Exclusive: ‘Not the first time he’s apologised,’ Gharidah Farooqi reveals interaction with Dr Omer Adil

One month after passing misogynistic remarks against renowned television anchor Gharidah Farooqi, Dr Omer Adil has publicly apologised.

On a podcast hosted by Zohaib Butt, Dil Ki Baat, in July, film critic and orthopaedic surgeon Adil claimed that female anchors in Pakistan’s media industry are “handpicked by a seth or somebody else to go and host a stupid program”, adding that they are treated extraordinarily in comparison to their male counterparts.

He made these comments during a segment of the podcast that primarily targeted Gharidah Farooqi and used derogatory language, including vulgar abuse. He further claimed that the producers had ‘no guts’ to criticise women anchors for their mistakes.

This was followed by a massive backlash from the journalist community across Pakistan, particularly women who are, time and again, subjected to harassment and sexist commentary.

On August 6, Gharidah Farooqi updated on X (formerly Twitter) that Dr. Adil had been arrested by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).

On August 24, Dr Omer Adil posted an “unconditional, wholehearted and sincere apology” to Gharidah Farooqi.

But speaking with The Current, Gharida Farooqi revealed that it is not the first time that Omer Adil apologised to her.

“Dr. Umar Adil contacted me many weeks ago, shortly after he was granted bail following his arrest by the FIA after I filed a complaint. He called and apologised for about 20 to 30 minutes, insisting that he had been trapped and ended up saying things in the podcast that he did not intend.

He seemed to be playing the victim,” she recalls.

Gharidah then demanded that he issue an apology on his official YouTube channel for a duration equal to the time he spent making those offensive remarks on the podcast, to which he agreed.

The apology, however, was delayed due to alleged technical issues. During this time, he posted a brief video but then vanished again.

Although the case was receiving widespread attention, the FIA only detained Adil after Farooqi filed a complaint, which ultimately led to his public apology.

    Fight against digital violence

Ghareeda Farooqi has long been subjected to online violence. From rape threats to even death threats, she has been targeted by “malicious campaigns”.

“I have been fighting against not just cyberbullying but cyberviolence against myself since 2014. I was the first female journalist who was made the victim of digital violence against women, as well as planned campaigns organised by political parties”, she says.

Women Press Freedom has documented at least a dozen organised troll campaigns against Gharida, reportedly the “highest number of organised digital violence we have ever documented against a journalist in the region” after Indian journalist Rana Ayyub.

“People have forged videos and pictures using my face, including pornographic content,” she recalls.

“So far, I have filed almost ten complaints with the FIA; not even one has been addressed, and no culprit has been arrested.”

The curious case of Rana Sana’s Twitter account

We realise that Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) stalwart Rana Sanaullah’s loss in February 8 general elections must be quite a shock but his Twitter (now X) account has gone off in an unexpected direction.

Unlike PML-N leader Khwaja Saad Rafique, who used his account to gracefully concede defeat and congratulate his opponent Sardar Latif Khosa, Rana Sanaullah has decided that he wants to troll journalists.

The account has, till now, picked a Twitter fight with Meher Bokhari, shared a song by the late Indian rapper Sidhu Mosewalla, and targeted legal analyst Reema Omer for praising Geo’s election coverage.

It has also sent snarky replies to Hamid Mir and Gharidah Farouqi, while also tweeting multiple times against media channels.

Rana Sanaullah has distanced himself from the the account, telling Geo’s Shehzad Iqbal that he doesn’t run the account, instead a team runs it.

‘It works two ways’: Khan again victim blames Journalist Gharidah for getting harassed

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairperson Imran Khan yet again victim blamed journalist Gharidah Farooqi for being harassed at a rally where she had gone to cover the event.

In an interview with Isaac Chotiner of The New Yorker, Khan was asked if his comment about Farooqi was taken out of context.

The former Prime Minister responded: “No. No. No. It wasn’t out of context. Look, in our society, we were . . . it was just in one particular rally where they were all men, and she was right in the middle of this male crowd. It’s just that . . . I mean, anyone who knows Pakistani society, or most sorts of societies like India or Pakistan—if you put yourself in that position, you are going to be vulnerable.”

“It’s just common sense. Yes, the men are to be blamed if they do anything. But also it works two ways, you should all . . . in our society, normally, people would avoid putting themselves in that position. It’s as simple as that,” added Khan.

