ICC meeting on Champions Trophy postponed again

A crucial International Cricket Council (ICC) Board meeting, scheduled for Saturday, to decide on the fate of the hosting of the Champions Trophy has been postponed again.

Yesterday’s ICC board meeting on the venue of the Champions Trophy could not be decided, after which the meeting was postponed until today.

However, ICC sources now say that the Board meeting will not be held today. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is standing by its stance, while the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has asked for more time after Pakistan’s refusal to buckle to pressure.

According to Geo, the ICC board meeting is likely to be held in the next 48 hours, while the term of ICC Chairman Greg Barclay is also likely to be extended by one month.

ICC Chairman Greg Barclay’s term was scheduled till November 30. India’s Jay Shah was to take over as ICC Chairman from December 1.

A decision was to be made at the ICC board meeting today on whether the Champions Trophy will be held in Pakistan or not.

Pakistan had asked for an acceptable formula for the trophy before the board meeting, and PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi informed the ICC of Pakistan’s clear stance.

Earlier, Mohsin Naqvi had said that the Board will bear wounds, but will not let their honour be compromised.  PCB has almost completed all the arrangements for the Champions Trophy.

India’s refusal to come to Pakistan has complicated the matter, and PCB says that a match with India at a neutral venue under a hybrid model is not acceptable.

India is lobbying to take the entire Champions Trophy out of Pakistan, but PCB has prepared to block Indian tactics. The Pakistan Cricket Board will not accept any option without its conditions.

How much will PCB get from hosting the Champions Trophy?

Pakistan is set to host the Champions Trophy 2025, but do you know how much money the country will get to host the mega event?

According to reports, Pakistan will get $6 million for hosting rights to the ICC Champions Trophy. Pakistan will also have to pay $1.2 to $1.3 million as a premium to the insurance company to insure the tournament. Pakistan will get more dollars from gate money and hospitality, thus deducting the insurance amount and getting about $6 million.

The ICC provides Pakistan with two instalments of $13 million from its income every year in January and July, while India gets 38 per cent of the annual share of ICC income, which is $90 to $95 million.

We will bear the wounds, but not let ourselves be dishonoured: Mohsin Naqvi’s blunt stand for Champions Trophy

The Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Mohsin Naqvi, has taken an unapologetic stand in light of the International Cricket Council (ICC)’s stance on hosting the Champions Trophy.

Speaking on Geo News’ Geo Pakistan program, senior sports journalist Abdul Majid Bhatti revealed that PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi went to Dubai yesterday, where he spent a busy day at the ICC headquarters.

“Mohsin Naqvi held one-on-one meetings with ICC officials. The PCB Chairman met ICC CEO Jeff  Allardyce and other officials, but many PCB officials in Lahore are unaware of his departure for Dubai,” he revealed.

“Mohsin Naqvi presented Pakistan’s position sternly to the ICC officials and also outlined Pakistan’s legal stance regarding the Champions Trophy. He is still in Dubai today, where he will join the ICC board meeting via video link,” Bhatti added.

“Voting in the ICC emergency meeting regarding the hosting of the Champions Trophy is the last option.

“If we talk about the hybrid model, then undoubtedly, the most popular venue is Dubai, which is close to both Pakistan and India and has a large number of citizens from both countries. However, Pakistan is not considering this option at the moment. If such a situation arises, Mohsin Naqvi will consult the Pakistani government again and respond to the ICC,” he said.

He also speculated that there is a possibility that a decision regarding the Champions Trophy may not be made in today’s meeting, and the matter will be deferred to the next meeting, during which Jay Shah will take over the ICC presidency.

“Jay Shah will be expected to fulfil the requirements of justice, but obviously, he will not do so and will follow the policies of the BJP,” Bhatti said.

The ICC board meeting will begin at 3 pm Pakistani time. This will be the last meeting of Greg Barclay as ICC Chairman.

According to Geo, Mohsin Naqvi has made it clear to the ICC that the Pakistan Board is firm on its stance regarding the Champions Trophy and that they will bear the scars and not allow themselves to be dishonoured.

The ICC has not yet been able to announce the new schedule for the Champions Trophy due to Indian stubbornness, which is also worrying broadcasters, who fear a loss of millions of dollars.

The ICC has called a board meeting for Friday, November 29. An ICC spokesperson has confirmed that this meeting will be held online, and the agenda has been sent to all board members.

The scheduling and future of the Champions Trophy will be considered during the meeting, and various options for the Champions Trophy will be discussed.

The PCB also told the ICC that if a formula is devised to play matches with India at a neutral venue, Pakistan will never go to India to play.

On the other hand, according to a report by the cricket website Cricinfo, the option of holding the Champions Trophy in Pakistan without India may be discussed in the ICC board meeting. The choice of a hybrid model for the Champions Trophy will also be addressed, in which most of the events will be played in Pakistan, but India’s matches will be held in another country.

