Dear male colleagues, Sherry Rehman has a message for you

Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Vice President and Parliamentary leader Sherry Rehman has highlighted a very common and a misogynistic issue women face in the workplace.

In her latest post on X (formerly Twitter), Rehman alluded to male professionals in Pakistan who discriminate in their manner of addressing female colleagues.

“I am sorry but I cannot allow myself to be called only “Sherry” if the colleagues next to me are called so and so sahibs along with their full names as a mark of respect.

I have no problem if you call me Sherry if you are calling my other male colleagues by their first names too”, she pointed out.

While men in workplaces are commonly referred to as ‘Sir,’ ‘Sahab,’ or by their full name out of respect for their professional status or simply their gender, women, on the other hand, are mostly called by their first name or derogatorily as ‘larki’ or ‘bibi,’ etc.

While professionally, calling someone by their first name is not inherently wrong, using more socially respectful language for men compared to women makes the practice sexist.

This lack of courtesy traditionally stems from the patriarchal idea of deeming women as intellectually and professionally inferior.

Merub Ali shut down criticism on her visit to a gurdwara

It’s 2023, can we please stop prying into religious beliefs? On Sunday, actress Merub Ali shared pictures on Instagram of her visit to Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib.

Some users responded with hateful rhetoric. Instagram commentators trolled the actress by claiming she wasn’t Muslim enough and that she wasn’t supposed to visit a Sikh temple. And honestly, we love the way Merub responded to a troll.

“News flash: ANYONE can go to a gurwara!! You should go to. The people were really kind there. Maybe you can learn a thing or two.”

We also have to appreciate how some users responded warmly to Merub’s visit, and encouraged others as well to visit the temple.

FIR registered against Muslim journalist for sharing video of Muslim boy slapped in class

Maulana Mahmood Asad Madani, president of Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind, visited Khabbapur village to meet the family of the Muslim boy who was slapped by his Hindu classmates on the teacher’s directions. A video of the incident went viral on social media, causing outrage on a wide scale.

“Today, the environment of the country has become so polluted that now security institutions and even schools, which are called the temples of knowledge, are falling prey to it,” said Maulana Mahmood.

He wrote to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, urging for strict action against the accused teacher.

Likewise, he has also written to the Union Minister for Women and Child Development, National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), National Human Rights Commission, National Minorities Commission.

In his letter, he stated, “You should instruct the concerned district administration to not try to cover up this serious matter by imposing minor clauses of the law.”

According to Geo news, Jamiat Ulema Hind has undertaken to sponsor the education of the Muslim child Muhammad Al-Tamish and the child has been admitted to an English medium school.

The organization has also made arrangements for the child’s travel facility and has also undertaken to bear the cost of the child’s education.

    Update on the case:

Uttar Pradesh Minority Commission has taken suo motu of the incident and has asked the District Magistrate of Muzaffarnagar and the Senior Superintendent of Police to send an eight-point report on the incident.

The commission has directed Muzaffarnagar BSA and teacher Tripta Tyagi to appear in Lucknow on September 6.

Meanwhile, an FIR has been registered against journalist Mohammad Zubair for sharing the video of the incident on social media.

Zubair told The Wire that an FIR had been lodged against him even though he had later deleted the video and notified his followers on social media site X (formerly Twitter).

According to The Wire, Zubair has been on the radar of right-wing forces including BJP-ruled state governments. He has been charged under Section 74 of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, which is punishable by imprisonment up to six months.

    School shut down

Neha Public School, where a teacher made students slap their Muslim class-fellow, has been shut down. According to Indian officials, the school “did not meet the education department’s criteria.”

Former students are to be shifted to other schools or a government school.

    Teacher in denial

Tripta Tyagi, the Indian teacher who was seen in a viral video asking her students to hit a “Mohammaden” student has denied making Islamophobic remarks against her Muslim student, stating that “it wasn’t my intention.”

She also justified urging the students to beat their classmate by claiming that she is handicapped and could not get up herself so, in order to discipline the student, she asked other kids to take the lead.

“I made a mistake by getting the child beaten up by the students. I am handicapped and could not get up, so I asked the students to beat the child. The video has been tampered with,” she alleged.

