    ‘CJP Khosa’s statements about Musharraf’s case are fake,’ clarifies SC

    The Supreme Court (SC) of Pakistan has said that the statements of Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Asif Saeed Khosa being aired and published by differnent news channels regarding former army cheif Gen (r) Pervez Musharraf’s high treason case are baseless and concocted.

    In a press release, the top court clarified that the fake news items have created an impression that CJP Khosa was personally involved in the progress of the case and he was giving directions to other judges.

    “Different benches of the supreme court of Pakistan had been hearing different aspects of the case of Gen (r) Pervez Musharraf and had passed various orders for the early disposition of the said case”

    “The Hon’ble Chief Justice had not issued any direction of any sort to the Special Court other than the judicial directions issued by the relevant benches of the Supreme Court in the above mentioned case,” the statement said.

    A few news channels and newspaper had earlier published statements of CJP Khosa saying that the treason case was clear and that Mushrraf was given many chances to present his views.

    On Tuesday, a special court awarded death sentence to former military dictator Musharraf in absentia for suspending the constitution on November 3, 2007.

    Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Asif Saeed Khan Khosa has reportedly said that he was “offered lucrative positions and bribes multiple times to drop former military ruler Gen (r) Pervez Musharraf’s case”, but he refused to accept any.

    According to Geo News, the top judge, during an informal discussion with journalists, said that the Supreme Court (SC) had already declared the former president’s case as “open and shut” and the judges feared nothing for as long as they were providing justice to the masses.

    CJP Khosa was also quoted as saying that the decision regarding the extension of Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa “would have long term effects that the people would realise later”.

    “I have already accepted a fellowship offer at Harvard to pursue following my retirement,” the CJP said.

    On Tuesday, a special court awarded death sentence to former military dictator Musharraf in absentia for suspending the constitution on November 3, 2007.

    While the counsel for the convict and the armed forces’ media wing in separate statements strongly criticised the decision that they said was taken “in haste”, opposition parties maintained that “justice had prevailed”.

    According to The Express Tribune, the outgoing CJP is said to have played a key role in making sure the six-year-old treason trial against the former president was concluded before he retired.

  • CJP says Supreme Court will soon get female judges

    Chief Justice Pakistan Asif Saeed Khosa has revealed that the judiciary is working towards inducting female judges in the Supreme Court.

    Addressing the concluding session of Women Judges Conference in Lahore, Justice Khosa said that more than 300 female judges are working in the district courts of Pakistan and that they are doing a brilliant job.

    “Our women judges have proven their abilities through their verdicts and by the way they have handled complex cases,” said Justice Khosa, adding, “We have as many as 300 women judges in district courts and we hope to soon have at least one or two in the Supreme Court. I had the opportunity to propose two names and they are being actively considered.”

    Justice Khosa said that the top court is working on women’s rights and with time, the differences between male and female judges will be eliminated, adding that women must be empowered for the society to develop.

    Explaining that the Constitution ensures equal rights and treatment to all citizens including minorities, Justice Khosa said that they are encouraging women to enter the judiciary.

    Lahore High Court Chief Justice Muhammad Shamim Khan, while addressing the conference, said that “the judiciary plays an important role in structuring and restructuring of the society.”

    Justice Shamim said that gender-based violence courts were being established in Punjab to protect the rights of women and children.

    Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan has said that when he saw the former premier Nawaz Sharif climbing the stairs of the plane he remembered the doctors’ reports, which said the patient ‘will be gone [forever]’ if not allowed to go abroad, Geo News reported.

    According to the details, PM Imran while addressing a gathering in Mianwali after putting the foundation stone for a hospital said that in the reports it was written that “the patient had heart problems, kidney problems, high sugar and if the patient is not allowed to go abroad then he will be ‘gone’ [forever].”

    PM said that he wondered if Sharif’s recovery owes to the luxurious plane he travelled in or to the London climate, adding that he seeks clarity on the issue and that the matter needs to be investigated.

    The prime minister taunted former PM again by saying that maybe Nawaz had recovered by simply looking at the plane “since it was such a magnificent plane and a common man cannot travel in such an aircraft”.

    The statements from PM Imran have come only a few days after he had put the burden of letting Nawaz travel abroad for treatment on Pakistan courts.

    Imran Khan had earlier said in an indirect reference to Nawaz’s travel to London that there are separate laws for the weak and powerful in the country, requesting the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Asif Saeed Khosa to deliver prompt justice.

    PM also urged CJP Khosa and puisne judge of the Supreme Court Justice Gulzar Ahmed to come forward and restore public confidence in the judiciary.

    CJP Khosa later responding to PM’s remarks reagarding the judiaciary said that Imran Khan himself agreed for ‘someone’ to travel abroad, so it should not be said that the judiciary was the sole authority in the matter.

    CJP added, “Do not taunt us regarding the powerful, everyone is equal before the law”.

    After CJP Khosa’s remarks Imran Khan clarified his stance and said that the government agreed to allow the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo for medical treatment on “humanitarian grounds”.