According to the cricket website, the board meeting will also discuss the proposal to hold the entire tournament in another country, with PCB as the host. However, the chances of a “minus India” formula are low due to commercial value.

The PCB has already discussed the “minus India” proposal based on past examples.

Hopefully, Champions Trophy will be held in Pakistan: Mohsin Naqvi

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has confirmed that the Board is in constant contact with the International Cricket Council (ICC), adding that, “Hopefully, the Champions Trophy will be in Pakistan.”

While talking to media in Lahore, Naqvi said, “It is not possible for us to go and play in India, and they do not play in Pakistan. Hopefully, the Champions Trophy will be in Pakistan; whatever decision is made, we will come out with the best for Pakistan.”

Pointing out that the Gaddafi Stadium has been upgraded to international standards, he said, “The reconstruction work of the stadium started on October 10. The capacity of the stadium will be increased to 35 – 40 thousand, and the view will be much better. I wanted the Rawalpindi stadium to be ready at the same time; if I had received the report of the Pindi Stadium earlier, it would have been better. After seeing the whole situation, we will come out with something better from the ICC meeting.”

The ICC board meeting will be held on Friday to consider the future of the ICC Champions Trophy.

The option of adopting a hybrid model for the Champions Trophy will be presented in the board meeting, and an attempt will be made to convince Pakistan. However, Pakistan has already rejected the hybrid model, and if the decision to vote is against Pakistan, PCB will respond in consultation with the government.

ICC calls board meeting on Champions Trophy hosting issue

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has called a board meeting on November 29 to consider the future of Champions Trophy 2025 due in Pakistan next February.

According to reports, the meeting will be held online, and the agenda will be sent to all board members.

The scheduling and future of the Champions Trophy will be considered during the meeting, reports said, adding that various options will be discussed during the meeting. These options include a hybrid model, a complete transfer from Pakistan or the postponement of the tournament.

The board’s preference is to adopt a hybrid model; however, the PCB has already opposed the same.

The ICC will take a final decision on the Champions Trophy after considering all opinions and suggestions by the board members.

India has refused to come to Pakistan and participate in the tournament whereas Pakistan is adamant on its stance of not accepting any hybrid model.

Meanwhile, due to Indian stubbornness, the ICC has not yet been able to announce the schedule.

The ICC is facing pressure from broadcasters to announce the schedule at the earliest and as per broadcast rights. The ICC may also face legal action if Pakistan-India match is not held.

ICC stops Pakistan from displaying Champions Trophy in Kashmir over Indian reservations

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has stopped Pakistan from taking the Champions Trophy to Kashmir over objections by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

As per the details, PCB had announced the schedule for taking the Champions Trophy 2025 trophy to Skardu, Hunza and Muzaffarabad. The same had also been approved by the ICC.

However, the Indian cricket board objected to the decision, prompting the cricket watchdog to postpone the tour and inform the PCB that the schedule for said cities was being changed.

The trophy will initially be on display in Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad during the tour.

On Thursday, ICC brought the Champions Trophy event trophy from Dubai to Islamabad.

This trophy tour is scheduled to start on Saturday and will continue till November 24.

India has refused to send its cricket team to play Champions Trophy in Pakistan, whereas the PCB is firmly committed to its stance of not accepting hybrid model for the event.

ICC asks BCCI to provide written reasons for not going to Pakistan

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has asked the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to provide written reasons for not going to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had asked the ICC for a written copy of the Indian letter, while the Indian Cricket Board has verbally informed the ICC about not going to Pakistan.

Geo reported that the ICC has now asked the Indian Cricket Board to state written reasons for the refusal. Pakistan can ask for concrete evidence in its favour if it receives written reasons.

According to the rules, the Indian Board will have to give concrete reasons for not going to Pakistan, while the ICC will have to review the reasons and make a final decision about India. If the reasons for not going to Pakistan are not justified, the Indian team has to go to Pakistan. If India does not agree, a 9th team can be included in the Champions Trophy.

ICC will lose $500 million if the Indian team does not participate in the tournament. The ICC has to earn from the broadcast rights of the trophy, advertising and sponsorship. The Indian Board’s loss due to the lack of Pakistan-India matches is estimated at $100 million.

South Africa responds to the rumours of hosting Champions Trophy

Reports carried by Indian media outlets have claimed that Champions Trophy 2025 could shift from Pakistan to South Africa as India yet again creates a rift with the host country on where its matches are to be played.

Now, the South African Cricket Board’s stance on the issue has come to light.

