Police arrest man for throwing four children into canal after dispute over eid clothes

The police on Tuesday arrested a man in Faisalabad for throwing his four children into a canal at Sheikhupura Road.

According to details, the man had an argument with his wife four days ago over not having new Eid clothes for their children.

In a fit of rage, the man took the children and threw them into the canal. Meanwhile, he made his wife believe that he had left them with relatives, said the police.

When the children did not return, the mother after four days filed a complaint against her husband.

The police said that when they detained the man, “he confessed to the crime and said he had thrown them into the Bhhikhi canal”.

Maikan said that an operation to search the bodies of the children is underway.

  • Punjab ‘controls’ coronavirus numbers by sending lab staff on Eid holidays, resulting in less testing

Punjab ‘controls’ coronavirus numbers by sending lab staff on Eid holidays, resulting in less testing

The secret behind the sudden drop in number of new coronavirus cases being reported in Punjab has been revealed as journalist Amber Rahim Shamsi quoted Punjab Minister for Industries, Commerce, Investment and Skill Development Mian Muhammad Aslam Iqbal as saying that lab workers had been given Eid holidays, resulting in less testing.

After easing lockdown restrictions, Punjab has generously announced six Eidul Fitr holidays from May 22 to May 27, which means the rate of increase in the number of cases in Punjab started going down Friday as lab personnel, who had been working tough shifts since the outbreak began, started getting off work and heading home to celebrate Eid with their families.

The number of COVID-19 infections in Punjab, which increased from 13,914 to 14,584 from May 16 to May 18 and then 16,685 on May 20, stood at 18,455 on Friday with over a thousand cases being reported every day since May 17-18.

However, the same number on Saturday stands at 18,730 with an increase of just 275 cases — unlike what trends had suggested.

“It is true that labs have started working at a lower capacity that is leading to the number of cases going unreported as of yet,” a provincial health official told The Current on the condition of anonymity. They refused to comment on the government’s decision of allowing Eid holidays to lab personnel, but said it was a much-needed relief.

“Things will get back to normal and the testing capacity will be restored after… or maybe even during Eid,” the official added.

By the time this report was filed, the total number of coronavirus infections in Pakistan stood at 52,437 with 1,101 deaths. Sindh topped the chart with 20,883 cases, followed by Punjab with 18,730 infections, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) with 7,391 and Balochistan with 3,198. Islamabad had reported 1,457 cases while Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) and Azad Kashmir had 607 and 171 infections, respectively.

  • Fawad Ch seeks abolition of Ruete Hilal Committee, again

Fawad Ch seeks abolition of Ruete Hilal Committee, again

Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry has once again demanded the abolition of the Central Ruete Hilal [moon-sighting] Committee.

Fawad, while criticising the committee, argued that there was no need for such a committee in the modern era.

He also claimed that the committee, which is headed by Mufti Muneebur Rehman, wants Eid to fall on Monday, May 25 instead of Sunday, announcing to reveal motives of the committee behind such a move during a press conference.

Last year, the minister had proposed that a scientific committee should replace the Central Ruete Hilal Committee for the sighting of the moon, which had led to the committee taking strong exception.

Chairman Mufti Muneebur Rehman had asked Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan to “rein in” his ministers after Fawad had accused clerics of making lunar sighting for Islamic months a controversial affair every year as well as opposing the creation of Pakistan.

“Fawad Chaudhry’s statement against the opposition is his personal matter, but he should exercise restraint while commenting on religious scholars and not misquote history,” he said. “Who knows… one of them might also have a role in your [Fawad] appointment.”

He had urged the premier to “control his passionate ministers”, who “lack knowledge about the system”.

  • NAB to host hi-tea for all its prisoners on Eid

NAB to host hi-tea for all its prisoners on Eid

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) will give “relief” to its prisoners by offering hi-tea on Eid day, a statement issued by the anti-graft watchdog has revealed.

“Keeping its past tradition alive, the bureau has arranged hi-tea for all detained suspects and they will also be presented bouquets on Eid day,” a NAB spokesperson said Wednesday.

The bureau said it had decided to present bouquets to all its suspects detained at Kot Lakhpat and Camp jails on judicial remand. It said the bureau was doing so out of a goodwill gesture.

Opposition leader in Punjab Assembly Hamza Shahbaz, Jang/Geo Media Group editor-in-chief Mir Shakilur Rehman and Lahore Development Authority (LDA) former director general Ahad Cheema are among the prominent NAB suspects on judicial remand.

Meanwhile, a report in a local English daily has claimed that the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) suspects a serious foul play behind sudden appearance and circulation of a fake draft purported as a government bill that undermined its efforts to fix anomalies in the accountability regime.

The report quoted a member of the cabinet as saying that the issue of NAB amendments had been pushed to the back burner yet again and now the government would see after Eid what could be done. The PTI government had recently decided to consult all stakeholders, including the opposition parties, to amend NAB law either through an ordinance or if possible by convening a session of parliament to carry out the required legislation.

  • Tips to stay healthy this Eid

Tips to stay healthy this Eid

Eid ul Azha is just around the corner and everyone is gearing up for the four days of meaty dawats. But there always is a risk of overeating which can cause uneasiness and nausea. Here are a few tips that can help you maintain your health and stomach this Eid.

    Avoid fried meat

Try to consume meat which has boiled or grilled and avoid taking it in fried form as this increases the calories and leaves you feeling heavy. Barbequed tikkas and kebabs are an excellent choice of food on Eid.

    Go for a light walk

Dieticians and doctors suggest eating your last meal 2 hours before sleeping. After some time, you can go for a long walk for almost 30 minutes to make sure that the food is digested. So you can go to bed feeling light and healthy.

Take green tea after your meals

Take a cup of green tea after every heavy meal. Green tea can helps to increase the metabolism rate. You can also take tea but without sugar.

    No fizzy drinks

While it may seem a great idea to have fizzy drinks with your meal for digestion, the reality is the opposite. Fizzy drinks are full of sugar and do more harm to your body than good. Rather than having a soft drink, have a glass of lassi with mint leaves in it for better digestion. Buttermilk will not only improve the digestion process but will also make you feel fuller so you eat less.

    Add veggies to your meat

Veggies are packed with vital nutrients and fiber which would make you feel full so that you can abide yourself by eating less high calorie and fats. Eat your meat with a side of vegetables or start your meal with a bowl of salad or stir fry veggies because then your belly would ask for very little malai boti or nihari.
