    Fashion weeks have lost their charm, says HSY

    Hassan Sheheryar Yasin (HSY), in a recent interview with The Current, agreed that recent fashion weeks have lost their charm.

    Responding to a question on if he thinks fashion weeks have lost their charm, HSY said: “I do. Fashion weeks have lost their charm because everyone looks alike now. All shows are sticking to the same formula now.”

    “I think all shows should have a different identity because two shows with similar choreography, background and format would leave people bored,” he continued.

    “The spice in fashion is diversity,” added the designer.

    When asked which fashion statement he thinks need to be thrown out of the window, HSY said: “A fashion statement is your self-reflection. If I tell you to throw something out of the window, then that’s not your self-reflection. I don’t believe in trends, trends are what you like.”

    “If you think a statement is good for you, do it,” he added.

    Later, while responding to a question on if the fashion industry is a toxic place, HSY said: “I’ve heard that working at a grocery store is also very toxic. I’ve heard that a fight between your aunts at home is also very toxic. I’ve heard that if two people get into a fight while changing a car’s tyres at a workshop, even that is very toxic.”

    “Toxicity is where you find it,” said the designer. “And peace is where you find it. If you find peace in where you are, it’s not [toxic].”

    “I think people should talk less and work more,” he added.

    Meanwhile, HSY also shared that he does not tire of dressing Reema because “she is not only beautiful but she is also very appreciative”.

    HSY, during the interview, also gave a tour of his new studio in Lahore, shared details of his fan moment with Tom Cruise, and opened up on how he deals with controversies when people pass unwarranted statements during his talk shows.

    Congratulations are in order for Ali Xeeshan and wife Myrah who have welcomed a baby boy. The couple announced the joyful news on social media with a picture of themselves with their bundle of joy.

    “Meet Jansher Ali,” wrote the designer on social media. “God has blessed us with a baby boy.”

    Sharing the same picture, Myrah said: “Purest form of love and joy! Shukar Alhumdulillah.”

    Ali and Myrah tied the knot in an intimate affair in November 2019. Earlier this month, Myrah debuted her baby bump at the Hum Bridal Couture Week 2021 as she walked the ramp alongside her husband in a pale yellow outfit.

    Did you know Pierre Cardin also designed uniforms for PIA?

    Legendary French fashion designer Pierre Cardin passed away at the age of 98 on Tuesday at a hospital in Neuilly in western Paris.

    Confirming the news, his family in a statement said: “It is a day of great sadness for all our family. Pierre Cardin is no more. Italian by birth, Pierre Cardin never forgot his origins while bringing unconditional love to France.”

    Despite coming from a lower middle-class background, Cardin managed to make big name for himself in the fashion industry, particularly in the 1960s and ’70s, when he upended traditional fashion with his futuristic, avant-garde looks. He became known for his visionary creations, shaking up fashion with bubble dresses and geometrical designs.

    During that time, Cardin also made contributions to the Pakistani fashion industry and designed uniforms for Pakistan International Airline’s (PIA) staff. According to the website history of PIA, uniforms designed by Cardin were the official uniform of PIA’s staff from 1966 to 1975.

    “In 1966, Pierre Cardin, the renowned French fashion designer, came up with the legendary fawn colour uniform for summer and moss green uniform for winter,” reads a post on the website. “The uniform consisted of a short, easy fitting “A” line tunic, slim-line trousers and imaginatively moulded dupatta that not only covered heads but also turned heads.”

    “The uniform became an instant hit and the slim-line trousers were dubbed as ‘PIA Pajamas’. Fashion-conscious young ladies, all across Pakistan, copied Cardin’s design eagerly,” it adds.

    The cabin crew of the all-new local Pakistani airline, AirSial, will be wearing the uniforms designed by Nomi Ansari.

    Ansari, who is renowned for his aesthetically-pleasing designs, took to Instagram to announce the news.

    “We are delighted to announce our affiliation with AirSial,” wrote the designer. “As the airline is set to spread its wings, we have designed a range of sleek yet stylish uniforms for its crew members.”

    AirSial also made the announcement about their affiliation with the designer on its Twitter account.

    “It is with immense pleasure AirSial announces, that Pakistan’s topmost performing designer in the fashion industry known for his exceptional and astounding dresses, having bagged countless awards has designed uniforms for us and it is none other than Nomi Ansari the styling icon of Pakistan,” read the post.

