Karachi Kings finally break their losing streak by beating Lahore

On Friday, Karachi Kings finally broke their losing streak, beating Lahore Qalandars by 22 runs at the Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore.

After winning the toss, Karachi posted a total of 149 runs in 19.5 overs. Kings’ bowler Mir Hamza was the star of the day, as he took four key wickets of Lahore Qalandars to ensure points for his team.

Karachi, which is already out of the tournament, had a face-saving with their win over Qalandars, who had 10 points in seven games and were looking for a place in the playoffs but now they have to win all its coming games.

Defending champions Multan Sultans qualified for the February 23 Qualifier after they snatched 117 runs victory over Quetta Gladiators earlier in the day. Lahore Qalandars will now face Islamabad United in the 27th match of the league on Saturday.

Harry Brook and David Wiese with some gutsy batting kept Lahore Qalandars’ hopes intact till the 18th over. But Mir Hamza, who first broke the partnership taking the wicket of Brook and then, despite review from Wiese, trapped him leg before wicket. They provided some acceleration to Lahore’s score from 63 for five to 119 for six. Brook made 28 while Wiese piled up 31 in 23 balls. With that Qalandars now look to regroup in their next match to stay alive in the tournament.

On Lahore’s side, Afghan bowler Rashid Khan and emerging pacer Zaman Khan took four wickets each, conceding 17 and 16 runs respectively.

Hamza bagged Player of the Match award for an outstanding spell against the Qalandars.

Seventh consecutive loss: New record for Karachi Kings

Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise Karachi Kings has set a new record of losing in the history of PSL. This year, the Babar Azam-led Kings lost their seventh consecutive match against Islamabad United at the Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore on Monday.

Chasing 192, Kings were given a boost when two key Islamabad United bowlers, Shadab Khan and Zeeshan Zameer, were forced off the field with injuries, leading to Asif Ali needing to bowl three overs, and taking two wickets in his first over.

It was some generous fielding from United at the death and a spirited stand between Imad Wasim and Qasim Akram that even made this game a contest.

It came down to a nail-biting final over from Waqas Maqsood, in which Kings needed eight. A boundary off the second ball brought it down to a run-a-ball, but two wickets took the game right down to the final delivery, off which the Kings needed two. Chris Jordan spooned it back to Waqas, who somehow dropped it, but managed to gather and effect a direct hit at the non-striker’s end.

Jordan was inches short of the crease that would have guaranteed the Kings a Super Over, and United had just about a hold on to victory in a game they should have sealed long ago.

Karachi remains without points after seven matches in the ongoing tournament. Before this, the unwanted record of most consecutive defeats in a single edition of PSL was with Lahore Qalandars. Qalandars were beaten in six consecutive games in the 2018 season of PSL.

A 52-run victory for Shaheen Shah Afridi’s men, playing their first game in front of their home crowd, not only underlined the Qalandars’ Pakistan Super League (PSL) title credentials but also showed why they have the most dangerous bowling attack as they defended 182.

Sultans’ big-hitters Tim David and Rilee Rossouw were unable to perform. Captain Mohammad Rizwan couldn’t find his strokes. Shan Masood never got going. In fact, no one got going for the Sultans as they were bundled out for 130.

Qalandars’ Fakhar Zaman had set the platform for a big total and Qalandars reached it thanks to a 60-run partnership between Hafeez (43) and Phil Salt (26 not out) in the last five overs.

Zaman bagged Player of the match for his blistering 37-ball 60 runs.

Fakhar Zaman is also the highest scorer of the PSL’s seventh edition. He is standing on top with 416 runs while Multan’s Shan Masood and captain Rizwan are following him with 351 and 269 runs, respectively.

Talking in the post-match presentation ceremony, Fakhar said: “I am trying to bat ball to ball and play a long innings. If I get through the initial phase, I aim to bat for at least 10 overs and build from there.”

Talking about the difference in the pitch, he added: “The pitches in Karachi were more conducive for batting, here in Lahore one needs to spend more time and adapt to the conditions. This is a huge win for us as we strongly felt we could beat Multan, it was an incredible atmosphere and we always enjoy playing in front of the Lahore crowd. I am sure once we have 100 % crowds, the atmosphere would be even better.”

Meanwhile, despite the loss, Sultans retains the top position on the points table with 12 points from seven games, Qalandars have now surged to the second spot with eight points (four wins) in six games.

‘SBP, PCB agree to build five-star hotel near Gaddafi Stadium’

The Sports Board of Punjab (SBP) and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) have reportedly agreed to build a five-star hotel at Nishtar Park Sports Complex, near Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. The decision was reportedly taken in a meeting presided by Director General Adnan Arshad Aulakh at the National Hockey Stadium on Thursday.

According to details, PCB’s Senior General Manager Admin Col (retd) Ashfaq Ahmed, Consultant Abdul Ghafoor Bhatti, Director Admin Javed Chohan and other officials were also part of the meeting, which discussed the construction of a hotel, a High-Performance Centre and other issues related to the Lahore Regional Cricket Association (LRCA) ground.

Addressing the meeting, Aulakh said: “Several world-class sports facilities have been provided in Nishtar Park Sports Complex and many international sports players used to visit here for sports events quite frequently.”

“In such a situation, a five-star hotel is badly needed here. The security issue of international teams will also be resolved after the construction of a world-class hotel which will also provide a complete residence facility to world sports stars.”

“In this way, the authorities won’t need to block the traffic and other roads for the security of foreign sports teams,” he added.

It is pertinent to mention here that sporting events in the city often block all major traffic routes after authorities cordon off roads for security purposes. The construction of a hotel near the stadium will help solve traffic problems in the city.
