    Heatwave in India kills 33, including election officials

    Thirty-three people, including election officials on duty, died of suspected heatstroke in three major Indian states on Friday, including Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Odisha.

    Fourteen people died in Bihar on Thursday, including 10 people involved in organising the seven-phase national elections that are currently underway. Many election officials are usually required to stand on duty all day, many times outdoors.

    Parts of Bihar are voting in the final round of polling on Saturday as well.

    In Uttar Pradesh, nine election personnel, including security persons, died on Friday, government officials said.

    Ten deaths were reported from the government hospital in Odisha on Thursday, authorities said, prompting government to advise against outdoor activities between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm local time when temperatures heighten.

    Three people died of suspected heatstroke in Jharkhand state, neighbouring Bihar.

    India has been experiencing a record hot summer. A locality of the capital Delhi recorded the country’s highest-ever temperature at 52.9°C this week.

    While temperatures in north-western and central India are expected to fall in the coming days, the prevailing heatwave over eastern India is likely to continue for two days, according to India’s Meteorological Department (IMD), which declares a heatwave when the temperature is 4.5°C to 6.4°C higher than normal.

    The last phase of voting is scheduled to be held on Saturday and votes will be in counted on Tuesday.

    However, the deadly heatwave in the South Asian region is expected to continue until Saturday.

    Assailants reveal sinister motive of firing at Salman Khan’s home

    The Mumbai Police has finished their interrogation of the people who shot at Bollywood star Salman Khan’s house.

    According to reports from Indian media, the two gunmen who fired at Salman Khan’s house in Mumbai’s Bandra area were caught in Bhoj, Gujarat. Both of them are from Bihar area in Gujarat state.

    Unit 9 of India’s Crime Branch completed the investigation and gave the report to the local court, revealing that the gunmen wanted to kill the Bollywood superstar. After opening fire, they threw their guns into the Surat river.

    Now, the police want the court to keep the two suspects for 14 days to find out who planned the attack. Earlier, the suspects were already with the police for nine days.

    The suspects told the police they shot at Salman Khan’s house because gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, who’s in jail, paid them to do it.
    The police told the media the suspects didn’t want to hurt Salman Khan or his family, but to scare people.

    Indian photographer shot dead after camera battery ran out at birthday party

    A photographer in Bihar, India, has been allegedly shot dead by the hosts of a birthday party after his camera battery got drained.

    Sushil Sahni was killed at the party of the daughter of the suspect, who was reportedly dissatisfied with the photographer’s service when his camera’s battery ran out.

    Sushil had returned to his house to charge his battery but the alleged murderer upon not finding him in the party contacted him and forcefully asked him to come back to the party after charging the battery.

    Upon Sushil’s return, a scuffle broke out between the two, and in a fit of rage, the party owner put a pistol in Sushil’s mouth and fired. The suspect then took the victim to the gate of the hospital and fled the spot, reports Indian media.

    The suspect has reportedly been involved in the illegal liquor business and the police is making attempts to find him.

    A mother in India risked her life to save her child from getting hit by a train. The video of the incident has gone viral.

    According to Indian media, the incident happened in the state of Bihar where the mother risked her life to save her infant last week.

    On Saturday, the woman and her children reached Bihar’s Barh Railway Station to board the Vikramshila Express to Delhi along with their family. A large group began to board the train and in a rush to get on, all three were pushed off the platform and fell on the tracks.

    In the video, it can be seen that the mother is lying on the track on top of the child and the train passed over her, luckily not hitting her.

    After the train passed, people picked up the woman and the child and made them sit on the platform.

    A 17-year-old male student studying in Grade 12 in Bihar, India, fainted after seeing an examination hall full of 500 girls.

    According to Indian news outlets, the student, Shankar, entered the exam center and started writing. However, Shankar got nervous and fainted. He also suffered a fracture in his arm after falling from his chair.

    Shankar has said that he was nervous because he was the only boy in the examination room while the remaining 500 were female students.

    He said that he felt nervous and fainted at the thought of finishing the exam as the lone male among hundreds of female students.

    An 85-year-old retired postman from the northern Indian state of Bihar received his first dose on February 13 at a local clinic, and he hasn’t stopped since.

    In an interview with New York Times, he said, “I felt that it was helping my general health. My backache has improved, my general weakness improved, and my appetite improved. I still want more.”

