Tareen & sugar crisis: ‘Imran feeling betrayed, thinking he bet on the wrong horse’

With the damning investigation report on the recent sugar crisis making headlines and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) senior leader Jahangir Khan Tareen being named as one of the people who allegedly benefited from the economic disaster, Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan, to whom Tareen has always been more than just a colleague, is feeling betrayed, The News has reported.

Earlier this year, following the shortage of wheat flour in the country and the subsequent price hike, sugar had also gone missing from the market. Taking notice of the situation, the premier had formed a committee to find out those responsible for the crises.

On Saturday, the inquiry report on sugar crisis had named PTI bigwig Tareen, Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid’s (PML-Q) Moonis Elahi and a relative of then minister for national food security Makhdoom Khusro Bakhtiar as the beneficiaries of the price hike.

On Sunday, PM Imran had said that he was waiting for the detailed forensic reports, slated to come out on April 25, before taking any action against those responsible and on Monday he had reshuffled the federal cabinet which saw Bakhtiar being replaced. Tareen was also removed from the Agriculture Task Force among other changes.

Soon after the reshuffle, reports claimed that the premier was “feeling betrayed by once his closest aide Tareen”, who, despite having been disqualified by the apex court, was given the informal role of deputy PM to help the PTI government deliver.

“Tareen was given immense power, informally, to reform the agriculture sector, his choice men were appointed in the cabinet as well as in the bureaucracy both in the Centre and Punjab. But, it all ended up not only in failures but caused major scandals of wheat and sugar,” the report said and further claimed that Tareen had “thoroughly disappointed Imran, who now thinks that he had bet on a wrong horse”.

The latest reshuffle in the cabinet and bureaucracy, these report said, was a clear message for all and sundry both within the PTI and in the government that Tareen was out and so was his influence. “With these changes, the PTI Jahangir Tareen group meets its end.”

It also said that what happened on Monday was not the climax and “a lot will happen after April 25 when the Sugar Commission will submit its report on how the sugar mafia operates”.

“There will be criminal proceedings, possible arrests and institutional actions by [the] FBR [Federal Board of Revenue], SECP [Securities & Exchange Commission of Pakistan] etc,” it added.

  • Meray Paas Tum Ho’s most emotional episode yet as Bewafa turns to atonement

Ouch. Danish is still hurting but he’s definitely not going to take Mehwish back. That phone call between the two makes it evidently clear. Or does it?

The episode starts with Mehwish (Ayeza Khan) trying to get her friends to help her out but they are initially averse to the idea of doing so because she has committed the ultimate sin – betraying their friend. She goes to meet Hania (Hira Mani) trying to get help from her, and also trying to figure out what Hania’s relationship is with Danish (Humayun Saeed) and Mehwish’s son Rumi. It is obvious that Mehwish’s main goal is now to get back with Danish and she tries her best to talk to the people who know him to find out where his head is at, before she calls him herself.

Hania also feels for Mehwish as Mehwish tells her about what’s happened

The phone call is painful. Humayun Saeed is such a perfect actor that you can actually feel the pain in his voice as he tells his ex-wife how much he used to miss her. And how they can never get back together.

Danish, stone-faced as he listens to Mehwish on the phone

But the phone call that makes everyone’s heart tug is the one between Mehwish and her son Rumi. He couldn’t sleep without her and one feels so strongly for the child, and also despises Mehwish in that moment; not for following what she wanted and leaving Danish, but for not considering her child’s feelings as well. She tries to make amends with him and as any child, Rumi also cannot help but become warm with Mehwish – she is after all his mother. But when he tells her how his father used to miss her by calling her name, forgetting she wasn’t there, in that moment, you cannot help but feel that Mehwish never deserves redemption. As she cries, you become conflicted. People make mistakes.

Rumi tells his mother how his father reacted after she left him

But as Danish explains to his son later, it wasn’t a mistake. It was a sin. And therefore, cannot be redeemed. He does tell his friend that he’s forgiven her, “Kehdo uska maaf kar dia,” Danish tells his friend, “Khuda ki qasm maaf kar dia,” but as he talks to Rumi he is a little more honest, saying, “jis din mai usko bhool jaonga tou mil jaye gi usko maafi”

Rumi and Danish share a heartfelt conversation, showing they’re a team

It’s an emotional episode because you see Danish struggle. He still loves her and it’s quite possible he always will. And he knows that just one word, and he can have her back. Possibly, more in love with him than he was with her. Her life has turned upside down. She’s gotten a job and is living in a women’s hostel. Right now, Danish has everything that she wants. She just doesn’t have Danish.

