  • Alarming surge in violence against women in Punjab with Lahore at top

    A staggering surge has been witnessed in violence against women, with over 10,000 cases reported in the first four months of 2023 alone in Punjab.

    Startling data from the Sustainable Social Development Organisation (SSDO), a research-based advocacy firm, reveals that 5,551 women were kidnapped during this period, translating to an alarming average of two women abducted every hour.

    SSDO, through a ‘Right to Information’ request to the Punjab Police under Article 19-A of the Constitution, collected the data, reflecting an urgent need for policymakers and stakeholders to address the issue and devise targeted measures to combat this growing crisis.

    The report revealed that between January 1, 2023, and April 30, 2023, Punjab police registered a total of 10,365 cases of violence against women, alongside 1,768 cases of violence against children. However, the actual numbers may be considerably higher as many incidents go unreported due to social stigma and a lack of trust in law enforcement.

    Lahore took the lead with 1,427 reported cases of violence, with one out of every four victims being kidnapped from the provincial capital. Other concerning statistics include 2,818 cases of physical assault, with Lahore as the primary hotspot (504), followed by Sheikhupura (262) and Faisalabad (225).

    Additionally, 1,111 cases of rape and 613 cases of human trafficking were documented, with Lahore again topping the list with 139 rape cases and 210 trafficking cases. Faisalabad reported a significant number of rape cases at 117.

    Police on Friday have taken four individuals into custody in connection with a distressing incident where two women were paraded naked in front of a mob in the northeastern state of Manipur in India.

    Local police confirmed the arrest of the four main accused, as announced on their official Twitter account.

    The action has been taken after over two months of the incident happening in the troubled district. Public outrage exerted pressure on the state government, led by the Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and four culprits were apprehended.

    The suspects came to light after a video of the incident surfaced on social media in early May, garnering nationwide outrage. The video depicted the women being subjected to humiliation and harassment by a jeering mob while walking naked along a street in the state.

    The country’s Supreme Court took notice of the horrifying incident and issued a warning to Modi’s government, urging immediate action, with the implication that the court would intervene if necessary.

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi finally broke his silence on the matter, after facing harsh criticism by lawmakers and public. He said that the country was “shamed” by the incident.

    The incident occurred against the backdrop of months of ethnic violence that has resulted in at least 120 fatalities. The situation has been further exacerbated by the imposition of an internet shutdown by the Indian authorities in the area.

    Sindh High Court (SHC) on Monday rejected a suspect’s plea for pre-arrest bail in a case pertaining to the murder of his teenaged wife.

    He was handed over to the police.

    In an Instagram post, Pakistani civil rights activist and lawyer Mohammad Jibran Nasir shared that the suspect Hassan is finally in police custody almost a year after brutally murdering 19-year-old Hifza. The suspect strangled his wife and then hung her body by the ceiling fan to make it look like suicide.

    Nasir further stated that two days before her murder, Hifza on a recorded phone call, complained to her brother-in-law about being subjected to sexual violence, beatings and abuse by the suspect.

    The suspect runs a madrassah, along with his father who is co-accused in the murder case. The lawyer pinpointed that they lived in the upper portion of the madrassah where the murder was committed.

    Nasir admired the efforts made by the victim’s mother Farzana, saying it was her struggle for justice that led to the culprit’s arrest.

    In the video posted by him, police can be seen taking the suspect away while the mother of the victim tells him that he is an imposter not a mullah, “I had married my daughter to you because of your religious status, but you are a phony.” In response, the suspect threatened her that “You will be next.”

    A man in Abbottabad killed his wife, two sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law over a domestic dispute, ARY ha reported. As per details, the man hailing from Lari Banota, Abbottabad opened fire on his wife and two sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law. 

    According to the police officials, the four family members died instantly, and one person was taken to the hospital due to injuries.

    The suspect fled the scene after killing his four family members. Police are investigating the case and raids are being conducted to arrest the suspect.

    A teenage girl who had been reported missing from Karachi has allegedly married her kidnapper in Lahore, according to police, Dawn has reported.

    The girl’s family had filed a First Information Report (FIR) under Section 365-B of PPC while the police had conducted raids in Peshawar and Lahore to find her.

    The police have claimed that the girl married the kidnapper with her consent. The family had named Abdullah in the FIR, and according to Korangi-SSP Sajid Amir Sadozai, the girl’s marriage documents are being verified.

    The girl had gone missing on February 13. The case is currently under investigation, and further details are yet to be revealed.

    Shah Nawaz Amir, the main suspect in the murder of his wife Sarah Inam, had allegedly sought to tamper with the evidence, police reports released on Sunday have revealed.

