  • BTS’ Suga ‘reflecting’ on disappointing fans with drunk e-scooter incident

BTS’ Suga ‘reflecting’ on disappointing fans with drunk e-scooter incident

A member of K-pop mega group BTS arrived at a South Korean police station Friday for questioning, telling reporters he was “very sorry” for driving an electric scooter while drunk.

Suga, 31, was found by police lying on the ground next to his e-scooter late at night on August 6, with a blood alcohol level well over the legal limit.

Wearing a black suit, Suga bowed in front of journalists outside the police station in Seoul’s fashionable Yongsan district.

“I’m sorry, I’m very sorry. I sincerely reflect on the fact I caused disappointment to many fans and people. I will cooperate fully with the investigation. I am sorry again,” he said before entering the station.

He did not answer reporters’ questions on the details of the case.

The singer, currently performing mandatory military duties as a social service agent, has already revoked his driving licence and been fined.

But he still needs to answer police questions as officers said he was too drunk to respond at the time of the incident.

Suga has admitted to driving drunk and apologised to fans on social media.

Experts said the punishment would depend on what kind of e-scooter he was driving.

If he was riding a sophisticated e-scooter rather than a simple kick-board, Suga “could be punished for violating the Road Traffic Act”, lawyer Cha Hong-soon said.

  • South Korea names K-pop group NewJeans tourism ambassadors

South Korea names K-pop group NewJeans tourism ambassadors

South Korea on Thursday appointed K-pop girl band NewJeans “honorary ambassadors” as part of a drive to promote tourism, joining a long list of Korean celebrities to take up the role.

South Korea has seen tourism figures recover to nearly pre-pandemic levels this year, with around a third of visitors citing K-pop or K-drama — the so-called “Hallyu” or Korean wave — as a major motive for travelling to the East Asian country.

“We are very happy to be appointed as an ambassador to promote South Korean tourism today,” band member Minji said, adding it would be a “great joy” for the supergroup to promote their country’s charms.

Tourist arrivals are at “about 90 percent of pre-pandemic levels,” said culture minister Yu In-chon.

“With NewJeans as tourism ambassadors, I expect even more people from all over the world to visit Korea,” he added.

The group will serve as ambassadors with no actual diplomatic responsibilities for a year, succeeding previous representatives such as “Squid Game” star and Emmy-winner Lee Jung-jae and K-pop megastars BTS.

Members of the band shared their personal recommendations for visitors, including eating “gimbap dipped in tteokbokki sauce” and taking “a photo a day”, which is an “unspoken rule among young Korean generations”.

Haerin said she recommended tourists to visit a hanok — or traditional Korean house — while Hanni urged visitors to embrace Korean cuisine.

“You have to eat Korean food when you come to Korea, and since it’s summer and the weather is hot, if you eat food like samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup) or mul-naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodles), you’ll be able to enjoy it a lot,” she said.

More than 11 million tourists visited South Korea last year, a 245 percent increase compared to 2022, when some pandemic restrictions were still in force.

Chinese and Japanese tourists made up the majority of the visitors.

NewJeans recently held their first fan meet at the Tokyo Dome, less than two years after their debut — the fastest Tokyo Dome debut for any foreign artist. Tickets were sold out in minutes.

The group’s Japanese debut single “Supernatural” sold over a million copies as of Thursday, marking their fifth million-seller.

The seven members of the world’s most popular boy band have been performing their service — which South Korea requires of all men under 30, due to tensions with the nuclear-armed North — with the K-pop juggernaut on a self-described “hiatus” since 2022.
Jin emerged from the gates of his army base in South Korea’s northern Yeoncheon county where he was met by fellow bandmates J-hope, V, RM, Jungkook and Jimin.

Yeoncheon county put up its own banner that read: “BTS Jin, The last year and a half was a joy for us. Yeoncheon will not forget you!”

Fans had been urged not to attend, and there were only a couple of admirers present early Wednesday outside the base.
BTS’s agency HYBE announced Jin’s discharge on Weverse — a superfan social media platform — earlier this week.
“We are excited to bring you the news of Jin’s upcoming military discharge,” it said.
It also “strongly advised” fans to “refrain from the visiting site” citing safety concerts, and added that there would be no special events planned.
