While details of their meeting are still unknown, it is likely that the two met at TIME Magazine’s Mental Health Luncheon: A Blueprint for Solving the Youth Mental Health Crisis. Sharmeen had thanked TIME in her caption.

According to the publication, “The event [luncheon] will convene some of the world’s most prominent experts and leaders. The event will feature a keynote interview with internationally-acclaimed actor and mental health advocate Deepika Padukone, who TIME named to the TIME 100 list of the most influential people in the world in 2018″.

Deepika also received the esteemed Crystal Award at Davos this year for her work on spreading awareness about mental health.

Deepika’s Chappak is based on the true story of an acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal. The film sheds light on the plight of the survivor and her journey towards her healing and growth. Sharmeen’s documentary Saving Face was also based on the same lines.

A few days prior to meeting Deepika, Sharmeen also met George Clooney with whom she discussed film and activism. We’re not sure if the two met at Davos or elsewhere.

Deepika Padukone delivers heartening speech on mental health at Davos

Deepika Padukone is on a mission to make the world a better place.

After standing in solidarity with students of New Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) who were protesting after masked assailants wielding batons and iron rods attacked the university leaving more than two dozen injured, she delivered a powerful speech on mental health at the the World Economic Forum in Davos. The actor received the Crystal Award at the annual event for her work on spreading awareness about mental health.

The actor spoke about her mental illness journey at the event saying she had a love-hate relationship with it, and highlighted that depression and anxiety were common illnesses that could be treated.

“My love and hate relationship with this has taught me a lot and I want to tell everyone suffering from this that you are not alone.”

“Depression is a common, yet serious illness. It is important to understand that anxiety and depression is like any other illness and treatable. It was experience with this illness that encouraged me to set up Live Love Laugh,” she said, while speaking about her foundation. Deepika was diagnosed with depression in 2014.

Highlighting the impact mental illnesses have people and on the economy, she said, “One trillion dollars is the estimated impact of depression and mental illness on the world economy. In the time it has taken me to accept this award, the world has lost one more person to suicide”.

Padukone, who received the award on Martin Luther King Jr Day, also quoted the civil rights activist in her acceptance speech.

“For in the words of Martin Luther King, everything that is done in this world is done with hope,” she said.

Padukone started voicing her opinion on the importance of mental health through her foundation The Live Love Laugh Foundation in June 2015.

Through the program, the actor launches nationwide awareness as well as destigmatisation campaigns. The foundation raises awareness about adolescent mental health disorders and organises training sessions, research and lecture series that feature some of the best known thinkers and achievers.

Padukone was last seen in biographical drama Chhapaak, which she also produced. Directed by Meghna Gulzar, the movie is based on real-life acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal, who was attacked in 2005 at the age of 15.

Award-winning filmmakers Anurag Kashyap couldn’t praise Deepika enough.

Others defended the actor after people claimed that this was a publicity stunt on her behalf because her film Chappak is releasing this Friday.

Meanwhile, others commented that she has more guts than all the Khans combined.

After BJP spokesman Tajinder Pal Singh called for a boycott of Deepika’s film #ISupportDeepika began to trend on Twitter.

Previously, in a media interaction when asked about the ongoing protests, Deepika had said that she is proud that the students are not scared of expressing themselves.

“I feel proud about it that people are coming out – be it on the streets or wherever they are – they are raising their voice and expressing themselves as it is important. If we want to see change in life and society, it is important that a point of view be put forward,” Deepika had said.

On Sunday masked assailants wielding batons and iron rods attacked JNU leaving more than two dozen injured. According to an Indian journalist, the masked mob was linked to a BJP linked student group. They barged into hostel rooms and assaulted left-wing students and also beat up visually impaired people. There were reports that they were carrying acid as well.

Deepika’s presence at the protest signifies that she is most likely standing with them in protest of these BJP-linked attacks and not the tuition fees hike protests that had been happening at the university earlier. The hostel fee hike is an ongoing issue and protests were held against it previously.

Following the attack, several Bollywood personalities including Vishal Bharadwaj, Anurag Kashyap, Zoya Akhtar, Dia Mirza, Rahul Bose, Richa Chadha and Taapsee Pannu led hundreds of people in a peaceful protest against the violence.

Apart from that, Alia Bhatt also condemned the incident.

As did Anil Kapoor, who while speaking to reporters had said, “It has to be condemned. It was quite sad, shocking, what I saw. It was very disturbing. I couldn’t sleep the entire night, thinking what has happened. It has to be condemned. Nothing will come out of violence. Whoever did this, they should be published.”