    “We would like to thank Nomi Ansari for his tremendous and tireless effort in shaping our uniforms to the international standards giving them the most modest image matching our culture and traditions,” it further added. 

    The airline, which is expected to start its operations from mid-December, was inaugurated today (Wednesday) by Prime Minister Imran Khan in Sialkot.

    Unmasked model tests positive for COVID-19 days after walking the ramp

    Model Farwa Ali Kazmi tested positive for COVID-19 less than a week after walking the ramp for Hussain Rehar’s solo show in Lahore. According to writer and stylist Haiya Bokhari, the model “frolicked sans mask throughout the event” after assuming it was seasonal flu.

    “Super-spreader event but make it fashion,” wrote Bokhari on Twitter.

    Later it emerged that the model in question was Farwa Kazmi, who announced in an Instagram story that she has tested positive for coronavirus and is in quarantine.

    She also advised people who were in contact with her or husband Ali to quarantine themselves.

    “All those with cough, body aches and headaches but no fever, please get yourself tested. I had delayed it thinking its seasonal cold but it’s not,” added the model.

    Farwa further said that she thinks she got it by “sharing food and cigar with a COVID-positive”.

    The model also shared her quarantine experience.

    Designer Hussain Rehar had organised a solo fashion show in Lahore in which he showcased his traditional wedding-wear. The show was a glamorous event attended by celebrities, critics and socialites.

    According to details, Hussain’s brides, bridegrooms and a colourful entourage of baraatis twirled to the tunes of popular wedding songs and the beats of the shehnai played out by a live wedding band, enacting the events that are inherent to the big fat Pakistani wedding.

    Minister of State for Climate Change Zartaj Gul in an exclusive interview with The Current revealed that her favourite Pakistani designers include Maria B, Sana Safinaz and Khaadi.

    When asked who her favourite clothing brand is, the minister, who herself in a textile designer, said: “In Pakistan, all designers are my favourite. I wear a single colour tone so, whoever I find locally…either Maria B, Sana Safinaz, Khaadi or whatever I like.”

    She continued, “As for global brands, I think Devil Wears Prada, Fendi, Michael Kors. All of them are good if just not too expensive.”

    It is pertinent to add here that the minister was referring to Prada when she said ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ – which is a film starring Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt.

    Meanwhile, when asked about what she prefers to watch on Netflix, Zartaj said that whenever she gets the time, she watches English movies.

    “Whenever I get the time, I watch English movies. [In fact], any good movie. But I do not have enough time,” said Zartaj.

    She continued, “Seasons I have followed very rarely too; I followed Prison Break, Lost. But if it’s some Oscar-winning movie, I try to watch it on Netflix if I get the time.”

    Zartaj also shared a list of her favourite Pakistani actors which include Mahira Khan, Fawad Khan, Shaan, Resham and Sajal Aly.

    COVID-19: Deepak Perwani offers to manufacture protective gear

    Following Asim Jofa, renowned fashion designer Deepak Perwani has offered to produce Personal Protective Gear for the medical staff and volunteers who are fighting against coronavirus on the frontlines. Perwani’s announcement comes after Sindh Governor Imran Ismail discussed with him the importance of locally produced equipment.

    Governor Ismail on Wednesday had said that doctors, nurses, paramedical staff and volunteers are fighting on the frontlines against coronavirus, so every step will be taken to ensure their safety and well-being.

    He said this while talking to a four-member delegation led by Deepak Parwani, representing the fashion designing and textile industry who had called on him at the Governor House.

    Local production of protective gear against the coronavirus pandemic, the needs of the Corona Relief Tiger Force announced by the prime minister, less dependence on imported items and other matters of mutual interest were discussed in the meeting.

    Governor Ismail said that the personal protective gear for health care professionals is very important, and due to the difficulties in its availability, the local production of such gear would be encouraged by the government.

    He asked for the details of the planned local manufacture of protective gear, assuring that he would personally look into the issue and facilitate them.

    Meanwhile, Perwani said that the textile and fashion designing industry considered it their national duty to provide whatever was required to facilitate the health professionals and volunteers in the challenging times faced by the country.

    Other members of the delegation included Kehkashan Saiyed, Furqan Riaz and Shozaib Kapadia.

    Other brands like Lulusar has also announced to manufacture medical protective suits for the medical staff.
