    ‘Til trash do us part: Taiwan couple embraces garbage wedding shoot

    A Taiwanese couple decked out in a tux and gown embrace in front of a mountain of trash in an unorthodox wedding photo – one the environment-conscious bride hopes will discourage her guests from generating unnecessary garbage.

    Greenpeace campaigner Iris Hsueh and her fiance are having their “environmentally friendly wedding” in January, and have asked guests to bring their own containers for taking home leftovers.

    Deciding that showing – not telling – was a more effective communication method, the Taipei-based couple travelled three hours south for a photo shoot in Nantou county’s Puli township, where the amount of trash brought to a local dump has steadily risen over the years.

    “If any guests are not willing to bring along a container, I would show them the photograph and say, ‘would you reconsider?’” the 33-year-old told AFP, adding that the photos ended up drawing local media attention.

    “I didn’t think it would create such a big sensation.”

    Self-ruled Taiwan, an island of 23 million people, has had a recycling programme since 1987, with over 50 per cent of household trash processed through the system – among the highest rates in the world.

    But Puli township’s sanitation crew chief Chen Chun-hung said the amount of garbage there has mushroomed – back in the 1980s, it was about 20 tonnes a day; now, its about 50.

    Aamir replied that the answer will soon come from the skies. He also took a jibe at PTI by saying that there is justice on the skies and not Tehreek-e-Insaaf.

    The veteran host stated recently stated that sources from FIA have informed him that PTI’s social media team is behind his character assassination on social media to make Imran Khan happy as he was upset with Liaquat for ditching PTI at a crucial stage.

    Aamir also dragged Fawad Chaudhry’s name in the matter and stated that he overlooks the social media department.

    The Current reached out to Former focal person on digital media to former PM Khan, Dr Arsalan Khalid who dismissed these claims and exclusively said, “Aamir is so irrelevant that we don’t even think about him.”

    Prior to his seperation with Dania Shah, he published a video message against Khan.

    Aamir claimed that ever since Imran has met Russian President Vladimir Putin, he has become like him, adding adjectives like “stubborn, ill-mannered and rebellious.

    Last month the Aalim Online star posted a series of video in which he expressed his anger on PTI Chairman Imran Khan’s statement in which he called out politicians who left his political party.

    Aamir said that he is not a traitor, instead former PM Imran Khan is the traitor according to him. The veteran host also slammed PM Khan for dissolving the assembly.

    He posted another video with some aggressive remarks against his opponents.

    Man accidentally throws Rs3,139,500 in trash bin

    A businessman in  Greece accidentally threw a bag containing 19,000 Euros (RsRs 3,139,500) in a dustbin after mistaking it for garbage.

    As per reports, a businessman from the Greek Island of Limos was carrying cash in a bag and a garbage bag on Monday. On his way to his office, the man dumped both the bags into the dustbin. After reaching his shop, he realised that he had mistakenly dumped the bag with the cash as well.

    The businessman told the local media that after realising his mistake, he ran to the area where he had dumped the bags but the garbage bags were missing.

    “I panicked and stopped the cops and told the officers about the money and how I threw it accidentally into a dustbin,” said the businessman.

    The police officers along with him located the garbage truck and caught up with the vehicle at the island harbour before it could dump the contents for burning.

    The businessman told the local media that he, along with three officers, reached the rake and started searching through all the trash. After a few minutes of searching, they found the first garbage bag but the bag filled with money was still missing.

    According to reports, the man and the police officers on finding the first bag were hopeful that they would locate the one with money too. The businessman and the cops searched each garbage bag in the dump and finally found the bag with the euros after searching for almost an hour.

    Wasim Akram has expressed his embarrassment and disgust after the British High Commissioner Dr Christian Turner shared pictures of himself picking trash in Islamabad.

    “Now this is really embarrassing. Where are we heading?,” questioned Akram, who has been actively cleaning the beach in Karachi over the past couple of years.

    The former captain of the Pakistan Cricket Team also thanked Dr Turner “for doing this almost every week.”

    “Safai Nisf Imaan [Hai],” asserted Wasim.

    Earlier on Friday, Dr Turner shared a picture of himself holding two bags of trash he collected after his morning walk on the Margalla Hills in Islamabad.