Tyagi said that she used the word Mohammaden in a sentence where she said that Muslim mother’s should not take their children to their relatives’ houses as they must study.

She also believes that in order to maintain discipline in the class, one has to take strict measures.

    The video

On Friday, a video circulated across social media in which a  school teacher, Trapta Tyagi, in Uttar Pradesh, India, is asking her students to slap a seven-year-old Muslim class fellow.

Apart from making Islamophobic remarks, she  can be heard prompting the students to hit the boy, Mohammad Altamash, harder: “I have declared that all Muslim children should go,” Tyagi says while a male voice behind the camera can be heard agreeing with the teacher, “You are correct, it ruins the education,”.

The student stands still, crying and scared, while the students, one by one, come forward to slap their classmate.

According to Al-Jazeera, Muslims constitute approximately a fifth of the 235 million population of Uttar Pradesh.

Al-Jazeera also spoke with Altamash’s parents, who said that the incident took place on Thursday in Neha Public School in Kubbapur village.

“Yesterday, my son came home crying,” Rubina, his mother, said. “He was traumatised. This is not how you treat kids.”

The father, Mohammad Irshad, is a farmer. He said that the teacher justified her actions by saying the boy did not memorise his lessons.
“My son is good at his studies. He takes tuitions. We fail to understand why the teacher treated him like this. It seems that the teacher is filled with hate,”

According to Al-Jazeera, Indian police have asked social media users not to share the video, persuading many users to remove it.
Irshad believes that the mistreatment of his son was the result of “hate that is being spread against Muslims in the country”.
Rubina also stated that the teacher reportedly would get her students slapped by their classmates and only a few days ago, another student from their family was put through a similar treatment after he failed to memorise his lessons.

In a video shared by an X (formerly Twitter) user, Irshad states, “I didn’t want to file a police complaint because I don’t want to be called by Police or by court every now and then,”

However, according to a  police officer, as reported by Al-Jazeera, a case will be filed after recording the statement of the child and the parents.

The school in question has students from the Hindu and Muslim communities in the area. And while the teacher has acknowledged her mistake and apologized for her misconduct, Irshad has firmly decided to admit his son to another school.

“She said she will never treat her students badly again,” he said. “But this is not the environment where I want my son to get an education and grow up in.”

  • CNN has exacerbated my ‘pain and suffering’, says Saima Mohsin

British-Pakistani journalist Saima Mohsin, has won the right to take her former employee, CNN, to a full tribunal at the London Central Employment Tribunal. As per her claims, she was unfairly dismissed and discriminated against following an injury she sustained on an assignment in Israel.

Previously, CNN claimed that Mohsin cannot bring the matter into a court in London under her contract but following a preliminary hearing last month, Judge Klimov ruled in Mohsin’s favour, allowing her to proceed with her case to sue CNN for negligence.

Saima Mohsin currently works with Sky News on a freelance basis and has a programme on ITV about living with invisible disabilities.

In 2014, Mohsin was reporting on the Israel-Palestine conflict from Jerusalem when her cameraman ran over her foot. This damaged her tissue, resulting in chronic pain, forcing her to walk with a stick and reducing her to work part-time only. Mohsin suffered from depression as a consequence. In 2017, CNN terminated her contract. As per a Guardian report, Saima had requested CNN if she could switch to a presenting role in order to reduce the amount of time spent travelling but she was told “You don’t have the look we are looking for”.

Later, according to Deadline.com, Mohsin “repeatedly indicated her willingness to settle outside of legal proceedings, but CNN has so far declined to do so”. She also said that the news network has exacerbated her “pain and suffering” by continuing with the legal action.

In her statement, Saima Mohsin said, “I have constantly offered reinstatement or mediation and negotiations. I didn’t ask for this battle while learning to deal with an invisible disability and rebuild my life. But it was important I take a stand.”

Pakistani transgender comedian and activist barred from using Emirates

Pakistani transgender activist and stand up comedian Anaya Rahimi took to Twitter to share that she was preventing from boarding an Emirates flight to Tunisia because of the X gender on her card, which signifies that she is a trans woman.

Describing the experience in an Instagram post, Rahimi said that the Emirates staff misbehaved with her, prohibiting her from travelling as trans people are not allowed to board their planes, despite her efforts to communicate with them.

