    Reduced electricity prices to spur industrial activity and improve exports: Power minister

    Following a reduction in electricity prices for industries, Power Minister Sardar Awais Leghari stated that the government’s decision aims to boost industrial activity and exports.

    Speaking to the media in Dera Ghazi Khan, Leghari highlighted the government’s revolutionary measures to improve the power distribution system. He underscored the government’s commitment to addressing power sector issues, including combating electricity theft.

    Leghari reiterated the goal of eradicating electricity theft nationwide to provide cheaper electricity to the public.

    He also noted the government’s achievement in reducing electricity rates for industries by Rs10.69, which is expected to stimulate industrial activity and generate more job opportunities.

    The minister assured that the government is aware of the challenges faced by farmers and is actively working to provide maximum relief to the public.

    In a related development, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced on Saturday that government institutions incurring massive losses would be shut down.

    During his address to the nation, the premier stated, “I have decided to close institutions that have become a burden instead of offering assistance,” and added that a ministerial committee has been formed to oversee this process.

    “I will come to you with a new message in a couple of months,” PM Shehbaz said. “I believe this will be a significant step in reducing expenses and saving funds.”

    The premier also mentioned his recent trips to China and the Middle East, noting that commitments for investment were secured during these visits.

    A young girl has complained of being sexually assaulted and blackmailed by two male teachers at Ghazi University in Dera Ghazi Khan.

    The details of the incident were shared by Geo News on Tuesday, after a video of the victim started circulating on social media. In the video, the girl states the names of two physics teachers from her university, who “kept her in the hostel with them overnight”.

    She added that the suspects are now blackmailing her younger sister and if action is not taken against them, she would self-immolate.

    Later the university responded to the video, clarifying that the case is four months old and the suspects have been suspended. The university further added that the video statement is now being used by those teachers in the university against whom inquiries are going on for malpractice cases on campus. This video has been made viral by them, at a time when admissions are on the rise to tarnish the reputation of the university, the statement claimed.

    The university also shared an image of an official notice, dated May 5, 2023, which stated that the two implicated professors, Dr. Zafar Wazir and Dr. Khalid Mehmood Ur Rehman, have been suspended from their duties.

    Lucky Motor Corporation Limited (LMC) shocked the automotive industry in Pakistan with a surprise announcement on Monday. In a press release issued on the same day, LMC revealed its decision to close four of its dealerships in the country, effective immediately.

    The affected dealerships include Kia Motors Hanna Lake in Quetta, Kia Motors Chenab in Gujrat, Kia Motors Avenue in Dera Ghazi Khan, and Kia Motors Gateway in Mardan. While the announcement was unexpected, LMC emphasized its commitment to transparency and customer-centric practices by informing all its customers promptly.

    Curiously, the press release did not provide a specific reason for the abrupt decision. It comes as a puzzling move for LMC, considering the company’s positive performance in 2023. In contrast to its competitors experiencing declining sales, LMC saw a significant boost in sales during the same period.

    According to Mettis Global, Kia Sportage, one of the company’s popular models, saw a notable 4 per cent increase in total sales Month-over-Month (MoM). Furthermore, LMC managed to sell impressive numbers of other models, with 163 Picantos, 53 Stonics, and 72 Sorentos sold in February 2023 alone.

    The closure of these dealerships raises questions among industry experts and customers alike, as the company’s sales figures seemed to indicate a flourishing business. However, without a clear explanation from LMC, speculation continues to circulate regarding the true motives behind this unexpected decision.

    A man in Dera Ghazi Khan raped a woman at Rajanpur wagon stand. The woman who had come from Multan to drop off her son and hand him over to her husband in Kotmithan was raped by a van driver who took her to Rajnapur wagon stand.

    The Kotmithan police have registered a rape case against the man.

    What happened?

    The 35-year-old woman in the first information report (FIR) said that she travelled from Multan to hand over her son to her husband, with whom she had some differences, in Kotmithan.

    She wanted to send her son with the van driver alone, but as he began to cry, she had to go with him.

    She further said that they arrived in Kotmithan at 10:30pm. She handed over her son to his father. Her husband and son then left.

    After the woman was alone in Kotmithan, the bus driver said to her that there will be no bus available for Multan till morning. He invited her to spend the night at his sister’s home in Rajanpur. The van driver took her to Rajanpur wagon stand and raped her and fled from the scene.

    The police are investigating the matter.

    During a three-and-a-half-year tenure, former Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Usman Buzdar transferred over 3,000 officers in violation of both the tenure policy and the Supreme Court’s (SC) judgment in the Anita Turab case, reports The News.

    In Anita Turab’s case, the apex court barred the government from transferring officers before the completion of their tenure.

    In the Anita Turab case, the SC had laid down the several principles to save the government servants from politicisation. Appointments, removals and promotions must be made in accordance with the law and the rules. Secondly, when the ordinary tenure for a posting has been specified in the law or rules made thereunder, such tenure must be respected.

    According to the news outlet, there have been no suo moto notices and no punishments for the violators.

    Moreover, it has been reported that the Buzdar government transferred around 1,100 secretaries, Director Generals (DG), commissioners, Deputy Commissioners (DC) and additional deputy commissioners in Punjab.

    In the Police Department, there were more than 1,900 senior police officials, including Deputy Inspector General (DIGs), regional police officers, city police officers, district police officers and Sub-Divisional Police Officers (SDPOs), who were transferred.

    The record reveals that Lahore, Gujranwala, Pakpattan and Dera Ghazi Khan were the major districts that were the focus of these changes where maximum numbers of transfers and postings occurred.

    It is pertinent to mention that during Buzdar’s tenure Punjab saw five chief secretaries and seven inspectors generals of police which has never happened before.

    In 36 districts of Punjab, the Buzdar government transferred 198 deputy commissioners in three and a half years. On average, 5.5 DCs were changed in every district during the PTI-led government.

    Dera Ghazi Khan and Gujranwala are the two districts where the maximum number of DCs were changed.

    In DG Khan and Pakpattan, some DCs were transferred within three months. Waqas Rashid was transferred within three months as DC Dera Ghazi Khan and Nauman Yousaf was transferred in three months as DC Pakpattan.

    Minister of State for Climate Change Zartaj Gul on Saturday was received by agitated constituents who reportedly forced her to leave before she could continue with her agenda of addressing them, while a shoe garland was also placed on an inauguration plaque bearing her name.

    According to media reports, the minister, who was visiting the constituency after over a year, was not allowed by the agitated constituents in Fort Monroe to sit with them or deliver her address.

    “‘Tamatar lay aao [bring the tomatoes]’ they shouted after which the police escorted her [Gul] away,” a reporter affiliated with GNN said, adding that the constituents also raised slogans against the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

    Sharing details of the shoe garland, he said it was placed on an inauguration plaque bearing the minister’s name in the Choti Bāla town of Dera Ghazi Khan.

    “This is not the first time a representative of the people has been treated like this by the locals for returning to the constituency after a long time,” the reporter maintained, adding that earlier a Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) lawmaker from Dera Ghazi Khan, Jamal Leghari, also had to face embarrassment upon his return.

    Gul has been a member of the National Assembly since August 2018 and is the first woman to be elected to the parliament from the mainly conservative Dera Ghazi Khan area of Punjab.
