‘Lies’: Afridi responds to allegations of forcing Danish Kaneria to convert to Islam

Shahid Afridi has responded to the allegations of forcing former Pakistan leg-spinner Danish Kaneria to convert to Islam. Talking exclusively to The Current, Shahid Afridi said he does not want to dignify such baseless allegations by responding to a man who has tarnished Pakistan’s name in the cricketing world. Kaneria was banned for life for spot-fixing after being found guilty of corruption.

“You can imagine what sort of a man is Kaneria. He has brought disrepute to Pakistan, our cricket team, his family and colleagues,” said Afridi.

Afridi added that he was quite young at the time mentioned by Kaneria and wasn’t too religious himself back then. “He is an attention-seeker. That’s the reason for his lies.”

Danish had accused Shahid Afridi of attempting to force him to convert to Islam. Kaneria said that Shahid Afridi “bullied” him and that the two were never friends during his tenure.

In an interview with an Indian TV channel, Kaneria accused Afridi of having a terrible attitude towards him, which hampered his chances of playing more international cricket. He went on to say that when Younis Khan was named captain of his departmental side, he finally got a chance to play regular first-class cricket. Kaneria said that he was fortunate that the rest of the squad was supportive of him and that no one else had a negative attitude towards him.

‘It was a sarcastic post’: Danish Kaneria on ‘Meray Paas Tum Ho’ meme fiasco

Danish Kaneria, who is only the second Hindu to play for Pakistan after his maternal uncle Anil Dalpat, was recently involved in a meme fiasco after the protagonist Danish (played by Humayun Saeed) in the blockbuster drama Meray Paas Tum Ho passed away in the final episode. Soon after the episode aired, people began to discuss the drama serial and its end on social media.

Amidst all that, one social media user remarked that he was upset to hear about ‘Danish Kaneria’s’ death. Kaneria responded to the user saying that he is well and alive.

Following that, on Thursday, Kaneria decided to hold an interactive session with his fans on the microblogging website and the hashtag #AskDanish began to trend on Twitter.

A Twitter user couldn’t help but ask the Kaneria about the drama and Danish’s death. In response, the cricketer said that it was a “sarcastic post” and that he was not aware of the drama.

Kaneria also answered a plethora of questions and appealed to the Pakistan Cricket Board to facilitate him in his comeback.

If things were not clear enough already.

He shared that Test Cricket is his favourite format.

    His love for Pakistan.

Kaneria was all praises for Prime Minister Imran Khan.

He even spoke about the controversy that followed when Shoaib Akhtar has claimed that he faced discrimination at the hands of a few Pakistani cricketers, who were reluctant to even eat with him because he is a Hindu.

Kaneria, now 39, was found guilty of spot-fixing alongside Mervyn Westfield while playing for Essex against Durham in 2009.

The leg-spinner was found to have convinced Westfield to concede 12 runs during the one-day game. Westfield was handed a four-month prison sentence and ECB banned him for five years.

Kaneria admitted to spot-fixing in 2018 after six years of denial.

  • Danish Kaneria faced ‘discrimination’ for being a Hindu: Akhtar

Former cricketing star Shoaib Akhtar has claimed that his teammate Danish Kaneria faced discrimination at the hands of a few Pakistani cricketers, who were reluctant to even eat with him because he is a Hindu.

According to The News, Kaneria, who is only the second Hindu to play for Pakistan after his maternal uncle Anil Dalpat, took 261 wickets in 61 Tests at an average of 34.79, and also played 18 ODIs.

Akhtar made the revelation during a show ‘Game on Hai‘ aired on PTV Sports, foreign media reported on Thursday. “In my career I fought with two three (in the team) when they started talking on regionalism. Things like ‘who is from Karachi, Punjab or Peshawar’, that used to infuriate.

“So what if someone is a Hindu, he is doing well for the team. They used to say ‘sir ye yaaha se khaana kaise le raha ha‘ (how is he taking food from this place)?’” said the 44-year-old, who played 46 Tests and 163 ODIs. “The same Hindu won the Test for us against England. If he is taking a bagful of wickets for Pakistan, he should play. We could not have won the series without Kaneria’s effort. But not many gave him credit for that,” said Akhtar.

When contacted, Kaneria supported Akhtar’s claims.

“Shoaib has been a legend of the game. His words are also as blunt as his bowling. When I was playing I did not have the courage to speak on these matters but after Shoaib bhai’s comments, I do. He has always supported me and also Inzy bhai (Inzaman-ul-Haq), Mohammad Yusuf and Younis bhai (Younish bhai),” Kaneria told a news agency over phone from Karachi.

“Those who did not support me, I will make their names public soon. Having said that, I feel fortunate and honoured that I got to play for Pakistan,” added Kaneria.
