  • Hasnain Lehri denies claims of physically assaulting Nimra Jacob

After a video showing an alleged altercation between models Hasnain Lehri and Nirma Jacob at the Texpo Fashion Week went viral on Saturday, Lehri has come up with a response.

In the video, the female super model can be seen distraught after Lehri allegedly physically and verbally assaulted her, demanding that event organisers take her safety seriously.

Several models and influential designers like Kamiar Rokni, Eman Suleman and Zara Peerzada have taken to social media to condemn the incident, and demanded that the abuser be held accountable for his actions.

Now in a statement to Express Tribune, Lehri has denied that he physically assaulted Jacob:

“I categorically deny all accusations of physical altercation and abuse. I come from a very respectful family, we aren’t the kind of people who would get into an issue as petty as this.”

He went on to explain how the events had unfolded, which began when Jacob bumped in to him during the ramp walk:

“During the crossing at the ramp, Jacob hit my shoulder. We went backstage and she walked towards me, asking me to learn how to walk on the ramp. This resulted in an argument and she brought my deceased father into the conversation.”

He added that there were witnesses like organisers Tehmina Khaled, Tehmim and choreographer Nubain Ali, to whom Lehri had gone to raising concern, and they had told Lehri that Jacob was known for her unprofessional behavior with other models.

Lehri revealed how the fight had started `”When the show was done, I packed my bag, readying to leave; Nubain approached me and asked me what the issue was. As Nubain and I were discussing, this is when [Jacob] returned and started the argument again,” Lehri went on. “She then told me to f–k off, and I said it back. That’s when she took out her phone and started recording me.”

Lehri went on to reveal that he asked Jacob four times not to record her, after which he had snatched the phone from her hands:

“This isn’t acceptable and I took her phone. That is all I did. I took the phone from her hand and kept it with me because she was recording me without my consent. She just wanted to show her side of the story. I wish I had taken out my phone and started recording how [Jacob] was misbehaving as well.”

Lehri denied that he had raised his hand on Jacob, and said Jacob and her friends were trying to intimidate him:

“With God as my witness, I can swear on the Holy Book that all I did was take her phone. I didn’t assault anyone, I didn’t physically abuse her. [Jacob’s] three friends teamed up against me. They will support her.”

Addressing the fact that he refused to give back Jacob’s phone, and the arrival of the police, Lehri revealed that the police could see that he didn’t assault the female model, which is why they had let him go:

“If I was in the wrong and the alleged physical assault did happen, why would the police let me leave? I was free to go. I respect my fraternity but [Jacob] is grossly manipulating the whole situation.”

  • H&M collaborates with Indian designer Sabyasachi

H&M has launched its collection in collaboration with Kolkata-based Indian designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee on Thursday.

Talking to Vouge about his collaboration with H&M, designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee said that there is a wonderful quote by Rumi that sums it up: “What you seek is seeking you.” He received an email from H&M saying they were interested in partnering. “I thought it was too good to be true, and probably spam, but it wasn’t. H&M’s designer tie-ups are what legends are made of.”

He continued: “This is part of the big fashion dream because it is a validation of your work—it means they believe that my product is desirable enough to translate itself to the mass market. We have created hysteria in Indian couture (we’re the most copied brand here) but that makes us inaccessible, and yes, I do get a lot of requests to do something more affordable. This was the perfect opportunity to do that. Plus, I got to work with denim for the first time, which was exciting.”

Sabyasachi further said that it took him six months to create the artwork for this collection.

This is H&M’s first global Indian designer collaboration. The collection will be available in stores in 18 countries, including India, the US and Britain.

Mohsin Naveed Ranjha offers to help struggling designers

Mohsin Naveed Ranjha has opened up on the ‘heavy discrimination’ in the fashion industry and has announced that he is opening his doors for young designers struggling to establish themselves in the fashion business.

In a detailed note posted to social media, the internationally acclaimed designer said: “The fashion fraternity in Pakistan and internationally at large faces heavy discrimination.”

“Having gone through a time where I have struggled to make a name and a repute for myself, the hardships that paved the way and the challenges that brought me to the point I am in today made me promise myself in the past that if I ever get to make a name, I’d help and promote local art and partisanship.”

Expressing his disappointment over the lack of support for debut designers, Ranjha said: “Seeing the sheer mockery and fun that was made of debut designers in the past bridal week has left me shattered and utterly disappointed.”

“Liking or disliking someone’s work is totally subjective but putting someone down like that and disrespecting them is something that has made me want to address this,” he added.

The designer continued: “Leaving the good and bad to the critiques, let’s talk about how much hard work, dedication and labour each bridal wear takes to make. Each artisan spending hours and hours of their life trying to fulfil and perfect the look. How everyone associated with each stitch of the garment is being disrespected.”

Announcing his decision to support budding artists, Ranjha said: “We would feel happy to help a fellow member of the fraternity, regardless of scale and experience, and inculcate a culture of love, friendship, and togetherness.”

“We’ve had enough of bullying and disrespect in the name of criticism and this by no means equates to me to encouraging and supporting copy cats, it’s just realising that maybe with some support and love to these in need,” he concluded.
