    Stray dog helpline restored, app to be launched in Karachi

    The Project Director of the Anti-Rabies Control Program has said that an app has been developed for the complaint of stray dogs in Karachi which will be launched after Ramzan. A helpline related to the same issue has been restored for the city.

    Geo’s Amin Anwar reports that a hearing was held in the Sindh High Court on action against stray dogs and non-supply of vaccines in the coastal city. The Project Director filed a reply in the court stating that the helpline 1093 for reporting dog bite incidents has been reinstated by the Anti-Rabies Control Program.

    The reply submitted in the court also stated that from January 2022 to March 2024, more than 19,000 dogs were vaccinated, rabies control centers were set up in four districts, and rules were made to control the growing population of stray dogs in the city.

    The program has aimed in the reply that dog population control centers will be established in every district of the province and a notification regarding that has already been issued on February 29.

    The project director of anti-rabies control program also said that a mobile app has been created for the complaint of stray dogs and bite incidents. This app will be launched for the public after Ramzan.

    Citizens can file complaints about stray dogs with photo and address through the app. Stray dogs will be vaccinated after that.

    The court adjourned till May 4.

    Hyderabad will finally get Rescue 1122 service by 2023

    Deputy Commissioner of Hyderabad Fuad Ghaffar Soomro, who also serves as acting Director-General of the Hyderabad Development Authority (HDA), revealed that Hyderabad would launch its 1122 emergency service by the following year.

    Additionally, Garbage disposal in the city will also become operational by the next month due to the recent contract that has been inked.

    He was addressing the Hyderabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (HCCI) members in this location on Tuesday night. The Site area filtration facility, he claimed, had been rendered operational and would shortly be turned over to the Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa).

    According to him, Hyderabad’s water quality is superior to Karachi’s. He also noted that the city’s power outages had grown since the introduction of 1000 MW of energy. He claimed the water supply and drainage industries were being impacted.

    He committed to resolving the problems with marriage gardens and reception halls. Underpasses, he added, were also necessary for the metropolis. For the renovation and adornment of roundabouts and greenbelts, he requested the assistance of the business community.

    He gave the business community his word that problems with the fruit market would be taken care of within a timely manner.

    In his welcome speech, HCCI President Adeel Siddiqui noted that rising gas costs, electricity and gas prices, as well as unannounced power outages, were all contributing to a decline in production at small and medium-sized businesses.

    He claimed that industrialists were having difficulties as a result of administrative hurdles. He claimed that the city needed an effective firefighting apparatus. He said that several parts of Latifabad lacked access to even drinkable water.

    Domestic violence calls increase about 52% in 2021

    Punjab Women’s Helpline reportedly received 52 per cent more calls about domestic violence from different parts of the province in 2021 as compared to the previous year.

    In the records, an increase of 38 per cent rise was seen in the number of kidnapping cases. Violence outside homes cases was increased to 563 as compared to 497 in 2021, reports Express Tribune.

    Calls against child marriage increased by 31 per cent. Similarly, the helpline received 35 per cent more calls for custody of children as this year 441 cases were recorded.

    On the other hand, there was a decline in complaints about inheritance share and forced marriages.

    However, complaints against forced marriage decreased by 35 per cent.

    The helpline 1043 addressed the inquiries and complaints related to workplace harassment, gender discrimination, property disputes, inheritance rights, domestic violence, hostels, day-care centres and other facilities for working women.

    Last year, the number of sexual harassment cases had increased up to 300 per cent in Lahore.

    Helplines for women facing violence during coronavirus crisis

    The coronavirus induced lockdown has forced everyone to stay at home. While the home is thought to be a safe place, it is being reported that cases of domestic violence have spiked in the past couple of days – not only in Pakistan but across the world. Human Rights Organisations in all countries are stepping up to assist women and children who are victims of domestic abuse and feel unsafe in their homes.

    Rozan, a non-government organisation, is offering psychological counselling in Pakistan through a telephonic helpline.

    It was launched to help the survivors of gender-based violence and women and girls in abusive situations during the coronavirus quarantine. There will be a special focus on women and children’s needs during this time, said the CSO on Twitter.

    Rozan counsellors are working from home from Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm to provide counselling on telephones. The helpline numbers are: 0335-5000401, 0335-5000402 and 0335-5000403. Their toll-free number is 0800 22444.

    Work crisis management will also be available. The organisation said it will provide guidance on how managers and employees can work more effectively.

    This service, called the Rozan response to COVID-19, was a result of a collaboration between the CSO and the United Nations Population Fund which is the UN’s agency working on sexual and reproductive health issues.

    Ministry of Human Rights also launched a helpline for those facing violence during this lockdown.

    Govt launches ‘Sehat Tahaffuz’ helpline to provide health-related information

    Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Health, Dr Zafar Mirza introduced the ‘Sehat Tahaffuz’ helpline ‘1166’ at a ceremony in Islamabad to provide health-related information services to the public.

    As per reports, through the helpline, people will be able to get instant assistance to their queries and concerns, particularly related to polio and routine immunization services.

    The helpline will also provide information and address queries of parents related to the vaccine. It will be active from eight in the morning to twelve midnight daily.

    Pakistan remains one of the last two countries in the world, alongside Afghanistan, where the poliovirus is still prevalent.

    There is a strong national and international commitment to eradicate polio. It is a collective responsibility to ensure all children are protected and vaccinated against the poliovirus.
