    Five must-have desserts in Lahore

Stressed spelt backwards is desserts and nothing better than something sweet and delicious to make your day. Being a hard-core foodie with a very intense sweet-tooth, I love my desserts and pretty much spend all my money trying out new things. All through the year (and the pandemic), I have tried a vast variety of meetha from different home-based businesses and here are the ones I keep going back to.

Chocolate Chunk Cookies by Vanilla by Hafsa Zulfiqar

Without a doubt the best chocolate chip cookies I have had in Lahore. They are crispy on the outside but gooey on the inside and melt the moment they hit your mouth. The light dusting of sea salt adds to the flavour and I guarantee you that you will not stop at one. Priced at Rs 180 (without tax), they are a steal given that they are pretty big in size too.

    Look at that chocolate!

Chocolate Brownie Dessert Box by Deliciuex

There are often times when you feel like having something cool and sweet which is not ice-cream. Something that you can eat while watching your favourite season. Something that feeds the soul. In those situations, the Chocolate Brownie Box by Deliciuex is ideal for you. The dessert box, which includes layers of brownies, fudge and mousse topped with a layer of crunchy biscoff, is the stuff of dreams. You will not regret trying this.

P.s. Deliciuex does amazing Lotus Milk Cake also.

    Frosti Ice-Cream

There is something very enjoyable about having cold ice-cream in the chilly weather. Frosti has one of the best gelatos the city has to offer and that too in a variety of flavours. Creamy, smooth and oh-so-delectable, Frosti is a must-try for those who love to spend their winters curled up in front of the television watching their favourite show.

Our picks – Salted Caramel, Oreo Crunch and Belgian Chocolate

Cheesecake (Lotus, New York) by The Sweet Rack

I was not a big fan of cheesecakes till I tried the New York Cheesecake by The Sweet Rack. While the cream is rich and absolutely delicious, it was the base that set it apart from other cheesecakes. It does not have your usual biscuit base – it has hints of walnuts and cinnamon which add so much flavour to the overall experience. Highly recommended. The Sweet Rack Lotus Cheesecake is also great and I am sure Lotus lovers will thoroughly enjoy it.

P.s. Their brownies are also divine.

    Donuts by Big Fat Rolls

Honestly speaking, I am a Dunkin Donuts loyalist. I have tried multiple donuts from multiple places at multiple food festivals but nothing came close to Dunkin for me…till I discovered Big Fat Rolls. Their donuts are ah-mazing: airy, soft and melt-in-your-mouth kind. My picks from their collection have to be Cherub Classic and Cupid Chocolate.

Note – Before someone attacks me for not including Layers, please note that these picks are from home-based businesses only.

Dawat but no gas? Here are some low heat dessert recipes

Easy and quick recipes that require no or less heat are the best solution during these cold no gas wintery days.  These easy recipes will also make lives easy of people at ‘shaadi wala ghar’.

    Banana Pudding

    Things you will need

    1 cup granulated sugar

    1/4 cup all-purpose flour

    1/4 teaspoon salt

    2 3/4 cups whole milk

    4 large egg yolks

    2 teaspoons vanilla extract

    3 tablespoons unsalted butter

    one packet marie biscuits

    4 sliced large bananas

    Procedure

Combine the sugar, flour, and salt and whisk them together. Gradually whisk in the milk until combined, then place the pan over very low heat.

    Heat the milk mixture, stirring
regularly, until thickened to a creamy salad dressing consistency and gently
bubbling for  8 to 12 minutes.

Whisk the milk mixture into the
yolks. While whisking the yolks vigorously, slowly drizzle in the milk mixture.

Return everything back to the low
heat for 2 minutes. Once combined, pour the mixture back into the saucepan and
place back over medium heat. It will be pale yellow. Stir constantly for 2
minutes . Remove from the heat. Stir in the vanilla and butter until melted and
combined. At this point, the mixture will be back to that creamy salad dressing
    consistency.

Make the first cookie layer with
marie biscuits, sliced bananas and the pudding. Repeat the layering process
once more with the remaining biscuits, bananas, and pudding.

Chill at least 2 hours. Cover the
baking dish with a sheet of plastic wrap (press it directly onto the pudding if
you don’t want a skin to form). Top with cream.

    No Bake Hot Cocoa Cake

    You’ll need:

    2
    cups of heavy cream

    1/2
    cup sour cream

    1/2
    cup confectioners’ sugar

    1/2
cup hot cocoa mix (use one without milk powder)

    1
    tsp pure vanilla extract

    1/4
    ts. kosher salt

    70 chocolate
wafer cookies (we used Famous Chocolate Wafers, about 1½ 9-ounce package)

    Procedure:

Using an electric mixer on high, beat the heavy cream, sour cream,
confectioners’ sugar, hot cocoa mix, vanilla, and salt in a large bowl until
    stiff peaks form.

Dab some of the cream mixture on one cookie and place it in the center
of a serving platter.Repeat with 6 cookies, arranging them around and touching
    the center cookie.

Spread half cup of the cream mixture on top, spreading over the
cookies, leaving a half inch border around the edge. Place a cookie in the
center of the cream and arrange 6 cookies around it. Repeat with half cup of
the cocoa cream and 7 cookies to make 10 layers of cookies total. Top with the
    remaining cream.

Refrigerate at least 2 hours and up to overnight. Sprinkle with
    crushed chocolate cookies before serving.

    Oreo Cookie Balls

    You’ll need:

    Packets
    of Oreo cookies

1(8 oz) package cream cheese, softened

    Pinch of salt

1(12 oz) packet chocolate chips, melted

    Procedure:

Use a food processor to crush cookies into fine crumbs.

Add crushed cookies to a medium bowl. Add cream cheese and and salt and stir until evenly combined.

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Using a small cookie
scoop, form mixture into small balls and transfer to prepared baking
    sheet.

Freeze until slightly hardened, about 30 minutes.

Dip frozen balls in melted chocolate until coated and return to
baking sheet. Sprinkle with remaining cookie crumbs. Freeze until chocolate
    hardens, about 15 minutes.

What you need to eat at Lahore Eat this weekend

You know you’re saying hello to winter when it’s time for food festivals. Just days after the smog somewhat settled and thandi hawa began to blow across Lahore, the first food event of the season, Lahore Eat, started with a bang at Jilani Park.

We visited the event on the first day and here are the only places you should visit at Lahore Eat:

DISCLAIMER: The Current’s food reviews are not sponsored and are unpaid.

Didn’t try this cheesecake but it sure looks lovely.

    Awesamosas

This fusion eatery never fails to disappoint – from their samosas to their chaats, we’re a fan. This year Awesamosas introduced a new ‘Botilicous Menu’ – Peri Patakha, Malai Tarragon and Satay Tikka – we absolutely loved. The strong flavour and spice level were perfect.

Price – Peri Patakha, Malai Tarragon Rs 150 per stick, Satay Tikka Rs 200 per stick

    Aladdin Foods

The bun in the bun kabab from Aladdin Foods was the real winner. It was crispy yet soft and took the entire snack to a whole new level. A must-try for anyone who enjoys street food and misses a good Karachi bun kabab.

    Price – Rs 80/-

Apart from these, the Lahore Eat also had a variety of local eateries – there was Urban Kitchen, Burns Road, Novu, Savour Foods, Bombay Chowpatty, Delish, Upper Crust etc, restaurants you can visit everyday, which didn’t have anything new to offer. Karachi beats Lahore quite often when it comes to the food festival wars but this year, Lahore Eat did not disappoint.

Send us your reviews and pictures and remember to take your masks along. You never know when the smog will strike.
