At Cannes, Palestinian films ‘more important than ever’

Veteran Palestinian film director Rashid Masharawi was abroad when the Gaza war broke out last year, so he decided to hand over the camera to other filmmakers still inside the besieged territory.

“They are the story” of Masharawi’s project, which he presented at the Cannes Film Festival in France, more than seven months after the conflict erupted.

“They were fighting to protect their lives, their families, to search for food, for wood to make a fire,” said Masharawi. The result is a collection of short films called Ground Zero recounting the Israeli bombardment of Gaza and ensuing humanitarian disaster from the perspective of civilians on the ground.

In one, a mother displaced by the conflict plops her daughter in a large white bucket and, with a clean Turkish coffee pot, gently pours water over her to bathe her. In another, a man recounts his 24-hour ordeal under rubble after the building he was in collapsed.

Masharawi directed the 20 teams in Gaza from abroad – a process he described as “very, very, very difficult”. “Sometimes we needed to wait one week to 10 days just to be in contact with somebody, or just to have internet to upload material,” said Masharawi, who was born in Gaza.

At other times, teams were busy searching for a tent, finding insulin for a director’s mother, or “an ambulance to go and save some kids”. The films are part of several Palestinian tales screening at the festival, including Mehdi Fleifel’s Athens-set refugee drama To A Land Unknown.

Israel’s military offensive has killed more than 35,000 people in Gaza, mostly women and children, according to health ministry figures in the region. Thousands of miles away from the conflict, Israel’s pavilion in Cannes is promoting its filmmaking.

Palestinian cinema does not have its own tent at the event, but Algeria has made space for its filmmakers at the other end of the international market in Cannes.

“Our narrative and storytelling is more important than ever,” Norway-based Palestinian director Mohamed Jabaly said.He finished filming his latest project, Life is Beautiful, just before the war started. A close friend who shot the last scene of the film has not survived the war. “He was killed while waiting for food aid,” said Jabaly.

Munir Atallah, of US-based Watermelon Pictures, is hoping to bring the quirky family portrait to North American audiences, saying Palestinians have “for too long been shut out by the gatekeepers of the industry”.

One Palestinian who has already found viewers in the United States is Cherien Dabis, who made 2009 film Amreeka and co-directed hit Hulu series Ramy. But the shooting of her latest film – a historic epic – was disrupted by the Gaza war.

One of the crew on the ground in the occupied West Bank town of Ramallah, Ala Abu Ghoush, has responded by making a documentary about the stalled project, which they are calling Unmaking Of. “The film is really asking the question: What is the importance of doing films and art in this kind of situation, in this war?” said Abu Ghoush.

‘I refused anti-state roles’; Sajid Hasan on Bollywood offers

Veteran actor Sajid Hasan was invited as a guest on Ahmed Ali Butt’s podcast ‘Excuse Me’.

During the recording, Sajid discussed his relationship with Sahira and Rahat Kazmi on the ground-breaking series ‘Dhoop Kinare’, which was a major turning point in his career.

He also discussed declining parts that would have encouraged an anti-Indian attitude.
Speaking about the reasons behind his dislike of actors portraying anti-state roles, he said, “I’m disappointed with Tiger 3, which I’m currently watching, as it contains harmful stereotypes and biased content against Pakistan. I strongly dislike this approach and believe it’s unfair to actors. Even when I was new to the industry and faced pressure to play such roles, I’ve always rejected them. I believe our relationships with people from other countries should be respectful and positive, even if we disagree with their views. Moreover, I urge Pakistanis to appreciate the freedom we have, which was fought for by Quaid E Azam, and recognize the value of living without oppression, as I personally experienced suffocation during my time in India.”

  • Sridevi’s husband blames a habit for her untimely death

Sridevi’s husband blames a habit for her untimely death

The late celebrated icon Sri Devi left a hole in the Bollywood industry when she passed away in 2018, leaving behind an impressive film legacy. On the announcement of her death, many Bollywood actors, including Pakistani celebrities like Sajal Aly, mourned the loss of a giant. Five years later, her husband, producer Boney Kapoor, has opened up about her sudden death in an interview with ‘The New Indian’.

The producer said it was Sri Devi’s constant habit of crash diets had caused her health problems to prolong, saying that the family physician had often scolded the late actress. “She often used to starve; she wanted to look good,” Kapoor stated.

“She wanted to look good because when you are on screen, you look much broader and she wanted to make sure that she is chiselled and in good shape to maintain good looks on screen. It was not just for the film that she was doing then. She had come down to 46-47 kgs. You will notice it in the film ‘English Vinglish’.”

Boney further elaborated that doctors consistently scolded the late actress after she had a number of blackouts because of her refusal to add salt to her diet.

Salt can retain water and cutting it out from diet can make people look thinner.

The producer said he urged his late wife to not follow a harsh diet because of her low BP.

“Most women believe salt increases water retention, that’s why you feel puffy. That was one reason. I would also tell her not to completely avoid salt. I would also ask her to include a pinch of salt when having salad.”

Boney recalled that South Indian star Nagarjuna came to visit him to offer condolences for Sri Devi’s demise, and revealed the actress’s crash diet took her to a point that she “fell in the bathroom and broke her teeth, and had those artificial caps.”

Boney said he urged the actress to stop following such a strict diet plan, however, “unfortunately, she didn’t take this seriously and we also thought it can’t be this serious till the incident happened.”

Sri Devi passed away in Dubai while she was getting ready to go on a dinner date with her husband. She suffered a cardiac arrest while in the bath tub and could not be revived. According to a news source, Boney had found her motionless in the hotel bathroom, in a bathtub full of water. When she didn’t wake up, he called the police at 9 pm.

Speaking on the brutal interogation by the Dubai police, Boney Kapoor opened up about the disturbing allegations claiming he had killed her, and why he chose not to speak about the factors behind her death.

“First of all, it was not a natural death, it was an accidental death. I decided not to speak about it because I had already spoken about it for over 24 to 48 hours when I was being interrogated and investigated. Dubai Police told me that we had to be through because there was pressure from Indian media. I said, well, I have nothing more to say than what I already have been saying.

They also discovered that there was no foul play and I went through all the intense interrogation there where they put me through a lie detector and all those things. The post-mortem report said that it was an accidental death by drowning.”