    Six mobile phones were reportedly found at the crime site, five of which belonged to Shah Nawaz and one of which was registered in the victim’s name, according to the police.

    The accused used dumbbells, the murder weapon, to smash both his own and his wife’s phones in order to wipe the data, according to the police.

    Police have taken senior journalist Ayaz Amir in custody after obtaining arrest warrants for him and his former wife in the murder case. However, his wife have not been arrested yet.

    Sameen, the mother of Prime accused Shah Nawaz, and the wife of renowned political analyst Ayaz Amir, in a petition filed with an Islamabad sessions court has said that she has no link with the murder. Offering details of the grisly incident, she has stated that her son had sent her a message on Whatsapp to arrange his wife’s rukhsati by speaking to the her father just one night before the crime.

    She further said that Shah Nawaz called her on her mobile phone at 9:12 am the following day to inform her about the incident.
    “The petitioner asked Shahnawaz to sit in her room and Ayaz … had called the police and within a few minutes, the police had arrived and took custody of Shahnawaz,” she said in the plea.

    The petition stated that Sameena then rushed to Shah Nawaz’s room but by the time she got there, her daughter-in-law had passed away.

    Sarah’s murder rocked Islamabad on Friday morning, as news of the crime spread across social media and news networks.
    It has been reported that after murdering her, Shahnawaz dumped her body in a bathtub.

    A 10-year-old girl was allegedly raped and then murdered in Lahore. The murdered girl allegedly went swimming at a pool with her brother Sajjad and a five-year-old sister.

    The victim then went missing. When her brother tried to find her and contacted the swimming pool owner, Ali Raza, Raza told him she had gone home.

    When she didn’t come home, her family went to the swimming pool and found her floating in the swimming pool. She was then taken to the hospital where she was declared dead by the hospital staff.

    The murdered girl’s family, relatives, and community people organised a protest on Ring Road. They say that she was raped before the murder.
    However, there is no mention of rape in the First Information Report (FIR). The police are investigating the case.

    ‘Only Yes means Yes’: Spain passes new law that requires explicit consent for sex

    Spain’s lower house of parliament passed legislation on Thursday requiring explicit consent for sex rather than consent that might be inferred from silence or by default.
    The legislation was passed on Thursday with 205 lawmakers voting in favour and 141 against.
    The law “Only Yes means Yes”, defines rape as sex without clear consent.

    “Consent is recognised only when a person has freely demonstrated it through actions which, in the context of the circumstances of the case, clearly express the person’s will,” says the law.

    The new law also sets fines for street harassment and for sharing intimate images and videos of a person without their consent.

    It was proposed by the country’s Socialist government after the high-profile “Wolfpack” gang-rape incident in Pamplona in 2016 prompted widespread protests.
    An 18-year-old woman was gang-raped by five men at the bull-running festival in Pamplona, northern Spain.

    In court, it was argued that video footage from the men’s phones, which showed the woman motionless and with her eyes closed during the attack, was proof of her consent.

    The men were convicted guilty of sexual abuse but not of rape because the woman was unable to prove that she had not given consent.

    A group of armed men stormed a music video shoot and raped eight models in Johannesburg, South Africa. The horrific incident took place in a small town called Krugersdorp, situated in the West of Johannesburg.

    Out of the 20 suspects, three have been arrested by the police so far.

    The group attacked the models as they were setting up the set for the shoot.

    According to the police, the women were aged between 18 and 35. One of the survivors was raped by 10 men and another by eight.

    “It appears that they (the suspects) are foreign nationals,” said the police, adding that they are illegal miners in South Africa.

    South African President Cyril Ramaphosa had ordered the police minister to make sure the perpetrators were “apprehended and dealt with”.

    A man in Karachi stabbed his wife to death and then cooked her body parts. As per the police report, Ashiq murdered his wife in the Gulshan-i-Iqbal area.

    The couple’s 16-year-old daughter told the police about the incident.

    As per media reports, the family resided in the school at which they worked. The suspect, Ashiq, wanted his wife to engage in some unethical activities. However, she did not oblige, which infuriated her husband. Ashiq then killed her and cooked her body parts in a cauldron.  

    “A medical examination showed that the woman’s body pieces were cut before being thrown in the cauldron. Her left leg was cleanly separated at knee joint as was left forearm at the elbow,” said Police Surgeon Dr Summaiya Syed. The samples from the dead wife’s body have been collected to rule out intoxication and for histopathology.

    Ashiq escaped with three of his children after killing his wife and cooking her body parts. The police is looking for him.
