    Faisalabad man refuses to marry daughter into family that praised PM Imran

    A man in Faisalabad rejected a marriage proposal for his daughter after the other side praised Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan, an undated Urdu newspaper clipping claimed.

    According to the report, the man, namely Hameed of Mamu Kanjan town in Tandlianwala, lost his temper when his potential son-in-law’s family praised the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and PM Imran.

    Done of inflation, Hameed lost his cool when Kamalia’s Ramzan and his wife praised the Imran-led PTI as the two families met to discuss the kids’ engagement, the report said.

    “He [Hameed] kicked the guests out of his house and refused to forge relations with them,” read the clipping.

    A massive loyalty shift has been reported among the supporters of the now ruling PTI as the opposition continues to support people against the government’s economic policies.

    Pakistan’s inflation rate, which was until recently at a record high, was 10.58% for 2019, a 5.5% increase from 2018.

    The premier claimed on Sunday that inflation had currently declined from the level of 2018 when the PTI came to power.

    “The government’s efforts are coming to fruition as both the consumer price index and core inflation had touched lower than the time of government’s formation,” he tweeted.

    “More good news on the economic front. Consumer price index and core inflation are both now lower than when our government was formed,” he said.

    Planning Minister Asad Umar also said on Twitter that inflation during January was down to 5.7% while core inflation was at 5.4%.

    “In July 2018, prior to the PTI government’s formation, CPI [consumer price index] was 5.8% and core inflation was 7.6%,” the minister said in his tweet.

    However, the Economic Survey 2019-20 released by the government as part of the current fiscal year’s budget documents and the current official data of the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) depict a contrary picture about food inflation as the prices of essential items have gone up to between 50% and over 80% in the retail market as compared to prices in 2017-18.

    Faisalabad man gunned down by police for not stopping at checkpoint

    At least four policemen have been arrested in Faisalabad for killing a man and injuring three others after they fired at a vehicle that failed to stop at a checkpoint in Dijkot area of the city.

    The family of the deceased says that Waqas Ahmed was on his way back from a wedding on Wednesday when the police team on a patrolling duty stopped their car.

    There are conflicting reports about what transpired at the checkpoint. Waqas’s cousin says that the deceased had stopped at the checkpoint and answered police’s questions, but policemen still chased him and gunned him down.

    However, a police report claims that Waqas “mistakenly” ran over Sub-Inspector Shahid Rasool’s foot and sped away from the check-post in panic. The police officers chased the vehicle and intercepted them in no time. They then pulled out Waqas from the vehicle and shot him multiple times. They even slapped Ahmed after he had passed away as well, his cousin told a media outlet.

    The three men accompanying Waqas were taken to an unknown location, but they were released after the Faisalabad police chief intervened. Police claim Waqas was killed in an exchange of fire following his failure to stop on the checkpoint.

    Meanwhile, the relatives of Waqas organised a protest on Samundri Road and set tyres on fire. Following this, the Faisalabad CCPO took notice of the incident and launched an inquiry. Ahmed’s body has been sent for a post-mortem examination while the three other men have been sent back home.

    Last month, five officials of Islamabad Police were arrested for killing 21-year-old youth, Usama Satti, in cold blood near Srinagar Highway, G-10 sector in the federal capital. According to reports, shots were fired from the front and hit Satti mostly on the face and upper body.

    The policemen were subsequently dismissed from the service after a probe.

    Boy reportedly dies after losing a PUBG game

    A young man from Faisalabad reportedly lost his life on Monday after he “failed to win” a game of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) online.

    According to reports, the man was taken to the hospital yesterday while he was unconscious.

    The family said that the boy had been playing the online game for the last six months. He lost the last stage of the game last night that had a deep effect on his mind. The exact cause of death has not yet been ascertained.

    PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds popularly known as PUBG was temporarily banned in Pakistan after reports appeared that it had negative effects on the minds of the youth.

    PM says Manchester will envy Faisalabad’s progress one day

    As he announced a programme to facilitate industrialisation in Faisalabad, Prime Minister Imran Khan said he hoped one day Manchester would say that Faisalabad has overtaken it in terms of industrial progress.

    Addressing a ceremony attended by the businessmen on Wednesday, the PM said: “If Faisalabad, once known as Pakistan’s Manchester, had kept up its current pace of industrial development, it would have left even Manchester behind.”

    According to the prime minister, it said it was the government’s job to facilitate industrialisation and the business community.

    “We are now working on how we can aid the business community and investors so that jobs are created. So this cycle can only continue when we [remove] hurdles for the industrial class,” he added.

    The PM said in the ’60s Pakistan was used as an example for the developing world, adding that several countries, such as Malaysia and South Korea, borrowed its first five-year programme. “People now go to Dubai for their vacations but the sheikhs used to come here.”

    The PM also commented on the local government system, saying successful cities around the world function “like countries”. He said that the modern cities were self-sufficient, unlike Faisalabad that depended on the provincial government for funds to fix roads, build hospitals.

    Unexploded 750-pound bomb ‘from Indo-Pak war’ found in Faisalabad

    Locals in Faisalabad have found a bomb weighing 750 pounds from fields which, according to District Civil Defence, may have been dropped during the 1965 or 1971 Indo-Pak wars, but did not explode. 

    The unexploded ordnance (UXO) was unearthed when locals were digging in agricultural fields near Faisalabad airport.

    The bomb — in rusty and dilapidated condition — was handed over to Civil Defence officials shortly after it was discovered.