“When I went to emirates check in Lahore @lahoreairport the @emirates staff there stopped me and insulted me first because of my gender they along with there manager used transphobic slurs and then told me that you cant travel as @emirates does not allow trangender people to travel. I tried my best to argue and make my case presented the email approval by emirates and told that I confirmed from headoffice too but they shut me down and asked guards to escort me out didn’t let me use my phone as well.”

Since the post went viral on Twitter, transgender activists like Shahzadi Rai, who was previously prevented from using FlyDubai because of her gender identity, condemned the airline and called for authorities to take action against the organisation.

Rai took to Twitter to share her experience with Fly Dubai stating that she and her Project Manager Zarish were barred from travelling from Karachi to Dubai because of her X gender.
The activist who works with the Gender Interactive Alliance narrated the incident in a video clip.

“We had a flight to attend our annual meeting, me and my project manager, Zarish. But they cancelled our ticket because we had written X in our gender category. This is extremely transphobic.”

In the next tweet, Rai shared a screenshot of her flight ticket and wrote that although transgender people are a part of mainstream community in other countries, it was shocking to witness Fly Dubai indulge in transphobic behavior.
“Transgender persons are part of the main stream in other countries but Fly Dubai doesn’t allow x-gender cards to travel, Transphobic behaviour by Fly Dubai, if they don’t allow us to travel on their plane, why did they issue a ticket.”

Since this post was uploaded yesterday, many transgender activists and otter public figures have criticized the airline. Transgender activists like Mehrub Moiz Awan and Hina Baloch slammed Fly Dubai on their twitter accounts, and have called for Pakistan’s Foreign Office to address the matter.

‘Give me back my right to live,’ Indian Muslim woman Bilkis Bano fearful after release of 11 men who gang-raped her

Bilkis Bano, an Indian Muslim woman who was gang-raped in the 2002 Gujarat riots, said that her peace has been taken away after the Gujarat government released her 11 rapists on Monday. Her rapists were released on August 15, i.e. Independence Day of India. They were convicted in 2008.

She has requested the government to reverse the decision.

“How can justice for any woman end like this? I trusted the highest courts in our land. I trusted the system, and I was learning slowly to live with my trauma. The release of these convicts has taken from me my peace and shaken my faith in justice,” said Bilkis in her statement.

“My sorrow and my wavering faith are not for myself alone but for every woman who is struggling for justice in courts,” she added.

“No one enquired about my safety and well-being, before taking such a big and unjust decision… Give me back my right to live without fear and in peace. Please ensure that my family and I are kept safe.”

    What happened with Bilkis Bano?

At the age of 21, Bilkis Bano was five months pregnant when she was brutally gang-raped in 2002 in Gujarat.

The 2002 Gujarata riots are considered one of the worst anti-Muslim riots in India that saw nearly 2,000 people — mostly Muslims — killed.

On March 3, 2002, Bilkis and her family members were attacked by about 30 people armed with sickles, swords, and sticks. Among the attackers were the 11 accused men.

Bilkis, her mother, and three other women were raped and brutally assaulted. Seven members of Bilkis Bano’s family, including her three-year-old daughter, were also murdered.

Bilkis is now in her 40s.

‘Censored for being trans’: Transgender rights activist barred from speaking at an event

Transgender rights activist Mehrub Moiz Awan was barred from speaking at TEDx International School Lahore (ISL) after some parents of students at the school came forward to complain about a transgender rights activist being included in the panel.

In a Twitter thread, Moiz wrote how the TEDx ISL admin informed her that she was being removed from the speaker’s panel because certain parents have stated that transgender individuals cannot speak to their children.

“I was informed that I am being removed from the speaker’s panel because some parents have stated that they can’t allow transgender people to speak to their kids. This is the International School Lahore btw. No objections to the talk, no additional censorship, just flat-out refusal because ‘parents ko aitraaz hai k koi transgender talk day’ were their exact words. Verbatim. Is this even legal? And if it is, is this censorship?” wrote Moiz.

Designer Maria B is also among those parents who complained about the activist being on the speaker’s panel.

Twitter is condemning the removal of Mehrub Moiz from the speaker’s panel. In solidarity, some other panelists have also decided to boycott the event.

