Sushant Singh Rajput’s suicide elicits three deaths

The untimely and tragic death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput has elicited three more deaths, including two suicides. According to reports, Sushant’s sister-in-law passed away from shock when she heard of his death, while two young fans committed suicide.

Sushant’s sister-in-law, Sudha Devi, the wife of his cousin, couldn’t bear the loss and breathed her last in Purnea district of Bihar while the actor’s last rites were being performed on Monday, in Mumbai, reported the Times of India.

A liver cancer patient, Sudha had reportedly stopped eating when she was informed about Rajput’s death by suicide. Family sources revealed that she kept weeping and recalling Sushant’s visit to his ancestral home last year.

“Sushant’s untimely demise virtually shook her from within. She could not bear the loss,” said a family member.

Meanwhile, a young fan of Sushant, who was suffering from depression, committed suicide a day after the actor’s death. According to reports, the 17-year-old girl allegedly hanged herself at her home in Patna after continuously watching the news of the actor’s suicide on TV.

The victim’s mother told the police that her daughter was in depression because she was not performing well in her examinations. She had been watching and reading about the actor’s suicide and death on TV and social media, despite her mother’s warnings and insistence to not watch it.

When her mother went to the terrace for a stroll, the girl hanged herself inside the bedroom.

“She tied her mother’s sari to the ceiling fan to commit suicide,” said a police officer, adding that though her mother and neighbours rushed her to the hospital, she was declared dead upon arrival.

Similarly, another fan of the actor committed suicide after he learnt of his demise.

Did not know of son’s depression, says Sushant’s father

While reports have stated that the Sushant was suffering from depression and was on medication, his father K K Singh told the police that his son would often feel “low” but he did not know that he was suffering from the illness.

A senior Mumbai Police official revealed that “the family informed us that they do not know why Sushant was depressed and also did not mention if they had any suspicion on anyone.”

The police are investigating Sushant’s suicide to ascertain what might have driven the young actor to end his life.

After the news of his death broke, Bollywood bigwigs stepped forth to extend their deepest condolences for the veteran actor who represented the Indian film fraternity in the West with films like Life of PiThe Namesake and Slumdog Millionaire.

He was admitted to Mumbai hospital on Tuesday after his health deteriorated.

Award-winning Indian actor and cancer survivor Irrfan Khan on Wednesday died in Mumbai after battling a medical complication arising from colon infection, his publicist confirmed.

He was 53 and is survived by his wife Sutapa Sikdar and two sons Babil and Ayan.

“‘I trust, I have surrendered’, these were some of the many words that Irrfan expressed in a heartfelt note he wrote in 2018 opening up about his fight with cancer. And a man of few words and an actor of silent expressions with his deep eyes and his memorable actions on screen,” Khan’s spokesperson stated.

“It’s saddening that this day, we have to bring forward the news of him passing away. Irrfan was a strong soul, someone who fought till the very end and always inspired everyone who came close to him. After having been struck by lightning in 2018 with the news of rare cancer, he took life soon after as it came and he fought the many battles that came with it. Surrounded by his love, his family for whom he most cared about, he left for heaven, leaving behind truly a legacy of his own. We all pray and hope that he is at peace. And to resonate and part with his words he had said, ‘As if I was tasting life for the first time, the magical side of it’,” the spokesperson added.

News of Khan’s death was also confirmed by director and his close friend Shoojit Sircar.

“My dear friend Irrfan. You fought and fought and fought. I will always be proud of you. We shall meet again,” he tweeted.

Khan, who spent most of 2018 and 2019 battling high-grade neuroendocrine tumour in London, is one of India’s finest actors who understood the syntax and grammar of Hollywood films.

The Indian National School Of Drama graduate was last seen in director Homi Adjania’s ‘Angrezi Medium’, a heart-warming father-daughter tale in March this year. But the film couldn’t enjoy an uninterrupted screening at cinemas worldwide because of the coronavirus outbreak. Even though his last film wasn’t allowed to blossom, Khan, who has appeared in over 100 Hindi and foreign language films, has charted a fruitful career filled with cinematic gems.

  • North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un reportedly dead after botched heart surgery

North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un reportedly dead after botched heart surgery

North Korea’s Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un has died, or is on his death bed with no hope for recuperation, multiple Chinese and Japanese media outlets have reported.

As per the details, a vice director of Hong Kong Satellite Television (HKSTV) — a Beijing-backed broadcast network in Hong Kong — claimed that Kim was dead, citing a “very solid source”. Her post on the Chinese messaging app Weibo has been shared widely on social media, according to a report in the International Business Times.

The claim comes hours after a Japanese magazine reported that the North Korean dictator was in a “vegetative state” ever since he underwent heart surgery earlier this month.

Other unconfirmed reports, attributed to senior party sources in Beijing, said an operation to insert a stent went wrong because the surgeon’s hands were shaking so badly.

