  • Rohail Hyatt to no longer produce Coke Studio

Rohail Hyatt, during a Twitter exchange with a fan, has revealed that he is stepping down as Coke Studio’s (CS) producer.

Responding to a user who asked him about this year’s CS, Rohail said: “I’m sure CS (Coke Studio) is being planned, but not by me.”

Later, Rohail confirmed the same to a local media publication but did not share further details.

However, Hyatt clarified that he will continue to make music and entertain his fans.

Hyatt joined Coke Studio in 2008 with its first season and stepped down after 6 seasons. He was later brought back for the 12th season in 2019, though it failed to impress audiences. Rohail also produced the latest Season 13, which had only twelve songs due to COVID-19 restrictions and lockdowns.

Another copyright violation for Coke Studio Season 12

Ever since Coke Studio began in 2008, it has had its fair share of highs and low. After a disastrous Season 11, the music platform brought back Rohail Hyatt for the 12th season. Unfortunately, Season 12 didn’t impress audiences either and it hasn’t been a smooth sailing considering three of its songs have been taken down for copyright infringement.

According to latest reports, the studio has been taken to court over the track Mundeya, sung by Ali Sethi and Qurat-ul-Ain Balouch. The song has also been struck down due to a copyright violation claim. The studio says that the song, also featured in the film Mukhra, was a tribute to its original singers: Madam Noor Jehan and Nadeem.

The ownership of the song’s censorship certificate originally belonged to Muhammad Sadiq. After his death, the ownership was passed down to his son Muhammad Saleem, who is now taking Coke Studio to court for copyright violation.

Saleem claims that Coke Studio did not seek any permission before remixing the song. Hence the studio has been directed to stop airing the song.

Previously, Abrarul Haq’s Billo, Rachel Viccaji and Shuja Haider’s Saiyaan and Sanam Marvi’s Hairaan Hua were taken down for copyright infringement.

Coke Studio Season 12 seems to have found itself in the middle of a copyright controversy yet again after two songs of the season were deleted from Youtube.

Sanam Marvi’s first song for the season Hairaan Hua has been taken off YouTube days after it’s release. According to the message displayed by Youtube on the Twitter link, “the video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by Abida Parveen.”

Other than that, Abrarul Haq’s rendition of his iconic Billo has also been removed due to “copyright claim by Karman Entertainment Limited.” Billo was a roaring success and people loved this remake.

Previously, Shuja Haider and Rachel Viccaji’s Saiyyan was not released on Youtube due to copyright infringement. It was revealed that EMI Pakistan had the rights of the Noor Jehan classic and they stopped the song from being aired. However, the matter got resolved and the song was released.

Needless to say, fans and listeners are quite upset with the latest developments.