    Mandal used his national identity and his mobile number card for 9 shots out of 12. After that, he used his voting card and the mobile numbers of his wife and his friends.

    He admitted that each time he registered for a new jab he told the staff lie that he had not received any dose before.

    However, his claim has not yet been confirmed but media reports suggested that Bihar’s vaccination numbers are likely inaccurate. The manual registration process might be the cause of this.

    According to the newspaper, there is no indication that the immune system with 12 shots brings any real benefits.

    Court orders ‘rapist’ to wash women’s clothes for six months

    A man in Bihar, India, accused of attempted rape was granted bail on the condition that he will wash and iron the clothes of all women in his village for six months.

    As per reports, the 20-year-old Lalan Kumar will have to buy detergent and other products to provide six months of free laundry services to about 2,000 women in the village of Majhor, a court said on Wednesday.

    Kumar, who washes clothes for a living, was detained in April on charges including attempted rape, Santosh Kumar Singh, a police officer, said.

    No date has been set for his trial.

    “All the women in the village are happy with the court decision,” Nasima Khatoon, the village head, said.

    “It is historic. It will boost respect for women and help to protect the dignity,” added Khatoon, one of the villagers who will monitor Kumar.

    Women in the village said the order had made a positive effect by making crime against women a subject of discussion in their community.

    A man in India’s Bihar died after a snake bit him when he was trying to tie rakhi on it while celebrating Raksha Bandhan.

    Raksha Bandhan is celebrated in Hinduism to honour the bond of brother and sister, in which the sister ties Rakhi on her brother’s wrist.

    As per reports, the man, Manmohan was getting his sisters to tie rakhi to a pair of snakes but one of the snakes bit him.

    The video shows the 25-year-old man holding the snakes and trying to tie a rakhi on them.

    Manmohan, who was a snake charmer, was bit by one snake after which he was taken to a nearby hospital but he could not survive.

    Manmohan was bit when he tried to put ‘tika’ on one of the snakes, the other crawled towards him and bit his foot.

    After the incident, he checked his foot and seemed to be doing fine as he continued his activities. Manmohan was later rushed to a hospital where he was declared dead.

    The 25-year-old used to catch snakes and treat their wounds for more than a decade. Manmohan also used to treat people in his village who suffered from snakebites.

    Eight-year-old Indian girl killed in ‘human sacrifice’ ritual, four held: police

    An eight-year-old girl was reportedly murdered as part of a human sacrifice ritual planned by a local mystic in India’s Bihar, Hindustan Times reported.

    The victim was a third grade student who went missing on August 4. A day later, her mutilated body was found on the banks of Ganga River.

    The police detained four people and charged them with kidnapping and murder under the Indian Penal Code.

    Superintendent JJ Reddy told the media that self-proclaimed mystic Parvez Alam had told a local villager, Dilip Kumar Choudhary, that he had to sacrifice a girl so that his pregnant wife would not lose her baby.

    Choudhary further informed that Alam had four children and wanted a fifth. Alam had asked him to bring the eye of a 10-year-old boy or girl so he could prepare an amulet.

    Choudhary told the police that he was involved in the crime because Alam provoked him.

    The other two suspects, Tanvir Alam and Dasrath Kumar, allegedly helped Alam in the crime, the police reported.

    Initial police reports suggest that Choudhary, Tanvir and Dasrath had abducted the girl when she was coming back home after delivering lunch to her father, who is a fisherman.

    The three men dragged the girl inside a brick kiln, choked her and extracted out her right eye.

    The girl’s body also had wounds suspected of rape.

    After the forensic examination of the girl’s clothes and pendant, the medical board denied the possibility of rape, informed SP Reddy.

    Initially, the police arrested 12 people but all were freed after an inquiry. Alam was arrested from his home after Choudhary confessed to the crime.

    The girl’s mother and father, however, stated that the police have “cooked” up a story. They said that their daughter was sexually assaulted before being murdered

  • VIDEO: Man gets stuck behind ATM machine during theft

    A drunk thief in India’s Tamil Nadu got stuck behind an automated teller machine (ATM) while he was trying to steal money.

    The police arrested the thief identified as Upendra Roy. The police first rescued the thief and then detained him. 

     As per reports, Roy in his drunk state, removed the plywood on the wall behind the ATM and managed to reach the back of the machine.

    Nearby residents informed the authorities when they heard strange sounds coming from the ATM. The police reached the spot and arrested the thief.