‘He looks small, she looks elder’: Sima Taparia under fire for ageist, insensitive remarks on Priyanka Chopra-Nick Jonas

Sima Taparia of Indian Matchmaking fame is back with the second season of her show on Netflix. While several original cast members returned to the show, such as Pradhyuman Maloo, Aparna Shewakramani and Nadia Jagessar, the highlight of the season was the matchmaker rejecting Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’ pair.

In the second episode of the latest season, Taparia asks Jagessar about how her relationship with Shekhar, the bachelor she set her up with, is going. She told the matchmaker that despite giving multiple hints, she doesn’t feel he has the same feelings for her as she does for him. But Taparia knew the truth that Jagessar had flirted with another single at a party and she had not told Shekhar about it. The person whom she flirted with, Vishal, was seven years younger than her.

To prove that Jagessar’s relationship could work, Taparia jokingly gave the example of Chopra and Jonas who have an 11-year age gap. “But I don’t feel it’s a good match, sorry to tell them,” Sima said. She added, “Just they have married, but it’s not a good match. He looks so small and petite in front of her, and she looks elder.” Jagessar let out a shocked laugh in response to what the matchmaking aunty said on the show.

Chopra and Jonas tied the knot in 2018 in a grand Indian wedding after a whirlwind romance. Earlier this year the couple welcomed their first child via surrogate, a baby girl whom they named Malti Marie Chopra Jonas. Clearly, they’re doing just fine, regardless of what a random matchmaker says.

Netizens are calling out Sima for her ageist remarks.

Indian Matchmaking's Sima Taparia Dissing Priyanka Chopra-Nick Jonas' Match Due to Age Gap Riles Up Twitter

Last year Indian television actress Nausheen Ali Sardar, known for her role in Kkusum, revealed that Sima refused to find her a match because she’s Muslim.

In a recent interview, Nausheen said that she was “blatantly” told by Taparia that she doesn’t cater to Muslims or Catholics.

Speaking to Pinkvilla, Sardar said: “My family was insisting on getting me enrolled on a matrimonial site since the lockdown was going on, and I wasn’t even going on dates or anything as such. So they thought of approaching Sima Aunty, the famous marriage maker from the show Indian Matchmaking.”

“We were in for a shock when she blatantly told us on our face that she did not cater to Muslims or Catholics,” continued the actor.

“I mean it’s 2021! Yes, I am a Muslim, so what? I have an equal right too in society…I had gotten so annoyed at this that I put this entire bitter experience on her social media page where I had asked her to broaden her mindset,” said Sardar further, adding that she later took down the post on her family’s insistence as they feared that someone would try to hurt Nausheen.

In the same interview, Nausheen shared that this wasn’t the first time she had to face discrimination on the basis of her religion.

The actor shared that she was rejected by housing societies because ‘they do not give houses or flats in their building to Muslims.’

“I was shocked! It’s so important to respect every religion and if any society is going to be so rigid in their thoughts, it will be extremely difficult to survive there,” lamented Sardar.

Nausheen made her television debut with Ekta Kapoor’s hit soap opera, Kkusum in 2001.

LHC asks Punjab Govt to submit report over ‘discriminatory’ behaviour towards transgenders

The Lahore High Court (LHC) has issued notices to the Punjab government, chief secretary, and inspector general ordering them to submit a report on Punjab police’s “discriminatory” actions toward transgender people, Arshad Ali reports for Samaa News.

“Articles 4, 18, and 25 of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, 1973, provide a shield against any kind of discrimination especially in respect to a job or profession to earn a livelihood but the act of the respondents not to permit transgender persons to compete with the other applicants offends against the said provisions of the Constitution,” the court observed.

Sira Ashi, a transgender woman from Lahore, filed a court suit against the police earlier this month. She claimed that despite meeting all conditions, the Punjab police have been “discriminatory” in their treatment of transgender people by refusing to hire them.

The court also noted that the Transgender Persons Act, 2018, is not being implemented by public functionaries during the recruitment process. “Let notices be issued to the respondents (Punjab government, chief secretary, and inspector-general) with the direction to file their report before the next date of hearing,” Justice Khan directed.
