  • Blast in restaurant in China kills at least 31 people

    At least 31 people have been killed and seven injured on Wednesday as the result of a gas explosion at a restaurant in northwestern China. The blast was caused by a leaking liquefied petroleum gas tank.

    “A leak of liquefied petroleum gas … caused an explosion during the operation of a barbecue restaurant,” state news agency Xinhua said on Wednesday.
    The owner, shareholders, and staff of the restaurant were among the nine people who were detained by police after the explosion.

    According to media accounts, the BBQ restaurant in Yinchuan, the region’s capital, is very popular among locals. High school students and pensioners were among those killed in the explosion, which occurred during the busiest dining hours.

    Indian model crushed to death by falling iron pillar at fashion show

    Indian model Vanshika Chopra was crushed to death by an iron pillar while walking down the fashion runway in Noida on Sunday.

    According to NDTV, the iron pillar, which was erected for lightning purposes, fell on stage during the show, killing the model instantly. Another man, Bobby Raj, was also gravely injured at the scene and was rushed to the hospital for treatment.

    The police informed the media that the organisers of the show, along with four other people, have been arrested. He added that the deceased’s brother has filed a complaint against the management of the studio.

    “Vanshika’s death has been informed to her family members. The body has been sent for postmortem. In this regard, the police have arrested the fashion show organiser and 4 people involved in the lighting work,” said Mohan Awasthi, the Additional Deputy Commissioner Police, Noida.

    Woman who wrote book on grief after husband’s death charged with his murder

    Kouri Richins, a mother of three and author of a book about grief following the death of her husband, has been charged with his murder.

    According to prosecutors, she allegedly poisoned Eric Richins with a lethal dose of the synthetic drug fentanyl, which was found in his system after he died on March 4, 2022.

    Ms Richins was detained in Provo, Utah, on Monday and is also charged with possessing GHB, a drug commonly associated with “date rape” cases due to its sedative effects.

    Search warrants seen by KPCW revealed that Mr Richins’ family had expressed suspicion that Ms Richins was responsible for his death, and he had reportedly warned them that she was to blame if anything happened to him. The charges also come after an “unnamed acquaintance” claimed to have sold fentanyl to Ms Richins.

    Ms Richins claimed to have found her husband “cold to the touch” after she had given him a THC gummy and a Moscow Mule to celebrate him selling a house. Following his death, she wrote a picture book titled “Are you with me?” to help children dealing with the loss of a loved one.

    She had been promoting the book in recent television interviews, including an appearance on “Good Things Utah,” where she explained that children needed to be reminded that a loved one’s spirit is always present in the home.

    In addition to the murder charge, Ms Richins is also accused of altering her husband’s life insurance policy to make herself the sole beneficiary. She is currently in custody, and the case is ongoing.

    Rare type of bird flu causes first death in China

    According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), a woman in China has died after contracting a rare type of bird flu, making the death the first known human fatality from the strain.

    However, the H3N8 subtype of avian influenza does not seem to spread from person to person.

    The woman, aged 56, was from the southern province of Guangdong and is the third person to have contracted this subtype, with the previous two cases also reported in China last year. Although the Guangdong Provincial Centre for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the third infection in the woman last month, no further information has been provided regarding her death.

    The World Health Organisation (WHO) stated that the person who died from the rare H3N8 subtype of avian influenza had various pre-existing health conditions and had been in contact with live birds.

    In China, sporadic cases of bird flu among humans are frequent as avian flu viruses are prevalent among the large populations of domesticated and wild birds. The WHO mentioned that samples taken from a wet market that the woman visited before falling ill tested positive for influenza A(H3), indicating that this might have been where she contracted the infection.

    Although the H3N8 subtype of avian influenza is uncommon in humans, it is prevalent among birds and typically does not cause any noticeable symptoms in them. It has been known to also infect various other animals. The World Health Organisation (WHO) reported that no other individuals who were in close proximity to the woman were found to have been infected.

    A man in Dera Ismail Khan died of a heat stroke while collecting free flour in Baisakhi ground.

    The deceased’s father, a resident of Zafarabad Colony, informed the authorities that his son, Waqas, fell sick and began vomiting upon arriving home from the collection centre. He was immediately taken to District Headquarters Hospital, where unfortunately, he was declared dead on arrival. A medical professional at the hospital’s trauma center stated that the cause of death was heat stroke.

    As per Dawn, the individuals who had come to obtain free flour at the distribution site claimed that inadequate amenities were responsible for the fatality. They reported arriving in the morning and waiting in lines under the scorching sun throughout the day.

