Areeba Habib defends Diwali celebration after social media backlash

Actress and model Areeba Habib has defended celebrating Diwali as netizens train guns at her for participating in the Hindu festival earlier this month.

As per the details, Areeba celebrated Diwali with friends, including famous designer and actor Deepak Perwani, and shared pictures from the event on her social media accounts, drawing strong reactions from fans.

Appearing as a guest on After Hours with Ushna Shah, Areeba addressed the backlash she faced.

“Recently, I posted something and received a lot of backlash. It was about Diwali. I feel like we live in a country where people from many different backgrounds live… Christians, obviously Hindus, and all of us together. There are so many things we share culturally,” she said.
Defending her decision, Areeba said that celebrating someone else’s joy shouldn’t be controversial.

“If you go and participate in someone’s happiness and enjoy with them a little, what’s wrong with that? They don’t have anyone here. They are far away from their families and loved ones. For them, this is home. We are the ones who can make them feel included. And yet, people have a problem with this,” the Jalan actress said.

She also revealed how she celebrated Christmas with her Christian staff and decorated a Christmas tree at home. “I do it because a lot of my staffers are Christian. I celebrate with them too… I put up a Christmas tree at home. Even for that, people have things to say. I believe we are Muslims, Alhamdulillah, but as human beings, we should at least respect and celebrate others’ happiness. Nobody is telling you to convert or do anything drastic… just participate in their joy.”

Areeba also addressed the negative comments she often receives online, sharing how she has learned to deal with trolls.

“As parents, it’s our responsibility to teach our kids that if you can’t say something nice to someone, then don’t say anything at all. My brother once told me, ‘Think of them as people who are venting their frustrations because they have nothing else to do.’ These people have cheap internet packages in Pakistan. They get a package for 200 or 100 rupees and just spend their time trolling online. That becomes their achievement… to get a reply from public figures like us. When we reply, they feel like they’ve accomplished something major. They feel victorious, thinking they’ve taught us a lesson,” she said.

To a question about how important it was to have a mentor or someone who guides you in the industry, Areeba said it was crucial because if someone brought you into the industry and taught you a little, it gave you a good direction to proceed.

“As a new person, when you enter, you have no idea whom to talk to or what to say. Half the time, people assume you’re begging for work. But I don’t see anything wrong with asking for work. Asking for work is a good thing. It’s saying, ‘I have talent, I can do this, please check if I’m suitable.’  This used to happen a lot more in the past. Back then, we had people like Frieha Altaf and many others who would provide such guidance,” she said.

Deepak Perwani sparks outrage for fat-shaming journalist on live chat

It’s 2020 and Pakistani celebrities are still guilty of fat-shaming. Last week it was Amna Ilyas and this week it’s fashion designer Deepak Perwani.

In an Instagram live session with Hassan Sheheryar Yasin, Deepak while talking about fashion critics – including journalist Aamna Isani – had said: “Are they critics or the people who take money? They post reviews for money, even on Instagram”.

On referring to her, he said, “Agar front pay na behtao to moti shor kar rahi hoti hai, motiyan shor kar rahi hoti hain kay free ka bag nahi mila.”

“80% of the reviews are favourable to the people that they like,” he added.

Later, when asked to share his thoughts on the Lux Style Awards, Deepak said: ” We don’t allow you to nominate us, who are you to dominate us? Apnay kapray toh dekho. Kya pehan kar ati ho. Humay baatao gi kay kapray kya hotay hain.

“You [Hassan] said this to me: ‘That woman, she doesn’t even know how to wear clothes herself and she is going to write a review about my clothes. She doesn’t even know what she is talking about’.”

“These are your words from five years ago,” Deepak said to Hassan.

Soon after the video from the live session went viral, social media users lashed out at Deepak for fat-shaming.

Interestingly, just a few days back, Aamna had lauded Deepak’s new upcoming collection Shalimar.

Following the backlash, Deepak apologised to Aamna for his comments.

“I’m not the kind of person who would body shame anyone,” wrote the designer on Twitter. “My sincerest apologies for my choice of words. It just happened and was not meant to hurt anyone’s sentiments.”

Deepak’s close friend designer Maheen Khan also encouraged everyone criticising to accept the apology and move on from the incident.

Renowned designer Asim Jofa, who stepped forward to help the government procure protective suits, has delivered the first batch of protective suits to the team of Dr Seemin Jamali at Jinnah Post Graduate Medical Center (JPMC).

The designer shared the announcement on social media along with a slideshow of his team delivering the suits to the hospital and Dr Seemin inspecting them.

Jofa on March 28 had announced that he and his team have taken the “initiative to contribute to society and play our part in helping our front liners win this fight against coronavirus.” He said that his company had started working on stitching protective gear for doctors and medical staff to wear for their safety.

The designer shared updates throughout the process.

The designer asserted that he and his team stand with the nation and the Government of Pakistan in these testing times.

In an interview with a daily publication, Asim shared that he got the idea about producing these suits after he read a story on Bloomberg about how there was a shortage of PPE in Italy and Spain.

“It got me thinking about the situation in my own country,” he says.

Jofa has produced two types of PPE: fawn and white coloured ones. The fawn-coloured suits are for the use of doctors working in wards and the white ones are for doctors working in intensive care units or the special isolation wards. The designer explained that the white suits have 3M layering, making them able to be washed and reused up to 15 times while the fawn ones are only for five-time use.

Jofa’s initiative prompted other designers including Maheen Khan and Deepak Perwani to do the same and help produce PPE for healthcare workers who are putting their lives on the line to combat the pandemic.

Meanwhile, Deepak Perwani also shared the first look of the washable/reusable and disposable suits he has made.

There is a dire shortage of protective medical gear in the country and across the world and designers all over the world from Louis Vuitton to Ralph Lauren are stepping up to meet the demand.

COVID-19: Deepak Perwani offers to manufacture protective gear

Following Asim Jofa, renowned fashion designer Deepak Perwani has offered to produce Personal Protective Gear for the medical staff and volunteers who are fighting against coronavirus on the frontlines. Perwani’s announcement comes after Sindh Governor Imran Ismail discussed with him the importance of locally produced equipment.

Governor Ismail on Wednesday had said that doctors, nurses, paramedical staff and volunteers are fighting on the frontlines against coronavirus, so every step will be taken to ensure their safety and well-being.

He said this while talking to a four-member delegation led by Deepak Parwani, representing the fashion designing and textile industry who had called on him at the Governor House.

Local production of protective gear against the coronavirus pandemic, the needs of the Corona Relief Tiger Force announced by the prime minister, less dependence on imported items and other matters of mutual interest were discussed in the meeting.

Governor Ismail said that the personal protective gear for health care professionals is very important, and due to the difficulties in its availability, the local production of such gear would be encouraged by the government.

He asked for the details of the planned local manufacture of protective gear, assuring that he would personally look into the issue and facilitate them.

Meanwhile, Perwani said that the textile and fashion designing industry considered it their national duty to provide whatever was required to facilitate the health professionals and volunteers in the challenging times faced by the country.

Other members of the delegation included Kehkashan Saiyed, Furqan Riaz and Shozaib Kapadia.

Other brands like Lulusar has also announced to manufacture medical protective suits for the medical staff.