“We have brilliant women journalists in this country. They are doing a great job. But they don’t have to put themselves in positions—and let me just say, it was a specific situation I was talking about, because we actually tried to get her out of the situation,” said Khan.

Chotiner probed Imran further, stating that there seems to be a certain universalism in Khan’s thinking about democratic government, but, when he speaks about cultural or social issues, about girls’ education or how women respond to being mistreated by men, there’s not so much universalism.

Khan replied, “I’m appalled. I just feel that sometimes the Western press picks up selective things. How can anyone blame women for rape? Tell me, how can any sensible person ever make such a stupid comment? Look, the rapist is always to be blamed. Always. Simple. Full stop. I was looking at the crime charts, and the crime charts reported to me by the police officers showed that sex crimes were going through the roof in my country. So we got to the bottom of it. Why is this happening?”

“In the case of a woman getting raped, she’s marked for life. But even worse is when children get abused; that stays with them for the rest of their life. The ideas that came forward were, one, that we must bring down the level of temptation in our society, because you have a lot of frustrated people. Now, this is coming from civil society. And secondly, how do we educate children in schools to stop this child abuse?”

Khan, in October last year, passed sexist comments about journalist Gharidah Farooqi, saying:Woh mardon mei ghussay gi toh aisa hi hoga(If she will enter into men’s sphere, then this is what will happen).

During a meeting with the delegation of the National Press Club and the Rawalpindi/Islamabad Union of Journalists (RIUJ), Khan said that “Farooqi goes into the crowd and then complains that she is being harassed”.

He also said that he will ask his party workers to act appropriately.

‘Misogynistic, bigoted’: Twitter calls out Imran Khan’s ‘mardon mein ghustee hai’ comment

Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan, on Tuesday, passed sexist comments about journalist Gharidah Farooqi, saying: “Woh mardon mei ghussay gi toh aisa hi hoga” (If she will enter into men’s sphere, then this is what will happen).

During a meeting with the delegation of the National Press Club and the Rawalpindi/Islamabad Union of Journalists (RIUJ), Khan said that “Farooqi goes into the crowd and then says that she is being harassed”.

Along with these remarks, he stated that he will also ask his party workers to act in right manner.

Twitter did not take kindly to the former Prime Minister’s remarks.

‘Agar ilzaam saabit huva toh mai sahafat chorr doonga’: Saleem Safi challenges IK for calling him a ‘lifafa’

On the same occasion, Khan alleged that Journalist Saleem Safi is a lifafa (biased) journalist.

When asked by a journalist that why he [Imran Khan] called journalists lifafa, he responded by saying that he has never called any journalist lifafa except for Saleem Safi.

Responding to this, Safi challenged Imran Khan to prove himself. The senior journalist said in a statement that a committee consisting of PTI’s Murad Saeed, Shibli Faraz and Fawad Chaudhry should be formed under the leadership of the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) president to investigate this matter.

He said that if he is proved to be a liar, then the punishment of a thief will be his punishment and he will leave journalism and if Imran Khan is proved to be a liar, then he will have to leave politics and apologise.

He also said that he will get to the end of this matter.

  • ‘Imran Khan the standard you want to set for Bushra Bibi, apply the same for all women’: Maryam Nawaz

‘Imran Khan the standard you want to set for Bushra Bibi, apply the same for all women’: Maryam Nawaz

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Vice President Maryam Nawaz, in a fiery press conference, fiercely criticised Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan.

“Yes, your [PM Khan] wife [Bushra Bibi] is of respect to us. The standard you want to set for your wife, the same standards should have been there for the deceased Kalsoom Nawaz [wife of PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif]. When I used to go to check on my mother from our London apartment to the hospital, three to four Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) workers used to abuse me. When my son Junaid used to leave, they used to abuse his mother,” said Maryam Nawaz.

She alleged that some PTI activists had barged into the hospital just to take pictures of an ailing Kulsoom.

“The standard you set for your wife, apply the same for every woman,” added the PML-N leader.

“I was innocent and you put me in the death cell. You did the character assassination of a daughter in front of her father. When I was in Gilgit Baltistan and running my political campaign in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, you did not have an answer to my political criticism. So your minister on record hurled below the belt criticism towards me.”

“I want to request the media to play the footage of the speeches of the PTI ministers where they have made personal attacks against me. Imran Khan Sahib used to praise them for making such comments, clap at them. I too am someone’s daughter. What you have done with Asma Shirazi, Gharidah Farooqi, and Sana Bucha, the country has not forgotten it.”