    Officials from food and revenue departments present at the distribution site were accused of distributing flour unfairly based on nepotism and favoritism. The individuals present also mentioned the absence of any facilities at the distribution center.

    Interim Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Mohsin Naqvi and Punjab Inspector General (IG) Dr Usman Anwar on Saturday jointly addressed the press conference, presenting their case that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) worker Ali Bilal lost his life in a car accident and not due to custodial torture by the Punjab police.

    Both of them claimed that PTI leadership had known the truth yet accused the Punjab government of Bilal’s death.

    CM Naqvi said that the Vice president of the PTI in Central Punjab Raja Shakeel informed PTI leader Yasmin Rashid that Bilal was hit by a car. Later, Rashid also informed the party about it at Zaman Park.

    He added that all the evidence will first be taken to Bilal’s family. He claimed that the PTI worker’s father was also offered money to stick to torture allegations.

    Naqvi asserted that the government will financially help the family.

    “I am accused of murder, is it that easy to level murder accusations on someone?” he asked, adding that the PTI is openly asking to file an FIR for the murder.

    Naqvi said he would have answered the accusations “in a different manner” had he not been in CM’s position.

    Addressing the presser, Punjab IG said that the people who brought Bilal to the hospital have been arrested and will be presented before a court.

    “Action will be taken if evidence of police torture is found,” the IG said.

    During the press briefing, confessional video statements of the two suspects, who are currently under police custody, were also played.

    On March 8, PTI workers were picked up by the police when a clash took place just before a scheduled election rally.

    Later, the party leadership claimed that Bilal was tortured and killed while in police custody. Bilal’s postmortem report, issued by the Mayo Hospital, says the victim suffered “massive blunt trauma”, while a fracture to his skull and subsequent bleeding has been cited as the cause of death. The report also noted damage to his liver, spleen and testes, which led to profuse bleeding.

    Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Senior Vice President Maryam Nawaz has condemned the death of Ali Bilal, a worker and supporter of rival party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) who lost his life allegedly at the hands of police on Wednesday when a clash took place in Lahore.

    Maryam extended her condolences to the deceased’s family, saying, “Aik siyaasi kaarkun ki jaan gayi, mujhe is cheez ka behaad afsos hai aur dili afsos hai” (I feel grief that a political worker lost his life).

    The PML-N leader also said that whatever has happened should be investigated.

    On Wednesday, on the call of PTI Chief Imran Khan, PTI workers came out on the roads, resulting in a clash between PTI workers and Lahore police at Zaman Park. PTI leaders claim that the administration is to blame for Ali Bilal’s death.

    During the interview with Adil Shahzeb, Maryam also said that now that ex-Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief Faiz Hameed has confessed, the establishment should take notice of his statement.

    “General Faiz will be held accountable by the institution itself,” she said.

    A District and Sessions Judge of Khyber district, Hidayatullah Khan, sentenced twice to death a man on the charges of killing his wife and her suspected paramour. A one million fine has also been imposed on him.

    On November 14, 2020, Zaiwar Shah was charged with killing his wife and her suspected lover Muhammad Ullah. Police were informed by his neighbours that the accused had murdered his wife, who was also his cousin, and her putative boyfriend at his home.

    After that, the police opened an inquiry into the occurrence and filed a case against the accused under Sections 302 and 311.

    The deceased were between the ages of 20 and 30.

    The accused’s daughter is the only eyewitness in the case, Senior Public Prosecutor Shafiullah told the court during the trial, and she testified that her mother was slain by her father.
    The girl was later referred to the Hayatabad Women’s Crisis Centre since her life was in danger, he informed the court.

    An 86-year-old bedridden man, Mohammad Sarwar, has finally succeeded in winning a civil lawsuit against police authorities implicated in the custodial murder of his son.

    Around 32 years after his son died at age 24, while in the custody of the police, he was carried onto the grounds of the Sindh High Court in a van to get the compensation check.

    According to Mr Sarwar’s attorney, this was the nation’s first-ever high court ruling on a lawsuit involving a custodial death.

    Despite the fact that all of the police officers were exonerated during the criminal procedures, Mr Sarwar filed a civil lawsuit before the SHC in 1991 seeking damages and compensation.
    The case was decided in 2017, and the SHC ordered the provincial government to pay the plaintiff the agreed-upon sum plus 10% interest from the day the claim was filed until the agreed-upon sum. As a result, the plaintiff submitted an application for execution in 2018; however, the provincial government filed an intra-court appeal, which was also rejected in April of this year.