The weekly Shukan Gendai reported Friday that a Chinese medic sent to North Korea as part of a team to treat Kim believed a delay in a simple procedure left the leader severely ill, Reuters reported.

A Chinese expert told the magazine that Kim, believed to be 36, clutched his chest and fell to the ground on a visit to the countryside earlier this month. A doctor accompanying Kim performed CPR and took him to a nearby hospital.

North Korean media hasn’t mentioned Kim’s health or whereabouts, even though reports by foreign media outlets have sparked international speculation about his well-being.

The hashtag #KimJongUndead continues to trend on Twitter without any proof of the leader’s death.

According to Independent, if rumours of Kim’s health are true, his sister, Kim Yo-jong, will emerge as the custodian of power in North Korea.

She is the youngest daughter of former supreme leader Kim Jong-il and an alternate member of the politburo — principal policymaking committee. Yo-jong is also the vice director of the Propaganda and Agitation Department of the Workers’ Party of Korea.

  • COVID-19 in Gilgit: Another health worker passes as region awaits Chinese help

Days after Dr Usama Riaz died due to coronavirus, another health worker in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) has passed away.

According to reports, 55-year-old Malik Ashdar was looking after suspected and confirmed coronavirus patients in Nagar district, but due to the lack of protective gear among health workers, he soon developed coronavirus symptoms. After spending a week in an isolation centre, he passed away on Sunday while his test reports came hours later, confirming his infection.

A number of health workers continue to perform their duties in the area without proper protective gear. There are currently 34 confirmed cases of the virus in the district, including 11 locally-transmitted cases, but health officials and residents suspect there could be more cases and have urged the federal government to ensure the provision of better facilities.

Muhammad Jamil, a local resident, told Pakistan Today that there are currently 100 suspects who are either waiting for their test results or are awaiting the test itself. When asked about Ashdar, he said that the health worker was not given proper treatment in the isolation centre.

Although his test results came positive, the GB Information Department is yet to confirm his death as the second coronavirus casualty in the area.

The report also quoted an official of the GB Health Department as saying that due to the non-availability of testing kits, no suspected patient was tested in the past three days. The official said that the National Institute of Health (NIH) in Gilgit has limited resources and the fact that samples have to be sent there manually also causes a delay in treating patients effectively. However, he added, China’s assistance in this regard would enable GB to conduct more tests.

  • Iconic Maggi noodles are no more

Iconic Maggi noodles are no more

The iconic Maggi noodles that introduced the concept of convenience food to many in Pakistan, have been shut down in the country, Profit has reported.

According to reports, Nestlé — the company that owns the brand and manufactures the product — has confirmed that they will no longer be marketing the instant noodles with which at least two generations of Pakistanis grew up.

“Yes, we discontinued Maggi by the end of 2018. The divestment is part of Nestlé’s strategy to manage its multi-product portfolio,” the report quoted an official as saying on the condition of anonymity.

Nestlé Pakistan has made no public announcements about the matter, and Maggi noodles remain listed as a product on the company’s website. However, the product is conspicuously absent from the 2018 annual financial statements of the company. There was no explicit mention of a discontinuation; it was just listed as a product offering on the 2017 report, and not listed on the 2018 report.

When it was first launched in Pakistan in 1992, Maggi was the only brand of noodles in the country and had a complete monopoly for the first year of its production. And while Unilever quickly launched its Knorr brand of instant noodles in 1993, Maggi was the market leader and, for the most part, remained so for the next two decades.

Over the past four years, however, Maggi went from being the market leader in its category to being almost completely wiped out from the country. Sources inside the company confirmed to Profit that the current stock of Maggi in stores is all that is left. Once it is gone, there will be no more.

Among other reasons behind Maggi’s death are the food safety scare in India from a few years ago – one that turned out to be a false alarm – and losing market share to Knorr even before that scare. Unilever, it seems was much better at localisation than Nestle was, the report said, adding that as a result, Unilever’s product was able to continue gaining market share from Nestle, and was therefore well-positioned to become the market leader by the time Maggi met its demise.

  • Justice denied? Slain Naqeebullah Mehsud’s father passes away awaiting justice

Slain South Waziristan youth Naqeebullah Mehsud’s father, Muhammad Khan, on Monday passed away at Combined Military Hospital (CMH) Rawalpindi after a long battle with cancer; still awaiting justice for his son.

Khan was admitted to CMH Rawalpindi seven months ago and the body of the deceased will be sent to Waziristan later in the day.

Khan had gathered the support of not only his son’s peers, but also political leaders, government officials and rights’ activists ever since the extra-judicial killing of his son by “encounter specialist” of the Sindh, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rao Anwar.

On January 13 last year, Mehsud was killed in a fake encounter carried out by a police team headed by then Malir SSP Anwar in Karachi. On January 17, his body was handed over to his relatives at the Chhipa Welfare Association morgue in the metropolis.

The fake encounter had sparked countrywide protests against extrajudicial killings in the country and to bring Anwar to justice.
