    Schools shut down as Kurram tribal clashes continue

    A clash between tribes in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP)”s district Kurram has affected people’s livelihood amidst relentless fighting.

    Different roads have been blocked, including the Peshawar Parachinar road, police officials told Geo News.

    Chairman of Private Schools Management Muhammad Hayat Khan said that educational institutions have been closed for one week following the tense situation in Kurram.

    Deputy Commissioner Kurram Javed Ullah Mehsud stated that efforts are underway, in collaboration with advisors and a jirga, to stop the active lethal disputes.

    According to local people, the Afghan Kharlachi border has been closed for nine consecutive days as the situation deteriorated.

    They further claimed that residents are facing severe difficulties including acute shortages of commodities, medicine, fuel and other basic facilities.

    Earlier, clashes erupted between rival tribes of Bushehra and Ahmadzai following the construction of trenches on disputed land.

    An apprehended terrorist belonging to Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) Rooh Ullah, has revealed that suicide bombers are administered injections to numb them two days before planned attacks.

    In a video statement, the terrorist revealed details about his and other suicide bombers’ training in a seminary in Afghanistan and how they crossed the border to get inside Pakistan.

    He said that he was a student of the seminary Tarteel-ul-Quran in Tortam village in Afghanistan’s Dangam area for one year.

    He’d received the training for 10 days under the supervision of men named Molvi Sibghatullah along with Farooq and Zakir.

    He stated that the injections were administered to suicide bombers two days before their departure so they could no longer understand what was happening around them.

    Rooh Ullah stated that after completion of their training, he, along with four other suicide bombers, travelled to the Afghan border, where a facilitator named Jawad helped them get inside Pakistani territory.

    Then, the group’s responsibility was taken over by another man, Sajjad, who separated the suicide bombers and took Rooh Ullah to a mosque.

    The terrorist had now been instructed to meet another individual, Suleman, whom he got to meet after travelling for one hour.

    Suleman instructed the terrorist to receive a suicide vest from Jameel, who would also guide him about carrying out the attack in a cantonment area.

    Pakistan is witnessing the most significant surge in terrorist attacks over the last two years as it blames the Taliban government in Kabul for not taking action against the TTP.

    Journalist Absar Alam has revealed in the Samaa Podcasts series that a retired officer who is allegedly suspected of being involved in the assassination of ex-MQM leader Syed Ali Raza Abidi in 2018 was very close to former spymaster Gen Faiz Hameed.

    “Many orders were given to kill people; some were executed while some escaped. The details will emerge with time, whether these orders were given by Imran Khan or his boss [Gen Bajwa] or if he followed his own whims,” alleged Absar Alam.

    In 2018, Syed Ali Raza Abidi was shot dead in Karachi’s DHA when two unknown men riding a bike opened fire on Abidi’s car near his home.

    MQM at that time called it a “coldblooded assassination” that was “part of a crackdown on the party by Pakistan’s military establishment.”

    Absar opined that the details coming to light depends upon whether Faiz cab prove if he was given orders and by whom to conduct these activities.

    DC Panjgur killed in attack in Balochistan

    The Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Panjgur Zakir Baloch was assassinated by unknown armed men in the Mastung District of Balochistan on Monday.

    Zakir Baloch was travelling on the National Highway near the Khada-Kucha area along with two people, District Chairman Malik Jan and Ahmed Jan, towards Quetta when at least 15 armed people attacked the vehicle, Geo News reported.

    All three suffered bullet injuries, after which the DC and his friends were shifted to a nearby hospital. Zakir succumbed to his injuries; however, his friends were referred to Quetta Civil Hospital’s trauma centre for further treatment.

    In recent years, the security situation has been getting worse as foreign-funded militant organisations increase their foothold in the troubled province.

    Journalist Iftikhar Firdous posted on X, “The deputy commissioner of Panjgur has been killed by at least two dozen attackers opening firing at his vehicle; local said that militants had set up a checkpoint looking for government officials.”

    Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif strongly condemned the attack, expressing grief over the martyrdom of DC Zakir Baloch.

    Asad Shah charged in Fatima’s murder

    An Anti-Terrorism Court in Khairpur has convicted four individuals in the case involving the death of a minor maid, Fatima Fariro, from last year. The convicted are Pir Asad Shah, Hina Shah, Pir Fayaz Shah, and Imtiaz Mirasi.

    The four offenders have been charged by the court in connection with Fatima’s murder that happened at Ranipur Haveli in Ranipur village near Khairpur city in Sindh province.

    The hearing has been adjourned until August 12. The witnesses’ statements will be recorded at the next hearing.

    Background:

    On August 14, 2023, 10-year-old Fatima was allegedly tortured to death in a mansion in Ranipur.

    Pir Asad Shah, Fayaz Shah, Hina Shah, and Compounder Fayaz have been named as the main suspects in the murder case.

    The case of the young maid’s murder is currently under review in the anti-terrorism court in Khairpur.

    Main suspect Asad Shah was arrested after the case was highlighted, and a video revealing the girl’s suffering before her death was also released.

    In a new twist to the story, police claim that the murder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founding member Dr Shahid Siddique was planned by his son.

