Before we dwell on the magical journey of the Punjabi lyrical composition, let’s first understand what the word ‘pasoori’ means.

Pasoori’ is a Punjabi word loosely translated in two ways in Urdu as ‘kashmakash‘ and ‘jaldbazi/teezi’ meaning difficulty/conflict and impatience/hasty.

Punjabi speakers casually use this word as “Enu bari pasoori pai hoi ay [This person is facing some difficult situation or this person is very impatient]”

Majestic words written by Ali Sethi and Fazal Abbas, definitely have taken everyone on a listening spree. ‘Pasoori’ turns all angst into art, with its lyrics signifying the need to celebrate artistic self-expression.

Here is what the lyrics of Pasoori mean.

    [Verse 1: Ali Sethi]
    Agg lavan majboori nu
    Set fire to your worries

    Aan jaan di pasoori nu
    To waiting and to hurries

    Zehar bane haan teri
    If your love is poison

    Pee jaavan main poori nu
I will drink it in a flurry

    Aana si o nai aaya
He said he’d come, he never did

    Dil baang baang mera takraya
    My heart lurched and slid

    Kaga bol ke dus jaavein
Let the crow tell me why

    Paavan gheyo dee choori nu
    And feast on sweet supply

    [Pre-Chorus: Ali Sethi]
Raawaan ch baawan ch o nu lukawaan

I will hide him and bide him in loving embraces

    Koi mainu naa roke
    No one makes me stop

    [Chorus: Ali Sethi]
Mere dhol judaiyaan di, tenu khabar kivein hove

My love how can you know what happens when we part

Aa jaave dil tera, poora vi na hove
I hope you fall in love, I hope it breaks your heart

Haan baniyan banaiyaan di, gal baat kivein hove
    How will the willing, communicate

Aa jaave dil tera, poora vi na hove
I hope you fall in love, I hope it breaks your heart

    [Verse 2: Shae Gill]
    Bhul gayi majboori nu

    I forgot about my chains

    Duniya di dastoori nu
    and people refrain

    Saath tera hai bathera
    You are enough for me

    Poora kar zaroori nu
    Fulfil my destiny

    Aana si o nai aaya
He said he will come but he never did

    Raasta na dikhlaaya
I could not see the way was hidden

    Dil humara de sahara
    My heart gives solace

    Khaahishaat adhoori nu
    to wishes unfulfilled

    [Pre-Chorus: Shae Gill]
Waari main jaavan, main tenu bulavaan

I dote on you, I call out you name

    Gal saari taan hove
Let’s have it out, for shame

    [Chorus: Shae Gill]
Mere dhol judaiyaan di, tenu khabar kivein hove

My love, how can you know what happens when we part

Aa jaave dil tera, poora vi na hove
I hope you fall in love, I hope it breaks your heart

Haan baniyan banaiyaan di, gal baat kivein hove
    How will the willing communicate?

Aa jaave dil tera, poora vi na hove
I hope you fall in love, I hope it breaks your heart

[Bridge: Shae Gill & Ali Sethi]
Mere dhol judaiyaan di, sardaari na hove

My love, don’t let this distance reign

    Mere dhol judaiyaan di
My love, what of this distance

    Ahhhhaaaaaaa

Mere dhol judaiyaan di, sardaari na hove
My love, don’t let this distance reign

Dildaaran di, sab yaaaran di, aazaari na hove
Don’t let these lovers be in pain

Dildaaran di, sab yaaaran di, aazaari na hove
Don’t let these lovers be in pain

    Aa chalein le ke tujhe
    Come let’s go away

    Hai jahaan silsilay
    where all the lovers meet

Tu hai wahi, hai teri kami
You are the one, it’s you I need

Bana de, saza de, panah de hume
Give me life, give me love, take me in your arms

Bana de, saza de, panah de hume
Give me life, give me love, take me in your arms

    Agg lavan majboori nu
    Set fire to your worries

    Aan jaan di pasoori nu
    To waiting and to hurries

    Zehar bane haan teri
    If your love is poison

    Pee jaavan main poori nu
I will drink it in a flurry

[Chorus: Ali Sethi & Shae Gill]
Mere dhol judaiyaan di, tenu khabar kivein hove

My love, how can you know what happens when we part

Aa jaave dil tera, poora vi na hove

    How will the willing communicate

Aa jaave dil tera, poora vi na hove
I hope you fall in love, I hope it breaks your heart