Mehwish, trying to atone for her sins, goes to a mazar

Do you feel for her? Yes, you do and Ayeza Khan does an absolutely fantastic job as the arrogant woman who thwarts love and then realizes the incredibly huge mistake she’s made. The acting is what does it. There’s no way you cannot feel, even a little, for her. Her fall from ‘greatness’ is that big. And you wonder that if the tables had turned and this was a husband who had cheated, the wife would most likely take him back. There are many Pakistani dramas that already have that ‘happy ending’. So when she goes to a mazar, remembers her husband who was good and loving, she tries to atone for her sins. And maybe, she can have it. Everyone sins, everyone makes mistakes. Just because she’s a woman, doesn’t mean she doesn’t get a second chance.

Hania’s expression when Danish says he wants to marry her

But according to the teaser for the next episode, it does. Danish is seen asking Hania to marry him, or rather asking someone else in front of Hania, if Hania will marry him. Mehwish ends up in the hospital and he rushes to find out what’s happened. Love is unfortunately love. It doesn’t die, even if you’re side-lined, betrayed or even when you come back.

Passive-Aggressive Danish sweeps one of the fastest episodes in Pak history

You won’t be able to tell that 40 minutes went by in one of the fastest episodes of Meray Pass Tum Ho. Just 12 episodes in, the show is bound to be one of the biggest blockbusters in Pakistani drama history.

Mehwish (Ayeza Khan) has decided to leave her son and husband for loaded Shehwar (Adnan Siddiqui). Husband Danish (Humayun Saeed) relents and tells her that she can go and as predicted serves her with divorce papers in this episode.

    Danish gives Mehwish a divorce

She doesn’t flinch when he gives them to her but there is a flicker – of shock or happiness, one can’t be certain – but she is definitely taken by surprise when he hands them to her.

One can’t be sure in the beginning of the episode of Danish’s motives. He brings a cake to celebrate his wedding anniversary with Mehwish, which seems like a really weird and creepy thing to do since she’s leaving him for another man.

Making Mehwish cut a wedding anniversary cake with him

The weirdness of it freaks Mehwish out too and she tell Shehwar to come over and get her – eight hours before she actually has to leave. We start to see cracks in Danish’s cool demeanour as he starts passing comments on his marriage with Mehwish – and we finally see that he really is incredibly angry and just very good at hiding it.

Mehwish on the other hand, couldn’t care less and one loses a little respect for her in this episode. When Danish hands her her phone, she finds that the phone is covered in Danish’s blood – blood from an accident he had had the same night. She ignores it – and checks for Shehwar’s message. Ouch.

Mehwish realizing Danish’s blood is on her hands

Her soon-to-be ex-husband and father of your child is bleeding and she couldn’t care less. Seems like a whole new Mehwish. Ayeza Khan had warned her fans not to watch this episode since they would hate her at the end of it. Don’t hate her but definitely don’t like her anymore.

Danish’s biting responses and out of the blue reactions make this episode a truly riveting watch. Humayun Saeed has done it again, proving he is the best actor in the industry. He succeeds in making everyone watching feel for him and also feel incredibly uncomfortable watching him behave and react so strangely. He offers his cheating wife and her lover tea and asks them to sit in his house- until he tells Mehwish to leave with Shehwar.

Danish made Shehwar and Mehwish chai after he gave Mehwish permission to call Shehwar over to take her

When walking them to the door, he says to Shehwar that, “waisey tou bohat intelligent businessman lagte hain aap, lekin yahan bhao karte huye hairaan kardia aapne mujhe. Is do takay ki larki kay liye aap mujhe 50 million dey rahe thay…
    and that’s it.

Danish telling Shehwar that Mehwish is a do take ki aurat

Mehwish hears it and realizes that that’s the moment she truly lost her husband – not when she told him she wanted to leave, not when he found out that she had an affair, not when he gave her divorce papers.

Mehwish realizes she’s lost her husband forever

She realizes that she’s lost the man who truly loved her when she’s walking out of her house and he reveals how he truly feels, you can tell – she has a flicker of admiration and fear for him. Admiration that he finally, finally stood up for himself and fear because now she knows that she can never come back.