    Siddique was shot dead in Valencia Town, Lahore, on August 2 when he was returning from the mosque after offering Friday prayers. His son was present at the crime scene but remained unhurt.

    Police alleged that Siddique’s son, Qayyum, planned his father’s murder with a friend because he wasn’t allowed to marry a girl of his choice by his father.

    Qayyum had made a deal of Rs. 5 million for the murder of his father in January for the same reason, said police, adding he paid Rs20 million for the second attack on Siddiqui. Dr Shahid was attacked in January as well, but police remained unsuccessful in finding the culprits at the time.

    Police said that the same son who was the mastermind behind the murder led his father’s funeral prayer.

    One of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)’s founding members, Dr Shahid Siddique, was shot dead in Valencia Town, Lahore, yesterday as he returned from the mosque after offering Friday prayers.

    As he was returning from the Khizra Mosque in the H-block of Valencia Town, an unknown man approached him and opened fire.

    The victim suffered four bullet wounds and was taken to a nearby hospital where he passed away.

    IG Punjab Usman Anwar ordered immediate action to arrest the perpetrator(s) and sought a detailed report from DIG Operations.

    PTI leaders expressed shock and condemned the incident, with Zulfi Bukhari saying that he was “devastated to learn the assassination of Dr Siddique.”

    New report reveals surge in gender-based violence cases, low conviction rates

    A report released by the Law and Justice Com­m­ission of Pakistan (LJCP) reveals an increase in gender-based violence across Pakistan.

    The report also notes an increase in pending gender violence cases in the courts.

    The number of pending gender violence cases rose from 21,891 to 39,665 in 2023.

    In Punjab, the number of pending gender violence cases increased by 100 percent, while Sindh saw a three percent increase, KP experienced a 14 percent rise, Balochistan had a two percent increase, and Islamabad saw a one percent rise.

    Most cases of gender-based violence involve sexual assault, and pending cases also include kidnapping, human trafficking, and murder of women.

    Crimes committed using electronic means related to gender cases have also increased, while economically motivated crimes have decreased.

    According to the report, the conviction rate for those involved in gender crimes is only five percent, and the acquittal rate for accused individuals in gender crimes is 64 percent.

    Additionally, 480 special courts were established in 2019 to address gender-based crimes across the country.

    A lawyer for a man arrested in suspicion of being a drug dealer took Lahore High Court to task for denying his clients the privileges given to former Imran Khan, currently also in jail.

    A bail hearing was scheduled today at the Lahore High Court.

    During the proceedings, the suspect’s lawyer cited legal precedents, including cases involving the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan who is currently incarcerated.

    Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, presiding over the bench, deliberated on the eligibility for bail in such cases. He stated that the accused involved in drug trade deserve punishment without bail, emphasizing the detrimental impact of drugs on society and its influence in educational institutions.

    The lawyer argued under Article 25 of the Constitution, the man deserved the same conveniences given to Imran in legal matters. “My client and the PTI founder should be considered equally under Article 25,” the lawyer asserted.

    Responding to this, Justice Mansoor questioned the relevance of Khan’s cases to the current bail application. The lawyer replied back that despite facing numerous cases, the PTI’s founder had been granted bail in a cipher case by the Supreme Court.

    “Imran Khan was granted bail despite facing over 200 cases, including terrorism charges,” the lawyer elaborated. “In contrast, my client faces only 14 cases and should similarly be eligible for bail.”

    Justice Shah differentiated between the nature of charges against the PTI founder and the suspect, emphasizing the severity of the charges in each case.

    The lawyer countered by highlighting the specific charge against the PTI founder, which carries the death penalty. “There is a cipher case against the PTI founder, a capital offense,” the lawyer pointed out.

    The lawyer also drew attention to the disparity in facilities between the PTI founder and his client while in custody. “The PTI founder enjoys better living conditions in jail, which are not available to my client,” the lawyer argued.

    After considering legal precedents and arguments presented, the three-member bench, headed by Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, approved the bail application of the accused, Obaidullah.

    Five detectives searching for a thief were abducted in Tank district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa along with two sniffer dogs.

    According to the police, the abduction occurred in Malazai, a suburb of Tank. The kidnappers have demanded a ransom of 100 million rupees for the release of the hostages.

    DPO Tank Abdul Salam Khalid told Geo News that a person named Noor Ali had hired a private company from Kohat to investigate a petty robbery incident at a house.

    The team, along with two Khoji dogs, were abducted by unknown armed men when they were on their way to Kohat after the investigation.

    Among the hostages, Shoaib Khan, Rafiullah, and Rais Khan belong to Kirk, while Shahid Aziz Bhatti and Majid Ali Okara are residents of Punjab.

    According to the DPO, the investigation team was called without informing the police, who have now started investigating the incident.

    An 18-year-old girl was raped in Gulab Devi Hospital in Lahore, leading to the arrest of one suspect.

    The girl, a resident of Nankana Sahib, was undergoing treatment at the hospital.

    The police arrested the accused and registered a case.

    According to the police, the incident occurred on July 13. The suspect is a student of a laboratory technician.

    The police claims that another accomplice of the accused will also be arrested.
