 Tests.

The official announcement of the new squad is expected to be made at 3pm Pakistan Standard Time.
