Sarfraz Bugti refuses to provide details of 14 bombing attacks by Afghans

Caretaker government officials are not providing any information to support their claim that Afghan nationals were involved in 14 out of 24 suicide bombing attacks in Pakistan in 2023, Geo has reported.

Interior Minister Sarfraz Bugti disclosed on October 3 that from January until October, Pakistan has witnessed 24 suicide bombing attacks.

“Of those 24 bombings, 14 have been carried out by Afghan nationals,” he added. “Afghan people attacked us. This includes the Peshawar mosque bombings and the one in Qilla Saifullah and Hangu, amongst others.”

Sarfraz Bugti also claimed that the government has all the essential proof.

“Afghan nationals are involved in the attacks on us. We have evidence. We have evidence of everything,” he stated.

Sarfraz Bugti repeated his claim in multiple interviews with both international and Pakistani news channels.

The interim government used these metrics to order all undocumented immigrants, as well as 1.73 million Afghan nationals, to leave the country or face deportation.

Earlier last week, Sarfraz Bugti told Dawn TV that almost 400,000 Afghans have left Pakistan so far.

Last month, Geo Fact Check reached out to the interior minister and asked for evidence of the involvement of Afghan nationals in suicide bombing attacks, but the interior minister hasn’t responded back until now.

  • Karachi court says woman convicted of murder is ‘not guilty’ seven months after she died in jail

Karachi court says woman convicted of murder is ‘not guilty’ seven months after she died in jail

A Karachi court on January 10 exonerated a woman, Saima Farhan, and four of her family members, for their alleged involvement in a murder case.

However, it was too late for Saima, as she was exonerated seven months after her death in Central Jail, where she remained incarcerated for almost a year-and-a-half.

Saima, 35, who was an aalima and used to teach the Holy Quran to the person she was accused of killing, died in jail on June 14, 2021, due to severe abdominal and kidney issues. Jail authorities, in her death report, also revealed that she was a cancer patient.

The defence counsel — Muhmmad Akbar Khan and his associate Sheikh Saqib Ahmed — while talking to Geo.tv said: “During the trial, Saima asked us at every hearing: ‘Wakeel sahib, hamein bail kab milegi? (when will we be granted bail)?”

The lawyers, however, lamented not being able to share the happy news that she was finally exonerated.

Saima’s incarceration began on February 14, 2020, after she was arrested for allegedly poisoning her neighbour and friend, Rukhsar.

Following Rukhsar’s death, her mother, Shahnaz, sought to register a complaint against Saima and her family members for allegedly poisoning her daughter.

Saima’s family members, speaking to Geo.tv, said the complainants built a “false case” against them with the “help of the police” to usurp the property Saima owned.

Murder charges against Saima were officially framed on February 6, 2021.

Even after winning a legal battle and emerging innocent, Saima’s family members still await action against the jail authorities, whose denial of her timely medical treatment led to her death.

Security Guard turns assassin, injuring 9 on Sami Khan’s drama set in Karachi

At least nine crew members were injured on Wednesday when a security guard opened fire on the set of a drama serial, Mohabbat Dagh Ki Surat at a residence in Karachi’s Khayaban-e-Shujaat, DHA.

The security guard stationed at the bungalow where the shooting was taking place, identified as Gul Bhai, opened fire after an argument with the producer of the drama, according to a statement issued by the Karachi Police media cell.

“Police have arrested [the] security guard with a rifle,” the police statement said, adding that all the injured crew members were shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC).

As per a video shared on social media, the incident occurred after the producer had an argument with the guard over food.

Actors Sami Khan and Asma Abbasi were reportedly present at the shooting location when this horrendous incident occured but are thankfully safe. They were shooting for the series, Mohabbat Dagh Ki Surat by 7th Sky Entertainment for Geo TV.

No casualties have been reported and the Police is currently investigating this case further.

Yasir Hussain took to his Instagram stories and addressed the incident, saying: “The guard didn’t shoot the actors or the producers at the shoot. But those poor workers that are working on set for Rs1,000 per day,” he said. “They’re not the ones sitting in the AC, and eat outside in the parking lot,” he explained.

“With the guard, the production house should also be punished. This ugly system should be punished,” he urged.

His comments highlight important criticism of the entertainment industry and the way it treats labour.

Hussain wants them to be given health insurance, which should be a must for all workers. Healthcare insurance should be a basic right for everyone employed in a country that doesn’t provide free healthcare.