    District Civil Defence officer Rana Abbas was quoted as saying that the bomb will be handed over to Pakistan Air Force (PAF).

    UXO:

    UXO of war is an explosive that did not explode when it was employed and still pose a risk of detonation, sometimes many decades after it was used or discarded.

    It does not always originate from wars; areas such as military training grounds can also hold significant numbers, even after the area has been abandoned.

    UXO from World War I continue to be a hazard, with poisonous gas filled munitions still a problem. When unwanted munitions are found, they are sometimes destroyed in controlled explosions, but accidental detonation of even very old explosives also occurs, sometimes with fatal results.

    Around 80 countries are contaminated by land mines, which kill or maim 15,000–20,000 people every year. Approximately 80% of casualties are civilians, with children the most affected age group. An estimated average of 50% of deaths occurs within hours of the blast.

    In recent years, mines have been used increasingly as weapons of terror against local civilian populations specifically.

    In addition to the obvious danger of explosion, buried UXO can also cause environmental contamination. In some heavily used military training areas, munitions-related chemicals can enter soil and groundwater.

    Unidentified men reportedly open fire outside theatre during Meera’s performance

    Two unidentified men reportedly opened fire outside a theatre in Faisalabad during Meera’s stage performance Friday evening. No casualty has been reported.

    According to a report in Samaa News, the incident took place outside Sabina Theatre near Chenab Chowk in Faisalabad. CCTV footage of the incident shows two men entering the theatre’s gate and firing aerial shots. They even grabbed the security guard’s weapon.

    Meera, while speaking to the media outlet, expressed her shock over the incident and said that she is “deeply saddened to know that bullets are being fired so openly in this country.”

    The police have said that there are investigating the case but an FIR has not been filed as yet.

    Earlier this week, it was reported that Meera is returning to stage shows after she was denied financial assistance by the Punjab Government. According to details, Meera’s show titled Selfie Queen was scheduled to begin from September 11. Other cast members include Azeem Vicky, Aslam Chatta, Shahid Hashmi, Gamma BA, Anisha Khan, Sheila Chaudhry and Manahil Noor among others.

    Meera was last seen on the big screen in Saqib Malik’s Baaji, in which she played the role of a fading actress.

    15kg wheat stolen from differently-abled man in Faisalabad

    Two persons beat up a differently-abled person and robbed a 15kg bag of wheat from him on Wednesday in Faisalabad.

    Imran Haider filed a complaint at the Ghulam Muhammad Abad Police Station asserting that he was on his way home to the University of Agriculture Faisalabad road when two men on a motorcycle stopped him.

    “They [robbers] were riding a motorcycle. I was also on a motorcycle. They robbed me of a bag of wheat. I tried to stop them but I am disabled and they were two so they were able to get away,” he said.

    The incident took place when wheat prices have increased across the country. In Karachi, a sack of flour was being sold for Rs500 a couple of days ago. The Flour Mill Association Punjab increased the price of flour by Rs6 per kg in Lahore after which flour was being sold at Rs70 per kg across the city.

    Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan and Federal Minister for Planning and Special Initiatives Asad Umar have found the aloo gosht [potato-meat curry] served to them at Faisalabad Panahgah [shelter home] “even better than the one at PM House in Islamabad”.

    This was revealed by Umar, who on Friday tweeted:

    “Got a chance to dine at the shelter home in Faisalabad during our visit. Both I and the prime minister really liked aloo gosht. The premier said it was [even] better than the one he gets to have at PM House,” he wrote.

    The tweet came hours after PM Imran and a few members of his team reached Faisalabad to inaugurate the first shelter home in the city, which has been constructed over a four kanal area as part of the government’s flagship Panahgah initiative.

    Accompanied by Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Usman Buzdar, the premier toured the shelter home to review the facilities being provided by the provincial government to homeless people, and received a briefing by the administration.

    Last week, he had directed the chief ministers of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) to take steps to provide temporary shelters and food to every person in their respective province in the wake of harsh cold weather.

    “Given the extremely cold weather conditions, I have asked CMs of Punjab and KP to ensure that no person is left out without a shelter; and their administrations must take immediate action to provide temporary shelters plus food for those who cannot be accommodated in existing Panah­gahs (shelter homes),” the PM had tweeted.

    Earlier on Friday, the premier also broke ground on the state-of-the-art Allama Iqbal Industrial City that has been planned over an area of 4,000 acres.

    The industrial city is a mega project of the Special Economic Zone of Faisalabad Industrial Estate Development and Management Company (FIEDMC) under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

    Indian woman tried to escape Kartarpur with Pakistani boyfriend

    Pakistani authorities last month thwarted an attempt by a Sikh girl to enter the country illegally.  

    According to reports, the girl came to Darbar Sahib Gurdwara in Kartarpur and entered Pakistan as a Sikh pilgrim in order to meet her Pakistani boyfriend at the Darbar Sahib.

    The girl, identified as Manjeet Kaur, met her boyfriend who was from
    Faisalabad. The guy had come along with a couple of friends including a woman.

    Kaur decided to stay in Pakistan and the woman who had accompanied the Faisalabad man gave the girl her visitor card. Kaur then discarded her pilgrim card in a dustbin in order to avoid being caught.

    However, Pakistani authorities hindered the plan and confronted the couple before the girl could escape into the country.  

    Following the incident, security around the Sikh holy site was tightened and visitors will now have to provide biometric verification when exiting the holy place as well.