“Have the guts to take criticism,” reiterated Maryam.

Responding to the arrest of journalist Mohsin Baig by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), who is accused of initiating a debate on a television show with obscene references towards PM Imran Khan and Minister for Communication Murad Saeed, Maryam said, ” When Mohsin Saab was with you [Imran Khan], helped you with your political matters, at that time he was very nice. And now that he is criticising you, you should have had the guts to take the criticism. You used FIA against him. I feel sorry for your mental condition Imran Khan Saab.”

“People are cursing you for the price hike and increase in the petrol prices,” said Maryam, adding, “People don’t have fuel. The people of Pakistan do not travel on government-provided vehicles.”

“I agree that you [PM Khan] are not eligible, and do not have the qualification but I wish you had a heart which was kind. You have used the hard-earned money of the people of Pakistan just to settle your score with your opponents,” said the PML-N leader.

“You have made FIA, National Accountability Bureau (NAB) a part of your politics to settle scores with your opponents. Despite the fact that you are a liar and fake, you are sitting on the seat of a prime minister of the country, you should have spent all your time serving the people of Pakistan, instead you utilised all your energy to take revenge on the Opposition,” said Maryam.

Talking to reporters after appearing at the Islamabad High Court in the Avenfield Apartments case, Maryam was asked if Shehbaz Sharif would resign as PML-N president if the “no-confidence gamble” failed.

Maryam responded that she was hopeful of the move’s success “because Imran is on his last legs and it’s a risk that should be taken”, adding that the messages sent by her party to disgruntled lawmakers were also applicable to the PML-N itself.

She did not elaborate on who she was referring to as “disgruntled” lawmakers or what messages were sent to them.

“If the opposition does not take a united stand here then we will be blamed for it. It’s ultimately the public that we have to go back to at the time of elections.”

Responding to a question on whether she supported another extension for the army chief, Maryam said “it’s a premature question and we don’t have any details before us”.

  • Pemra issues show-cause notice to News One for airing ‘derogatory’ remarks about Murad Saeed

Pemra issues show-cause notice to News One for airing ‘derogatory’ remarks about Murad Saeed

The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) on Friday issued a show-cause notice to News One for airing “derogatory/demeaning remarks” about federal Minister for Communications Murad Saeed “without any editorial check” in a programme.

On Thursday, News One aired a show, ‘G for Gharidah’, at 10:05pm in which anchorperson Gharidah Farooqi questioned the decision of Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan to award appreciation certificate to Murad Saeed as the top minister in his team for his outstanding performance.

Gharida asked the panelists on her show: “The Prime Minister seems satisfied with Murad Saeed. He is in the top position, what could be the reason?”

Analyst Mohsin Baig responded, “The reason [for Murad Saeed being at the top place] is written in Reham Khan’s book. I don’t really know about the projects.”

Senior journalist and analyst Iftikhar Ahmed said, “You took the name of the person on the top position,” Gharida interjected and said, “Murad Saeed Saab,” Ahmed continued, “Yes, everyone is aware of his [Murad Saeed’s] performance and the accusations against him.”

Journalist and analyst Tariq Mehmood said, “Two people are serious in this, one Imran Khan Sahib, second Murad Saeed Sahib. We shouldn’t be so serious about this. One conducted the ceremony, second came on the first place,” adding, “Some things are self-explanatory, Pemra will be keeping a close eye, don’t make us say all the things. A book has been mentioned.”

“He [Murad Saeed] is a very hardworking minister and very close to the prime minister. Once again he has proved through his performance and left everyone behind,” said Mehmood.

Senior defence analyst General (retired) Amjad Shoaib said, “I have not read the book that was being discussed. However, I will agree with Mohsin Baig’s analysis, which he just made.”

Twitterati started a debate with trends against the host of the show. Some questioned why was Gharidah Farooqi the subject of criticism as she had not said anything but just asked a question.

However, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf official Twitter handle shared a clip of the show and wrote, “Extremely shameful on Ghareeda Farooqi’s part to lead a program with such derogatory language.”

Pakistan Broadcasters Association (PBA) condemned “PEMRA for taking News One off-air on cable networks without following due process“.

Several political parties condemned News One being taken off-air.

