    Pakistan officially declares flood situation a ‘national emergency’

    The government on Thursday officially declared the ongoing flood situation in the country a “national emergency”. Minister of Information Marriyum Aurangzeb said that the time has arrived to show “national spirit” in the face of the tremendous calamities in Sindh and Balochistan.

    At least 937 people have died in floods caused by heavy rains in Sindh and Balochistan provinces. According to the data issued by the National Disaster Management Authority(NDMA), 234 people have lost their lives to rain and flood-related incidents in Balochistan and 306 people have lost their lives in Sindh.
    165 people have lost their lives in Punjab and 185 have lost their lives in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).

    Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Reforms Ahsan Iqbal said that 55 lakh households were affected, while more than three crore people became homeless due to the devastating floods and rains across Pakistan. He was speaking on the Dawn News programme, ‘Live with Adil Shahzeb’.

    IN PICTURES: Earthquake kills 950 people in Afghanistan

    At least 950 people have died in Afghanistan as a result of an earthquake. The earthquake was magnitude 6.1 at a depth of 51 km while the epicentre was about 44 km from Khost city in Afghanistan, said the US Geological Survey (USGS). 

    Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expressed his grief over the loss of innocent lives in the earthquake. “Deeply grieved to learn about the earthquake in Afghanistan, resulting in loss of innocent lives. People in Pakistan share the grief & sorrow of their Afghan brethren. Relevant authorities working to support Afghanistan in this time of need.”

    Disturbing images of the Paktika province near the Pakistani border are being widely shared on social media, including wrecked stone dwellings, people being carried on stretchers, rubble and ruined homes.

    Helicopters are being used by the Afghan authorities in a rescue effort to transport food and medical supplies to the injured.

  • Punjab Govt imposes emergency in Murree, issues order to open govt offices and rest houses

    The Government of Punjab has imposed emergency in Murree after at least 16 people died of the extreme cold, while in their cars, during the snowstorm.

    However, as per some reports most people did not die of cold, but because of the fumes from their car heater.

    Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar has directed officials to open the government’s offices and rest houses for the stranded tourists amid chaos and an emergency situation in Murree.

    Army and Rangers have also been called in Murree for rescue operations.

    Moreover, the government has appealed to people to postpone their plan to visit Murree.

    Rawalpindi Police have also issued a travel route for all tourists visiting Murree.
