  • Gautam Gambhir appointed head coach of Indian cricket team

Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir has been appointed as the head coach of the Indian team.

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Jay Shah announced the appointment, saying, “We welcome Gautam Gambhir as the head coach of the Indian cricket team. I am confident that Gautam Gambhir is an ideal person for Indian cricket. He has vast experience in cricket, and his vision for Team India is very clear.”

He said that the Indian Cricket Board will fully support Gautam Gambhir in his new journey.

Rahul Dravid’s coaching career with the Indian cricket team ended with the T20 World Cup win. He announced his resignation after the T20 World Cup.

Did Shahrukh Khan offer blank check to Gautam Gambhir for remaining in KKR?

Bollywood superstar and owner of Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Shah Rukh Khan, reportedly presented a blank check to Gautam Gambhir, ‘Daily Jagran’ has reported.

Gambhir is also interested in the job of India’s head coach, but wants a guarantee that he will apply only if he is selected for the coach, Daily Jagran claims.

According to an NDTV report, the Indian Cricket Board is interested in appointing Gambhir as the coach of the Indian cricket team.

Since many foreign coaches have refused to coach the Indian team, now the Indian board is thinking of Gautam Gambhir as the head coach after Rahul Dravid.

Gambhir, who has mentor Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2024, has been offered a ‘blank check’ by Shah Rukh Khan to join the franchise for the next 10 years.

‘I am here to play IPL not to take abuse from anyone’; Naveen opens up on verbal spat with Virat Kohli

A match between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) did not end on a happy note after Virat Kohli sledged Afghan fast bowler Naveen-ul-Haq in the 17th over.

RCB registered a superb 18-run win against LSG on Monday night. However, what became the win was overshadowed by the brawl between RCB batter Virat Kohli, Lucknow mentor Gautam Gambhir and fast bowler Naveen-ul-Haq.

It seemed like a replay of 2013 when the latter was leading Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and involved in a heated exchange with a young Virat who was just 5 years old in the cricketing circle. A decade later, a similar picture was in front of everyone.

Naveen-ul-Haq has now shared his thoughts with some of his teammates according to Indian Express. The Afghan pacer has reportedly said, “I am here to play in the IPL, not to take abuse from anyone.” The bowler said that as a player, he has dignity and nobody can abuse him like that.

Haq and Kohli both shared cryptic Instagram stories after the incident in which the latter shared quotes while the former directly pointed towards Kohli and wrote:

“You get what you deserve, that’s how it should be and that’s how it goes.”

The incident was condemned by former players while all three were also heavily penalised.

BCCI takes strict action against Kohli, Haq, Gambhir for ugly fight in IPL

A heated argument took place between Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir after Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) beat Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) by 18 runs in a low-scoring thriller at the Ekana Stadium during Indian Premier League (IPL).

Now Virat Kohli, Gautam Gambhir and Naveen-ul-Haq have been fined for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct. LSG’s Naveen-ul-Haq was also spotted arguing with Kohli and that did not go down well with the IPL management.

“Mr Gambhir admitted to the Level 2 offence under Article 2.21 of the IPL Code of Conduct and has been fined 100 per cent of his match fee. Similarly, Mr Kohli admitted to the Level 2 offence under Article 2.21 of the IPL Code of Conduct and has been fined 100 per cent of his match fee. Mr Naveen-ul-Haq, on the other hand, has been fined 50 per cent of his match fees for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during the match against Royal Challengers Bangalore,” read a statement from the IPL.

This is not the first time that Virat and Gautam have locked horns with each other. Whenever these two face each other, fans have seen aggression from both sides.

Afghan pacer Naveen-ul-Haq has crafted a bad image in the cricket world by showing abusive aggression. A gesture he made while he aggressively shook hands with Kohli left cricketing fans aghast.

Match Highlights: Royal Challengers Bangalore 126/9 in 20 overs (Faf du Plessis 44, Virat Kohli 31; Naveen-ul-Haq 3-30, Ravi Bishnoi 2-21) beat Lucknow Super Giants 108 all out in 19.5 overs (K. Gowtham 23, Amit Mishra 19; Josh Hazlewood 2-15, Karn Sharma 2-20) by 18 runs

Former Indian cricketer and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lawmaker Gautam Gambhir has allegedly claimed that he has been receiving death threats via email. Security has been tightened outside the parliamentarian’s house after he filed a complaint. Gambhir alleged that he and his family had received threats from ISIS Kashmir.

As per an Indian media outlet News 18, Delhi police said that the emails were generated in Karachi, Pakistan. They were created by a young man named Shaheed Hamid, about 20-25 years of age. He is a student at Sindh University in Karachi.

A second mail included an attachment of a video shot outside Gambhir’s family home. “We intended to kill you, but you survived yesterday. If you love the life of your family, stay away from politics and the Kashmir issue,” it said.

Police sources said they haven’t found any major motive behind the threats.

The video sent was from YouTube, possibly uploaded by a Gambhir supporter in November 2020, they revealed.

Waqar Younis advises Afridi, Gambhir to ‘calm down’

Waqar Younis has urged all-rounder Shahid Afridi and cricketer-turned-politician Gautam Gambhir to end their social media war and has called for India and Pakistan to resume playing cricket.

After being fierce on-field rivals, Pakistan’s Afridi and former Indian opener Gambhir have often been involved in heated social media exchanges over the troubled Kashmir region. Gambhir is now a lawmaker in the Indian parliament, while Afridi has his own foundation and is a vocal activist.

According to AFP, Waqar advised the pair to “calm down” in an online chat show.

“The banter between Gautam Gambhir and Shahid Afridi has been going on for a while now. I think they both got to be smart, sensible, and calm down,” said Waqar.

“It has been going on for way too long. My advice to them is to maybe catch up somewhere around the world and talk it out if you cannot really calm it down.”

India and Pakistan have not played a series since 2012-2013 and have hit a new peak in tensions over Kashmir, which they have fought over since their independence in 1947.

Waqar, 48, said a cricket series would boost relations between the arch-rival neighbours.

“I think that it would be the biggest hit of the world,” said Waqar. “I think Pakistan [and] India should play and should play on a regular basis to avoid depriving cricket lovers.”

Earlier, Shoaib Akhtar had also proposed a three-match Indo-Pak series to raise funds to help the governments of India and Pakistan fight the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.