According to Samaa, sources in the South African Cricket Board have said that it is unaware of the rumors that Champions Trophy will be shifted to South Africa. No contact has yet been made with South Africa on the matter. There is no option for the South African Board to hold the Champions Trophy at such short notice.  The Indian media has brought South Africa into the fray to influence Pakistan’s hosting. The South African Board can’t hold the Champions Trophy in a short time.

Sources said that there has been no discussion on the South Africa option in the ICC yet. The issue of shifting the Champions Trophy to South Africa in 2009 was different. The host of the 2009 Champions Trophy was Pakistan. Back then, Board members had expressed concerns over security.

In the current situation, all important board members’ teams have visited Pakistan. No country, including England, Australia, or New Zealand, expressed any concerns or reservations before coming to Pakistan. The Indian media has completely abandoned the idea of shifting the Champions Trophy to South Africa. The ICC has not yet considered this matter.

India has refused to participate in Champions Trophy 2025, but the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is standing firm, creating problems for the ICC.

Earlier, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has sought answers to important questions in a letter written to the head of the International Cricket Council (ICC) after India refused to come to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy.

The PCB wrote a letter to the ICC on Tuesday after India refused to come to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy.

According to Geo, vital answers have been sought in the letter written by the PCB to the head of the ICC.

The PCB has asked the ICC when exactly did the Indian Cricket Board inform them that the Indian cricket team will not be able to participate in the Champions Trophy, which will be held in Pakistan. PCB has also asked whether the Indian Cricket Board has informed the ICC in writing about its refusal. The PCB has also asked the next question: if India has refused in writing to come to Pakistan, then what are the reasons for it.

PCB asked the ICC for a copy of the Indian Cricket Board’s written notice so that the reasons on the basis of which the decision was taken can be reviewed.

Champions Trophy could be shifted to South Africa: reports

Indian media reports are claiming that the Champions Trophy will be shifted to South Africa if Pakistan rejects the hybrid model.

The decision will be made at the board meeting where a poll will be necessary for transferring Champions Trophy from Pakistan.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is awaiting the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) response to an email sent on Friday, and ICC’s next course of action will depend on the PCB’s reaction, the report said.

On the issue of hosting the Champions Trophy, PCB has written a letter to the ICC asking for the reasons for India’s refusal to come to Pakistan.

Earlier, there were reports that PCB is taking a tough stance on the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) decision not to send its team to the Champions Trophy in Pakistan: considering a ‘minus-India’ formula in response.

The PCB has decided to use the examples from the 1996 and 2003 World Cup in its initial stance to adopt a tough stance against India.

In 1996, Australia and West Indies refused to play in Sri Lanka, while in 2003, New Zealand refused to play in Kenya and England refused to play in Zimbabwe. In response, the International Cricket Council (ICC) awarded points to the teams that were present on the ground for the scheduled matches, putting the teams that refused to participate at a disadvantage.

Geo reports that based on these examples, the PCB will assert that the ICC has never changed a venue in the past when teams failed to show up, and as a result, Pakistan will adopt a firm stance.

Pakistan may also propose a ‘minus India’ Champions Trophy on this basis, as India has not yet spoken about the Champions Trophy in writing. PCB will insist to the ICC that India submits all its positions in writing, sources have claimed.

Earlier, it was also reported that Pakistan would write a letter to the ICC in light of the government guidelines in the next day or two, for which the Board had also completed a legal consultation.

Earlier, the PCB denied all claims about the Indian team refusing to travel to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy 2025.

PCB source told The Current, “All speculations about Indian cricket board’s letter to PCB or India not coming to Pakistan are baseless. PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi’s press conference in Gaddafi Stadium on November 8 is the latest update on this issue.”

Mohsin Naqvi said that there should be no politics in the game and assured that the Board will continue preparations despite India not coming.

On the other hand, reports claimed that the government of Pakistan is likely to make tough decisions regarding India’s refusal to come to the Champions Trophy.

The government is considering that if India does not participate at the agreed venues, Pakistan will not play any future matches with India, and until relations with India improve, they will not play any game with India in any tournament.

They are of the view that Pakistan always makes goodwill gestures, but India is always involved in politics.

If India does not participate in matches in Pakistan and the host country doesn’t agree on the hybrid model, then there is a strong chance that Sri Lanka will replace India.

“For two months, there have been reports in the Indian media that their team is not coming. We want no politics in the game. There was no discussion about the hybrid model for the Champions Trophy, and there will be no discussion. Pakistan has always shown goodwill, but it should not be expected every time. If there is any situation, the CB should be informed in writing,” he added.

The Indian media is claiming that the Indian Cricket Board has written to that the PCB that the team is not coming to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCC) is demanding to hold the matches of the Indian team in Dubai, while the BCCI informed the authorities about their concerns that they want to play the matches at neutral venues and Dubai is the best place for that, as per Indian media.