Captain Safdar on ‘video leaks’, urges people with films ‘to own it’

Journalist Gharidah Farooqi shared a video of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader, Captain Safdar, on Twitter, where Safdar is seen commenting on ‘video leaks’.

The date of the video is unclear but talking to The Current, Farooqi said, “even if old, it’s most relevant today”.

In the video, Captain Safdar said, “Don’t be scared people, films [compromising videos] will not do anything.”

“A film has been made on everyone once in their life. Say it with courage, yes there is a film, own it and ask [them to] bring it on, and then everyone will sit calmly,” said Safdar.

Earlier this week, PML-N leader Muhammad Zubair’s leaked video, where he is allegedly seen in compromising acts with women, went viral on social media.

The former governor of Sindh categorically denied the video and termed it to be a “new low in politics” along with claiming that the video is “fake and doctored”.

VIDEO: ‘PTI should fear the day when Fawad Chaudhry writes a book’

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) stalwart Rana Sanaullah has said that the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) should fear the day when the incumbent federal minister for science and technology, Fawad Chaudhry, writes a book.

Speaking to a private media outlet, Sanaullah, who was appearing on the show with Fawad, was asked what he had to say about the explosive viral excerpts from Railways Minister Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad’s upcoming book.

“These claims support our stance and these questions should be asked to people whose stances are being contradicted,” he said in response.

Sanaullah maintained that most people state the truth while writing a book or try to do so because humans are mortal but books live on for hundreds of years even after the author’s demise.

“So I think PTI should fear the day when Fawad Chaudhry writes a book. It would be more dangerous than this one.”

  • FREAKONOMICS!

    FREAKONOMICS!

    We are all freaked out!

No one knows what is happening… no one
knows what will happen… but we are all freaked out!

Dollar floats and soars as freely as Imran
Khan’s sky-high claims of rectifying the economy in the past, buying gold is
the gossip of old times, stock market plunges are a routine matter. Basic
necessities are now luxuries, taxes are piling up these days more quickly than
the fats on one’s bones, education was never free, but wasn’t even as expensive
    as of today.

Jobs are scant. Health facilities are
sparse. Incomes and earnings getting more and more exiguous. The economy is
shrinking, debt is accumulating, investors are wary, traders are worried, farmers
are distraught, businessmen depressed and youth distressed.

Everyone is caught up in a whirlpool of
stress and strain, yet the Khan government assures us on a daily basis: “All is
    well… all will be well”.

Either it’s the innocence, ignorance or
some blind inference that we still sustain some hope in the current regime.
Probably, we are left with no other option. Probably we still want to test
    Khan’s delivery.

Either it’s the incompetence of the
government or it’s the incompetence of the collective social judgement. We are
in a state of love and hate relationship with Khan — exactly like our cricket
team. On a rare, unexpected occasion; it delivers something and we are all
    cheering up.

Most of the times we are let down,
crestfallen; yet we have no other option. Do we?

Opposition, on the other hand, the prime
task of which is to safeguard the public interests and to keep an eye on
government functioning, is failing to perform too. Though we see a lot of brouhaha
and hubbub by the opposition parties in the National Assembly these days as the
budget session goes on, it fails to substantially affect the smooth passage and
    approval of the finance bill.

Reason: united we stand, divided we “sit”.

This division was quite obvious at the
opposition’s All Parties Conference (APC) convened two days back in Islamabad
when the joint communiqué lacked any solid and affirmative strategy.

The ostensible joint opposition had a clear
difference of opinion and strategy between Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and
Maulana’s Jamiat Ulemae Islam-Fazl (JUI-F); between within Pakistan Muslim
League-Nawaz (PML-N) of Shehbaz Sharif versus Maryam Nawaz; between smaller
    parties and PPP plus PML-N.

So far the synthetic joint opposition is
granting more benefit than inflicting any harm upon Khan’s government. Under
the cloud of thunderous claims by the opposition, it all seems to rain down
    well upon the government.

    Khan smartly managed to politically
    “epoxy-fy” disgruntled Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) and
Balochistan National Party-Mengal (BNP-M), hence securing not just the sanction
of Budget 2019-20, but acquiring a few months’ more time to stabilise his
    administration.

Opposition can rely upon mere verbosity via
pressers, media talks, statements and tweets till then. And we are all left at
the mercy of tight economic clenching till then.

October is the new November, they say.

No one knows what is happening… no one knows
what will happen… but we are all freaked out!