[Outro: Shae Gill & Ali Sethi]
    Poora vi na hove

I hope it breaks your heart

    Poora vi na hove
I hope it breaks your heart

EXCLUSIVE: Ali Sethi reveals something special about ‘Pasoori’ and a truck

Coke Studio’s latest song features singers Ali Sethi and Shae Gill.

The song ‘Pasoori’ is a fusion of pop and folk music. It makes you want to dance to its magical tune.

Pasoori‘ has been written by Sethi and Fazal Abbas, while the composition has been done by Sethi and Zulfiqar J Khan, popularly known as Xulfi. The music has been produced by Abdullah Siddiqui and Xulfi.

The Current reached out to Ali Sethi and he revealed that the song is warm and familiar. “It makes one feel good.”

Sethi revealed that he was driving back from Faisalabad, Punjab when he saw a quote written at the back of a truck, “Aag lavaan teri majbooriyan nu [ set fire to your worries]. I felt that this was such an amazing expression of the Punjabi language. This should be part of a song somehow.”

Sethi said that this line made him think further about the combination of words that would be suited for the lyrical completion of the song. And that’s when the words, “Aan jaan di pasoori nu [the business of coming and going]” came to his mind.

Sethi during the Behind the Scenes (BTS) of Coke Studio’s song Pasoori says that unfortunately, we live in a very polarised world. “Where borders and boundaries of all sorts have become more rigid.”

Sethi during the BTS says that he is a modern-day gypsy living between Pakistan and United States (US). “It would be interesting to make a case for the alternative, which is the right to free movement of ideas and melodies through a song. Our music already embodies that alternative.”

‘Pasoori’ turns all angst into art, with its lyrics signifying the need to celebrate artistic self-expression.

  • Coke Studio’s ‘Tu Jhoom’ not an original melody?

Coke Studio’s ‘Tu Jhoom’ not an original melody?

The grand showcase of Coke Studio season 14, featuring the iconic Naseebo Lal and legendary Abida Parveen kicked off on January 14.

Tu Jhoom is a song about a conversation about letting yourself go, opening your heart and understanding that you are enough and nothing will be gained by running after worldly things.

The song rapidly gained fame among the masses leaving everyone captivated with the lyrics and its soothing melody.

Tu Jhoom has been credited as written by Adnan Dhool, composed and mixed by Xulfi, arranged and produced by Xulfi and Abdullah Siddiqui. However, according to The Express Tribune, Nirmala Maghani, an up-and-coming singer from Umarkot would like to differ to some aspects of the credits list.

As per a news report published in The Express Tribune, Maghani claimed that the melody of the song Tu Jhoom has been lifted from a sample she had sent to Xulfi back in June 2021, while eyeing a slot as featuring artist in Coke Studio 14.

Xulfi didn’t reply to any of her messages, which she thought was expected from such a senior musician being suddenly reached by a singer he doesn’t know via WhatsApp. But the moment she heard Tu Jhoom she realised that one of the melodies she had sent had been used in the song without any acknowledgment.

Speaking with Tribune, Maghani said, “The melody is exactly the same. I have been calling Xulfi since I heard the song and after a day he finally responded by saying I didn’t even download your audio file, which isn’t true because all my messages were received with blue ticks.”

Maghani stressed the point that all she wants is recognition and due credit for her work and nothing else. “It’s about recognition of my work and being acknowledged for it, nothing else.”