    “Another Friday morning walk, another two bags of litter,” said Turner. “Safaai nisf imaan hai (cleanliness is half of faith).”

    Dr Turner also tagged the Deputy Commissioner of Islamabad Hamza Shafqaat, who praised him, saying “Great”.

    However, the DC’s comments did not sit well with netizens who called him out for being negligent towards his work.

    Shafqaat later clarified his comment, saying that his intention was misunderstood.

    “This comment is grossly misunderstood. I was just appreciating the efforts of Dr Christian to keep Islamabad clean,” said Hamza, adding: “I would request everyone to not litter in forests. It is everyone’s responsiblity to keep their surroundings clean.”

    He later also said that sanitation teams picked up 1600 tonnes of waste today (Friday).

    “Everyone please remember that cleanliness is a two-way street and everyone of us is responsible for it and not just the British High Commissioner,” urged Shafqaat.

    Meanwhile, last week, Dr Turner had urged the residents of the federal capital to keep Islamabad clean by avoiding littering at open and green places.

    “Meals are for sharing not littering,” Dr Turner had said, sharing a picture of two plastic bags stuffed with empty water bottles, tin cans and other waste material.

    “Please help keep beautiful Islamabad clean,” he had said.

    Trash collected from Mount Everest is set to be transformed into art and displayed in a nearby gallery, to highlight the need to save the world’s tallest mountain from turning into a dumping site.

    Used oxygen bottles, torn tents, ropes, broken ladders, cans, and plastic wrappers discarded by climbers and trekkers litter the 8,848.86 metre (29,032 feet) tall peak and the surrounding areas.

    Tommy Gustafsson, project director and a co-founder of the Sagarmatha Next Centre – a visitors’ information centre and waste up-cycling facility – said foreign and local artists will be engaged in creating artwork from waste materials and train locals to turn trash into treasures.

    “We want to showcase how you can transform solid waste to precious pieces of art … and generate employment and income,” Gustafsson told Reuters. “We hope to change the people’s perceptions about the garbage and manage it.”

    The Centre is located at an altitude of 3,780 metres at Syangboche on the main trail to Everest base camp, two days’ walk from Lukla, the gateway to the mountain.

    It is due for “soft opening” to locals in the spring as the number of visitors could be limited this year due to coronavirus pandemic restrictions, Gustafsson said.

    Products and artwork will be displayed to raise environmental awareness, or sold as souvenirs with the proceeds going to conservation of the region, he said.

    Trash brought down from the mountain or collected from households and tea houses along the trail is handled and segregated by a local environmental group, the Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee, but the task in a remote region that has no roads is a huge challenge.

    Garbage is dumped or burned in open pits, causing air and water pollution as well as contamination of soil.

    Phinjo Sherpa, of the Eco Himal group involved in the scheme, said under a “carry me back” initiative, each returning tourist and guide will be requested to take a bag containing one kilogram (2.2 pounds) of garbage back to Lukla airport, from where the trash will be airlifted to Kathmandu.

    World Bank to give $10 million to help solve Karachi’s waste problem

    The World Bank (WB), on the recommendation of Sindh Chief Minister (CM) Murad Ali Shah, has allocated $10 million to help solve Karachi’s garbage problem through the Sindh Solid Waste Management Authority (SSWMA), Profit reported.

    According to the details, the allocated amount will be used for capacity building, technical expertise and construction of a new landfill site for the SSWMA.

    CM Murad held a meeting with an eight-member WB delegation on Wednesday, where he said, “It is a new organisation and would definitely take time to achieve expertise, but even then there is a dire need to operate in a scientific manner and make it a leading SWM organisation in the country.”

    At this, WB Global Director Dr Dameh said that in Karachi Neighbourhood Improvement Programme (KNIP) there was a provision for solid waste management and agreed to help in solving the city’s waste problem.

    The provincial chief executive also said that he was keen to develop a most modern and environment-friendly landfill site on the outskirts of the city.

    “This landfill site must be equipped with all the necessary machinery, gadgets, equipment and technical staff and useful for power generation,” he added.

    Moreover, on the request of the CM, the World Bank agreed to construct a landfill site over an area of 500 acres in the outskirts of the city for which the government would provide land.
